    • You have an awesome first name. :P

      • Matt?

    • Did you get the 10gb + the 50% off first month? Did you talk just to the salesperson on the chat?

      • I got the 10 GB, but not the 50% off talking to the sales person on the chat (was already Virgin)

        • The service person I did the online chat with said I'd get the 50% off on the second month, because the first month was half being paid pro-rata. It sucks that it seems highly dependant on who you talk to as to what deal you get.
I saved a pdf of the conversation just in case though. :p

        • @fatpizza: I also had them email me the chat transcript in case they don't believe my own saved pdf for whatever reason.

Yep, just started a regular chat and mentioned the promo and she took it from there. Made sure I repeated the deal and had her confirm to cover myself:

Ann: Cool! Here's the link to start the order. https://www.virginmobile.com.au/Shop/Nano-SIM-Kit-Starter-Pa…
Ann: By the way, that will show $60 on the check out page. Reason is, that's the original plan, but you can disregard that coz the $20 discount will be applied by our billing team every month. It will show on the bill as well. :)
Matt: Ok but I don't need to pay anything upfront, right?
Ann: No upfont payment needed. :)
Ann: I'll be right here when you need me. Once you're done, you can give the order number to me and I can check if it has gone through or not. :)
Matt: Thanks, Ann - is there a special link or just the one online?
Ann: Just the link I provided.
Matt: oh and that also includes 50% first month, so first month will be $20 correct?
Ann: That is so correct. :)
Ann: I'll be right here Matt.
Matt: Thanks, Ann. Love your work!
Ann: Oh, no worries at all. My pelasure. :D
Ann: And we have a new family member.
        Matt: Hooray!
Ann: Welcome to Virgin Mobile family Matt! ^_^
        Ann: Everything's all set.
Matt: Just confirming that there will be no issue in porting from Amaysim? And that it's $20 for the first month and then $40 being $60 with a $20 credit each month for as long as I stay with Virgin?
Ann: Nope, I've already taken care of that for you Matt. :)
Ann: Yup, just $40 a month.
Ann: + 50% off on your first bill. :)

        • So they still gave you an extra 2GB even though you are coming from amaysim who are the same network?
Cause on the virgin site it says: 2GB bonus when you get a new number or switch networks^.

        • @kent08: Yes. I made sure to mention the total of 10gb in my chat and she confirmed it even coming from amaysim. I'll reconfirm when I get the sim and port my number but I have it confirmed in her chat so no reason to assume I wouldn't get it.

  • Done with the help of chat. The 300$ international calls at 60cts minute was the icing.

    • 40c/30 sec plus 40c
      call connection.
      Billed per 30 sec.

Thats for the UK. So I guess it varies for other countries.

  • Anyone tempted to chat to another provider (e.g. Vodafone), and use this offer as leverage to get their BYO plan data upgraded / costs lowered?

    • Tried with Optus but they said they don't price match.

    • Vodafone had a deal a few days ago (around Australian day) 10GB for $40/month on a 12 month Sim only plan with first 1 month half price and data workout

      Edit: 1 month, not 2

      • Darn it… missed this….

        • I rang Vodafone Customer Care three times on three separate occasions (more than 24 hours apart otherwise they will just 'honour' the same deal as they have previously offered to me within the last 24 hours). The first two times the call center person told me the best deal they could offer me was the Vodafone 4GB + 6GB bonus data for $50 offer they have at the moment. Today I got really lucky and Anuj the call center person offered me the same $50 plan with $10 credit for the first 12 months. Essentially this makes it $40 per month for the first 12 months and any time after that it would go back to $50 per month. The good thing is this is on a month to month plan so I am not tied to it for 12 months. Having said that, I must admit this is a pretty good deal and I don't think I will be changing out of it within 12 months anyway. Anuj even said if after 12 months when the plan reverts to $50 and I find a better deal with another provider, I could ring them again to try match the offer. :)

EDIT: Anuj from Vodafone couldn't give 50% off the first month access fee like Virgin does or $5 off if you are a student because he already gave me $10 credit each month which is still the best deal out of the three options.

  • Just spoke on the online chat and got the 10 GB (even though I'm already Virgin), but not the 50% off the first month… You win some, you lose some. Still a good deal

    • ditto here, put me down as another existing customer to get the full 10GB of data, but not the 50% off first month. they must be catching on. :)

btw, ur 10gb starts pretty much immediately, with whatever data uve consumed already this month (thus far) being zero'd out.

dont forget, this is NO CONTRACT and ROLLING DATA + PHONE CALLS, which means if u have a quiet month (or if ur o/s and dont use local data) u can effectively get 20gb data. *(now my head hurts!).

u can get out of this deal if u find a better/cheaper deal, even if virgin offer a $30 plan with half data that suits next month, the option is there.

      10gb is a game-changer.

      enjoy every1!

  • ill just stick to my vaya, wifi at work, home, and telstra hot spot.

  • yay, used the online chat to upgrade my $29/month. upgrade from 2GB to 10GB. again saying only up to 8GB, but you are a loyal and good customer, added another 2GB. Even I haven't asked for the first month half price, still feeling good.

Also, cancelled my broadband 2GB sim, which is $19/month. altogether save $3/month but got 6GB more data and unlimited calls. How can you save $$ these days, but ozbargain.

just need an extra battery pack for my phone. Thanks op.

  • I made an oopsie and transferred to a $2 sim just now, before i even received the replacment SIM. Should have waited… gotta try and live with no credit for a few days.

    • Did the same thing… No internet at home since I only run off my phone :(.

  • A question-

For international call rates which one do you choose from in the pull down menu here-

    https://www.virginmobile.com.au/international-rates/

Isn't it the $30-$60 plan option? And if so the rates aren't good.

or is it the $30-$80 SIM & $40-$130 PHONE PLAN FROM 8-OCT-15 (POSTPAID) option as the rates are better?

    • wouldnt it be $40-$80 sim plan, as effectively ur on a sim and not a phone plan… there are like 20 or 30 options, very confusing virgin!

    • It's the second one, the first one is for plans with a handset bundled.

  • +1

Can also verify, managed to upgrade to the $40/m with the 10GB despite being an existing Optus customer. Fantastic customer service from the online chat reps, even gave me 50% off the first month! Cheers OP :)

    • +1

I also managed to recieve the same deal. Spoke to their online support, said I was with Amaysim, and if they could hook me up with the full 10gb allowance. Seemed to work! Doing it through the online chat means you can keep a record, so if they stuff you around, you have written evidence to back you up.

  • No luck from me as an existing customer. They would only give me 6gb total data. Was chatting to Anjeline

    • try again, i had to go 3 times, ask for premium team.

    • Ask for Adrian, he sorted me out :)

  • I managed to get 8Gb by upgrading online and was able to keep my existing number. I figured that was good enough after being on the Big39 plan for a few years (which is not so big at all anymore :) ) Didn't bother haggling for the extra 2Gb although after reading posts from other existing customers maybe I should have

    • u should have.

      • Just jumped on chat this afternoon and played the loyalty card. Now upgraded to 10Gb so thanks for the heads up !

        • all the best, u deserve 10gb, heck we all do!! :)

    • Ditto

  • Anyone have their sim card sent out yet?

  • -1

Clicked through and they said the subtotal was $60. Anyone else?

    • Yep this is right. The rep i chatted to specifically told me to expect this and the $20 credit would be applied next/first bill.

  • +5

Love to be stuck on a contract right now… NOTTTTTTT! :D

With some basic finance smarts, and prepaid/postpaid deals like this, you're always winning!

  • +1

just curious, but after i changed my plans to 10gb at lunchtime, my reception going home has been patchy and dropping to 0 bars.

could this just be a coincidence, bad weather related or overloaded optus towers, or have optus done the dodgy and put us all on a lower tier of priority with the 10gb plan offerings….

    any chance of that?!

    • Optus is notorious for their black spots in network coverage. Not suitable for me based on where I use my mobile.

  • Im an existing Virgin customer and I ugraded my account and received an email confirmation for this plan with 10GB of data plus a month off at 50%.

    It wasn't without effort though.

I used chat and although I said I was a long time existing customer I was initially offered only 8GB and was told the extra 2GB was for customers switching from other networks.

It was only when I stated that I wanted 10GB of data and that there were various reports of existing customers receiving this online, that I got the "I'll have to ask my manager and see what I can do" spiel.

Anyway the rep came back and said they could do the 10GB.

I also asked for email confirmation of the plan change which I received.

It's been a few hours since then and my new plan details haven't updated so I guess I'll have to see what tomorrow brings but seeing I got an email confirmation I'm not too fussed.

    • +2

Thats odd the account is not updated yet. Mine was updated even before closing down the chat window.it was pretty much instant

      • I've got the chat transcript plus the confirmation email so I'll give them a call in the morning if its not sorted.

      • +2

ditto, mine was done within minutes. my app shows 10gb.

      • Same here. The checked before telling the rep bye bye definitely instant.

    • i had the same issue with customer service came back with 8gb but managed to haggle for 10gb.
      didn't ask for email though.

plan is updated just right after they had the approval from the customer.

check your Virginmobile app, otherwise u may have to contact them again

  • +1

Does anyone know if Virgin allow tethering of data to a laptop?

    • +2

Yep no problem, in my experience.

    • +1

      Yes

  • Is it unlimited calls to any mobile or only virgin mobile numbers?

I ask because of the wording of:

"Unlimited mobile calls & text Virgin to Virgin within Oz"

Isn't "text virgin to virgin" just a normal sms?

    • It also says in "critical information summary":

To Virgin Mobile and to other networks
Standard national voice and video call rate Unlimited within Oz
Standard national text (per 160 characters) Unlimited within Oz
      National MMS Unlimited within Oz

  • Just confirming my wife went from a really old (4+ years) Virgin $39 plan to this and got the full 10GB by doing online chat at 4:45pm tonight.

  • Do we request to port after we get the sim card?

    • +1

Yes - you can either request the port when you activate the sim or anytime after by logging in to the website or requesting through live chat etc.

Once activated, the sim will work with a temporary new number while you wait.

  • Why does it say in the shopping cart: Min total cost for the above item only is $1440?

    • Yes, I get this as well, even though I select the $60, now $40 plan.

      • Helpdesk told me this:

Even if you see it as $60 on the website, the $20 discount will apply automatically on your bills with us. So you can still proceed with placing the order. If you want, once you're done ordering, you can give the order number to me and I can make sure that the promo is applied. :)

  • Confirming I jumped from Amaysim to Virgin and got the 50% off and 10gb through Chat, spoke to Beth

  • +1

Guys/girls, I just succeeded in jumping from Vaya (optus) DIRECTLY to Virgin without porting out before.
Just had a chat with the service rep and then bam! :)

    • +1

Same, I got them to give me the 10GB and the 50% from Vaya to Virgin. Now to wait for the SIM card. Talked to Ryan.

    • Same here. Amaysim to Virgin. 10gb and half price first month. Chatted with Ann

  • +1

    Hey guys…

Amaysim customer who got the 10gb + 50% off.

However I just got this little pearler!

Me: so to get the 10gb, I still do the guvera trick?
Jay: Nope you don't have too. 10Gb wil automatically be given to you. Use Guvera to get 1GB more to make it 11GB :) No worries about the questions im happy to answer them for you :)
Me: as in, I could make it 12gb with presto?! haha
Jay: Yeah. Good luck using it all! HA ha :D

  • how is this compare to the recent Boost/telstra/Voda offerings?

    • boost was 11gb, but only through extra weekend data from memory.

      • +1

cool so sounds like this is the best deal available now! :)
Except I remember in the telstra one someone mentioned you can use the credit for Google apps etc….

  • When I saw a deal with Optus like this 12 months ago, I rang Vodaphone and they matched it.

I'm on an 8GB plan atm, $50 a month. I'm on no contract as such, so I wonder if I can ring and they'll match this? $40 for 10GB? They seem pretty good once you request to speak to someone in Australia at head office.

  • Im transfering from TPG (should not technically get bonus) and they were happy to do 10G and the 50% off second month, all over the phone. Took about 10 mins.

They send a sim, you should register as soon as it arrives but its OK if it arrives after the 11th, you still get the deal (but don't take longer than a week or two otherwise youre kinda taking the Mickey and may not get all that was agreed upon).

So far I'm really happy with the level of customer support and willingness to match deals and make customers feel valued. Others on Virgin wanting to match this should have a positive outcome once you get someone on the phone.

  • Can I put the sim in a mobile broadband device ?

  • +1

I had no problem getting 10GB as an existing Virgin customer

  • I'm an existing VM customer and have a few months left on my contract. I tried the service chat yesterday, they would let me pay out and after some trouble, offered only 8gb and said that the bonus 2gb was only for new users. I did try to negotiate and also mentioned that other existing customers managed to get the full 10gb and she wouldn't budge. Today, I called up and the rep organised a cancellation of my current plan, gave me the full 10gb and a bonus 2gb, so I have 12gb in total. I was impressed, checked my app and immediately saw the changes. However, when I log-in to my account on the website it shows my plan is a $40 SIM 9gb, so not sure what's the go.

    • 9gb, its probably a 9gb + 3gb bonus.

i think ppl who got the 10gb it actually says 7gb plan (+ 3gb bonnus).

      others can validate.

      kudo's if u got 12gb / month for $40…. that's a first here! :)

      • My billing cycle has just reset, can confirm I have the full 12gb yay! Noticed that I have only $200 included calls not $300.. But I don't really make that many calls so am still a happy camper to upgrade from the measly 2.3gb I was going over monthly

  • If your household already has Optus as a broadband/home phone provider, you can get $10 discount on their $50 plan, which brings it down to $40. The household account doesn't have to be your name, I signed up and they applied the discount for me with my own account etc. Perks with Optus > Virgin.. Plus data sharing if you need, which Virgin doesn't allow.

  • $53 per GB (approx) excess data YIKES

    don't go over your 10GB allowance…

    • can buy data blocks for a minimum of 2 months at a time.

if you buy after youve run out of data, you only get charged for excess on what was used before you paid for the data block

  • Any idea if Telstra Freedom Plus prepaid can match this plan. I was planning to move from VM to Telstra. But this plan looks much better!

    • Tried to match with Telstra and was happy to sign a 12 month contract, but they still didn't budge, so don't hold your breath for pre-paid. According to them they are selling a "better network"

  • Just out of interest how many people switched over from Telstra and how many years were you with Telstra for?

  • +1

For those porting from an Optus Network and don't want to do the $2 sim work-around posted earlier, I spoke to another rep this morning. He guaranteed I'd get the full 10gb even porting from another provider on the Optus network and also 50% off for the first month. All processed smoothly. Just waiting for the sim card now. Worth chatting to the rep!. Thanks OP

    P.S - I'll be porting from Vaya

    • Same and I did the same, haha, defs getting the 10 Gb and 50 % off first month.

    • What was the reps name? I want to guarantee it just in case. :)

  • Awesome deal OP! When I first saw this it was too much hassle to port out and back in. But got the 10gb via live chat (no discount - was pretty happy with the increase and didn't feel like pushing it). Initially got offered 8gb but asked nicely and got the extra 2gb in the end.

  • I'm now a Virgin again, thanks OP!

    (Confirmed offer works)

  • Anyone have their sim card sent out yet?

    • Yup, but they sent out a micro and I need a nano so had to cut it down.

      • +1

Yep, mine was sent out today too :) Hopefully the port from Vaya to Virgin is painless.
EDIT: Got it today too :)

  • +2

Looks like a great deal. Good to be able to do some international calls and text which I don't have with Boost. I confirmed by chat that the deal applies if the order is submitted and approved by 11 Feb. They said best not to wait until the last hours in case there is a glitch with order approval. Activation can take place afterwards - they even said the deal would apply if I waited until early next month to port and activate - as that is when my current boost mobile prepaid month expires.

  • +1

Thanks OP! This is why I love OzB.

I was able to get the plan despite being an existing Virgin customer. My contract expired ages ago though (the 2.2GB $29 plan). Didn't get the 50% off first month but whatever.

Everyone's comments on this post have been useful too.

  • To all those on optus network eg vodafone, how about getting a new service with virgin then port your voda number.
that way we still get the whole 10 gig?

  • +1

Confirm you can go straight from optus plan to this plan and get all the benefits and port your number!
Just speak to the online chat

  • FYI, I'm on Amaysim (uses Optus network) and I told the customer rep that I'd like to take advantage of the bonus 2GB for porting from another network but that I'd have to port it to Telstra and then onto Virgin, and since it'd take more than one day to do it, I wouldn't be able to sign up for the offer.

They offered to give me the 2GB anyway.

Also, the customer rep I spoke to confirmed that I just have to sign up for the offer before the end of 11/02/2016 to be eligible for this deal. I don't need to have activated the sim card before then.

    • Just tried that.
      Denied.

Also currently with amaysim, no budge in the extra 2gb…….

      • Did you go through the online chat?

        • +1

          Yep.
And trying again now…..looks like the new person is giving it.

          Standing by

        • +1

          Done.

They sound pretty excited…… Virtual powerhug POWERHUG for joining the virgin family

          Ha ha ha

  • I am currently with Vodafone on their $45 for 9gb of data with unlimited calls and 300 mins of overseas calls to any country. This deal is $5 per month cheaper…hmm decisions decisions….
