FAQ (updated as people ask questions):

Q: What food and drinks will there be?

A: At this point, it's looking like pizza (Dominos?) and whatever cheap cans of soft drink are on sale in May.

Q: Is there a bar?

A: No, the venue does not sell food or drinks.

Q: Why is the meetup not free?

A: According to the Internet which is always right, if you don't charge for an event ~50% of attendees will not show/cancel. If a small fee is involved, this number drops to 20-30%. The Brisbane event was free and there were a lot of cancellations/no shows. Not only does this screw everything up with organizing the venue but also makes it difficult to cater for food.

Q: Can family/partners/friends attend?

A: At this point, OzBargainers have the #1 priority. You just need an OzBargain account (hint, hint). In a few days, room provided, we will open it up to family, friends.

Q: Do I have to be identified or can I attend anonymously?

A: I will be creating nametags with First Names & Usernames. You can choose whether to wear them or feel free to make edits. No interaction is required other than conversating with the venue's door person (venue employee).

Q: Why aren't you posting as a rep?

A: Last time I posted a rep, it screwed up the posting restrictions on OzBargain.com.au. This is an issue as it affects my editing of deals ;)

Q: Will there be meetups in other cities?

A: Next meetup will be Sydney. We are currently looking for a suitable venue. If you want a meetup in your city, please organize it and we may be able to help out financially.

Q: Where can I park?

A: It appears from looking at Street View, that there is ample street parking outside the venue.

Q: I signed up to OzBargain Meetups but my account hasn't been approved yet. Why?

A: This is a meetup for existing OzBargain members. Those who just signed up to participate in the meetup will be approved at a later date once existing OzBargain members have had a chance to signup.

Q: Can I pay at the door?

A: No, this is a cash-free event. You can pay via paypal or make a deposit into the OzBargain bank account.

Q: Can I get a refund?

A: Yes, if the request is made more than 48 hours prior to the event.

    Update (8/5):

    • Games

I visited the venue today for the first time. I counted ~15 pinball machines including my favourite of all time, the Star Trek TNG pinball machine. So unless someone forks out $6150 to buy it between now and next week, it should be there.

Other games, 2 of those sit down table video games, boxing game where you punch as hard as you can, a 4 player daytona usa (or similar name), tetris (yawn!), and some others.

    • Almost Sold out

Only 4 spots left. 60 is probably enough for the venue.

    • Alcohol

The venue doesn't have a BYO license. Serving alcohol requires RSAs and all the fun gov regulations behind it. There is however a pub, The Palace across the street. It has a beer garden.

    • Google Hangout/Skype

It's going to be a technical feat trying to get this going plus we don't really have a proper screen. Going low-tech for the night.

    • Parking and PT

There are loads of on-street parking outside the venue. Apparently, it's quite empty on Friday night. There is also parking out the back of the place as well. The 250/251 bus stop is about a block away. That bus goes down Rathdown street, into the city (Lonsdale Street), and near Crown. The tram stop is nearby as well.

    EDIT:

    • T-Shirts

Scott just received V2.0 of the t-shirts. People at the meetup will have the first dibs.

      Easy ;-)

      • Can you really run a google hangout on a HP MicroServer? (no experience with them so just didn't expect it)

      • Ha nice. The Internet connection and computer are not so much the problem. There is an A/V room where I can hook up the computer. Biggest problem is that the webcam is built in to the laptop. So I'd have to string a long external USB webcam to the show floor. I have a wireless microphone but that's hooked into their AV system. Then there is the reliability of a Google Hangout without dropouts/going black & white. It's in the too hard pile.

    • tetris (yawn!)

Blasphemy! Although it's probably a dodgy version of Tetris though…

    • Scott just received V2.0 of the t-shirts. People at the meetup will have the first dibs.

Sorry. Just posted out some to a few participants from the March video comp, who have been waiting for the v2 T-shirt for almost 2 months…

      • +2

What kind of shop are your running scotty? A waiting time of two months for a T-shirt!? Admit it, you have no stock to begin with. I am off to Fair Trading and ACCC.

        • +2

I am doing a Kogan here. It's all wholesaler's fault.

  • We are just about to hit 60 which is our maximum. Once it hits 60, Meetup creates a waiting list. So if someone cancels, you will be be able to take their spot. I wish we could take more than 60 but there just isn't any room.

  • With about a week to go, I must confess I've re-read the discussions in forum + bargain, and I may be the only person there who feels indifferent about pinball machines. Apologies to the enthusiasts - I'm not a connoisseur of the genre and have only ever played two games in my life, but to my eyes, they all look alike.

    http://www.quickmeme.com/meme/3ucjpl/

    • TBH I'm the same… I've never actually played on a physical pinball machine, only the pinball game by maxis on windows 95.

    • I'm not too interested in the machines. I'm more keen to meet a couple people and have a drink. Was hoping for beers but not looking like that.

    Some last minute updates:

We've had some generous offers to assist in the meeetup.

    • Japanese Gyoza Finger Food

I'm currently in discussions but a Melbourne restaurant has offered some finger food for the meetup. Gyoza and pizza go together great? Will update shortly.

    • UBER

Some of you may be aware of Uber by some of the deals posted here.

Uber is a game-changing startup who's smartphone app connects you to your nearest available chauffeur driven car.

They've generously given us 60 x 1 free ride to the value of $50 to or from Bumper Action Amusements.

    • For new and existing users
    • Valid from 5:30pm to 11:30pm Friday 17 May 2013
    • Code must be entered before ride is taken
    • Ride must begin or end at Bumper Action Amusements

    Just use the code OzBargainMeetup.

See their Melbourne page for more information. $50 should get you quite far (roughly Carlton to St. Kilda distance).

    Some FAQs:

Can I book a car in advance?
Uber is a strictly on-demand service and we don’t accept reservations in advance. The app will give you a real time ETA of your nearest driver, so check the app before you’re ready to leave.

Why do I have to enter my credit card? Isn’t this ride free?
The great thing about Uber is that when you ride, you hop in and hop out and we automatically send you a receipt. No cash or in-car payment is required! For this efficient magic to happen, we ask you to enter your credit card information. If you’ve also received Uber credits or free rides, they’ll be used before your card is charged.

I thought this ride was free? Why does my receipt show me the fare?
Your receipt will display the fare cost and below the charge, it will show the promotional discounts that have been applied.

    • We've had some generous offers to assist in the meeetup.

      • Japanese Gyoza Finger Food

Much more enticing, but I've missed out. Waiting list only, but even without a waiting list, I'll still be too shy! +1 for the effort!

    • Are there enough cars to offer this service?

CAn I use a coupon to get in from my location, and my mate, who is a member and going, use a coupon to get home. We will travel together.

      • Don't know how many cars there are. If you open up the app, you can see how many cars are nearby your location.

As above, you can use the coupon as long as you come from or go to the venue. 1 coupon per account. You can have multiple people in the car. I haven't used the service myself so if you have any questions it's best you email or tweet the Melbourne Uber team.

        • I'll create an account tomorrow, and work out costings from Clayton and noble park areas.. Keen to give it a go, sick of taxis.

    Another update for the food:

We have confirmed that Gyoza Douraku will generously be supplying 60 boxes (6 dumplings each) to our meetup. You may remember them from the Buy 1 Get 1 free deal. To ensure freshness/warmness, someone needs to pick them up from the restaurant shortly before the meetup. Anyone coming from the Bourke St. direction with a vehicle and want to help out? The boxes are 20x25cm w/l and 10cm high, so definitely need a form of transport (no tram).

    • +5

Now that the event is cancelled, I volunteer to help pick it up and deliver it to my mouth

  • +6

Up until today, I was quite amazed how smoothly this was running…

So at 9AM today I get a call from the events person at Bumper Action. Council has banned them from hosting events effective immediately. Apparently it has to do with some issue with a neighbour. Bumper's lawyers are fighting council but it doesn't look like it will be resolved by tomorrow night. I called the Port Phillip council but they couldn't tell me anything 1) because they are useless and 2) privacy.

That said, we have no choice but to cancel the event and try to reschedule/find somewhere else in the future. We've tried to find another venue but with such short notice and 60 people it's looking unlikely. Bumper recommended Galactic Circus in Crown but it's a more kid oriented and hugely expensive ($30 pizzas anyone?).

Well, first things first, we will refund everyone's money. This will be done later today after I reconfirm in the afternoon with the venue.

This really really sucks and I'm sorry for messing you all around. We are happy to hear any other ideas or suggestions.

    • damn I was really looking forward to it. Thats sucky to find out the day before the event.

    • +4

Port Phillip Council hates OzBargain. And fun. :(

    • +3

Yeah it really sucks, and we only got notified today. It really sucks for Bumper as well, as they not only have to cancel our event but also have to cancel their regular Pinball Faith events + other bookings :(

With such short time frame I think it would be impossible to organise an equivalent venue. As the council has basically banned them from hosting events, there is no certainty that we can reschedule either.

I'll be clicking through the "Refund" buttons later in the afternoon after getting more confirmations.

    • Something makes me think that this has been brewing for a while, as my experience with council is that they just can't ban things without due process. Looks like we are just the collateral damage! Would have been nice if Bumper Action had warned us that this action was impending.

      • +2

council can do things immediately. its the way they roll.

      • +2

After my experiences with noisy neighbours (not a venue) and Councils, you don't have any idea whether council will do anything or not, they give you no indication/time frame/nothing! So, the venue probably had no idea it was this serious, if it was only one neighbour complaining. Seems to me Councils are happy to jump on board if it's a business making (alleged) noise, but not if it's just the average Joes next door!

        • +1

yea me too, I lived next door to a one bedroom flat full of indian guys that blared their music late at night on a work night. Council never did anything.

        • Did you ask the council for help?

      • With events held regularly and for a long time, I'm sure there's been something happening in the background for ages! I'm a bit p*ssed that there's been a massive cancellation here, my last day of annual leave from work and I was hoping to hit the pinnies rather hard for 3 hours…

Anyway, maybe Bumper Action might be able to hold another event for us once they're back on the positive.

    • +1

Damn it, Janet! There's always ONE that spoils the fun! I'm putting my thinking cap on, for a short notice venue :)

    • +1

Aw man. I was really looking forward to seeing some fellow OzBargainers. And having the "Not A Bot" badge!

      • hmm. slightly disappointing, but what can be done. look forward to the next one!

    • +2

They told me they also had to cancel a bucks party at the venue this weekend as well. The woman I spoke to was quite upset with good reason as she is the events person and they can no longer hold events there.

I don't know what the issue is exactly. They are not a licensed venue so I believe it may be a noise complaint(s) from neighbours. My guess is its local NIMBYs ruining yet another Melbourne venue. Or maybe Gerry Harvey got word of our event.

      • +1

To the local residents, Suprise! Suprise! Inner City living is noisy…..

I'd reccomend Sidetracked in Oakleigh, but I'm not sure what the cost would be……

On the bright side perhaps we'll see Scotty at the next meetup

    • +2

Sad face! Was just going through all the recent bargains I've gotten for conversation topics tomorrow night :P seriously though I was very much looking forward to it. Hopefully it can be rectified and we still get to meet up at some point

    • Even though in im SA and not going, it's sad, for all the hard workers at OzBargain and anyone else, all the effort and time they put to this, and to see it cancelled :sad face:
Damm you Port Phillip council, damm you!

  • +2

improptu meetup at [some pub] instead?

    • +1

Happy to do that. Guess I'm buying?

My preference was to have the first meetup organized and fun so people can get to know each other. Then future meetups we can do smaller more regular meetups at various venues like the MTUB does.

      • I can't think of a pub that could hold 60 people though :o

except maybe the mail exchange hotel? its near my work, we went there for christmas. Also the exchange hotel, we had another christman function there. Has a big hall type thing, but maybe it was just for dining.

  • +1

shattered to hear the news :(

  • +2

Well, this sucks. I just came to post and say I'm excited it's on, only to find … it's not.

Perhaps we ought to OzBargain some noise cancelling headphones for their neighbour???

  • Uugh.

  • +7

OK, I just got the full story. It wasn't a noise complaint but it is an issue with a complaining business who is neighbouring Bumper (not residential). Bumper has been running functions there for ~15 years without needing to get a "function permit". Common sense would say after 15 years, if the council deemed you needed a function permit, they would grant one. Apparently not. They don't see any resolution to this for at least a month.

The story between the 2 businesses feuding is actually quite interesting and would make a good Herald Sun tabloid story. Hmmm…

  • +2

dang.. i suppose im not surprised bc im having one of those weeks were everything goes wrong.

I would have thought the council would let them honour their events that were so close, like given them 1 weeks warning or something, that would be reasonable, this seems ridiculous.

I don't know anything much about local laws but I am amazed they seem to be able to immediately enact that.

  • +7

All payments should have now been refunded back to your PayPal accounts.

    • Thanks!

    • Mine has! Thanks for the prompt refund…

I'm still a bit sad to see that $5 come back though… knowing it was a bargain spend anyway!

      • leaves me with $5 in my paypal account for meritline junk!

  • +2

    Well…. Bugger!

  • +5

i am happy to wait until Bumper action is available again.. shame it was cancelled, was looking forward to some pizza and pinball..

  • So… who's up for PAINTBALL!! *8vD
    Go karts maybe?
Check out http://www.234fungalore.com.au/ for some seriously varied highend entertainment! *8vD
    And, there's always bowling.

    • Near my place, I would be in.

  • +1

Aww, sad to hear the news although I'm not going. Good news is probably will be able to make it for next event (if any?)

  • +5

Should've bought up a whole stack of the AMF bowling tickets and moved the event there!!
I was really looking forward to this. It is a fantastic venue. Hopefully it can be reorganised there for a later date.

Thanks for the hard work Neil & Scotty, it's just a shame it didn't pay off.

    • +5

Ditto on the thanks for the hard work organising the event.

  • +1

such a shame, was looking forward to it

hopefully we can reschedule this for another time :)
    DIBS!

  • +5

Drove past Bumper on my way home tonight (I live close to it) and shed a tear as I thought of the good times we couldve had and the fact I had to eat Maccas instead of nice warm pizza. Hopefully we will meet up soon!

    • Similar situation, but I used my free Domino's voucher from earlier in the week!

Bit disappointing, but second time's a charm! :)

  • What is the loophole for the term 'function'?

It's just a couple of (60) mates getting together on a Friday night

    • 90% of their business is pinball sales. So while it's sucks for them not being able to host events, they wouldn't want to risk the rest of their business. It's one of the neighboring businesses who is behind the reporting them to council, so it would be hard to have any large amounts of people in there without the neighbour noticing.

      • What about a sales event? Games auction? If they are up for it they could move a lot of stock if the price is ozbargain right. Pretty cool stuff on their site. Foosball, air hockey, gum ball machines, novelty stuff, pool tables etc.

        http://www.bumper.com.au/index.php/specials

P.s. Silent auction may not work with a room full of ozbargainers haha

    • +5

Can't tell if joking - or just stupid.
      Negged just in case.

      • -2

        Just joking. Everyone can relax.

      • +3

        Event cancelled. No bargain here.

no more negs left, your saved for today

        Ill come back tomorrow

  • -5

ozbargain hits rock bottom. lmao too funny. council sniffed it was going to be a bad event and cancelled it before too much damage could be caused

    • +3

you really should eat a snickers bar..

  • +3

How about we all convene at Neil's place?

    • +1

      Hmmm….

  • Just an update. The venue is moving a couple of blocks close to the city in a couple of weeks (with an event permit). Will check out the new place and try again.
