Free Windows 10 for Students

1630

Not sure if this is widely known but sorry if it is, but most schools provide Windows 10 EDU for free and some also include Office Professional 2016 or even Win 10 Home/Professional. So it's worth checking out if your school is eligible.

If your school isn't there, you might be able to let your IT team/help desk know and they can request one here: http://kivuto.com/windows-10-student-use-benefit/.
I don't believe there's a cost to the school or students to set a store up.

it gets a run every year on ozb: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/onthehub.com
    but handy reminder for some.

    • might have to hassle my sounds school for an email account so he can tap into it ….. he's in year 4 but an .edu acccount seems to be trick .

  • What happens to the license when you finish your studies?

Edit: Also what does EDU license not have compared to the retail ones?

    • +3

      From the link:
Windows 10 Education, offered as an upgrade license, is permitted for use during school and beyond graduation on personal computers.

      • Not entirely true. You can clean install Windows 10 Education. Another way is, you can upgrade from Windows 10 Home/Pro into Education ver. and then do a Windows Reset and choose to erase all the files.

        • I am confused, is it an upgrade license or a new license?

        • +3

@luka: Windows 10 from OnTheHub or Uni Dreamspark premium account is definitely both new or upgrade license. You can fresh clean install Windows 10 with no problem. I fresh installed my Windows 10 Edu via bootcamp with Macbook Pro just fine. If you have Windows 7 or 8, you can also upgrade using this Windows 10 Edu license just fine.

        • @squall3031:
          Thank you!!!

        • @squall3031:

"Windows 10 Education, offered as an upgrade license, is permitted for use during school and beyond graduation on personal computers."

That was taken from the bargain posted by the OP. It cannot be used for new/clean installs.

        • +3

          @DataOneNetworks:
Upgrade licenses have always been able to do clean installs.

As for the difference, the Education edition is most similar to the Enterprise version, which has more features than the consumer Home and Pro editions. But then again, if you have to ask, the additional features (mostly to make the device more manageable) are probably not relevant.

    • +4

I'm using the EDU license right now. It has more features than Home or Pro. It's like the Enterprise edition. Those additional feature are mainly network related. But a feature thats missing is Cortana. But it really depends on how you see it. I disable cortana anyway so doesn't really matter.

      • +15

In other words it's a vastly superior version. More core features, less spyware.

      • +1

Windows 10 Edu does have Cortana since the Creator's update

    • -2

depends if you get a job when you finish studies or are on centrelink.

      • What does that matter?
The description specifically says it's usable after graduation.

  • Any way for non-students to get windows 10? Excluding the accessible option which doesn't work on my laptop…

    • Buying it? Onthehub licences are paid for through student fees…

    • +3

      Install pirate windows 7
Upgrade to windows 10 using free assistive technologies upgrade.
Real windows 10 digital licence obtained.

      • +6

That is a seriously poor choice of words but he means this. The accessibility upgrade offer.

        https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/accessibility/windows10upgra…

Edit: Nevermind - he changed his post.

      • Does this seriously work? Microsoft allowing pirated users to upgrade to a fully licensed/activated version? I thought it only allowed it to happen but never actually activated (eg. it doesn't allow you to change the personalization options, etc). If it does work then that is pretty silly of Microsoft!

        • +1

I don't think Microsoft care that much - they could easily lock all this activation stuff down much more than they do, but they never bother. They just make it faux-difficult to obtain an activated copy.

People who pirate Windows are unlikely to buy it anyway, so it's better to have them using your current software than not, or have them move to Linux or something instead.

The real money is in the volume licensing anyway (even that is weird - we have license keys at work through a MS partner subscription and one of the Win10 licenses is just "multi-activation" - it works on everything)

        • @hcca:

Thanks for the explanation. I was interested in knowing whether that actually worked but I guess nobody is going to admit they used a pirated version of Windows themselves and then upgraded!

As somebody who installs genuine OEM versions of Windows for my clients I haven't come across a situation myself first-hand but it is interesting if it is true…people that know would think to themselves "why not just install a pirated copy of Windows 7 and then upgrade for free to a genuine version of 10?".

I do fully agree that Microsoft makes a lot more money on their other products/services than Windows anyway so I guess they don't really care that much (though it isn't that hard for them, really, to stop it happening).

        • Actually - I did that exact same procedure last week. Reformatted my PC and installed pirated Windows 7, downloaded the Windows 10 upgrader tool and it said I wasn't actually able to download the update because my copy was non-genuine. I downloaded a Windows 7 crack, ran that and then had a genuine W7 copy. Proceeded to download the W10 update and upgraded with no issues.

Yes, do the UTas fitbit course…

Engineering school of the University of Melbourne always offers dream spark premium account for students. Free windows, free Visio studio etc. But most students don't know about that.

    • Same with UWA engineering and computer science.

    • +1

After a bit of searching I found that I had access to dreamspark premium too.

Deakin MBA student, non IT related course

    • Same goes for many unis, just google your uni name + dreamspark/onthehub

  • If you have had a licensed windows installation on your computer at any point in time, then Windows 10 can be installed as an upgrade. Hope this helps.

  • Can confirm that Box Hill TAFE has a thing on this site.

Can also confirm that emails ending with @student.bhtafe.edu.au aren't eligible despite the first line.

Either way, I only use my Chromebook and was just out to get everything I can out of the 600 odd I spent on their equipment fee, since they think giving me one (profanity) shirt for 8 two week blocks of placement. Anyway, cool thing, cheers anyways.

    • Does Damian Cowell really teach at Box Hill TAFE?

  • Is it free for life or until you cease being a student?

What is the cheapest way to become a student without actually doing any study?

    Do the UDUMMY courses count?

If you only need Office it's worth first checking your email account, usually if it's outlook your education provider will be paying for Office365 for you anyway - simply download it there. It's as simple as logging in and clicking 'Office365' in the top left corner.

    • Wish I knew about this years ago. Cheers for the tip.

      • +1

When you're no longer a student, you will not be able to validate your Microsoft office using your student email account anymore. But it's still better than nothing.

        • A lot of education providers are terrible at deleting all accounts though, so you might get lucky ;)

  • +1

University of Melbourne says Windows 10 education is $27.85?

    • That could be staff pricing?

    • +1

Select "The University Of Melbourne - IT - Microsoft Imagine Premium" from the department dropdown menu, not "University of Melbourne" option.

    • You should be able to get Windows 10 Pro for free, not sure what the difference is, but I always direct students and colleagues to the Pro version.

  • Deakin $21

scratch that - was staff pricing - free for students

If you have an ABN (which is free) just sign up for Bizspark. Free Windows, Office, Visual Studio….free all the things

    • No strings attached?

      • Yes. You don't justness an ABN, you need to be involved in software design and have a company url.

    • +1

A few more requirements than that:

A: In order to qualify for BizSpark an eligible Startup must:

      • Be actively engaged in development of a software-based product or service that will form a core piece of its current or intended business - this >software must be owned, not licensed, by the Startup.
      • Operate its own public website on their own domain.
      • Provide a contact email address on its own domain.
      • Be a for-profit entity. Non-profit entities should visit Microsoft Philanthropies to learn about additional technology access options.
      • Be in business for less than 5 years.
      • Have less than $1 million USD in annual revenue.
  • Last time I tried downloading a new copy of Win10 (i.e. one that didn't need to download 10^n updates after installation) it complained that I'd already purchased my limit of copies (~2 I think it was), so that was annoying.

  • I hear Korea, (North) Democratic Peoples Republic Of is a great place to live. Please select your school.

I don't think they though this through very well. But good deal for students if they want win10.

  • If your institution has microsoft dreamspark, sometimes the only version of windows 10 available is the education version, so you can install win 7 pro and upgrade with the media creation tool to 10 pro

    • +1

You don't even need to install 7 first, a install ISO for 10 should accept a 7, 8 or 8.1 key just fine even on a freshly built PC

    • +1

Microsoft Dreamspark premium account may only available to some faculties. For example, if you're doing ICT or Engineering course, often you're eligible for it. But it may not be available to those who study Business or Law course only. If there's a mixed study (Business and ICT programs in a semester for example), you may get Dreamspark account.

This really depends on the institution you go to and how they opt which students can get the account.

  • +1

ANU has dreamspark as well!… if anybody goes to ANU :)

  • +1

Does anyone know if this applies to homeschooled kids?

    • Doubt it. I looked into it a few years ago and I hit a dead end. I was working at a company that was part of the HUP program so didn't waste too much time chasing it up.

You really need to be part of an institution with an edu.au domain which is impossible to get for homeschoolers.

      • That's disappointing but thanks for the info.

  • With all the stuffing around with deals, emails and accounts needed ,
would not migrating to Linux for Study/School/tafe/Uni ,
just work out better for the long term ?

Ive been using GalliumOS on my Toshiba Chromebook 2 CB35 2014
which is a great little chromebook for simple stuff , surfing,
emails , typing, etc Infact its even managed to edit 1080p footage
while over in Japan which goes to show how vesitle it is

I really don't recommend locking yourself into ChromeOS or Windows 10 S

    • nobody in the corporate world uses linux or chrome it's windows, office, power bi etc.

if you are into engineering or software devopemnt it's different .

    • I always dual boot with Linux or I have hassles with certain programs. Setting up a USB DVT on a linux is virtually impossible. Open Office is good enough for me. Don't need genuine Office anymore. For most things can get away without MS but not everything.

  • "Your order has been placed and a confirmation email will be sent to you shortly."

There is another legit way to get free Windows 10 as well besides this.

  • -2

    MacOS is free. Every year.

    • +1

MacOS is subsidised into the cost of the hardware.* Every year.
Now you know why there's a ~$200 premium on Apple laptops vs. Windows Counterparts!

      • +2

Most Mac OS will be able to upgrade to the next version for at least for 6-7 years.

        • Just like Windows? I manage 1400 MacOS devices, 100 iPads, and 2100 Windows devices across two schools.
We run Windows 10 on laptops that come with "Windows Vista Basic Compatible" stickers on them - 10 years old.

It all comes down to how good the tech/user is at maintaining a device, and Windows 10 runs faster than Vista or 7.

DISCLAIMER: I DON'T ENDORSE THIS BEHAVIOUR. THROW OUT EVERY DEVICE AFTER 3 YEARS. CHANGE IS GOOD. PERFORMANCE GAINS ARE SUBSTANTIAL.

        • @DarkRyoushii: My point was that you mentioned Every Year. Also that cost differential is declining..
Also, when are you just going to use Chromebooks in school?

        • @techboy: When Microsoft stop providing unlimited free licensing to schools for Windows 10 Education / Office 365. Windows 10 S looks genuinely interesting to me because it would give a great argument for intune / Windows Store for Business licensing but even then, there are no cheap 10 S devices planned.

      • No, you got it all wrong. It's Windows laptops that have a premium built in - the premium is the massive depreciation when you sell!!!

    • …and once you have Windows 10 you basically get two new versions of Windows every year for free!

    • Its "free" which is BUNDLED with mac osx system and your not allowed to install it on a PROPER PC and theirs no disc as such

  • If you have an edu email address (and your school is hooked up to Office365) then you can simply go to portal.office.com then login and at the top right corner there's a button to download the full Office 365 suite.

A free Microsoft Developer (Windows Store) account for life too, if you have a .edu e-mail…

  • You can also get Windows Server 2016 free

  • Make sure you check the other software that is offered.
There are beauties like MS DOS 6 :-)

  • +1

Just to add to this, all public NSW students can receive Windows 10 edu, office 2016 and the full Adobe creative cloud site for free.

    • Guess that doesn't include Catholic primary schools then?

      • Nope, department of education.

  • -1

Is it possible to use this on bootcamp or parallel?

  • Is it possible to put in a win7 key for win10? I saw it on google, not sure if its ended or not.

    • +1

There is still a work around to get the free upgrade, but it requires you telling Microsoft you have a disability. I've never tried it myself, but a quick Google you reveal the method.
