Ersatz maple syrup should not be encouraged.

    • hard agree

      • but blueberry apple cinnamon flavoured 🤤

    • You mean "Ersatz Maple Flavoured Syrup"

Any Maple 'Flavoured' Syrup should not be encouraged.

      • It’s ersatz because it isn’t syrup.

Any maple flavoured syrup is therefore ersatz maple syrup.

  • +14

There is nothing real in it except for some water and salt.

    • +3

Actual maple tree sap would be too good for my kids tbh, wasted on them.

Ingredients - Water, Sweeteners, Sorbitol, Sucralose; Natural Flavours, Thickener: Vegetable Gum (466); Salt, Acidity Regulator (330), Colour (150d), Preservatives (202, 211).

Would you like diarrhoea with your pancakes?

    • +6

      Yes please!

    • +5

Sorbitol is often fine in small amounts, it's Maltitol that's the real killer.

  • +3

Just a question. Not a judgement or anything at all. And just by chance I happen to ask this here.
Why are catalogue specials advertised/displayed individually on this site? (I may be WRONG in saying this is in the catalogs)
When I see ALDI items individually listed, I wonder why as the new catalogue is available at: (said link)
It’s not me picking on this user/post. Please let me know if I should ask this somewhere else. I’m a novice user. I LOVE this page. I’ve saved a heap of money here! I LOVE this community. I just ask a maybe silly question. TIA xx

    • +1

I often wonder this, some people think to give us a service even for useless items like this maybe

    • +1

You're welcome to combine them all into a mega submission, if you wanna.

    • +2

Personally I don't understand how colesworth specials, especially on $2 items that you may buy a few times a year, get to the front page.

    • I agree, but, you also see heaps of posts for individual eBay items as well, when they are part of the mass store 15/20% off deals

      • I find those posts useful as well, especially when checking the price/sale history for a particular product

    • +2

People farming for karma votes by posting every item from weekly catalogue.

      • +2

        This isn't Reddit…

    • I often find it useful to benchmark good prices for pantry essentials such as toilet paper or Extra gum

    • We allow both deal posts with a long list of catalogue specials as well as deal posts that highlight one or a few items, as longs as there are no duplicates in the titles. This is based on community feedback - some have mentioned that it's easy to miss good individual specials in a big list.

You may be interested in the discussion here. Thanks.

Getting this to set up my ant bait. Hope they like sugar free.

    • Boil some sugar and water?

  • +2

Real or nothing for me. I generally get mine from Aldi, I wanted to refill my jars at a bulk foods place, but it works out cheaper to just buy a new bottle!

    • +6

Was just going to say the same thing.

Not sure what the case is / was here, but in the US/Canada it used to be (confusingly) Grade A and Grade B and I prefered Grade B which is now known as (Grade A) Dark Color, Robust Taste.

Then there's the fancy maple syrups, rum or bourbon barrel aged. Delicious.

Wish there was the same variety here.

      • You sound like you know your maple syrup! What brand do you buy? Do we even get any in Aus that would qualify as Dark Color grade? I'd love to try!

    • +5

Consider that when you buy at bulk foods places you pay more also to support their hipster lifestyle, weekly barbers, german sandals, bikes with no gears ecc.

      • -5

Consider that you are a fantasist dreaming up scenarios to confirm your opinions.

  • +1

Should be renamed to sugar and maple free syrup…

  • +7

This would be great to flavour smoothies/yoghurts/desserts without the calorie hit.

    • "flavour"

  • -1

Isn't Maple Syrup technically sugar free?

    • +4

With 68g of sugar per 100g? No, not really.

    • +3

      This is not maple syrup

    • -1

      Yep, exactly like honey.

  • +3

Someone who upvoted this, can you explain why? Much like many of the colesworth items that are only a few dollars, It's a cheap item you'll only buy a few times a year if at all. Seems waste of front page space.

  • How's is fake maple syrup a bargain? Cheaper to DIY simple or caramel syrup instead.

  • +3

Once you try grade A Canadian/North North American Maple there is. no going back to “flavored”.

I’m currently enjoying a maple that had been barrel aged in old whisky barrel from a distiller from wodenville Washington state.

    • And how does that compare to Queen or Coles/Wooolies brand?

      • +2

        Probably shits all over it

      • +1

        TEER3X above is correct.

I would say that grade A maple from Traders Joe is so much better than Queens. I got a few bottles of trader joes maple. I like how you can get early and late season maple syrup and how there is distinct differences in intensity of flavour. My American in-laws bring me maple syrup and Washington State craft beer when they visit.

      • Certainly many many times more expensive.

    • +1

This is the maple syrup I was mentioned. It’s awesome.

      • Thanks! I'm afraid to ask for price but please do share.

        • +1

Just checked. Works out to be 33 Aussie for 250ml
Probably should thank my brother in law.

  • +13

This is perfect for people counting and watching their calories. I have all 3 - the blueberry one and maple one are both great (for what they are - not to go head to head with the proper good shit)

But the apple and cinnamon can go f@#k itself

    • +8

Yeah, a lot of comments above from people who have less than no clue as to why people use this.

      • +5

Yes so much this. If sugar is not an issue for you, of course you’d buy regular maple syrup. The whole point of this product is that it’s sugar free. Aside from watching calories, it’s something that diabetics can enjoy or if you’re on keto.

    • apple and cinnamon can go f@#k itself

D’oh really?? Was looking forward to trying this. I love apple and cinnamon as a flavour combo.

      • +2

I actually really love the apple and cinnamon flavour on oats. 1 cup of quick oats, 1.5 cups of water, a minute and a half in the microwave, a sprinkling of stevia and a good serving of the apple and cinnamon flavour is amazing.

But different people have different tastes.

        • Thanks for the feedback, apple and cinnamon oats sound amazing. I will give it a try then, can't hurt for $2.10!

    • +2

I have all three in my cupboard for keto, personally only like the maple flavoured and not the other ones. And of course I would like real maple syrup but I just don't budget for it in my diet.

      • -4

If your serious about Keto then don't put chemicals in your body as a replacement for sugar, simply
eliminate all sweeteners from your diet, your body will thank you.

        • +4

That's one philosophy, thanks for sharing, I didn't realises ketosis had levels of seriousness.

        • +3

Ah, yes, the all or nothing hardcores that drive people away before they even start.

        • +2

I tend to agree but some people are so addicted to sweet things that they need products like this to reduce their dependency.

          • +1

@mapax: And as long it's a "gets you over the immediate temptation" thing rather than an everyday, it's doing its job.

        • +1

If fake sugar works for people then go for it. Everyone has to start somewhere.

I found it easier to transition to fake sugars, then eventually ditch them altogether.

          • @ChickenTalon: Good that you ditched them, some of the main ones are carcinogenic.

  • -6

This is like having “chicken free” KFC. It should be a crime.

FYI Queens maple drizzled on a KFC zinger bucket is absolutely amazing. I use about half a bottle on a 20 piece feed and it’s the perfect second morning tea snack before first lunch. Sweet and spicy!!

    • Chicken and Waffles, anyone? 🤤🤤

  • +1

As someone who eats keto and is marrying a Canadian I think these are a very good maple syrup substitute. Obviously don’t taste like real maple syrup but they are actually a decent option on chaffles!

As above, the apple cinnamon one is horrendous!

Bought 10 of these on this half price special.
    It’s a plus from me!

  • Last time I brought and had expiry date too early. Plz check

    Dry
    1 cup flour
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1 tablespoon sugar

    Wet
    1 egg
    2 tablespoons melted butter, cooled
3/4 cup milk into which 2 tablespoons white vinegar has been added, 5 mins waiting time to coagulate

    Makes 6-8 pancakes

I've been making pancakes for years and this recipe is the most consistent. You get nice pillowy american pancakes. The only things are make sure to wait 5 mins for the milk to go thick, and when adding wet to dry ingredients, DO NOT overmix. You can mix it gently until it's still slightly lumpy- those things should disappear during cooking. Also, if you have a fairly new pan, you shouldn't need to grease it.

    • +1

Sounds like a good recipe, surely you would only top with real maple syrup, not this junk.

    • what type flour

  • +1

This is not food. It's designed and made by chemists in a lab.

    • +4

You could say that for lots of food posts on here.

    • +2

You had a look at the Colesworth catalog each week?

    • Of course, all of the other processed food in the supermarket is also damaging for your body.

      • Yes, and they're actual food-alikes used in large quantities, not just things you use a little of, like this

  • -1

Or maybe get real maple syrup instead. The one from Aldi is good value

    This stuff is rank.

  • 1l of actual maple syrup at Costco for $16 vs flavoured artificially sweetened water.

  • Don't forget to mention it comes with diarrhea with excess consumption!

  • +5

The site is full of deals for lollies, chocolates, ice cream, soft drinks, energy drinks, all sorts of over processed sugary junk that sends readers into a frenzy; but a deal for an imitation dessert topping, that's just too far! Too far.

    • …its pretty funny innit?

  • Never tried one of those but keen to. Which one of the flavours should one avoid?

  • You can get Queen Pure Maple Syrup 250ml for $7 on special at IGA until Tuesday.

  • …contentious!

    • Yes, once the new week of specials start, the old ones stop.
