eBay Big Sunday (28th Sept) - 20% off The Good Guys Store on eBay

21027
CGOODGUYS20

WARNING
Lots of reports of price hiking prior to the sale, therefore do your research before purchasing. I've seen some decent deals on some items, but others the Not So Good Guys have done the sneaky!

Official Response from The Good Guys:

We definitely do not increase our prices before a sale. We maintain competitive prices that fluctuate with the market. We currently have a sale running from 7pm-7am on certain items, which is why our prices may appear to be increasing during the day.

        • Just so we know which part of the offer or conditions "creates a misleading impression in your mind"?

        • +1

You got to remember though, eBay themselves are doing the promotion, it isn't TGG doing the promotion. Which is where their lawyer will argue.

Even when you do a checkout and show the receipt, it will say you paid them $x not "$x minus 20%", therefore to TGG take those transactions as full cash transactions. No discounts at all.

Where as eBay who actually gets the hit of the 20% off then uses it to balance out their sheets. Essentially eBay will do the calculations of Fees - 20% of item = write off amount.

I don't think you have a case here, other than TGG doing something that will annoy their customers, however its not in their wrong.

Its like me starting a company, then saying "I will give 20% off everything at coles" and coles then goes and ups all the prices by 5%, it isn't actually illegal as they are 2 different entities. I cannot control what Coles does, and Coles cannot control what I do. Just will result in a heap of unhappy customers.

  • +5

I agree, prices seem inflated and postage seems to have gone up.

  • +6

Ah, My very first Neg. Have been looking for a worthy candidate for the past four years. Was looking for a fridge and my local TGG has a advertised price cheaper than their discounted price on eBay.

    • Got the links to show this?

  • Logitech UE Boom is currently on special for $148. Less 20% + $5 postage will bring it to $123.40. Not a bad price if your in the market for a bluetooth speaker from what I've seen and it rates pretty highly in reviews.

  • Apparently we have 48 hours to pay for an item on eBay before the seller can launch a non-payment dispute. So in order to mitigate risk of price hikes, could we buy after 10am Friday and wait until the sale to make payment with the 20% discount applied on the first price?

  • What good is a discount when you pump the prices up before the sale? #TheBadGuys

  • Neg for price increase, everyone should complain to eBay, enough people lodge a complain and they'll do something about it. Unless eBay are in it together with the GoodGuy

    • Lol, eBay won't do anything about it. They are still earning money + publicity. It is just the customer losing out which to eBay they don't really care.

Unless everybody boycotts the sale, however I highly doubt everybody will. I bet many of you will still suck it up and order from them.

  • +4

I am going to suggest eBay not to disclose offer before 10am Sunday in the future in a way to prevent sellers from increasing items' price.
DC59 animal price increased from $524 to $548!

    • Was the DC59 a part of the overnight sale TGG was holding? /edit: Still $499 on the ebay I'm looking at.

/edit2: I see there are two bundles, or versions of the DC59, at $499 and $548.

    • Indeed, it is back at $526 now for the 'night time sale'. So TGG prices are more jumpy than the Newcastle Utd manager!

    • +3

The purchase history shows about 55 sold at $548, and a couple at $526 in recent days. If you buy at the higher price on Sunday you'll get it for $448. Please explain in less than 300 words how this is not a great deal.

      • Well said, ridiculous claims of jacking up prices, and no evidence

        • The winner here is Dyson.

  • +7

I was watching 3 items since yesterday.

Camera lens, Soundbar and memory stick.

Noticed that all 3 of them jacked up by 5-10% this morning.

    Such unethical greedy practices.

    • Were those items a part of the overnight sales TGG was having?

      • +5

I believe the overnight sales were only available on the TGG website. All the items I was watching were on eBay.

        • I'm just reading between the lines from the tweet posted earlier. /shrug.

        • +2

@LaTerrible: same prices on both sites. One is animal stick vacuum

        • @kbk: Yep, noticed after I looked a little closer! I don't keep up much with the Bose of vacuum cleaners, lol.

Ah well, the item I've been watching has gone up an entire $1 since this morning, inline with the TGG website updating post-overnight sale.

    • -1

TGG have claimed otherwise above so in lieu of whinging here why wouldn't you email them with your evidence? Never know they might even offer you one or more of the items at your claimed price. If nothing else at least you'll be keeping them honest.

  • +2

Added an item this morning, and now I get the below message. Stupid Sale TGG.

The seller revised one or more of the listings in your cart. Please review the updated listings before proceeding.

  • +7

Based on a list of 26 items (Vacuums, Shavers, Dishwashers, Microwaves, Dinner sets, etc) I've been watching, there was a consistent 2-6% price increase since late last night (with the exception of dishwashers which had a 1% increase). The highest price increase was a 14% increase for a Logitech Wireless Mouse (M235).

Seems abit dodgy. If there are random price changes I was expecting some to increase and some to decrease, there were no price decreases for the items on my list.

    • +1

Here's TGG purchasing history for the M235 mouse. Interested in what you think it suggests?

Official Response from The Good Guys:

LoL, you can say ANYTHING when you LIE! Like, hey did you know I'm an Astronaut? Prove that I'm NOT!

    • +3

Strawman. There are definitely things about the way this has been handled that are worthy of auditing and questioning - caveat emptor at every step - but your argument is not it.

      • +2

        huh?

        • Precisely.

    • +4

Ask them why they double their shipping prices.

  • +7

    Post all your complaints here..

    Let them have it…

    https://www.facebook.com/thegoodguysAU

It's so convenient that prices move up just prior to a sale..

And thing is they aren't actually losing 20%, it is paypal that pays it..

They are greedy and want more profit..

    • +2

      I love the reply:

Hi Tyler, we can assure you that we do not increase prices before sales or promotions. We do currently have a sale running on our website from 7pm-7am which is why the prices may seem to decrease overnight. Thank you.

Are they oblivious to the complaint ??

      • Well, no, they're not oblivious. The passive aggressive statement was asking if TGG are raising prices before the eBay promo. The rep answers plainly that the prices of their items are merely going up and down in line with other, simultaneous promotions being run independent of the eBay one. The item I've been watching today went up by $1 at one point, before going back to its original price, suggesting that there are any number of different things going on with their online price database, none of which are likely to be insidious or malevolent.

I'd wager a good amount of items that people have been moaning about price increases have had similar price fluctuations throughout the day, and hopefully by Sunday 10am they have settled into the lower of those prices!

        • +2

I'm not on either side of the 'debate' here as I have no interest in buying anything, nor do I pay attention to the prices of anything electrical or sold at TGG - so my input would be nil - but I'd hardly call your experience 'scientific':

The item I've been watching today went up by $1 at one point, before going back to its original price

Perhaps if you kept an eye on several different items over a couple of days like other people have here… and report back.

Again, I'm not doubting you, or anyone else here. But it seems like you're quite certain without testing things out more thoroughly as others have… for example this member

but of course there are several variables which could explain price fluctuations, not all of which are intentional price increases for this sale..

        • +2

@waterlogged turnip: I'm not claiming to be doing - nor is anything anyone doing in here even remotely close - any kind of scientific discovery here. It's just common sense. I'm not certain of anything, just throwing out simple explanations to some of the more ridiculous statements being made in this thread. The place is full of conspiracy theorists, and I just want to balance that out with common sensibilities, lol.

It's no big secret that retailers adjust their prices many times a day, for example, and anyone who has picked up a game on launch day will know that the advertised price will be many times higher than what you can pick it up for by lunch time that day, after Dick Smith, JB, BigW and Kmart all hack their prices down through the day.

        • +3

@LaTerrible: Dead right and unless someone has charted prices over a good period of time they're doing nothing other than reporting a temporary price "spike" (all 1-4% of it in many cases it seems, which seems trivial when a 20% discount is being offered).

Despite all the same fluff claimed about the last EBAY sale not one of the half dozen items I was watching changed 0.01c either way. Using the same extrapolation the complainers do I can therefore claim that ebay sellers are ALL perfectly honest and every deal is kosher.

Perhaps someone will post a free course on understanding "new" retailing pricing practices because the one on properly validating your complaints seems to have been a dismal failure.

        • @LaTerrible: Yeah. Personally I refuse to + or - the deal or anyone elses comments (apart from the plainly incorrect/ludicrous ones lol) until the actual sale day. I think the best way to judge would be to 'watch' several items closely over several days leading up to Sunday… then see what the eventual prices are on Sunday. It probably is jumping the gun to expect that any price rises prior to Sunday are fixed until Sunday's sale… and then will drop once the eBay sale is over.

But we'll see. Makes it all the more confusing when stores have all these concurrent sales going on, like the nighttime TGG sales and all that. Prices are fluctuating all the more. Very annoying for people keeping an eye on items they're keen to buy.

As I said, I'm not interested in buying anything at all, but I can understand the frustration people have if the items they're after are varying by up to a hundred or more dollars at a time.

All this drama does just seem a little premature…

      • where did u find the response to my statement?

        • On their FB page. Its Under the section post to page. Can't figure out how to copy and paste a direct link to put here

        • @jazzymc:

          yeah i found it

though it was not obvious to see which icon it was..that had the reply

          ==

if everyone went on their facebook and posted a similiar message…

that would make a hilarous prank..

we can see if they just copy and paste the same response

  • +3

Can someone tell me how i can revoke pos vote?

Prices have increased. Xperia z2 this morning was $624 + $5 delivery. Now $634 +$5 delivery.

    • +1

And it's back to $624 now, as part of their night time sale.

      • +2

        Wow…

They must be watching this thread. Lol

        • Haha, it'd be great if they were! Just in case they are: do me a deal on two (2) Moto G gen2 editions for $400 delivered! c'mon!

    • Revoke the revoke?

  • Thanks Neil for changing the title back to the original … I was waiting to see how long it would take before the moderator would fix that. At least I got away with it for most of today :)

  • +2

Checked with Samsung that their Cashback (valid until end of Sept) would not honour ebay.com.au transaction on TGG store. So I can get the $75 off my fridge if I order on ebay. It now works out just $40 cheaper if TGG still keep the current price online.

    • +2

They may not be able to tell it's from Ebay store. You should be able to get a fairly normal looking Good guys receipt. It would definitely be worth putting in the claim to try.

  • I love this idea that "prices naturally fluctuate".

Odd how we've never seen prices go DOWN during an ebay sale isn't it?

    • +1

post that message on their facebook page

      • ACTUALLY i have seen a product go down and currently it is STILL down

    • -3

Every item I bought during the last 15% off sale was down by 15% (which will come as a huge surprise to some of the premature ejaculators on this deal no doubt), but you don't mean that of course. What you mean is that it's odd that businesses don't go out of their way to cater for the entitled view of a few whingers. As with every one of these promotions there will be good deals and not so good deals.

Here are a few basics on pricing fluctuations. Retailing and marketing use "big data" to attract constant turnover and income and to keep people looking onlione or coming through the doors. They also keep an eye on "the market" and their own sales - hence price fluctuations and varying offers in-store, online, and in different locations. Sometimes human error is involved in pricing, sometimes manufactureres give retailers special deals, sometimes retailers buy bulk at special prices, sometimes they offer loss leaders. There are plenty of reasons why prices fluctuate but in the end as long as a business isn't contravening laws canny consumers get to vote with their wallets.

  • I'm going to buy one of these Philips QT4022 beard trimmers. Their price is the lowest I can find before the 20% off- $39.95 ($31.96) + $5.18 p&h

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121439871609

  • +2

.. sorry I removed my comment as it was in error

  • +4

Sad that they can't pass on the 20% off by doing nothing…

I mean why go to the effort to hurt consumers and eBay's promotion simply to gain more…

  • I note the prices of electronic goods on the site have indeed changed but could this be due to weakening of A$ as goods are coming from Hong Kong and Taiwan?

  • +2
  • +3

stuff them hiking their prices up! fail! not good guys at all after all!

    • -1

What are you looking at? I'll send them an email and ask what's going on if you like.

      • +1

Where can you find longitudinal prices like the one you have mentioned above for the mouse?

I need to look up the Yamaha v377 receiver. Was between 497-499 until today. Staticice still shows 497 but the site now shows 549.

        • I found a few on ebay by looking at the item listing, and clicking on the "More than 10 available/48 Sold" section. The "48 Sold" link shows you historical pricing of those items sold, but of course, only works for items that they've sold.

Unsurprisingly, it shows prices have gone up and down significantly over the last few months, in line with promotions, AUD changes and so forth.

        • -1

Yes only the purchasing history tells you the price changes. You can also see when they've made revisions to an item but not what those revisions were. There will undoubtedly be a few eyebrow-raising rises - yours might be one - which I'd certainly query with TGG. If they can't provide a reasonable answer then they are sailing very close to the wind in regard to consumer law.

Why wouldn'y you buy that receiver from this guy - $429 delivered? He offers a further 10% off if you ring through. (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/YAMAHA-RX-V377-5-1-ch-AV-Receiver…)

        • +2

          @LaTerrible:
I am unable to view the sold section for some reason.
Anyway, here are cached links for this item between 15th and 23rd. Staticice is updated till 25th. The times if I have to believe from the pages are not from the night sale periods.

Let me be clear. I am not against what you or Possumbly are stating. I am reasonably mature to understand those fluctuations but I am surprised at how inflexible some are; not accepting any evidence anyone seems to present and blaming it on price or AUD flucuations for a change of over 10% a day???

This item might have been a 1000AUD when released. Does that mean I should not complain if it goes up to that amount now? Why is this item which was 497 for a while now, suddenly go up to 459 2 days before a sale? AUD flucuations by 10%? Come on, be reasonable in your arguments. Why is that none of the items I am watching have gone down in price?? Well, maybe they will after the ebay sale??

And like I mentioned earlier, my neg is to make sure people are cautious and NOT to avoid the deal. In the case of this item, the diccount is only around 10% if it remains at the same price and might not necessarily be a good deal now. Having said that I might still pick up something else which looks like a good deal on Sunday. It is a middle ground which you guys do not seem to accept. One does not need to be crucified for negging a deal. Chill out a bit. You cannot expect the whole world to agree with you at all times and accept that we can agree to disagree at times.

        • -1

@kbk: that appears to be a TGG special and not TGG Ebay.

          No doubt a few smarties will use TGG's 120% 30 day price guarantee as per Unity1's post on 18/04/2014 - 04:12 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/137912?page=8#comment)

"Nokia 625 is now $268 at Officeworks. Time to go back and claim $22.80 back under The Good Guys 30 Day Price Guarantee".
          He got his refund.

        • +3

          @Possumbly:
I love your persistence!! No offence meant. But it was 497 even on eBay store as well. Don't have a screenshot to prove though

        • @kbk: Good job. Kudos to you. I hope you get a good outcome.

I'm not suggesting there won't be some less-than-satisfactory pricing, just reacting to the hysterical and demonstrably false claims of a few twats who think nothing of trashing a retailer's reputation based on no understanding of retail price flucs and no or little actual evidence. That is simply puerile and disgraceful behaviour which deserves the kicking I'm giving it.

A quick look at the last TGG ebay deal (30%) shows a lot of satisfied people. HOWEVER if they fiddle with prices and delivery costs then they deserve to be brought to book. One way to do that is play the price guarantee game, another is to contact them and report back publicly - on here or on their Facebook page.

Negging the deal in advance is nonsense but as we know Ozbargain has more than its share of that.

        • -1

@kbk: I accept your word but my guess is that they were price matching their in-store "special" which is no longer available. Still, it's not a good look for them and I think they underestimate the smarts younger consumers in particular have these days.

  • Do they sell PS3 Controllers?

On prices, they have publicly said they don't mess with the prices. It would be easy to check this and they would be in the shit from Fair Trading if found they did. So that public statement rules it out for me.

  • +2

I don't understand. Is ebay/PayPal compensating TTG with the 20% difference? If so why?

    • +1

Ebay give 10% and the bad guys share 10%, win-win for them, only customer will lose!

  • +2

Wow, really dont want to give good guys any business after that game sale a while ago when their online system let way too many orders through and now this dirty price hiking.

  • +1

We should spread this -ve experience to everybody else asap, so we can boycott them not to buy, TGG is hopeless …

    • -1

That would be why they are a successful business and have a 99% positive rating on their ebay site. It seems that whatever you're spreading would be better off on a vege garden.

Not sure about price history but they just increased postage from $9.95 to $13.48

Which would seem entirely reasonable given the size of the product and the likelihood that they'll be either paying OT or putting on additional staff to cope with the expected demand.

I also notice in the product revisions. the the "Buy It Now Price" has been updated 4 times in in the last 5 days. Not sure what since I haven't been tracking the prices. Postage now back down to $9.65.

        • @Possumbly:
Lol. That's not how shipping costs work. I'm paying for one item, it doesn't take a whole warehouse of monkeys to pack and wrap it.

I don't charge for my time in shipping, neither should they.

@Merlict: Lol yourself. Businesses have costs, some choose to defray them to get business (ie cut into their margin), some absorb them for short periods. Others pass on the costs one way or another. If you think $13 delivery for a gas cooktop with 20% discount is unreasonable you're living in entitlement land. Then again it seems you think you're the only customer TGG has to cater for so nothing would surprise.
