Free Speed Boost for nbn Fixed Line Customers (Modem Reboot Required, Selected Areas)

2620

Hi all. From the outset, please note this may not work for everyone but has certainly worked for me and a few others I've asked to test. Let us know in the comments how it went for you. Read this article on Whirlpool so gave it a go. Previously getting 46/17Mbps on Speedtest but now getting 54/18Mbps after a modem power cycle. Not sure what the '15% overprovisioning' really means, so I'll let the experts comment below. This article has a lot more information. Hope it works for you. Stay safe, and enjoy :)

Edit: Telstra announcement.

Mod Note: This is not specific to Telstra, the deal is just linked to a Speedtest hosted by Telstra.

    • Aussie BB has not changed over all connections. They said more to come in August.

      • +2

        Ignore this^
Getting 65mbps out of 100mbps has nothing to do with the overprovisioning.

        • Did you reply to the wrong person?

What I said is coming from Aussie BB MD Phil Britt.

          • +1

@Twix: No correct person. You are replying to a comment where the user is only getting 64.8mbps on a FTTC connection. This has nothing to do with ABB and the overprovisioning process. He has some other issue affecting his connection.

            • +1

@AusNugz: Ohh I thought it said 94.8. Yeah your right!

    • How are you connecting?

    • Hell no.!!
You are getting ripped off dude.

Either downgrade or call 'em to have a look what's going on.

    Bargain/forum whatever - thanks TA

  • I'm with Exetel on FTTN and a few weeks ago modem dropped out for a while (as did my neighbours, and a few days earlier relatives near by but on a different node).

When it finally came back noticed was syncing at 60/22 instead of 55/22 (same as neighbour) and was able to use the extra 5mbit.

Reading that article I guess that's why

Where did you get that list, coz my POI is listed but sync speed still the same?

        • +1

Looks like that applies to ABB only.

          • @forumninja: Note at the top I put:
Remember that your provider also needs to enable the change.

            • @AusNugz: Noted. That is the list of POIs that ABB have enabled the change in.

      • I'm on ABB on one of the listed exchanges and didn't see any difference in sync speed. Admittedly it was already syncing at 103 on FTTN.

        • You may have unfortunately reached the limit of your technology :(

    • Anything for SA pls?
Edit: Nevermind, I see them hiding in there

  • I had two minor NBN HFC outages on Sunday night which I didn't think much of, and when I ran a speed test on Monday evening I had the overprovisioning applied (56~58mbit down vs previous 49.5mbit).

With Telstra connected to 3DAD POI

    • That's how i got mine too

  • +4

A 100mbps was previously 100mbps BEFORE overheads. Overheads are how packets and frames are routed, they contain things like sending IP and destination IP, alongside the data. The overhead typically isn't much, but it's enough that a 100mbps connection theoretically maxes out at around 97mbps, with the remainder being overheads.

NBNCo is now over provisioning, so a customer on a 100Mbps plan will be provided a link of around 115mbps. This means, after overheads, you can actually download over the 100mbps.

    TL;DR:
Previously was 100mbps of data + overheads, now they're aiming to provide 100mbps of data, with the overheads compensated via overprivisioning.

    • Great explanation, thank you.

  • +1

This worked for me - I’m on ABB, usually get around 48mbs on my mesh setup, ran a test now and I’m getting 53mbs … I’ll take it

  • +2

Calling it Speed boost is misleading…. thought you were referring to upgrades from 50 to 100mbs which they aren't offering anymore!

  • +1

3DAD-DANDENONG here with Superloop. No change to speed. Still getting about 91-92 down and low 30’s up FTTC.

Gone from 32MB -> 42MB after the restart with exetel.. happy and thanks TA!

    • This looks unrelated to this deal. I am betting you haven't rebooted your modem in a long time and overtime your sync speed has deteriorated.
You should be getting fairly close to 46mbps before overprovisioning on the 50/20 speed tier.

I voted for the ALP and I live in an area that got the initial rollout of FTTP and am now enjoying gigabit fiber from Aussie for $150 a month, which is a bargain compared to the rush I get from speedtest.net. A gigabit connection straight to my computer, in one of the lower income areas of Australia, what a time to be alive. Any one of you who didn't vote for the ALP have no right to downvote me.

To think how much better the country would be (think COVID/working from home)

    • +1

Under the current Liberal government NBN have been quietly replacing FTTN with FTTP in a lot of areas. I know of entire small towns that have had the upgrade. It's not all that bad.

      • Are you sure? Those that were getting below 25 they started installing micronodes to boot speeds. I haven't seen anything about entire towns getting upgraded to fttp. Would be a massive fuvkyou to the ones that paid for the upgrade themselves

        • Yes I was in the meetings with NBN regarding those exact upgrades. Happened in TAS.

          • @Clear: Didn't tasmania get the full orginal ALP rollout since they were the test site for Nbn? So were basicly all fttp and fw

            • +1

@DoesntEvenMatter: Not quite. Select suburbs got the full rollout early and most of Hobart/Launceston received the rollout before the Libs were elected and the remainder received FTTN, Wireless and everything else they do now. In some towns years later before you could pay to get FTTP yourself they opted to put FTTP in. There was already a lot of dark fibre from previous government projects in place that they could reuse and select businesses were first served.

              • @Clear: I'd like to see more information about this. I know they had to do this for some properties not achieving the minimum 25mbps. But I don't know of any whole areas going FTTN>FTTP.
Firsthand I know of areas that were fully planned out for FTTP and once the Liberals were voted in were downgraded to FTTN.

                • @AusNugz: I can see a few councils were considering an area switch from FTTN to FTTP but they didn't go ahead.

      • That might be because the old copper lines need to be replaced, which is just another added expense and probably why they are doing it quietly. Sorry but my cynicism for the NBN blunder is huge.

        • Pretty much.

    • -4

You forgot the people that would still be waiting years for BB under the original shot from the hip policy. Because of what was involved in the rolllout of fttp, "easy & cheap" connections were done first in areas that already had reasonable adsl.
People outside the 4.2km limit would still be waiting.
Net access is not all about people who live in inner city areas.

      • +1

This has been disproven. The cost per premises was decrasing and the speed in which FTTP was being rolled out was increasing. The rip up of the plans has caused the NBN to rollout slower and for a higher cost. All to protect the Murdoch empire.
The practice of leaving a premises for later because it is too hard is more prevalent in the Liberals fraudband rollout.
Fun fact: People outside the 4.2km ARE still waiting.

      • What percentage of people live outside of city limits in Australia? Less than 5% maybe?

        • Think the figure thrown around is 89% of people live in an urban area.

  • Noticed this a few weeks back? I'm on 50/20 plan. Originally max line speed 23 down. We had phone line in house cleaned up/shortened and jumped to 28 down. We've done nothing else to the line and it's now max down 62 and it's connected at 60.

      • There is no saving to be had, i've posted similar deals and had them moved.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/485500

This was deemed not a deal even though i had 100's of likes as there is no monetary saving. I want mods to show consistency. Nothing personal but this belongs in the forums.

        • +2

Here are your reasons to neg a deal

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

I believe you need to report this if you believe it belongs in the forums.

        • I want mods to show consistency

lol 14 reports 2.5 hours later no chance

P.S. I don't think this is a deal either. It's like maccas not filling up their fries fully and now ACCC says they have to, then posting a deal about the fact that you should be getting what you paid for plus an extra few fries at the bottom of the bag just to make sure your bag of fries is filled..

      • -7

I wasn't going to neg but now I am.
This is not proof on why this should be considered a deal. That was a free upgrade from 55mbps to 115mbps. This is a minor correction to appease the ACCC so that you can receive the full speed of the NBN plan you are on in off peak periods.

It's like making a post on the ACCC ruling that Valve must honour ACL (refunds) for Australian customers.

        • Do as you please. At least 100 others disagree with you. Voting guidelines are written for a reason:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

The report button is also there for a reason.

          • +1

@tightarse: Gosh using your popularity as a reason to keep it as a deal post. I think OzB fame may have gone to your head…

In all seriousness TA you post good deals 99% of the time. This is not a deal nor is it good.

            • @AusNugz: If rebooting your modem stays as a deal I have a few that will blow your mind:
              - Turning your car off at traffic lights to save fuel (YMMV, possibly targeted to your car model)
              - Asking McDonalds crew to fill your fries up to the top
              - Changing NBN providers to the ones with the highest CVC pools to get the best possible peak evening speeds (can possibly result in higher gains than 15%)
              - Hiring a registered cabler to disconnect additional telephones sockets in your home's wiring to offer up to 70% better speeds on FTTC/FTTN/FTTB

              • @AusNugz: You getting better speed than what you paid for, isn't that a deal? Normally speed pack will cost you you $20 for the Full speedpack.

Agree with TA here it is a deal here, you getting something for free without negotiation or haggling

                • @777: I am now getting the full speed I pay for with a few Mbps extra saving approximately 10 seconds on a gigabyte download.
Maybe if a single provider was offering this it would be a deal but as it is across all RSPs on the NBN network, no cigar.

            • @AusNugz: You’re not making sense. I’m merely pointing out the voting guidelines and suggesting to put your case to the mods if you believe it needs to be in the forums. Whether it remains a deal or not is not my concern, so please don’t make this about me.

              • +8

@tightarse: The only thing not making sense is your justification for this being a deal. The two are not similar in any way other than they are related to internet speed.
If this was a post that connections were being upgraded from say 25/5 to 50/20 at no cost it would be a deal.

          • @tightarse: If that's your logic, my deal needs to be re-instated.

            • +3

@Austrian Oak: Start a TWAM then and stop complaining.

              • +1

@Arthur Dunger: They're just upset their reports were marked off as resolved with the deal remaining and their negative votes removed. They don't really care about anything else.

                • +6

@Clear: I don't care about the negative vote I just fail to see how this is a deal.

We'll be posting the TAKATA airbag recall at this rate.

                    • @Clear: For the record this comment means that people who pull those shitty lines are simply jealous and will negative vote for the sake of it. Ya'll hit the upvote instead of the neg haha

                • +2

@Clear: I have still not seen one good reason why this deal does 'NOT' belong in the forums. Can i start posting deals when telcos give me extra data for something i already pay for?

              • -1

@Arthur Dunger: You've obviously missed my point. I did start a TWAM but because my name is not TA i have no pull here, had i posted this deal it would have never been allowed and moved to the forums within minutes, which i have proved with my post because it was moved for the same very reason as this post but this is allowed/exception to the rule.

That's the point entirely that the rules need to be clear for all and not just for some otherwise what's the point have having guidelines if they don't apply to all.

                • -1

@Austrian Oak: Do you not see the irony here? You're mentioning the rules & guidelines to get your point across yet you disregarded those very rules when you negged this deal because you're bitter one of your deals was removed.

Relax it's just a bargain website, there are more important things to worry about.

                  • -3

@Arthur Dunger: My negative vote was well within the guidelines and i stated my reason which is there is no monetary saving to be had and as such it should be posted in the forums which were all valid negative votes posted in my thread. It's funny that you don't see the irony when all im asking for are the rules to be applied equally to all and the more you disagree with me your actually agreeing with me.

      • +3

i think the whole forum/deal thing is bit beside the point.
At the end of the day i must confess i find this information useful.

Sorry TA. I appreciate your awesome posts. I think this post is super useful. BUT i still find it slightly disappointing that you can't see why some people might think this belongs in the forum and the difference between what you posted and that previous speed boost.

Having said that I don't really think it is a reason to neg. (As TA said report if you want to. Mods can decide what is best for the site). Sure it may seem there is some inconsistency with some similar deals going to forums and vice versa but lets be honest -I don't think its black and white that this is clearly a deal or a forums.

        • +2

My post got negged for the same reasons and because it was JV who made a stink my post was taken down. Go take a look. The mods are not consistent.

          JV "No Savings, No bargain"

          • @Austrian Oak: yep
            lol life sucks

but seriously you gotta realise these things aren't black or white.
may not be the same mod

it's possible all the upvotes/ and great work TA does with other deals may influence how mods deal with this. But there's bigger things to worry about!

          • +2

@Austrian Oak: Yeah, I guess they "drive traffic" via stupidity, or something, but certainly mods pet, for sure.
