Agreed, as long as you register your purchase online by 31 Dec you have until 31 Jan for your submission to be in their hands for it to count. The way it's written, which might not be what they mean, is you can scan and submit by 31 Dec or you have until 31 Jan to send snail mail. Either way proof of purchase has to be between 25-31 Dec.

TLDR: You don't need your receipt to register.

      • It's still confusing as hell though. On the home page it makes a differentiation between the 'Promotional Period' (25th Dec to 31st Dec) and the 'Redemption Period' (25th Dec to 31st Jan), yet on the Terms & Conditions page it still states that all 3 steps (purchasing, registering, and submitting the claim) have to be done in the Promo Period (25th to 31st Dec).

Can anyone tell us what comes after clicking the 'Next Step' button on the cashback website after registering? Do we need to provide the serial?

        • So are you guys saying that we can order online and submit a claim even if the actual product is delivered after 31st?

        • No you don't, it just has a screen replicating the details you've already entered which you print out and send with the proofs.

        • That actually makes more sense though doesn't it?

    • There were no start/end times stated for the Promotional period dates, I'm assuming the Promotional period ends at 11:59:59PM on the 31st Dec? Is that correct? (I have yet to submit my claim, as I only bought my console yesterday night). Thanks.

    • Thank God. I registered my details on 30th but no confirmation email yet. I now have few weeks to chase it up :-)

    Of the T&Cs: Para 6(d)
submit your Online Claim Form … along with a scanned copy of your Eligible Purchase receipt during the Promotional Period (25-31 Dec).
If you do not have the ability to submit a copy of your Eligible Purchase receipt online, you will print out the Online Claim Form and mail this, along with a copy of your Eligible Purchase receipt … by 31 January 2014

So you must register by 31 Dec in both cases.
As it reads if you scan and submit it must be done by 31 Dec or print and submit by 31 Jan.

The biggest issue here is the discrepancy between the T&C's and the steps to follow on the main page. The main page clearly states you must purchase during the promotion period (25/12 - 31/12) and register via the claim form during the redemption period (25/12 - 31/1).

  • I jumped on the Target site for a look - all sold out.

  • Ended up getting one in store, there were heaps left apparently. Does anyone know if an online order can be cancelled or do I need to collect then take to the counter for a refund?

    • Get one too, thinking about the same question, I think I'm gonna call them to cancel

      • Let us know how you go with the call to cancel if you don't mind???

    • If you have a look at the email they sent it says you can't cancel the order because 'the item is being packaged at our warehouse ready to be shipped to you'. Somehow I doubt that in this case given its christmas but that's what they say.

Normally you have to wait until the item arrives in store, take it out of its delivery box and walk to the front counter and return it. The time I did it the pick up was at the lay by counter which was at the back of the store. Personally I haven't tried ringing up to cancel, might be worth a try.

    • which store did you end up going to?

  • I'm going to ask a silly question but better to be safe than sorry. I have 2 westfields cards (Scoopon - The first offer and facebook ones) and I wanted to spend them on the xbox. Would that affect the promo in any way? I've scanned the t&c many times and nothing came up, hope I didn't miss anything.

    • +1

Probably not but westfield cards can be used at any woolworths so they are not difficult to use. I wouldn't bother.

      • I meant like target is at my local westfields. Just I couldn't spot anything in the t&c that states that the offer won't be valid if i used gift cards.

        • +1

Don't think using gift card is gonna change anything, but the thing about cashbacks is that you never really know if you're getting it or not…. So I guess use it at your own risk, or you could just pay for the Xbox and buy something else using the gift cards.

        • Sounds good, I was going to buy a few games anyway so I'll put the vouchers towards that. Thanks for the advice :)

  • Bought one from city target store 1 hour ago..sales person said 2 more left..

  • Target Willows gave me the Xbox and will put my click and collect on the shelf when it arrives. The guy said he thinks there's 4 more out the back but one gut was coming back soon to pick one up.

At least 8 at JB HiFi for $189.

  • None left at Target Broadway

    • Yep there were only 4, and 4 of us all got it at 7am.

Can anyone tell me if you need the serial number to get the cashback offer or just the receipt?
Theres nothing to stop anyone buying one applying for $100 cashback then returning the unit for a refund (Ok you dont end up with an xbox but you get $100 off Microsoft for nothing?)
I'm guessing to stop this happening you will need to open the box maybe or ??

    • Definitely don't need the serial number at time of registration. I just took a photo of my receipt and uploaded it.

    • +1

Yep, I don't see any reason why you couldn't claim the $100 off with the scanned receipt and then return it, if you're that way inclined.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft Regional Sales Corporation (Promoter) would double check to see if you have returned the product before the 28th February 2014 via contacting Retailers (it's probably one of the reasons why we have to wait so long to get our 'cash back' returned to us - It involves quite a bit of manual labour and 3rd parties' (Retailers) wait time to gather relevant Retailer data); simply by requesting an exported spreadsheet of returned Xbox 360 4GB models from each Retailer involved, and then collating this data into one sheet, and then checking if your unique product transaction ID listed on your receipt matches the respective unique ID of your purchase in the data supplied by the Retailers; to see if your X360 was returned. …and Ta-dah!

Nothing is ever for nothing; in this corporate & consumerism fuelled world. Hope that helps! (I work in IT and know how easy it is to perform spreadsheet lookups/checks like these, in a forever digital world it's not impossible; at most, it's just time consuming work).

Of course there's not much stopping you from returning the product after the 28th February; apart from (I presume) most Retailers having a 30-day/60-day return policy put in place any ways, which is also partly why we have to wait around 2 months to get our 'cash back', it's a wait game, to see who returned and who didn't imo.

tl;dr: In the end, hopefully you were enjoying your product, instead of leaving it in your closet, collecting dust, waiting to be returned for a measly $100, only to be supposedly rejected from a Retailer and the MS cash back offer; = your loss for paying nearly $200 on a console that's worth probably ~$130-$140 today.

        • It would easier for M$ to match against the serial number if they would like to double check.
They chose NOT to. Harvesting the data from retailers (esp. from DJS and MYR) are almost impossible and cost $$$$!

  • Got one from Bull Creek WA. Bit of a line formed and reckon they would be low or completely out of stock pretty quickly.

  • Got mine from Kippa-Ring QLD. Had to ask as there were none on display at the time

  • plenty of stock at Target Brisbane CBD

Guys can someone enlighten me - do we really need an official xbox hdd or can we just use any external hdd lying around?

    • +1

I checked this out yesterday. There is a way to make most types of Western Digital HDDs work as an Xbox 360 HDD. It uses a program called hddhackr and you need a hddss.bin file (Google it) for the drive size (max is 320GB).

      Link: http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/threads/how-to-create-a-xbox…

I wasn't successful however as the hddhackr program is very finicky about the type of SATA chipset used on your PC and will not always detect the HDD if the SATA chipset isn't right so it says "No ATA devices present". I tried on three different laptops (two HP and one Lenovo) and could not get it past that message.

Ultimately I decided to just go for the JB HI-FI XBOX 360 HDD deal @ $72 delivered even though I have a compatible Western Digital HDD that can be 'hacked' to make an Xbox 360 HDD.

As for cheap games I got some used ones on the way (Ebay is your friend), many Xbox 360 games are region free so you can get them from many different places and don't need to buy just AU store ones.

  • Purchased and submitted cashback form. Haven't received a confirmation email. I'd advise anyone who submits to take screenshots! Sent an email asking for confirmation.

Did anyone else receive a confirmation email?

  • Just bought one from Target Warringah Mall for $179. Store opened at 7:00 and I had it done by 7:04. You need to ask at the counter and refer to the print catalogue, they bring it out from the back room (not on display).

Just submitted the online cashback with a PDF scan of the receipt uploaded. Received e-mail from the cashback site that the cashback will be deposited by Feb 28, 2014. The cashback site is run by promtel.com.au.

Store at castle hills have more than 10 available.

    • Can vouch for this. I bought mine at 730pm on 27/12 and they had at least (!!) 30 left. Store rep told me he had bought 6 himself on the 25th and had already received his refund.

  • Seems to be plenty of these available. Chatswood store had a storage cage set up next to the register with about 20-30 of them inside, ready to be sold. Apparently they got a large shipment in recently.

    • They will probably drop the price to ~140 after Dec 31st. Price protection :)

      • Oh I forgot about shopping protection and paid by depite card!

  • A shame the Target website doesn't show which store has stock..

    • Just call up your local targets :)

  • +1

Done, Campbelltown Target (Mac Sq - plenty of stock).

Not sure what the confusion about the T&C's is really all about.

    • Buy xbox and get receipt between 25 - 31 Dec.
    • Fill in the online claim form between 25 - 31 Dec.
    • If you can scan your receipt you attach it when you do the online form.
      *** OR ***
    • You print the form you just filled in, attach your receipt and post it by the Jan 31.

No serial req'd, just purchase date, store / location & date.

  • Thanks OP, couldn't resist - still a few left at the Chatswood store as of about an hour ago for those in the area.

  • was at Mt Ommaney target, plenty of stock.

  • bendigo - target has around 16 and JB hifi has bloody heaps

  • Was able to get one at target! Cheers op.
Directly opposite to target was eb that were selling the same thing for $198. A lot more people went to eb for some reason…

  • I kind of got my Xbox for free!
Bought the Xbox bundle with need for speed

I got this deal but at $170 with coles staff discount card.

    I filed my claim already.

I have to wonder, since serial # is not required, what happens if you give the receipt for someone else to use? I know they'd be able to check receipt numbers, but it would seem to be quite a bit of work to cross reference everyone's receipts with everyone else's.

Or if you buy it, scan the receipt, refund it and buy it again, scan the receipt, etc… Would they know it got refunded the first time? Would they have to check with the retailer on every claim to make sure it didn't get refunded?

I don't intend to do this but it's an interesting thought on a theoretical level.

    • +2

Well considering they've got until the end February to pay out I would think 'cross referencing' receipts would be doable. Yes, it's a lot of work but Microsoft has outsourced the work to Promtel. As per the Promtel website, one of their specialties is 'data management'. I would assume this involves using a database to capture information such as 'store of purchase' and 'receipt numbers'.

Having said that, recording the serial number would have been the easiest way to confirm the validity of a claim.

    • I'm pretty sure Microsoft Regional Sales Corporation (Promoter - Promtel) would double check to see if you have returned the product before the 28th February 2014 via contacting Retailers (it's probably one of the reasons why we have to wait so long to get our 'cash back' returned to us - It involves quite a bit of manual labour and 3rd parties' (Retailers) wait time to gather relevant Retailer data); simply by requesting an exported spreadsheet of returned Xbox 360 4GB models from each Retailer involved, and then collating this data into one sheet, and then checking if your unique product transaction ID listed on your receipt matches the respective unique ID of your purchase in the data supplied by the Retailers; to see if your X360 was returned. …and Ta-dah!

      • +1

I see. It kind of explains the long wait time for redemptions, but it sounds like a lot of work, especially in this case when there's so many different retailers.

I've already been playing my unit. Not planning on returning it. But because I jumped in late in the cycle, I've played all the multi platform games on other systems which leaves just the exclusives, some of which are now hard to find, and the first party titles don't tickle my fancy.

Wouldn't have bought it for $200, but for $70 (after discount), well worth it.

  • +1

I dont think it is economically feasible to match every single receipt from multiple retailers. They have a different platform and trying to extract the data will take lots of $$$ and time.
I don't think it is a worthy exercise. And YES.. it can be done.

The percentage of customer returning the console will be negligible taking the benefit of cashback and the
cost of auditing may outweigh the benefit. And also that M$ will need to clear out the excess XBOX 360 and I assume that the price of XBOX will drop to ~A$100 by next year

    • I agree. They couldn't even bother accepting serial numbers for the consoles and you think they'll be getting all the info from retailers? Possible, yes, but I think it's unlikely. I'm sure they'll data enter the store and receipt number and that's about it. Considering you can buy from anywhere except auction sites I think it makes it even less likely.

    • The only lengthy part about this is manually looking up and entering in receipt product IDs from each customer, getting the customer to type in their Serial Numbers would have been significantly more efficient on their part (apart from the promoter still having to check if the serial is a valid one (which they would have had to have had pre-planned on their website's validation code), and not mistyped), but eh, who knows, maybe they will skimp on it.

I still haven't opened my box yet, (I've been really busy and unmotivated to open up anything really, I feel like returning it). It was an extremely valuable deal; I would have never bought it otherwise. Prices are back up to $198 though. I snatched Forza 4 and Forza Horizons, and have been watching YouTube videos of them ever since. I come from a PC & occasional PS3, PS2 and PS1 gaming background, so like many here, I have played most other multi-platform games already. There are X360 emulators (http://xbox360emulator.net) available on PC for X360, though, not sure how good they are yet.

  • gona go pick one up now, I don't have a scanner though, can I just take a picture of the receipt with my mobile phone??

    • If it looks clear enough and they can see all the details it wouldn't be an issue.

  • Did anyone receive confirmation email after claim submission? I haven't received mine yet.

    • Yep, mine came through very quickly after I put my application in.

    • Got mine pretty much straight away. That was for a scanned receipt.

  • +1

So funny how many unboxed Xbox 360 4Gb consoles are on eBay at the moment. It's interesting to see how much peoples time is worth.
