$2 Sandwiches at 7-11 are back !!! again, let the debate begin if they are tasty or not… at $2 its not a bad deal especially the big packs. It begins from midnight tonight (Tuesday).

    What is disguskting is the fact that they only do it to their own. They know exactly the hardship thses students/immigrants are going through because they have been there themselves, and they use that to take advantage of thr most disadvantaged. It isnt just 711. It is very widely spread.

  • The place where I used to work, used slurpee and coffee cups were reused by the owner , she used to clean them with water and reuse them for customers use. They go to any lengths to save the money.

      Looks like we are going to neg a lot of the MSY (and other individually owned PC shops deal going forward).

      Whilst I totally agree with the reason why so many ozbargainers are frustrated, and do not want to debate the potential associated legal issues, I would like to point out how many people are underpaid in Australia. (sorry, not only overseas student). If you have worked in a restaurant (not just Asian ones), or individually owned retail shops, you will understand where I am coming from. Maybe ignorance is bliss?

      Having my rant here, not to justify the action of 7-11 because I do see evil in them.

  • Great deal BUT I too cannot support the company any more. Hard decision to make though:
    + vote to highlight this deal to increase awareness of the 7-11 exploitation, or
    - vote to show my disgust at the owners and shareholders (not the franchisees or workers)

    I went and got a pretty nice ham cheese tomato sandwich.. Pretty good for $2
    So while there I decided to give the $1 coffee a go.
    It is shit…
    truly shit.
    Not worth $1 imo.

        • It's basically some instant mix in the bottom of a paper cup. I cheat and add milk to it (from the coffee supplies), which helps to cut the "sweet" taste.

      I went through a period when I was forced to take less than "propper" pay because it was all the work that I could find, and I needed an income.
      And, yes, I was born here.

      • Ok. So reading the story, it reports that they underpaid workers who were on student visas. However, they did pay them 20 hours at full rates, which is the maximum that the visa allowed them to work.

        The workers go on to say they worked 40 hours, while admitting this was more than they were allowed to work? I fully understand that these workers were underpaid for hours worked, but I can't see how a payout would be legal, as it would breach the 20 hour working cap? So any "payout" from Seven Eleven would be proceeds of criminal activity, so would need to go to the government?

        Maybe I am missing something in the article?

          The counter argument to that being, if they were paid a fair wage for 20 hours, they wouldn't need to work 40 in breach of their visa just in order to survive?

        • I'm not debating the 20/40 hours, or the rates of pay. I am just pointing out that legally they were only meant to be working 20 hours a week. So in working more than that they broke the law. It appears 7-11 also broke the law. But one of these former workers has four separate Fair Work claims on foot seeking unpaid wages in total of $140,000.

          Under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, it provides a scheme for restraining and confiscating the proceeds of crime against Australian law. Hence the $140,000 would technically belong to the Government, since it would have been earned unlawfully.

    Be careful of what you wish for. If 7-11 are forced to raise wages do you really expect all their staff to keep their jobs and current hours? The only outcome will be that some staff will lose their jobs and be worse off.

    FoxConn conditions are a billion times worse but we're all happy with our PS4s, Apple phones, Samsung TVs etc.

    There are SUICIDE PREVENTION NETS around the buildings where those products are manufactured. Just think about that. People working there can only dream of conditions like 7-Eleven. And we all partake happily in supporting those conditions.

    Maybe it's Hume's limited affections but it seems like Aussies don't give a toss about Chinese or foreigners and are happy to support the suffering of those people. Another case of not in my backyard, we only care about our own country and nobody else. Hypocritical.

        • To be fair, FoxConn factories are all the way over in China and similar factories are being used by multinational/foreign corporations (Sony, Apple, Samsung). 7/11, while foreign-owned, operates its stores physically in Australia so it's a lot easier for us Australians to effect/affect? change here.

          Besides, Apple cultists are going to religiously continue to buy Apple stuff so boycotting Apple is a tough ask.

    Were people here actually surprised when they discovered 7/11 underpays staff? I was actually wondering just how clueless the general public is over how pervasive cash-in-hand jobs are in Australia? Or is everyone simply playing dumb?

    I could personally turn in scores of businesses that underpay staff from personal experience and from the people I know or have known. If you want to find a bunch of the exploitative businesses just go to one of many English schools in Sydney and ask where each of them works when their allocated 20 hours are up (surprisingly they don't just come to Sydney to learn English and pay rent - many have aspirations to travel after moving so far). Then go on Gumtree and find all the "casual" jobs paying less than the minimum casual rate - rather than pay cash-in-hand a lot of labouring companies require an ABN so they can pay $15/hr. Then go to Sydney's CBD and enter all the takeaway shops - don't be surprised to find people on non-working holiday visas getting paid $12/hour. Go to the back of all the restaurants in Sydney and speak to all the kitchenhands - a good number of them are getting shafted. It won't take me long to find an underpaid hairdresser or nail technician.

    The only surprise is that it's a worldwide major corporation. Other corporations sub-contract their scams. They'll pay a labour hire company only $21/hr for a casual employee (one would assume should receive "casual loading") and never wonder how the employee gets their superannuation (that's because the labour hire agency pays them only a fixed $16/hr with no penalty rates and who knows if they have proper work cover).

    Of course I'm just going to sit behind my keyboard and do nothing like everyone here - partly because I know a lot of these underpaid victims are in desperate situations as it is and the government knows this too. And as we've found out recently, Australians are hesitant as it is bringing in a gestapo-like Border Force - so a Fair Work Force would not be well-received.

    (If you do wish to report your employer to the Fair Work Ombudsman good luck - their website registration was completely non-functional a month ago when I tried (due to javascript errors) and there isn't enough time in your lunch break to sit through the call waiting times).

      There's very little an individual can do. My wife is Chinese and is in one of these jobs, where the place she works at pays someone else (contracted) who then pays her around $15 per hour. I have contacted the authorities and have been told that our course of action is to confront the boss and ask him nicely to pay the proper amount. When I asked the obvious question 'what can we do if he just decides not to give her any more hours' then I was told that we would have to try to prove she was unfairly dismissed (difficult since she is casual) - probably in court (always easily accessible to someone with $0 annual income).

      Considering the extremely long time it's taken to get a job with anything close to regular hours that we can put towards paying rent then it seems pretty stupid to rock the boat. If we lived in a perfect world where people could easily find jobs then she would tell the boss where to shove it as I'm sure many of these 7-11 employees would have. Unfortunately though, we live in a world of high unemployment and a government cracking down on assistance.

      She is a recent immigrant (still on her temporary visa on the path to permanent) so she is ineligible for centrelink and I am a full time PhD student which the government deems is not worth of Ausstudy. We are truly desperate and that's the foundation of this despicable practice.

      And when she was studying she desperately wanted one of the jobs that paid proper Australian wages, like Macdonalds or Coles but the only job she could find was at Asian restaurants for $9-$12 per hour. Beggars really can't be choosers.

        Precisely. This is what I've observed. The assistance (let alone enforcement) by Fair Work is abysmal. Almost every single person in my social circle has worked in "cash-in-hand" jobs. Even my partner, who used to work in cafes across Sydney, has never been paid a legal wage. Her first legal wage was when she finally joined the corporate workforce.

        It really makes no sense that there is so little enforcement (or support for whistleblowers) of the minimum wages. It has caused a burgeoning industry where laws are being flouted with nary a consideration. What's worse is that it becomes especially detrimental to any establishment that actually pays fair wages, since they have a much higher "opex" as compared to places underpaying their staff.

    • It is not new news because everyone understands that there are many employers here who depend on renewed waves of desperate migrants to run their businesses. The unions, political parties and businesses are complicit in accepting this. However when the evidence is out there and exposed it makes it a big deal and that needs to happen more.

      • Funnily enough I was actually thinking of John Oliver's interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEVlyP4_11M) with Snowden (but for other reasons)! John Oliver was pretty much requesting an explanation from Snowden for the Lowest Common Denominator after realising that very few people have any idea about what's being discussed (which is probably true for most issues).

        I just wish people in their cushy contract jobs were a little more informed in how many Australians are living in poverty under the radar and how 7-Eleven workers are just the tip of the iceberg.

        I also wish more people would stand up for their rights in Australia but this is getting harder in the face of rising unemployment. I've worked on a huge project for a well-known HR company with hundreds of other contractors and I was apparently the only one that complained that overtime conditions weren't being met (they even used a completely unrelated award that lacked overtime provisions). Intimidation can be the default state in a employer-employee relationship even when nothing has been said.

        • In my industry it is not uncommon for people to work 60 hours and get paid for 40. Mind you, they do get paid a lot better than someone that works at 7-11.

    Great news for employees of 7-11… they can sustain themselves by purchasing a $2 sandwich for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, thus containing their daily sustenance costs to $6, which will help their half-pay go much further.

    I used to work for 7/11 a few years ago . I got paid 13ish an hour and i am citizen.
    I knew i was being exploited but i was very very desperate for money at the time.

    however i understood the cost of running a 7/11 and the store owner would work 22 hour shifts so that it became profitable.
    boycotting 7/11 wont help the store owner who signed a very unfair franchise agreement.
    If you guys want to help . Actually write* or or call head office .
    Even going on the facebook page will be better then not buying anything.

  • I'll pass. I've worked below minimum wage before, since it was the only place that ever offered me a job but I won't support any business that doesn't pay their employees a fair wage.

    Sucks, because I always loved 7-11. Hell, while I was working the aforementioned job I'd often pop in to buy some energy drinks on special.

    • Before Uber came along there was already a lot of fuss made over foreign student taxi drivers (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2010-08-06/desperate-indians-floo…). Australia is one of the most expensive countries in the world for foreign students and the Australian government is complicit in the importation and exploitation of cheap workers since education is an extremely lucrative component of our export services sector (the $15 billion industry is Australia’s fourth largest export, following iron ore, coal and gold). Apparently our educational system is nothing special by world standards either so they're throwing away their money if they don't intend on residency.

      The best action to take in the short-term is arguable. A lot of eateries in Sydney's CBD would shut down in a few years if crammed student housing flats and undeclared employments were heavily cracked down on. If Sydney and Melbourne only accepted students who could truly afford to live there they would end up as ghost towns relative to the way they appear now (100,000s of students and working holiday makers make a huge difference). Organisations like Fair Work "crack down" once in a while so the public won't focus on how they sit on their hands but their surprise is all an act.

It's the whole system here in australia that created unfair work practices as wages are not based on merits, old tax system , uncontrolled housing speculative , basic economic and cost of living policies driven by duopolies which isn't a reflection of a democratic country or society at all. No balancing act at all from the government.

    Picked up a couple of sandwiches from the 7-11 shop on the corner of Kent and Druitt Streets in Sydney.

    Verdict: Fresh and filling. Hardly "gourmet" grade material but generous amount of fillings (I tried the egg + lettuce / chicken + avocado) and handy when you're on the run (no waiting for a sandwich hand to build it for you).

    For $2ea,the sandwiches are good value. Wouldn't pay $5ea for them (normal price).

      I actually find them to be quite a reasonable lunch-in-a-hurry when in the CBD and you don't want to eat junk food OR pay a lot for good quality food. The chicken and mayo sandwiches are quite tasty and good value at $5. Even better at $2. Watch the drink you buy with it though… you may pay $4.50 for the drink, making the sandwich not so great value!

    I will boycott 7-Eleven until:
    7-11 start paying all staff at least the minimum wages they're entitled to
    7-11 agree to pay back all underpaid wages owing to current and former staff (with interest)
    7-11 publicly apologise to their staff and customers
    All 7-11 managers and franchisees who have broken the law, are held accountable

    For my opinion. This is really a FREE market driven business. If 7-11 pay less and the staff accept it, then it's fine. No one holding a gun and force those people to work "underpay". I agree their pay has potential to improve. On the other hand, if all 7-11 are shut down, end up the customers are suffered, they have to walk very far to get what they want or pay higher in other stores. I think they provide opportunities for people who just want to have flexible time to work overnight. Thanks.

      … except that labour laws in Australia are not 'free' — employers have to meet certain minimum threshholds. If some employers are underpaying their staff, they are effectively stealing from the other employers — because they get a massive competitive advantage with lower overhead costs.

    very simple… i guess ozbargain is about all the bargains, not the story behind the business and i think giving a neg vote for a incident behind the business and their payrate is nothing to do with the bargains here.
    please correct me if i am wrong

    to me this is 100% good deal, coz i am a low income owner, so better fill up my tummy rather than worrying and commenting other business practise in a bargain site, and vote the neg for a very good deal. very 2 different thing, i guess.

      I suggest you invest in a loaf of bread and other ingredients if money is so tight.

      • How much time does it take to make a simple egg, lettuce and mayo sandwich? By the time you boil and mash an egg, shred some lettuce, clean up etc it's easily a 15min job. If you're being paid more than $8/hr then labour cost alone makes a $2 sambo cheaper than DIY.

        Add some ingredients (say, 18cents of cheap bread, 15cents worth of lettuce, a 30cent cage egg, 10 cents worth of mayo) and the value proposition is even stronger.
