Wait what! $116 for a pencil?

    This is surely a prank?

    • +44

It's $116 for Apple tax, the pencil is free

      • Why am I not surprised. Haha.

Also they have boosted thier prices on alot of other items. Like the Bose SoundLink mini ii was $169 a month ago now it's $249!!

        • “It’s unclear whether or not Apple will adjust the prices of iPad Pro models should the price of NAND flash storage fall back down, but it’s clear that today’s price increase is something that Apple feels is out of its control.”

Well yeah things keep going up but will it ever go down?

      • Made me chuckle. Good one

    • +11

It's more than just a stylus. The technology is great and is aimed at professionals.

      • -3

        good goyim

        • huh?

        • +1

@fredblogs: It's an anti-semitic slur against Ryanek as he's accepted the standard apple line that says the pencil is for professionals and should cost accordingly. Where it gets anti-semitic is that Jews have been perceived to rip people off and this pencil is no different in Orpheus' eyes.

Or he's just using the slur because people know what it means, but with no bad feelings towards Jews

      • +5

        professionals

        Gerry Harvey just got triggered.

      • Whats in it that makes it so expensive?

        • +11

          Apple juice

        • +1

It’s pretty snazzy to use. If you use a demo in a store it doesn’t really feel like using a “stylus”… there’s basically no lag. And I think it detects angle too so it makes marks thicker when you tilt it (kinda like the graphite on a pencil). Definitely aimed at artists and professionals and students who handwrite a lot.

I wonder what “professionals” were doing before this invention

i got a 'free stylus' as part of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Tab A2 .

Apple is just overpriced when the "same" productivity can be had, for a fraction of the price.

It's just that Android updates don't always get rolled out, through all manufacturers.

    • +4

For those of you who think it's actually a pencil, here's Microsoft's version for their tablet: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/surface/accessories/surface-…

    • +30

wait till you see the price for a sharpener

      • +2

I just got a Pad to write it on, cost like a week's earnings.

    • +2

For someone that uses one on either device for work its cheap, go buy a non budget Wacom pen and they are similar in price or more. Microsoft, Apple, Samsung and Google all make expensive pens.

    • +3

Cos it takes courage to charge that price.

    • It's pressure and tilt sensitive and very accurate. All the alternatives to it, even the third party styluses that cost even more money, don't compare to the Apple Pencil in terms of accuracy and fluidity. It's a shame they didn't sell a version with some buttons on it though.

    • +1

Not quite as bad as the $180 earbuds

    • I just checked the RRP, $145, good god

  • No!

    • +8

      Yes. Australia voted yes!

      • Don't tell jv ……..

  • +1

But note 8 pencil is free?

    • +1

But I have an iPad pro

    • +9

Great we'll all go to Samsung & ask for our free note 8 pencil😉
Included in purchase price is not free, but is nice.

    • +1

      Its more of a toothpick

    • A base Note 8 is far more expensive than a base iPad Pro, plus doesn't have angle sensing.

      • -1

Really? According to Apple their base ipad pro 10" starts at $979. Note 8 can be had for the same price.

    • -1

      Yeah but it’s Samsung, so…clunky

  • why I need extra pencil?

    • +3

      2 hands.

    • The iPad Pro doesn't actually come with one, sadly. It's a separate purchase.

  • -1

cant tell if these people are trolling or they actually think this is a pencil

    • +13

      Apple posts are troll magnets

    • +3

      It says pencil. Not stylus.

      • but the name of the product is pencil :S

    • +8

Isn't it a pencil made from apples?

    • +1

      Plausible. Xiaomi probably has pencils.

  • -2

    Ahahahahahahahahaha

  • +24

    I have a pen… I have an apple…

  • +18

Well if some one actually wants to know what these are like.

Pretty great. Battery life is very long and only takes a few minutes charging to get it back up to a charge the lasts hours and hours. You just charge it on your ipad, it looks dumb as but honestly it's a few minutes, I've never charged by any other means.

Feels good in the hand and the range of pressure detection and tilt detection are very nice. Mostly using it in Procreate and the support is extremely detailed, you can tweak it to precisely how you like it. Not sure about other apps bu the native OS support is fine, works well in Notes and just as a "finger", some times I do prefer it for normal use. It also makes using it as second display for your computer much easier, as the tip of the pencil is much more precise than your fingers for hitting those desktop UI elements.

The latency from gesture to paint is very small, you'll get used to it in about 10minutes and adjust your strokes accordingly (very minimal).

I find it to be one of the best non dedicated graphics tablet options for drawing digitally.

All in all, found it to be a solid purchase and I didn't get it 20% off.

    • +2

      This guy pencils.

    • +5

Good to see insight from an actual user.

    • I bet my pencil is bigger than yours.

    • +1

Mostly using it in Procreate …………

Hmmm ……. I use something else to procreate, and I am sure it feels a lot nicer.

    • +2

Work gave me one of these about a month ago. They paid $145.
Price aside, this is one impressive bit of kit. It took me a day or so to get all the apps and the keyboard alternatives to use it to its full extent, and I am still learning how to get the most out of it, but even if you are not an artist, who would no doubt absolutely love the Apple Pencil, for mobile forms use it is pretty good too.

I have also taken to using the Nebo app to take meeting notes just like I was using a notebook, but my handwriting is converted to text accurately 99% of the time and I can store my notes in an electronic system for easy retrieval and search.
I just wrote this using the Apple Pencil.

  • +1

    Thanks op.

Have ever been eyeing on the pencil since I bought iPad Pro on previous MYER 20% deal.

  • +5

    Apple Pencil $116

LOL. How much is the Apple Sharpener for this pencil?

      • +3

The pencil is one thing but, anyone who buys that really is a (some less accurate but more children friendly word, certainly not one starting with w, ending in r and rhyming with franker).

        • It looks like Apple giving you the 'bird'

        • +1

It's a new level. It's not even a charger or anything, just a block with a hole in it.

      • Wow, doesn't even charge it. :(

      • Wow that's hilarious haha. To think it actually cost $45 and is being advertised on Apple's official website.. Are you kidding me!?

      • LOL Geez Louise.. $45 for a pencil stand

  • +1

Well that takes care of the apple and the pencil. How many arms and legsmuch is the pineapple?

    • +1

Ha, I get that… No wait, that friend, was a pen…

  • +7

Apple… parting fools and their money since 2007.

    • More like since 1977

      • People have been buying apples since my Granny Smith.

      • Eh, Apple wasn't overly 'fashionable' before then and actually made some products where function was favoured over form.

  • -2

True waste of money, I guess this is great for the guys with the extra cash.

  • The materials cost for this must be like $5 or something. I don't understand why this is so expensive. Even the margin's on the Iphones are only approx $700 (RRP $1000)

    • +2

It's got a processor, radio and movement sensors. It's far beyond a basic stylus.
These things still cost $80 from PC brands.

  • ITT: People that think professional artists draw on a tablet with their fingers.

    • +2

ITT: People think a stylus shouldn't cost $116 on special with an RRP of $145.

  • +3

I have a pen, i have an apple
    Uh
    Im broke

    • +1

      very good!

  • +3

I guess if you can afford and justify its use, it's actually pretty good.
I have one… and have not used it. Sigh.

  • +2

I wish it wasn't so friggen overpriced, but I have one and it's great. If you have an ipad pro it's definitely worth buying one IMO.

  • -1

DAE see that pen apple pineapple viral YouTube? This deal reminds me so much of that! So funny XD

  • Being the cheapo I am I prefer to buy second hand Apple pencil from CEX or something for $80 and have 2 years warranty included.

    • CEX? In Oz? Is that a thing?

      • Yes they have stores in shopping centres.
Give reasonabke prices for the convinience and they don't even care about the cables and charger for phones, better than scummy pawn shops and dealing with Gumtree and Facebook market idiots.

        • I haven't enountered them in Aus - they're everywhere in the UK. Seems they're not in Melbourne, unfortunately!

  • +1

This plus iPad Pro just makes everything else seem clunky

  • Bargain…said no one ever.

    • Bargaisn't.

  • ****just here for the comments****

  • A pencil for $116 and its cheapest ever, appled

    • 118 sold today

  • Hey all,
Do you think officeworks will do their price beat thing for this?

    • No, they won’t as it involves ebay coupon discount..

    • JB Hi-Fi was willing to match the price The Good Guys eBay store back when they had their 20% off coupon going. I went on my phone, added it to the cart, applied the coupon, indicated in-store pick up, showed the guy and was like "I can go get this from The Good Guys right now for this price, but I think they're assholes and would rather buy from you guys, can you match their price?", he laughed, checked my phone and matched it.

      • Well jb owns good guys so…

  • Wait for the Ultimate stationary bundle from Apple. That will include a genuine Apple pencil case. Factories in China are working day and night to produce compatible pencil case ready for Christmas.

  • xiaomi version is way cheaper
