1280
CUT20

11:40 Update: $1 price drop. Now down to $999.20. Thanks to unity1

Hi guys, thought this was a great price for a 13" Macbook Air with 8gb of ram and a 128gb SSD.

I have had both the 11" and 13" Macbook Air and found the size of the 13" to be optimal.

The 8gb of ram will make it fly for the next few years too :)

Don't forget Cashback from your favourite provider :)

    import tax?

    • +6

Found this in a previous deal regarding a phone over $1000 which came under $1000 after discount.

Me : What is listed as the final price in your invoice ? Is it the price before the discount or with it ?
Kogan : The discounted price will appear on the invoice, along with the original price. It will be indicated as discounted, so you will know the difference.

Me: Do I have to pay additional taxes/duty for this item since its original price is over $1000 ?
Kogan: Well, if it's over $1000, you will have to. However if you're applying the discount and it may go below $1000 there won't be any GST to pay. You'll be issued a Commercial invoice as opposed to a tax invoice.

Me: The reason why I’m asking is because I have previously bought products from other retailers with similar type of eBay promotions but they always list the original price before the discount in their invoices (and most of the time no mention of the discount). So I just want to make sure that you list the discount and the final price after the discount in your invoice, so that I don't have to pay additional tax at customs.
Kogan: Of course, I have confirmed this information. The invoice will list both the discount price and the original amount. It's okay, usually if it's below $1000 you won't have to pay any extra amount.

      • 1 cent under. Scrape of the chin lol.

  • +4

that is a great price, if its $999 straight to your door.

    • Yes it will be, Kogan will put on the invoice the discounted amount which is under $1000.

  • anyone can comment this vs ASUS zenbook or Lenovo for the same spec? I never owned an apple product since 1990s, except kids have ipads

    • +2

Comparing to ThinkPad 13, ThinkPad has better/newer CPU (i5 Skylake), higher resolution screen (1080P), more storage (256GB). MacBook Air however is slightly lighter, has longer battery life and possibly better screen (brighter, better colour).

      • +11

        And OS X.

I used to be a spec whore, now I just buy what Apple tells me to.

        • +6

I used to look up terms like "Think Different" and now I just do whatever Siri tells me…

        • +2

          bahhhh

        • :(

    • if you're looking at the same spec the build on the Apple will be better owing to the fact that Apple only refresh laptop designs every 5 years or so selling huge quantities of each allowing for basically unmatched r&d. Usually you will get much better spec for the same money with a windows laptop, but if it's the same spec go with the apple machine

I have this macbook and my wife as the zenbook. For the same price she has an i7 vs my i5. double the SSD and dedicated graphics card. I have actually grown to really like MacOS but windows 10 really isnt that bad.

      • +1

If you had to choose, wouldn't you go with the i7, double the SSD and better GPU?

    • Depends on which Zenbook. UX303 compares half way between a Macbook Air and Macbook Pro in size, but with better specs and a discrete Graphics card for cheaper price. The UX305 compares about half way between the Macbook 12" and Macbook Air in size and thinness but with arguably better specs for cheaper. Zenbooks are upgradable at least in the SSD, but the UX303 can also go up to 12GB of RAM.

    • i have macbook air 13" leaves my windows laptops for dead in term of battery life, heat, etc. and apple just upgrade the OS for free ….. none of this key activation crap.

I still have a windows laptop ($550 acer I5) but only for office 20143 and visio …. everything else I don the macbook air …..

  • +1

Are the SSD's in these user replaceable? 128GB probably won't go too far. Otherwise it's a great deal.

  • +1

Beware of the information above, the ATO information specifically mentioned that Import Taxes, GST, etc will still be charged if an item is discounted to below $1000. I can't find the link, but I've recently read it.

    • +1

Agreed. I'd want confirmation from ATO about this issue rather than Kogan. Kogan just want the sale.

Everything I see says it's when the 'value' is more than $1,000. To me, the 'value' is what you pay, not what the advertised price is, but I'm an economist, not a lawyer.

  • is this one has retina display

    • +1

      no

    • +3

      No unfortunately, only a 1440 x 900 display.

      • but good enough for a 13" display.

        • Yeah I think it's reasonable and has incredible battery life as a result. There's a tradeoff either way :)

  • Very good price… do it or not? :o

  • This is actually a really good deal for 13" Macbook Air. Had I not needed to get a windows ultrabook I would have jumped onto this one.

  • Showing up as $1000

    • +1

Yes, I see what you mean. It rounds up to $1000 in Paypal checkout. Have just contacted them directly and will try to get this resolved. Cheers :)

      • or maybe purchase directly from DS and avoid any ebay fees which is a win win.

        • They don't have any 13" 128gb models listed on either DS or Kogan websites. Only the 256gb which is $1650..

      • +1

Maybe there is no need to worry, the official customs website reads 'at or below $1,000'.
        https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/GST/In-detail/Rules-for-spec…

        • +4

That's true, well I still contacted them anyway :) Don't want Ozbargainers being burdened with a import levy..

    • +3

They just changed the "Buy It Now" from $1249.99 to $1248.99. The price on check out with the CUT20 discount code is now $999.20 for me. Hope this helps. I've just bought one for myself. Thanks OP!

      • +1

Glad I could help, enjoy your new macbook :)

  • Maybe when they put retina in the MBA

  • My Mid 2011 specced out MBA11 is still going strong. It'll be due for a new battery soon though.

    • My sons is a 2012. Battery has been replaced.
Keyboard was replaced start of last year, Right hand shift key stopped working this year, as well as audio jack now not working.
I just need it to last till end of year when school stops.

    • same here mine is I5 with 4GB ram and 128GB storage, but yeah, battery is running dry earlier than it used to.

hmm new laptop or new battery when it becomes an annoyance ???

  • My 13" Macbook Air (mid 2012) is still going super strong with constant daily use, even the battery is pretty good. I'd love to buy a new one, but I can't justify it yet!

    Amazing price though.

    • +1

Same here. I've changed the battery however, it was tired after 700+ cycles.

      • How did you change the battery and what was the cost?

Also have a mid 2012 AIr, and the battery has seen better days.

        • +1

Purchased compatible battery on ebay for $60-70 and P5 screwdriver for $5. After that it's a very simlple task to remove the bottom lid, and swap the battery.

  • Best ultrabook for that price and performance you can buy, if you can bear the 128gb storage.

    • Yeah I agree, 128gb isn't ideal but there are cheap cloud storage options :)

    • If you are happy to pay for iCloud storage, then macOS's latest release has built in support for dynamically moving files off the system into the cloud and back to help conserve local space. Might help those starved for space who have access to solid internet connections.

  • +1

    $1 decrease in price

    • +8

Thanks, I asked them to reduce the price as Paypal was rounding it up to $1000. Now it comes to $999.20 :)

  • Not related but I havent seen any deal for macbook pro. Really wanna upgrade my macbook air to the pro as sometimes it get really slow

    • +2

There were a lot of rumours circulating of a larger upgrade being announced later this year, possibly around October, to the lineup. Might be worth seeing if that eventuates if you can hold out.

      • Apparently they are going to be adding a touchscreen function key strip above the keyboard.

What's the difference between the MJVE2 and MMGF2 Macbook Airs? Both are the same price. Just curious.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Apple-13-MacBook-Air-MJVE2-1-6GHz…

    • +2

I had the same question originally but I figured it out recently.

The MMGF2 model which is this deal is the 13" with 8gb of ram.
The MJVE2 model is the older 13" model with 4gb of ram. Don't buy that one!

      Hope this helps :)

      • +1

        Thanks!

      • Is the MMGF2 model the 2016 model and the MJVE2 the 2015? Not much shows up on Google in regards to the former.

        • MJVE2 is a discontinued model, probably why it's hard to find any info on it.

        • @ShamelessBargains:
Thanks for answering my questions. Bought it!

        • +2

          According to this article:

On April 19, 2016, Apple boosted the 13-Inch models with 8 GB of RAM standard, but left the 11-Inch models configured with 4 GB of RAM by default. These new 13-Inch models were assigned new order numbers, as well, MMGF2LL/A and MMGG2LL/A configured with 128 GB and 256 GB of flash storage, respectively.

        • @repattern: All good, enjoy your new mac :)

  • My MacBook from 5 years ago still going strong

  • +4

Brought the macbook air 11 inch about 2-3 years ago from Kogan, when they had it for $700. Best thing I ever did, small, light, quick! was very happy with the purchase from Kogan. I'm sure many people are fine with Kogan, but if you're a bit hesitant, well my personal experience i had no issues.

The only thing is (and to be honest everyone always says one or the other) if it stuffs up, apple won't fix it under warranty (or something along those lines) as it is an import. In saying that some people have gotten theirs fixed no issues, and others have said apple won't do it. So not sure which one it is, thankfully mine is a few years old and never had any issues. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

    • Exactly the same here~

    • I guess because all Apple computers have international warranty where iphone or ipad with cell models don't have.

  • +1

Hmm Should I buy it or wait for the rumored update in October 2016?
    http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#MacBook_Air

    • Rumoured update will have a significant price increase. I reckon you will be looking at around $1500 for a 13" upgraded air. Depends whether you need it now or whether you can wait. Was meant to be a MacBook Pro update last year but still waiting…

    • Same dilemma for me. I think there's meant to be an October update but Apple are being tight lipped.

    • Just pulled the trigger. Going to Salary Sacrifice it.
The rumors from the bloomberg article suggest the update will be a usb c port. It doesn't talk about anything else. I am not ready to move to usb c yet. None of my things have usb c.

  • Bummer, just bought this off ausluck from ebay for $300 bucks more. Oh bother, life of an ozbargainer

    • +1

      at least local stock…

  • Hi Ozbargainers I need some advice here. I am interested in switching over to the Mac Eco system. I currently have a windows laptop and an android device. would getting this Macbook for $999.20 and Iphone 7 for $982.40 from this deal be a good idea/deal. Any ideas or opinions are most welcome. Are these two devices highly compatible? I have had issues in the past with Bluetooth connectivity between my iPad and iPod.

    • Just letting you know: If you order from the link, then the expected delivery would be October 24 (from one of the comments in the post).
This deal (Macbook) is worth getting but iPhones are almost always a ripoff. Do not bother getting an iPhone 7. Other Andrid phones which are pretty damn good are much cheaper and far better.

    • For just the regular email, web and music/video user Macbook Air are better than anything I have used.
The track pad and gestures are awesome and easy to use. Battery life is the best.

I also have a Macbook pro 15" for app development but it is just too big to carry around with you (nice big retina display).

I also got a Surface Pro 4 which I thought would be a Macbook Air killer.
SP4 is a nice device but too many bugs when originally release.
Very poor battery life, advertised as 9 hours but in reality only get 5 to 6 hours (when watching mkv video file). But this is due to the 2736 x 1824 screen resolution.
Never really use it as a tablet or the touchscreen when keyboard is attached.
Can't rest on lap as comfortable as a regular laptop.

All day I use a Windows PC for work with windows 10 which is good.

But at home a Macbook air is light easy to use where ever you are. Take it on the road. And you really get all day battery life.

      • Thanks for your thoughts guys. I think MacBook air is good value but iPhone is expensive for what you get. I want a system on Mac so might get an older iPhone.

        • Get an iPhone 6s or SE. Both have the same processor and same great camera. Can pick them up significantly cheaper than the 7 and they are both great devices. Just depends on the screen size you want.

        • +1

@ShamelessBargains: thank you. I will look out for a deal on one of those phones.

    • i have both windows and android and OS X and iPads and used to have iPhone …… the mac book with an iPhone is a nicer ecosystem if you just like to use stuff instead of timker with stuff…. and apple are good with software upgrades so you will get them for a long time on both the mac and phone so you get to enjoy the advances on both devices without having to buy new hardware.

  • I know that one founder gave away his wealth while the other apparently couldn't find a cause worthy of his money. Must not have been looking too hard.

However, Apple OS is likely infinitely more reliable than Windows in any guise. Apple phones are fairly spasmodic, or at least the updates were in my experience, but they would be doing well if the functioning of their computer OS was even less consistent than Windows.

Apple also offers a slightly simpler purchasing environment which, given the overabundance of choice of manufacture and product and attendant anxiety the modern world foists upon the consumer, makes peace of mind post-purchase more attainable.

  • I assume item cannot claim TRS?

    • Yes no TRS unfortunately. Product will have a 1 year Apple warranty though.

      • 1 year Apple Australia warranty? Is there any definitive link that actually confirms this? Will be good to keep for reference should anyone need to make a warranty claim.

      • I might be better off buying locally with a 10% off sale, then collect TRS when I travel in Oct then.

        • @unity1: Its $1393.20 for the same model which will be about $1250 after TRS. Depends how much you value local warranty.

        • +1

@ShamelessBargains: You made reference in your above comment about the product coming with 1 year Apple warranty. Will that include 1 year warranty through Apple Australia?

        • @unity1: yep 1 year apple warranty. If you buy AU stock, you get 3 years under consumer law. Personally I have never had a problem with any of my macs but I guess it depends on the user :)

        • its's 12 mths for MacBooks according to apple web site and 3 years with applecare which costs extra ……

not sure where these mthyical consumer laws come from ……. there is no consumer law that says laptops get 3 year warranties …..

Phone batteries were a sticking point as they deemed reasonable use and many are non removal / user replaceable hence some phones are 2 years.

These will probably come with a travel adapter ….. apple shops sell the AU cable or you can get them on eBay ($7-$12) ….. I have several types from my travel days and dislike of using adapter.

        • @garage sale:

The ACL guarantees, including durability, are grounded in a notion of reasonability. A reasonable consumer would not expect a MBA13 to experience a major failure within the first three years assuming reasonably careful operation. If it did so, the item, given the relatively high RRP and strong reliability of Apple products generally, likely would fail a test of acceptable quality.

  • Any deals on SSD drives for the macbook air? 256 GB or 512 GB

  • Bought one, ebay said postage to Sydney is expected 10-15 Oct

  • +2

Ok so about the warranty thing, someone I know works for apple service department here in Sydney. I asked him it was okay to buy the international version of mac since it is on huge discount. He said Apple will cover it under warranty but only for 1 year. whereas if you buy the local version it is covered for three years. Even though it is a good bargain I think I will pass.

    • +2

If you've got a credit card that has warranty extension for purchases, you could have a longer warranty. I bought the Macbook Air from this deal earlier today using my Amex Platinum Edge card. Has got Buyers Advantage which gives a complimentary extended 1 year from the end date of Apple's 1 year warranty. So 2 years warranty in total.
