How much do they normally cost?

    • +16

A nice night out followed by a movie.

      • $300? :(

        • +1

          You tightarse!

        • +6

@tomsco: No, I'm edfoo, not Tightarse.

  • Why not getting this from ebay?

Cheaper with 1.25% Cashrewards (if it works) but you have ebay and paypal protection??

    • +1

Knowing you're not getting a fake would be one reason.

      • you always can get your money back if you are getting the fake on from ebay, just have it return for refund.

I am not sure about OP's website as they are not Australia Company, warranty wise is hard to tell.

        • You can buy using paypal at everbuying.net and ask for refund
Everbuying is same as gearbest and it has reputation of selling original one. Check dashcamtalk.com

        • +6

          @ozlab:

Gearbest: This store is currently BANNED on OzBargain.

Therefore I dont think the reputation are good.

        • @LoveBargain15: I have used both sellers several times.
As far as dealing with them after receipt of goods goes, GB can be worked with, EB always tried to stiff me on refunds when they shipped rubbish that didn't perform how they advertise it will.
I recently received a full refund from GB when a device didn't behave and I didn't need to return it.
Try that with EB and let me know how it goes!!!

        • +3

          @rayski57:
"and I didn't need to return it."

You can only return a gearbest item if you ever receive it in the first place.

        • @LoveBargain15: Not sure why few user put the deal quickly on main page and keep saying good things about the sellers despite they are banned.
Is dashcamtalk an authority to claim they sell genuine or gearbest are very genuine?

        • @Gaggy:

I would say it is more risk than getting a bargain here.

You just getting time wasted to deal with them if you fork money.Personally I would not buy through I need one.

        • @LoveBargain15: True. But despite banned, deals are surprisingly getting more positives.

        • @LoveBargain15:
Can we, as OzBargain users, find out WHY they were banned? If it was for something like advertising knives that are illegal to import into Australia, that's not as bad as other reasons.

        • +1

          @Russ:

          Here is your explanation

After lots of complaint about item not received , customer service, warranty issues, Mod decide everyone should had enough.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/gearbest.com

This store is currently BANNED on OzBargain.
Reason: Continual Issues with orders not being sent/received Expiry: permanent

        • @Gaggy:

Let see after month or two for the people who up voted and purchased come back and share their experience.

I am not opposing people to buy , I just say that in my opinion this seller is not trusted by myself hence I would avoid it.

        • @LoveBargain15: I was not buying, I was warning others as well and surprised. Few Users might be linked to the company as I see a love towards each of company's deal or them posting it.

        • +1

@mr_alligator: 'You can only return a gearbest item if you ever receive it in the first place.'
My experience with goods being received from GB has been 100%, EB around 40% and what was delivered by EB was far below expectation.
I don't think MOST of these types of sellers from China/HK show great honesty to their customers. I have never had an issue with TomTop, but they would be in the minority.
The point I was making is that at least when I have had to get some help after buying, GB didn't try and shaft me like EB have in the past.
One of EB's tricks (when PP claims window was 45 days) was to get you to wait a few more weeks for the goods to arrive (knowing that it would be outside the PP claim window) and then try to give you a part credit as the goods hadn't arrived (maybe not shipped). They tried this with me 3 times (they got me the first time) and that's when I stopped dealing with them for good.

        • @LoveBargain15: Oh hey, I never saw that post or realised they were banned. I actually bought those from that deal, took 5 months and multiple contacts to GB to get them.
Good to know they were banned from it.

        • I guess I'm not only lucky, but must've hit the jackpot… as I've now purchased 2 dashcams from GB and had them delivered within 3-4 weeks. Including the first one, last December, right before Xmas!

  • Thanks! Just bought one.

  • How do you mount the a118c without the suction cup?

    • If you look at the photos you can see the 3M double-sided tape (RED-label) that is used to mount it.

      • The way that it is mounted makes it a lot more discrete compared to cameras hanging down from a suction cup mount.

    • Without suction cup, it becomes not so obvious from outside. Looks like built in. So this is much better dash cam.

  • Is there any 3rd party suction cup for A118 available on the market? eBay ?

    • The camera head can swivel up/down and the camera can be detached from the mounting plate. A suction cup mount is superfluous.

      • True. For the sake of portability, just thinking I might use the unit on a different car occasionally …

        • Velcro?

        • @amts: The issue you can face with dashcams is the inherent vibrations in a car affecting video quality.
Using a mount like a suction cup or one that extends from the windscreen increases this effect.
I imagine using Velcro would be even worse I dare say.
If you need to swap it between cars, then for a few bucks you can buy a spare mount that can be affixed to another car.

        • @rayski57: Velcro applied over a wide area is pretty good.

        • @amts: Due to the Velcro being plastic hooks attaching to fabric fibres, there's no solid position to hold. You therefore have the problem of it allowing whatever is attached to vibrate freely, hence the issue I raised about it.

        • @rayski57: Velcro, when applied to a wide enough area, will have no problems holding a device as light as this steady.

        • @amts: I used bluTack to stick the cam onto the windscreen. For better looking, you can use Black color BluTack.

        • @hotpotato: Nice! How does it handle heat?

        • @amts: I have had it for a few weeks with the bluTack and my car was always park outside, so far there is no problem. However, the temperature was not too hot in the last few weeks. In mid-January I took it with me to Gold Coast and used it on a rental car for 4 days, and it held up pretty well. Just wrap the cable around the mirror handle so it won't fall down even if the blutack melts.

    • +1

The Street Guardian has completely reworked internals. Upgraded glass lens, upgraded Sony sensor, upgraded chipset. They just re-used the housing because it has the most discreet design for a dash cam. One of the best on the market if you drive a lot and can afford it.

This one (A118C) is built down to a cost.

  • just bought 2. Thanks.

  • Does it need a mini sd card?

    • It needs a Micro SD card

  • Support high capacity TF cards (up to 32G)

Does it mean I cannot use a 64GB card with this camera?

    • Not sure about this but i have xiaomi yi which they say its only support up to 64gb and im using it with 200gb sd card with no issue.

      • SDXC spec is from 32GB to 2TB. They probably just tested to 64GB.

SDHC ends at 32GB, so this might not support higher.

    • +3

You can use a 64GB card. When you first put it in you'll get a card error message but that's easily rectified by formatting the memory card within the camera.

  • +1

Wouldn't mind a A119 though, better night quality.

    • Is there word on a release date?

        • Thanks for that. It's interesting, I went to the Gearbest site and when I scroll down the price appears at the top.
US$140.41 for the non GPS model.
          US$161.39 for the GPS model.

I'll be keeping an eye on it for the future, in the mean time I'll see how this A118C performs when it arrives!

        • +2

          @unco:

The A118C comes with a GPS model too

And apparently GPS module can be bought separately.

Anyone know if purchasing the GPS module can add GPS functionality to the OPs linked non GPS model?

        • @Jackal: Interested in this too..

        • @Jackal:

I'm gonna hazard a guess and say yes. Looking at the one you linked, the GPS logger plugs into AV IN, so I assume it's just sending a video signal to the camera with the coordinates to overlay the image.

Of course, confirmation would be nice.

        • @Cheap Charlie:

Nice one. Just under $12 is the cheapest GPS Module on eBay

So, adding that to OPs dash cam, just under $80 for a GPS enabled dash. Winning.

        • @TheContact:

          FYI, a pretty decent review.

Seems GPS is embedded into video and needs PC freeware to see. Reviewer commented that there is no way of actually displaying GPS info/speed as an overlay however, so take note if that's important to you.

        • +1

@Jackal: It doesn't automatically display the gps data overtop of the video, but you can use the software to create a version of the video that does. (It's also is useful for joining all the 3 min video segments together.)

I personally prefer it this way because say you're traveling a bit quick when an accident occurs, you still have a video of the incident without (further) incriminating yourself.

I bought two of these a couple weeks ago from GearBest and shall be installing them in my car today :)

        • @Jackal: The one you linked is a non-capacitor model.

The capacitor model with GPS is here and quite a bit more expensive than EB: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/A118C-B40-Capacitor-Version-Novat…

    • Wow! That's so much improvement. Looking forward for the release date and hopefully price is not so much different from 118.

  • +1

Cheers just got the goggles. Note that this discount only applies to the transparent ones.

    • +1

Thanks just got confirmation from rep that Code is Modified and can be used on all 5 colours.

      • Bugger. Not when I tried to order the yellow ones earlier……
        Reluctantly took the transparent

  • Bought 2 thanks rep.

  • +2

Although this is using capacitor. It actually comes with RTC battery to keep the clock and setting when not being used for a long time.

    • Are you associated with the seller as no one asked about the question about the RTC battery? I happen to see few people backing this seller despite they were banned earlier from here.
Normally there is a outcry here when people find out the sellers have changed name when they are banned. Not in this case for some reason.

  • +1

When you create an account with EB you get 100 EB points. The points can be used to further reduce the price by US$2.

If you order from mobile site that's 2% extra discount + 4.8% cash back from Cadhrewards.

    • +1

Is it possible to pay with paypal and redeem the 100 EB points? Can't see an option for this..
EDIT: oops found it, just dont click the first paypal option that comes up and continue through check-out

  • +1

Do you have to run it off power or is the battery sufficient to be charged occasionally? If it can't run for very long on the battery, how do you run power to it?

Is the mount movable to another vehicle easily or is it difficult?

    • +1

It has no battery, you plug it into your cigarette lighter for power. It'll turn on/off with your car, the capacitor is there so that it has enough juice to finish writing the final video file before turning off.

The mount is attached via adhesive tape, so it's not considered easily movable. As someone else mentioned you could buy another mount for your other car and do it that way, or perhaps use blutack or something instead of the supplied tape.

  • Can a novice install this properly (i.e. with no hanging or visible wires)? Would appreciate a video guide just to see how hard/easy to set up.

    • It's plug and play dude

    • This would largely come down to your car and how hard it is to access the panels and roof lining.
Once you've got the cable tucked away nicely its just a matter of plugging it into your cigarette socket.

Everbuying is starting to become my go to website for Chinese stuff. Bought 3 dashcams from previous deals and received them with no problems.

    Can't decide between A118C and G1W-C. Help!

    • +3

Get both, one for front and another for rear to catch hit and run from behind.
g1w-cb: 120 angle, no battery for clock/setting, with suction cup
a118c: 170 angle, battery for clock/setting, no suction cup but very discreet from outside

    • +2

I have both, the picture quality if pretty comparable but A118C is a lot more discrete in the way that it is mounted on the windscreen.

      • +3

Is there much of a difference in night mode?

    • Crikey I ended up buying both. Will test which one I prefer and pawn off the other one as a Xmas pressy!

  • How does this compare to something like the BlackVue DR650? (Link: http://dashcamsaustralia.com.au/shop/dashcams/blackvue/black…)

My mate recommended me to get that one but the price is a bit off putting..

  • Bought one.. Thanks OP!!

  • Jesus Christ bloody PayPal WTF. I paid with a USD Denominated card, and PayPal transferred the USD into AUD which my card paid for with USD converted to AUD (at a horrible rate). Ended up paying AUD $76 for this bloody hell.

basically USD to AUD to USD. Can you imagine… Bargain hunter's NIGHTMARE

  • What is the tail piece for?

  • Bought the dash cam. Wanted to get another G1W
Thought I'd try this one at this time

  • bought one. hope it will be delivered within 2 weeks..

  • +1

How long does the battery last on these dash cams ? Always wanted to get one, but don't want to void manufacturers warranty for hardwiring power supply to it. Are there any dash cams which work on batteries (rechargeable, hopefully) alone ?

    • +1

With dash cams you actually want to avoid batteries because the interior can get really hot when the car is parked under the sun. Hence "capacitor" is a feature, it is not used to power the camera, but to save the footage when the camera loses power.

      • So is hotwiring dashcams the only way ?
