Yes there is a way. It's in data usage settings on Samsung at least

      • +2

Same here on Moto C, Android 7.0.

Then you click "Billing cycle" to activate restrictions and set cycle, limits etc

    • +5

I'm using a Redmi Note 5 Pro, running on Pixel Experience, Android Pie so it may be slightly different depending on your phone brand and OS.
Essentially, here are the steps according to my Android Phone,

      1. Open Setting app
      2. Go to the Network & Internet Tab
      3. In the Network & Internet Tab, select the Data Usage Subtab
      4. Find the Data Warning & Limit under the Mobile Title and select it
      5. In the Data Warning & Limit,
        a) You can set a data limit which turns off your data completely when you pass the limit until the end of the cycle
        b) You can set the cycle (time period) for each month (30 days probably)
        c) Set a data warning, which will pop a notification to tell you that you are close to the limit

      Hope this helps.

Hi mate, just so you know some (all?) MIUI phones require a change to make hotspot work when using this sim card from Boost. (we have redmi 4, redmi note 4 and redmi note 5 pro in our family - all required it).

Edit the APN type under your SIM settings from "default, supl" to "default, supl, dun" and it works nicely.

        • Thanks for this piece of information, I will remember to change it.
I was also wondering about your experience using the boost (telstra) network on Xiaomi phones which do not have Band 28.
Does it frequently drop out in CBD and suburban areas or is it stable?

          • @KevinYuhhhh: Haven't had any issues myself but this is going to depend heavily on where you are and what you want to do with it. I am told 700mhz is particularly good for use in buildings etc as it goes through walls easier?!? Personally I think the hype over b28 is overrated by most but that's my opinion. When there's a phone as good as the note5 for the same price with band28 next time I need to upgrade, I'll happily buy one. The Telstra network speeds are/can be ridiculously good compared to Vodafone I used to be on (I ran a few speedtests because I thought the reading was inaccurate - and burned through almost a gig of data in 5 minutes hahaha). YMMV.

            • @ozoner: I live in Western Sydney. B28 really doesn't matter to me, it didn't penetrate walls any better than my voda network phones. They were getting similar speed and consistency.

I ain't complaining. Means for next cycle, I'll just buy kogan's 40gb plan.

    • +3

Anyone recommend a way to limit the data

On a iPhone, the best way is not to give your kids your password. Then you'll be fine.

      • What about the pin?

        • +2

Nah… They got used to the pain and it doesn't bother them anymore…

          • +1

            @jv: Juvenile Violence
            Ozbargain says no.

Please don't put your kids in pain even if it doesn't bother them.

There are better ways to limit their data usage.

    • You usually can on android in settings under data usage but it doesn't really stop data more like track it and then there is an option to turn off data after a certain specified customised amount.

For me I put mine at 6gb to be safe even though I really get about 6.66gb per month.

It might not be super accurate so best to leave about 20% of extra space in case of usage tracking errors.

    • +1

Ditto on my Nokia 7 plus Android 1 - plenty of Data limiting options. You can also restrict selected individual apps if running save data mode.

  • +1

Anyway way to buy this online from Coles? My nearest Coles is almost 1 hour away :(

  • +2

Really good deal as unlimited International standard calls & text to 25 selected destinations +1200 standard mins & text to 30 selected destinations and Telstra network too

  • -8

Already bought wish card can I use it at Coles?

    • +9

Are you seriously asking whether you can use wish cards at Coles?

    • +5

No. Wish Cards are Woolworths group only

    • You're a (profanity) lazy bastard!

  • +1

Is there any difficulty on porting between Telstra prepaid and boost? I heard some one said that is hard to port online. I am on Telstra prepaid now, planning to move to Boost. This deal is sweet.

    • +2

If you are porting from Telstra to Boost Mobile, you will need a special blank Boost Mobile SIM. Please call 1800 026 678 (8am-9pm AEST, 7 days) and we will send one out to you.

You may have to call Boost's call centre to get a blank sim mate :)

      • Should be able to port out to another provider using a $2 sim then port to boost?

      • Thanks

    • +1

I ported from Aldi mobile to Boost on Good Friday. The port took about 5 minutes, the quickest I’ve ever seen. No issues at all, everything is working well. As usual, just ensure all your details (e.g. first name, last name, drivers licence etc.) line up between the SIMs.

Knowing that though, I’ve never done a direct Telstra to Boost, so YMMV

    • +1

For roughly 10 days I was not receiving text messages from certain mobile numbers.
I only figured it out because when talking to these people they either hadn't heard back from me, or I hadn't heard from them.
I communicated with the online boost help chat. They went through the setup on my Samsung. Seemed like they were troubleshooting and using a different Samsung… Anyway they told me to go to the Telstra shop and get a new sim because my Boost sim was defective. Telstra shop couldn't help and life got in the way so I did nothing.
A few days later a whole bunch of text messages suddenly flooded through. It seemed to have fixed itself.

Been using Boost for about 6 weeks now. The 4G drops out regularly which is really, really annoying.
I accept I've gotten what I pay for and so definitely feels like a budget service. I recommended Boost to a lot of people due to price when I first signed up. I keep my mouth shut now. I'm stuck with them for a year and wouldn't put anyone else through the nonsense I have been through with them.

TL:DR Budget service - initially didn't receive text messages; 4G drops out all the time.

      • have been with boost since mid march coming from telstra prepaid. Apart from the carrier name change there's been no difference between the two carriers apart from the much lower cost with boost

      • Was your previous service a Telstra based service? Is your phone an import or locally sourced?
        Thanks

        • Previously with Optus. Local Samsung. I'll wait out the year but then ditch Boost if there's no improvement…

  • +2

I'm guessing that you can use this as your minimum spend, on a weekly shop, for the bonus flybuys deal on at the moment?

    • +2

      normally mobile charge doesnt count.

  • +1

when do I need to activate the recharge?

    • +1

When you want to use it.

    • +2

      before it expires :)

  • Currently with Optus and would like to swap over.
So do I just buy this, pop in the included sim, port my number over online and thats it?

    • Almost, yes.
Buy this, do the port online, wait for the SMS and/or text and THEN pop in the new SIM. Otherwise you are going to be off the air for a while.

    • +6

I think its better to keep your old sim on until it goes invalid sim, then swap over the new sim instead.

    • +1

I don't think you'll have much luck unless you know someone who has advance access.

  • Shit, I bought the optus network 2 weeks ago, always wanted the Telstra 4gx network since I heard is 3 to 4 times faster than traditional 4g and 4g plus

    • -4

Boost does not support the 4GX network, though it does access full Telstra 3G/4G coverage across Australia.

      • +2

Boost does has access to 4GX. It's all the other Telstra resellers that don't.

        • -2

Boost only utilises the 3G and 4G network, not 4GX. You will however get full Telstra 3G/4G coverage as sepa pointed out

          • -1

@cruiserbruiser: In your opinion which part of 4GX does Boost NOT get?

            The multiple frequency bonded link?
Or one of the following individual frequency bands?
            700MHz (B28)
            900MHz (B8)
            1800MHz (B3)
            2100MHz (B1)
            2600MHz (B7)

            • +1

@wholistic: 4GX (700Mhz) coverage seems to be available to Boost customers, but at throttled speeds. You can read a bit more about it in the link

              https://community.boost.com.au/t5/Recharge-Network-Support/D…

              Hi Shalama,

A per Telstra's explanation - When analogue television was switched off in Australia, the spectrum it was running on – 700MHz – became available. We took up twice as much of this superior spectrum as any other carrier to deliver you 4GX.

Better in the bush – 4GX uses superior 700MHz spectrum that can go further than previous 4G frequencies, creating extra 4G coverage in rural and regional areas.

More for metro – 4GX offers extra 4G in-building coverage and faster 4G in-building speeds compared to our regular 4G, bringing speedy web access when you use a compatible device in a 4GX area.

I can confirm that 4GX speeds are not available to Boost customers.

    • +1

Yes, the speed is crazy where I am, regularly get 150mbps, has been up to as high as 278mbps.

    • +1

Yeah, I'm with Boost now thanks to OzB and getting near 200Mbps in Melbourne suburb - some say Boost is speed-capped or don't have 4GX access but perhaps that's no longer true.

      • Are you in Melbourne city or suburban areas, to get those speeds also indoor or outdoor

        • Still Melbourne metro, just 20km east of Melbourne, indoor at home but I think I'm close to a tower.

However, I commute via congested train. In there I consistently get 0.5-2 Mbps in the morning rush with Boost (only really dies in most of city loop). Those low speeds are bad for video but acceptable for most other browsing - still better than Voda/Optus that stop working quite a bit even before reaching the loop.

          • @jeozb: I’m on optus at home and get around 25mbps at home with 3 bars which I only get occasionally. I don’t see any tower insight but if you see it then good for you, that means you will get consistently 4 bars

            • @[Deactivated]: Oohh yep ok. Yeah, I get full bars for all 3 networks… I’m pretty sure I was also getting around 200Mbps with Optus back then (although iirc <100Mbps on Voda).

  • Do Coles sell boost prepaid phones too? (my current one is locked to optus)

  • Literally just ported in yesterday (though bought using 5% off Wish GC at Woolies so not too much lost)

  • cheapest with overseas roaming

  • +1

Sorry, but I've never bought a sim card from over the counter, do you need to take photo ID and fill in any paperwork there, or just run in pick up the pack and go to the checkout to pay, the rest being done during activation? Thanks.

    • +2

You used to need to do that, but not anymore. The reason is that most mobile network providers use electronic verification so when you register online, you need to enter details of a valid form of ID. The only exception is Belong I think.

      • Great, thanks a lot for the quick replies.

        • valid form of ID

Meaning drivers licence or passport/ any government-issued document or any way to legally identify you.

The only exception is Belong I think.

          Wait why's that??
Are you able to activate the Belong mob sim without registering it to your name (using your driver's licence/passport)?

The ACMA says you need to?? Well for prepaid plans at least…
          Some FAQs

          • +1

@CC123: Yes, you can activate the Belong SIM without giving any ID details. Belong mobile is a postpaid one as per their website.

      • What kind of details do they usually need? Like license number, date of birth, that kind of thing?

        • +1

Drive license details, medicare card details or passport info.

        • Hi, still not clear. When are you saying package do you mean just 2$ SIM package? Or do I need to somehow bundle 150$ recharge as well and pay it over counter? Because I am wondering how do others pay whole 137$ package with eGift card?

          • @SunElf: Basically, I will be happy if I can just buy the $150 recharge for $135 (preferably with eGift card(s)). OP is suggesting if we also purchase a $2 SIM card at the same time, $2 will be waived.

    • +2

just run in pick up the pack and go to the checkout to pay, the rest being done during activation :)

      • +1

beat me to it by about 3min lol

  • +1

Is it possible to purchase it with an e-gift card?

    • +3

      Yes

  • How does overseas roaming work for Boost mobile?

    • The same way as other networks.

As long as it is active you get service overseas.

    • receive sms for free, have to recharge with International add on pack to use overseas

    • Yep agree with other comments — although note they don’t have “$5-10 roaming packs” (only pricey roaming credit) and no data support at all abroad if I’m not mistaken. I’m with Boost now as I don’t travel too much but if I do I’ll be sure to buy a local or travel SIM.

  • +12

When your missus picked up this deal for 150 the other day and you're already annoyed because she should have got the 120 Optus deal but forgot to. And then the 150 deal goes on sale for 135, right in the middle of the two deals.

    (profanity) it.

    • +4

Pretty sure that's grounds for divorce.

    • +10

Get a good bang and forget about the $15 or $30.

      • I dont think you'd get a good bang for $15 or $30 :)

      • +2

What if his wife finds out?

        • +1

          that's $15 for a lifetime of pain

      • Good bang? You've never met her then. I'll get a mediocre at best once a fortnight if I'm lucky.

        • Close to r/deadbedroom?

        • +1

Sounds like you may have some more substantial problems than missing out on a $15 saving on a 12 month mobile phone plan!

  • Good deal. Boost has been great for me. Coming from Woolies, quick and painless number port, and I now have voLTE and rcs messaging, and AFL Live Pass. All for cheaper than I used to pay for less.

    • How do you get AFL live pass on Boost?

      • Load the app whilst on data not wifi

        • I can't seem to see anything under my offer. More details would be appreciated

          • @arctan: Download the AFL app and in the top right corner you should see the live pass. I think you have to be on data, but not too sure. I think I had to activate it, you dont need to register anything. You can then connect a Telstra ID and use it on any phone if you want

            • @mrnmt: How do I get a Telstra id if I am on boost mobile?

              • +1

@arctan: Boost is Telstra, when I signed up I was dealing with Telstra, but you don't need to be a Telstra customer to create an ID. If you turn off your wifi and use your data on the setup, you can bypass creating an ID if you login with mobile (it'll just use your mobile number automatically), and it should give you the pass for the season.

You can also make an account with an email, so you can use it on non telstra devices.

  • -3

For around $100 more you can get 20gb free calls and text every month for a whole year. Kogan.

    • +11

      But Kogan…

      • -1

        What’s wrong?

        • +11

Different network, not full telstra like boost

        • +3

          No international calls.

        • It's Kogan.

    • for less than $235, why don't you go with catch mobile ( optus) get like 375gb (31gb per month)

  • +1

How does this work if I am currently on the $30/mo plan. Do I just use this topup with my current sim or do I need to change in the app settings somewhere to change from the $30 to the $150 plan?

    • Did you figure this out?

  • After 80gb data is used does it automatically top up an extra 1gb for $10?

    • No, I think the data just stops working. But you can use Telstra 3G/4G to buy more data :)

      • Thanks, that is good to know.
