I think iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are in the sweet spot for bang for buck at the moment, but if price doesn't concern you, then this is a good price!

    • +45

but if price doesn't concern you

then you wouldn't be reading these forums…

      • +6

Touche. Should have rephrased to "if you want the latest"

      • +7

Rich don’t care about price, but they care very much about (perceived) value.

        • +2

This is what I tried explaining to another bloke on here but he didn’t get it

    • +3

Just trying to be informative, I got my gf an iphone 7 plus 128gb last year, everything worked fine until last week when she upgraded to ios 11. Basically the battery runs funny since then and she loses twice as much power on the same type of use. Of course I heard about the programated obsolescence with the different law suits apple has at the moment but for a last year model, that's bad.

Anyway, my point is if you get a 7 and can refrain from upgrading to ios 11, then just stay on 10.3.3

      • then just stay on 10.3.3

Then you won't be able to play Pokemon Go !!!

      • +2

Are they still crippling your CPU speed to 'maintain battery life, or some crap like that?

        • +5

She told me it is a lot slower than it was and the battery stuffs up with major decrease of % in power for a casual use. I would probably understand on an iphone 6, but on the top tier of last year model … its ridiculous

        • +2

@Bubbleshark: I'm running the same model without issue at the moment, maybe do a backup and restore through icloud as the update may not have installed properly, you can also join the beta program to receive earlier updates. Apple is also doing reduced pricing for battery replacement if it were to come to it due the press release regarding reducing speed to prolong battery life https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354070

        • +3

@geosyd: Thanks, will tell her to do that. I think buying a battery just a year after getting a phone is a bit ridiculous but I would definitely have her replace it before the price reduction ends

        • +3

@Bubbleshark: if it is only a year old, then it’s probably covered under warranty.

        • +1

@Bubbleshark: hi bubbleshark, when upgrading iOS version you need to go in and step through all the steps to maximise battery life. Just google iOS 11 tips to save battery life or the like, turn off all the stuff she doesn’t use, it will make a big difference. iOS 11 improved battery life on my 6s, but if battery is an issue I’ve had an x for a couple of months and it’s batt life is just incredible. Cheers.

        • +1

@OzSikh: It'd be nice if that was actually possible but I doubt she would get an exchange because the battery drains too fast

        • @Bubbleshark: I think OzSikh meant the possibility of a free battery replacement, rather than a full unit exchange. Happy to be corrected : )

      • +3

Same here on my iPhone 6 plus after upgrading to iOS11, it's a shame you can't revert back otherwise I would stick to iOS10

      • +1

Ios 11 shouldn’t have a noticeable performance hit on a 7. It isn’t like it is an old phone like a 6 that people think should run just as fast with a new, bigger OS than the one it was designed with.
Reinstall the ios, and if that doesn’t fix it, take to it Apple. It’s still covered by warranty.

    • I will pass and rethink on next model. X is more like a prototype.

      • No, it’s amazing. Just ask any one that owns one!

      • I thought the same but after I owned it i found it amazing. No real flaws at all.

nice to finally see such a deal from an OzB regular who is clear about the stock origin

  • +3

Any deal for iphone 7 or 8 plus? People like iphone X but to me it is too expensive :(

    • +3

      looking

  • +4

Any chance of a similar deal on an Aus stocked 8 Plus 256GB?

  • This was a better deal, with Officer Works price beat offer.. After buying the IPHONE X, realized that it's crap and apart from the screen nothing else is good about it. Only one face id per phone, you can't setup multiple .

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354051?page=2#comment-5505…

    • +3

multiple what? users? iOS is purposed as a single user OS - multiple FaceID doesn't fit the standard usecase

      • Exactly. It'd probably need to run macOS instead

Phones are personal devices, multiple faces opens it to compromise when it's been designed as a single user system

        • +2

I prefer my girlfriend having easy access to my phone in the often likely event of me leaving it at home but needing some info from it.

However I'm guessing a pin can be used to unlock this phone too, so probably not an issue

        • +1

@Salmando: yup - PIN is the fall back and alternative choice

      • True, if you want multi-user, multiprocessing, multipurpose OS then Android is better designed for that.

    • +1

If you bought it from apple you could have returned it if you wanted to.

    • Simply factually false.

    • +1

Besides the awesome screen, what else were you expecting from the phone?

      • A larger experience then the plus model. But as the screen is thinner, everything is smaller. It sits somewhere around the 8 and 8 plus on the screen real estate.
Decided to sit this one out and get a plus model of this next release.

  • will Apple release an Iphone 8S or 9? what's the deal with the X? does it mean the next release can't/won't exceed the specs of a X?

    • +3

      celebrating 10 year anniversary i believe…

    • +1

The specs of the X aren't very different to the 8, other than the screen and face unlock. So the next versions likely will exceed the specs.

The screen, while nice for Apple, isn't groundbreaking in anyway so I don't expect the next release to be inferior. The X is simple the tenth anniversary edition.

      • +2

Animoji is also exclusive to the X. 😃

        • +2

Right. Keep forgetting about that revolutionary feature…

      • +1

The camera is absolutely amazing and craps on the 8 unless you go a plus. 2 x optical zoom is something every phone will have soon.

  • +1

This or Iphone 8 plus. My wife enjoys bigger size. Maybe 8plus will be better?

    • iPhone X has a bigger screen despite being smaller than the 7/8 Plus, but if she wants a physically bigger phone then the iPhone 7 or 8 Plus would be the way to go.

      • the plus has a larger screen in terms of surface area - the iphone X has a proportionally taller screen, hence 5.8" vs 5.5" but still being "smaller"

        • Actual area of iphoneX ~ 5.41" excluding the lost notch, round corners & narrower than 16:9 ratio.

        • +1

If the screen is bigger in surface area… then it’s bigger.

    • +14

      My wife enjoys bigger size

I think the phone is last of your concerns ;)

      • +3

        Compensation is his easiest option.

Get the X, or wait for the rumored 7inch mi Max 3

      • My wife enjoys bigger size. Maybe 8plus will be better?

Tell her I have an 8plus she can try

    • My wife enjoys bigger size

I see what you did there.

    Still too expensive for me

  • +17

$1700 for a phone is NOT a bargain. Sure it's cheaper than the usual rediculous price but that just means it is slightly less rediculous

    • +6

It's still a bargain if you want this phone.
I'm on the judging buyer's fence with you, but it's still a good deal.

    • +1

I'm in Japan and will purchase an iPhone X 256GB model from Apple for 129800JPY (~$1479AUD) cause no 8% tax! Way too expensive for me still, but my dad wants one so why not. Australian prices are truly ridiculous.

      • and you will declare it when entering the country right?

        • Of course, I'm not bringing in another $8500+ worth of cash or goods so not a problem.

        • @thektrinh: Of course. LOL

      • Aren't there downsides to Japanese phones? Like not being able to disable the camera sound and stuff

        • +1

Haha yeah, one of my mates is actually quite displeasured with that. But it's for my dad so not my problem.

        • +4

          @thektrinh:
Better make sure your dad knows that he can't get away with sneaky upskirt photos on public transport

          Lol@displeasured.

Need to check my transliteration codex.

          Brb.

        • @Eeples: Definition of displeasure
1 : the feeling of one that is displeased : disfavor

Have I used the word incorrectly?

      • I’m in Japan too. But wouldn’t pay that much for a phone. Would
Rather purchase from rep here. You lose the huge benefit of having Australian stock with an extended one year warranty via ACL. Definitely worth paying extra for the “free warranty”, esp if you can get GST back via TRS.
The only benefit of Japanese stock is that you can put your Suica card on Apple Pay in Japan. lol

        • Fair point regarding ACL but you still get the Apple warranty worldwide, so I'd be happy with that regardless. Apparently you can put Suica on non-Japanese models too? On a kind of related topic, the ACL 'warranty' is not exactly two years is it? It is a period which is 'deemed to be reasonable', depending on what you paid for the product if I'm not wrong (my own wording/interpretation)? So it could be longer or shorter depending on who you talk to.

        • @thektrinh: A little while back I took my wife's iPhone 6 phone back to Apple as she was having battery issues. At the time I took it back it was 2 years and 3 days old. The Apple 'genius' said it was 3 days outside the warranty period (but they still swapped the battery free of charge for me). So his comment of being 3 days outside warranty when it was 2 years and 3 days old I believe means they treat the 'reasonable period of time' as 2 years.

        • -2

@fattymattyd: it is two years exactly. This is common knowledge.
Pretty sure the Japanese models have a specific part that allow them to work with the infrastructure.

        • @ts13:
I had a case of a expanding battery (it cracked the back cover) - approx 2 years and 3 months out - as such they refused a warranty claim as it was outside of their 2 year on offer. I went through the ACL and made the argument that the ACL specifies "reasonable expected life" as opposed to a hard 2-year time-frame for a mobile. For a product over a few hundred $, I'd expect 3 years at least and the ATO seems to agree with that (as based upon their depreciation schedules you must write down a mobile over 3 years).

After going back and forth for a month, at which point I informed them of the ATO depreciation schedule and the ACL terminology in the Act, and the case got elevated to their legal team in the USA before coming back to Australia and in the end they offered me a full refund upon my return of the phone.

        • @OZChopps: sounds like you went through a lot of effort. I stand by the fact that Apple will honour a two year warranty for Australian models without question. People like you may argue further and may have success with discretion. Rarely, Apple staff may be generous where only a few days of leeway are over expiry.

        • Interesting stories. I agree, if I'm paying $1700 for a product, I'd be reasonably expecting to last more than 2 years but it is Apple I guess. Great job taking it higher and getting a fair go of it, I hate that they seem to make their own consumer law.

    • +9

Spelling ridiculous rediculous is ridiculous. ;)

    • +2

      *Ridiculous

      • +1

If the only thing people have to comment on is my spelling I take it you all agree with me 😂😂

        • As an iPhone owner yes $1700 isn't a bargain, merely a price below RRP. But bargains are subjective I guess.

        • +1

@spiff: for me if $1700 was justified there would need to be something amazing about it. I just don't see it. Then again I think $1000 for a phone is too high.

        • +2

          @MikeKulls:
The price isn't justified in any real way. $999 aud after taxes should be the most a bleeding edge phone should cost.

        • @Salmando: Spotify and has made the need for 256GB much less these days. Cloud storage to less of a degree also. The only use I can think of is for music and photos.
