Was just about to post the same deal, when I saw the price drop in my "Saved for Later" list.

  • +4

Picked this up in December for $195.20. I was expecting a slow archive but it's a surprisingly quick 7200rpm drive.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/423321

    • wow that is the best dollar per terabyte drive I have ever seen in my life.. nice find

    • +6

Damn, makes this $250 deal look like a ripoff

  • +1

Now, there have been some Seagate drives, not unlike this puppy, that were duly pinged for INSUFFICIENT VENTILATION [PORTS], compared to previous models.

I'd suggest: SAVE THESE FOR USE IN COOLER WEATHER or provide AirCon where used.

    • +1

Do you have a link to a review saying this?

      • Nope.

Just a memory of a comment in an earlier Deal.

In [reply to] that comment, the link you request was given.

However, we've got some HP &
        - in a diff. box - some Seagates are not unlike this Deal's.

Our HP drives are ~twice the thickness of the Seagates'

Putting a hand on each type, after the same run-period
give us cause to at least fan-cool &/or run 'em in Air-
Con'd rooms, at least on Hot days, like this weeks…

Our order's due ~5 Mar, & we hope it'll be cooler in ~mid-March

    • +5

Pretty much all external drives have ventilation issues, being stuck inside a plastic box ain't doing it no favors.

      • -1

Huh, I have never seen issues with external Hard drives and heat. Maybe because my ambient temps never get higher than 25c.

        • +1

My WD 8tb external arrived the other day, and it was hitting 60 degrees C in the external case when formatting it. It's been shucked and is now being used as an internal drive in my computer (behind a case fan) and now sits at low 30's, matching my other drives.

      • An article I saw reported, that
Seagate had reduced the # of holes
on a side of the HDD's box

        (Maybe making holes takes longer
        in the manufacturing process…?)

        • Speed holes!

    • Just received mine. The only ventilation ports are on the bottom. Strange. I'll see how hot it gets when I do a format.

      • Does it have just a US style plug? Or does it have adapters for different countries?

        • +1

It comes with 6 different plugs. One of them is an Australian one.

  • +11

Why do I look on ozbargain at 2am…. sigh. Just take my money

  • Thanks! been waiting for this.

  • +14

I'd be keen, but I've been burned way too many times by Seagate over the years. WD, Samsung, Intel, SanDisk, etc is where I'll trust my data. Thanks for post though, I was tempted momentarily. But nope, not yet.

    • +1

Don't be tempted to trust any of them. Backups count far more than brands when it comes to the risk of being parted from your data.

      • +1

Ive never had a wd die on me yet, ymmv. Still using the 500 green from 11 year ago for movies lol.

        • +4

I have two dead WD RED drives and a dead 5TB WD Black, so any drives can fail. The seagate do seem to have gotten better the last couple of years.

    • +2

For commodities like hard drives it's better practice to ignore anecdotes and look at the stats.

    • +4

but I've been burned way too many times by Seagate over the years.

I've been burned by all brands. There was a period where I saw multiple WD failures in a span of two years. Same with Seagate. I just replaced a WD Purple last year. You can't trust any brand - always backup.

  • Thanks, can never have enough.

  • +4

Time to upgrade my erotic video collection to 4K.

    • Need NBN as well

      • Once you got NBN you don't need a 10TB Backup Plus Desk :)

        • That's what I'm finding. Why archive that 40GB Blu ray remux when I can just download it again if I want to watch it again.

        • +1

40mpbs upload is shit slow if going backup 10tb of data…

    • +2

This device is aptly named. Seagate 10TB Backup Plus Desk Pornhub.

    • Next is 3D version…

  • +4

    6% cashback at Shopback.

  • +1

Back up to $417 now with back order. :(
Hate these overnight bargains during normal people's sleep. Lol

    • +3

Still $250 on my side. Do you want to check again?

      • Doh. It defaulted to MWAVE before at that price. Refreshed it a couple of times and back at Amazon @$250. Thank you.

    • +1

Check the other sellers window on the right hand side of the page. I just pre-ordered @ $250.

  • This item cannot be delivered to New Zealand. :(

    • +4

      those baahhhh-stards

  • +1

You might be looking for choice cheapies!

  • Officeworks don't match backorders do they?

  • Not overly keen on the expected backorder time.. but been waiting for another one of these bargains to pop up!!

  • +2

In my experience the really cheap items on Amazon just get delayed and delayed than they'll cancel. Happened with that cheap Smash Brothers guide last year I told everyone was an error but got canned for it…

I only ever purchase if it's marked as in stock.

    • Meh, they don't charge you til they are shipping. No loss on our part, and you can easily cancel if a better deal comes up.

      • +2

I know, but when you are actually genuinely wanting it, it can be a little annoying.

Far worse with pay now sites. But I just avoid the bother personally.

No need to get negged. Geez people are precious. I'm as big as pro Amazon person on this site.

        • I think this happens but never had an issue with amazon supplied

          • @unifex: The Smash Guide was an Amazon product from memory. Also had many harder to obtain items sit on my purchase history for a very very long time despite being available to purchase. Eventually they'll ask if you wanna keep waiting, then they'll just cancel.

            • @scuderiarmani: Never had that in the 6+ years ive ordered from Amazon.

              • @unifex: Well you haven't ordered much. Or you order typical ordinary items. I've been using them for many years, 99.99% no issues. I've had the Smash Guide, a DVD Box Set and one other thing cancelled.

                • @scuderiarmani: ive ordered a lot both here and in the USA. I order several things a week from there.

                  • @unifex: maybe you have had just some bad luck ?

                    • @unifex: You might be right. Still waitng for it to ship :)

    • Same thing happened to me with the cheap Nescafe deal that was posted.
I contacted them before it was cancelled to check and they ended up giving me a 10 dollar credit.

    • +1

It’s only been two days and ive already been charged and got a “item has been shipped” message

  • Ordered! See you guys in one month

  • +1

Ill never understand why a pre Order or back order can stay on the OB page…

    • When you think about it, it's no different to those cheap USB cable deals from Joybuy, Gearbest, etc. Order it now, receive it in a month. :)

Also, not everybody needs things now and are happy to wait a month to save $200.

  • Anyone used one of these to backup off a Synology nas?

    • +1

funny thats what im using them for. Whats the question ?
I have three 8TB backing up my synology.
Bit slow (not sure why) but they work

      formatted to ExFat

      • +1

Thanks I tried the 4tb 2.5" drives and they wouldn't stay awake for the backup job to complete. Half way through a job the drives would Goto sleep mode.
So was looking for a large capacity desktop drive to replace it. Thanks

    • +1

      yup - here as well.
Well, a mixture of Seagate and Samsung USB 3 external devices - reformatted to exFAT as well - to clear some of the NTFS overhead.
Using HyperBackup and exFAT driver (paid for - only a couple of bucks).
The initial backup is slow (lots of bits to copy across ;) but the later (weekly) backups only copy the changed files, and sometimes that is "nothing", so those subsequent backups are quite quick.

    • Yeah I’m looking at some sort of backup to cover fire or theft. Ideally I would backup to cloud but it’s too expensive. Maybe I need something with LAN or wi-fi and hide it at the other end of the house.

  • Finally managed to grab 2. Thanks!

  • -1

Definitely sold out, and if the Amazon US price is anything to go by it's exactly as I said, something that won't be fulfilled.

    • +1

Was fulfilled 2 weeks ago when I ordered at $249

    • +1

      My order has been fulfilled

      • ditto & apparently arriving on Friday!

  • Showing up as $417.12 with no Amazon option.

  • Gone?

Damn, just bought 2 ironwolf 8tb last night for $300….this amazon deal is a steal

  • +1

    Missed again :(

  • Can't believe I missed it again.
    Arrgggh!

  • +1

Well played everyone. I missed it but it's a thumbs up from me. Great deal!

  • Price is back up

    • Gone again?

    • not for me. but its a steal at that price

  • 8TB is $235

    • We just want the 10Tb because we can.
As Ozbargainers we demand Amazon make more avaiable at this ridiculous price, because as Australians everything else electronic/pc-related is so damn expensive.
We promise to frequent Amazon forever Jeff if you do!

  • The power cable is a US plug - is that an issue for this?

    • I've reguarly bought external drives off Amazon and just purchased an Aussie Cable at Jaycar or the like. I hate adapters.

      • Do you mean a Power Adapter?

    • It’s seagate so they should come with those deattachable power cables with all the different country plugs included. “Should”

    • +1

The power cable is a US plug - is that an issue for this?

Mine just got delivered. It comes with 6 different plug heads for worldwide use. One of them is an Australian one.

  • -1

How difficult to remove the drive without damaging the case? Just in case need warranty?

    • Pretty hard

      • Pretty hard

OK in that case have to assume no more warranty if we need the drive for internal use.

        • +1

          Just read this though.

Don't pry up on the case lid but instead pry the sides of the case outward. Using a hair dryer to heat the plastic doesn't hurt. It may be best to start prying at the front and rear, using an expired credit, debit, or gift card. With the last 5 Seagates I've opened, I've broken 1 tab.

  • +1

deal posted in the middle of the night! (WA)

    • Not really, it was just after midnight - I ordered one at around 12:15am.

Definitely middle of the night in the east.
