      • Depends on if you're locked in a contract or on a no-contract plan. Contracts can't freely come across without being paid out for the remainder.

  • Gah, two days after I activate my SIM for that 3 months of Amaysim 5GB for $11/month on Groupon. At least given the prevalence of these offers there'll probably be something by the time the three months is up.

  • +1

If I port my number from Vaya would I get the extra 2gbs?

    • Want to know this too.

    • No as Vaya is also on the optus network, you need to port out completely and then back in.

      • I spoke to a virgin rep about this and he said it's about 50/50 if you're from the optus network but another provider and porting over.

        • Here you go! I'm going to do this too, thanks @umadbrahhhh

          My guide to porting:

Buy a $2 SIM from an non-Optus network usually Telstra or Vodafone, someone you can call for customer service)
Register that SIM, you will be asked if you have an existing number that you'd like to keep - Yes. PLEASE NOTE: Porting your number away from your current provider will effectively cancel your service with them.
Wait for your number to be ported. An easy way to tell is that you will lose service on your current SIM. Your $2 SIM will now have your number. All calls will go to that SIM. You will need to add credit if you need to make calls or use the internet.
Go and sign up with Virgin Mobile, repeat step 2 with Virgin Mobile.
Note: Porting will only take place if the details on your account match ie. Name/DOB/Account number. Making sure these details match will greatly increase the likelihood of your number porting quickly.

I have no affiliation with any provider, only telco experience.

Hmm, their $20 plan only gives 250MB, this a huge 10GB. I don't need 10GB, would be happy with 3 and am getting by ok on 1.5 with Vaya at present. Something in between would be great. Defo a very good deal if you are a big data user though.

    • +1

me the same, all majors are fighting for $40+/m deals.
I wonder who will start to realise there're many only wants a fair $20/m deal. I'm on $20/m with telechoice and I dont use much at all, they must be making $15 profit from me every month.

  • +6

I can verify that you do not need to port networks or anything. I asked the service chat rep and I got the full 10gb being an existing Virgin Mobile customer. Cheers op!

    • I did the same but no matter how much I asked, could only get 8gb

      • I did the same and got told I couldn't upgrade :c

    • I asked the service chat and got 10GB first time around. I mentioned that I had been on a $29 plan for several years, and was willing to move up to $40 if offered 10GB.

      • Upgrades are included in this deal, you upgraded.

        • I was told I can't upgrade my plan:

Rep: I see.. The offer for the $40 sim plan with 10 GB of data is for new services (new number). If you want, I can connect you over to our customer service chat team, so we can find the best option for you.

I declined since this I was only interested in this one and was gonna panic upgrade.

Rep: May I interest you in getting a second service? Because if you will be getting the $40 sim plan with a new number, you will be getting the full 10 GB, plus both number (existing and new) will get an additional 1 GB on top of what you will be getting.

I said I wasn't so keen on paying dual plans for another 8 months

Rep: No worries! Just something to think about, as this is a limited time offer.

I didn't think I could push for it though, I was just asking if I could. The live chat service guy was nice and very friendly though. So I thanked and went on my way.

Maybe I'll try again later and ask a little harder or try transferring.

    • Yep also got upgraded as an existing customer. Been with them for 4+ years

    • Same here.

    • Me too. But the weird thing that she kept saying is "You can't downgrade to your old plan anymore." and she kept saying "The cost is $60 but you get $20 discount". Why not just tell me this is the new $40 plan?

    • I got them to match it. Their first response was they could only do 6gb….I just said thank you but I know others have had the deal matched and if you won't match I will look for other providers.

2 mins later the online guy came back and said yes we will match.

      Took 10 mins to change

  • +2

I'm on Optus $50-$10 broadband discount with 8GB.

I might hold off. Deals are slowly getting better

    • Same here. Be more hassle changing over. Can't even hit 6gb of my 8gb!

      • +1

Ha, I routinely get close as I stream a lot of music and now, don't mind watching the odd YouTube video.

And as I am on ADSL 2+ at home, it's often woeful and find myself using the phone.

    • +1

I'd take the deal, it's not likely to get better than this. Once April comes around they'll all be focusing on phone plans again.

      • Plus the plan is contract free hence switch again if necessary. Took me less than 5 mins to do mine.

      • I can see 12GB for 60 or in my case $50 coming by the year's end.

      • i agree, take deal. takes u 5 mins of ur time, literally.

    • No contract though, it's not much of an issue to churn.

  • Stupid tired eyes - I thought I read "100GB" in the title.

  • Got it done within minutes :) Cheers OP
Keep your eyes peeled for new deals from Virgin Mobile come 12th of Feb

*Remember that prorated charges apply the first month and the 50% applies on the second month to offset the prorated rate

I'm curious, do people use 10gb a month when they're out and about?

    • Easy. So easily use up that 10gb and more.
(I'm currently busy at work at the moment)

    • I have 8GB. Travel for work once a month so use phone as mobile hotspot to avoid Hotel WiFi charges

      • I see, that's a good point.

  • +1

If they had a global roaming offer or pack like Vodafone it would be considerably more attractive.

Note, on a like for like basis, Vodafone has similar for $50 for 10GB at present (4GB plan with bonus 6GB at present). For people with a Student ID, it will be even more comparable as they get a $5 discount, i.e. $45.

"*6GB/mth bonus data for use in Oz when you sign up to this plan. Offer ends 05/04/16. T&C apply.

    Hot offers
Student only offer - Get $5 off access fees when you sign up to this plan online. In checkout, select student under occupation and add your student ID. Offer ends 22/3/2016. T&C apply.)"

    • Also virgin charges a one off $250 non refundable credit to enable roaming.

      • Just read, it's either $250 one off or you must have paid 3 bills. It's still pretty ridiculous though:

        "Switching on Roaming
        1.Before roaming is enabled, you must meet one of the following criteria;
•You have paid your previous 3 bills on time and have no bills currently overdue
•You must pay for a once-off, non-refundable $250 credit on your account (this will apply to all new customers)

2.Once overseas, your phone should automatically select a carrier when switched on. You can manually select a network by selecting the 'Network' section on your phone.
3.You will receive a warning SMS when you begin roaming to advise you that high charges for using your service may apply.

Please note, once roaming is activated it will remain active until you request for it to be switched off."

It would be great if Vodafone could match it.

    • Agreed. Like the $5 roam like its home option with Voda. Hopefully they will match this. Does Voda offer data and overseas minute rollover though?

  • Is this data for the life of the plan?

    • According to the T&C, yes. It lasts until you cancel or change the plan.

  • dammit…still have 9 months left…

    • Legend has it you can upgrade plans. (just gotta get the right rep, transfer to the right rep or push a little according to thread)

  • Hang on … it's $40 for the first month only??

    • +1

$40 for the life of the plan, until you cancel or change.

      T&C:

"$20 Off on $60 SIM Plan: available when you're eligible for, and sign up to, a $60 SIM Plan with the switch/upgrade bonus data from above. You'll receive a $20 credit (not redeemable for cash) each month until you cancel or change plans."

      • Ahh, OK, they credit you $20 per month. I got confused when I went to checkout and it still said $60

  • Shame that Optus network is utter crap in my area.. Can't even get a signal! Otherwise a very good deal for big data users.

  • Just ordered. Confirmed with Virgin chat (lol) that it is indeed $40 a month and 10g in total a month if you come from another provider and do it online.

    • yes but only if your other provider was not on the optus network if they are you only get 8gb anyone know a way around this ?

      • +2

Yeah exactly. user: umadbrahhhh posted this helpful guide I used to get the 10GB, hope its helpful to you to:

        "My guide to porting:

  • $300 INT'L CALLS & TEXT INCLUDED, is that to ANY country, or just to specific countries only? Doesn't say anywhere on their page…

the PDF says International text (per 160 characters): 35¢

    Confusing :)

    • +2

Yes it is to any country, and that 35c is deducted from the $300 allowance ;)
(the allowance and data roll-over too… I have $383 and 20GB this month)

I've been with them for about a month and it has been gold for calling PNG!

You can check the rates here: https://www.virginmobile.com.au/international-rates/

Some of them have improved significantly lately. eg - on this plan PNG is 90c/30sec, on some older plans it was $25/min +40c connection.

EDIT: They allowed me to shift to the new plan with full 10GB allowance (+1GB for having 2 services on the one plan)

EDIT2: One word of warning - I have had 2 telemarketing calls on my mobile this week (after having none for years). It may be a coincidence but I assume virgin have put me on a list… will have to refresh my donotcall registration.

  • +1

$40 for 10GB is definitely a very good deal.

Mobile plans in AU are pretty lousy as it's all about marketing.
For example, you pay $15 for a very cheap plan that comes with 1GB which isn't enough for average users. Alternatively you pay a lot more ($50?) for excessive data (8GB) that average users don't need.

Why can't they provide something more sensible for us??? $25 for 3GB

  • Good deal if you can put up with optus network.

  • +2

Perfect plan to listen to Spotify in the car!

    • Automobile internet, GPS tracking software for your car security, Google GPS maps.

That's if you have reliable reception ;)

  • For those successfully upgraded through Virgin chat, are you getting 50% off first month access as well or only 10GB monthly data ? Just curious.

    • Yeah i got upgraded to this plan with 10GB data.
She also mentioned i got 50% off for the first and second month … (i notice on the online offer it's only first month)

      • Thanks eecchhoo, only 10GB monthly data for me, not getting the 50% off first month access. Good on you for getting 50% off for first and second months.

  • +1

Do we have to port over by the 11th? It might take a few days for me to port. Or is it sufficient to order the sim by the 11th to secure the 10gb?

  • It's great that Virgin treat newcomers much better than their own customers…

    Meanwhile I'm paying over $60 for 1GB…

    • Sorry but did you speak to a rep regarding this? I just had a (online) chat with a rep called Kat and she sorted me out. I was on the $40 sim only plan that came with 7 gigs. Virgin have been great, sometimes you just need to get put through to the right people.

      • I'm locked into a plan now. I tried to bargain with them before but they refused so I told them I was leaving and they didn't try to keep me. I then signed up with vodafone but I couldnt get reception at my house so I returned to Virgin (since at the time both optus and telstra were more expensive).

        But that's life.

        • That's unfortunate, as you can see though I think most existing customers here have stated they were able to get the deal. But I'm assuming it depends on your situation. As I mentioned, you just have to be speaking to the right people. The sales guys are definitely the wrong people to speak to if you're an existing customer.

  • Has anyone managed to get Optus to match it?

    • Tried with Optus - said they don't price match.

Hoping they come out with something soon as I'm after data sharing.

  • Existing Virgin customer, worked for me. Thanks!

    • +1

Same here. Wasn't about to pay the same amount for only 3GB. That'd be sacrilegious!

  • +1

Upgraded from existing $40 plan (with 4GB data). Now have 10GB data. Customer service is awesome. But I gotta pay prorated for this billing period. Ends up paying 7$ extra to finish the old plan and get on the new plan straight away. Great deal. Thanks OP!

  • online chat are offering the full 10GB as a goodwill measure to existing customers.

make sure u speak to premium department! (not front line sales plebs).

  • I'm tempted to move from the Vaya $18 1.5GB to this plan.. need more data. Do we need to have ported over by the 11th or just apply by the 11th for this deal to go through?

    • Once you apply they'll set up your account with a temporary number, and you can port later. So I can't imagine there'll be any rush.

  • +1

Existing customer here: Just spoke to the online chat reps and (as with others) managed to swap from the original $60 10GB plan, to this $40 10GB plan :) Winning! Fantastic service.

Also just a reminder, score an extra gb for listening to at least ONE song via the Guevara app :)

  • The coverage map may be outdated…..or is it really that bad.? To they fully use the 4g Optus network
Shows no 4g coverage for at least 50km near me…..
I'm currently on 4g with amaysim which supposedly uses Optus network also?
Have used Optus 4g+ recently and Telstra 4gx
Online chat couldnt confirm for certain that I'd get 4g in my area??

  • Went to online chat and managed to get the deal as well. Was on previous ozb deal, of $50-$10=$40+7gb, to now $60-20=$40+10gb. The roll over is crazy bonus as well.

FYI, 2 months ago was on $20+1.25gb. Have jumped twice since then. Very happy Virgin customer.

  • i called VM and was just told, as an existing customer, i cannot get this as it has to be a new service. who the f did i talk to?

and what might i ask is the "premium department" number?

    • +1

I used VM chat and got a guy called Jacky. He initially said that it's only available for new or porting customers. I told him I was successful in last month's promo, and that had same rules. Got upgraded due to being a loyal customer. Try the chat service.

  • +1

Hmm should I give up my grandfathered $19/2.3Gb+1Gb/$450 calls for this… decisions, decisions

    • +2

      I'm with TPG $20 1.5G $550 international call.
      With today's technology 1.5G isn't enough.

So I will just pay an extra $20 to enjoy life better. Don't restrict yourself

      • I came to that same conclusion. Netflix on the run… here I come!

  • Edited

  • Does anyone know if Guvera and Presto bonuses stack on this deal? If so this deal is pretty damn good

  • +1

I'm currently on the Virgin $20 BYO plan with a bonus 1GB of downloads, but for an extra $20 a month I'll go for this. I have hit my download limit once or twice and not having to worry about call times or the amount of texts I send will be handy.
$60 is too much of a jump but $40 is right in that area of temptation, and I'm a bit of a sucker. :P

And I just transferred over using the online chat and they gave me the 10gb even as an existing customer. :)

  • i know it says online only, but any chance to get this done in store?

    • fat chance, they'll likely fob u off and say call them up or do it online. little incentive for them (plus they wont have the power to do it). do the online chat, get a call back from premium.

      • +1

I did the last deal in store and the person did it no problems for me. Was in Booragoon, Garden city, Perth branch.

  • +2

I spoke with online chat and was told they couldn't do it as I'm on a plan until September 2017 but they dropped $5 off and gave me an extra gigabyte. Disappointed to hear others are getting the 10gb so I'm going to try them again!

    • +1

good for you you got extra GB and 5$ off. i just got a simple fat eff off

      • +1

Try them again man! Don't give up!

    • Unfortunate situations like yours is why I stopped going on plans and just buy my phones outright these days. It's more costly up-front but it's cheaper in the long run.

      • Well I'm paying $22 per month for "handset" repayment on an iPhone 6 on a 24 month contract. That works out to $528 over two years for a phone that costs more than $1000 new, so I'm not quite sure how it's cheaper in the long.

        • +1

I buy phones outright and then go on a sim only plan purely for the reason that a Sim only plan and a Plan with handset is not equivalent in value.
A samsung Galaxy S6 is $60 plan + $9 phone, but that $60 only gets you 4gb and no international credit.
$60 sim only gets you now 10gb of data, $300 international credit. that's more than double credit value and it's now for $40

        • Well it's good to see they've increased the value for handset plans. For curiosities sake how much would it save you taking into account equivalent plans without a phone etc.?

  • did the quick maths:

if i pay-out my plan to get get this, i shell out total til my plan ends, 784.

if I go ahead and get this in addition to my existing plan, i pay 777.

or in other words, an extra 240$ on top of my current plan to gain 7.5GB + 2GB (presto) extra

i just placed an addition to my existing account and will deal with porting when the time comes.

  • I'm kind of confused.

I'm with Spintel which runs on the Optus network. Do I need to port to something like Telstra then back to Virgin? Or can I just go straight from Spintel to these guys?

  • +3

Guys for those that are with another Optus provider, you should be able to get it done through chat without having to port out and back in. I just ordered online while I had a chat session open and she confirmed everything was in order and that porting straight from Amaysim won't be an issue:

    STATUS: CONNECTED
    Ann (Listening)
Ann: Hi I'm Ann. How can I help you?
Matt: Hi Ann, I've just noticed your online promo of the $60 sim only plan now $40 with 10gb. Can I order that now online and port my number over from Amaysim today?
    Ann: Hi Matt!
    Ann: Yes you can. :)
Ann: I'd be happy to help you get that deal.
Ann: Do you need nano or micro sim?
Matt: Thanks and there's no issue in porting from amaysim? I'd need a nano sim
Ann: No issue, even you're from Amaysim which is under Optus, I'll make sure you'll get the deal.
