The 970 EVO Plus is at quite a good price in comparison to other NVMe drives checking Staticice, but because of the massive price difference I'd just opt for a 2TB MX500 for a lot less. The 2060 has my attention though, as it's pretty much at U.S. prices rather than being around $100 more expensive than the 5600 XT.

    • Uhm apples and oranges? One's NVMe and the other one is a SATA hence the price difference.

      • +4

The price difference is massive, IIRC the MX500 was $350. This doesn't justify NVMe when there's no real world difference, for most SATA will be just fine. I'm sure there is a need for 4K video editors and such, but to most it's not worth the extra $150.

        Edit: $339 delivered at Centrecom.

agree with Rajeh, better off with a 2TB Sata and a 500gig nvme (usually around $100 mark) and you'll still save yourself about $100

          • @scud70: Oh lol never thought of it that way.

          • @scud70: edit: sorry missed the cashback so you'll save about $50 an gain 500gig in space too :)

        • 318 But I hate paying 13$ shipping. Shipping is too expensive in Australia. :( https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/crucial-mx500-2tb-560…

        • There is actually a big difference if you have 2x NVMe drives and you copy files back and forth.

I have a Samsung 970 Evo Plus and a Intel 660p in a Hades Canyon NUC and file transfer speeds are ridiculously fast. A 4 GB fill would copy across drives in 2 less than 2 seconds!

        • when there's no real world difference

Some people's wallet beg to different. A whole lot lighter about this paper speed exercise.

      • mx500s are the most underrated ssd one can buy. It's performance and durability per $ is second to none. Where as the 970 evo is a performance based drive meaning its usually alot! more expensive for next to no loading times decrease.

        • Not everyone is trying to put together a gaming PC though. If you need to move large files around, SATA vs NVMe is the difference between night and day

    • I get the sentiment that a SATA SSD is good enough for most but the MX500 is not even remotely in the same class of drive as the 970 Evo. For a budget 2TB drive with decent performance, the Adata XPG is a good pick (currently $407 AUD from Amazon US).

The 970 EVO is close to an MX500 with a couple new things. It has an NVMe controller and form factor over the MX500, and it uses a DDR4 DRAM cache over the DDR3 on the MX500. They are both TLC drives with DRAM, so neither will disappoint. I wouldn't say, not even remotely, they're pretty close aside from the new connection and they'd be indiscernible in the real world for most, but the 970 EVO Plus definitely isn't just an MX500 with a new connection protocol. The SX8200 Pro is a good find, I'd take it over the 970 EVO Plus.

        • It's a weird argument to make. It's like saying a Ferrari and go-kart are the same because people mostly only drive 50 mph.

Besides the hugely different R/W speeds (~2500 vs ~500 MB/S) the Samsung also has a much higher rated endurance 1,200 TBW for Evo Plus 2TB vs 360 TBW for MX 500 1TB.

So yeah, if you leave out all the big differences, they are basically the same…

          • @garbage man: You… you just compared 2 different sized drives. The MX500 2TB is rated for 700TBW, still lower than the 970 EVO Plus. What's baffling me is how seemingly conservative Crucial are being on their rating for a DRAM TLC drive, even the Kingston A2000 1TB is rated for 600TBW. WD are being even more conservative giving the 4TB WD Blue a 600TBW rating. Is there some tech I'm missing (controller?) or are Samsung just rating their SSDs much higher or other's rating theirs much lower?

            • @Void: My mistake, I thought you had suggested 2x 1TB drives.
720 TBW is still much less and regardless of how and why it's rated it's still a matter of what they will honour for warranty.

              • @garbage man: Does surpassing the rated TBW void warranty? I tried googling the matter but couldn't find anything useful.

              • +2

@garbage man: You will most probably take over 5 years to reach that many TBWs. So it should be fine. The only reason you should buy a Sata over nvme is to save money. I have seen too many benchmarks to see that it makes no noticable difference in real life if you use sata vs nvme. But if you copy around a lot of files and frequently zip/extract large files, the nvme will be noticebly faster :) The higher iops cannot be ignored.

      • 5 year warranty is hard to let go of.

        • The Adata has 5 year warranty but no idea if/how it works given that it from Amazon US.

          • @garbage man: Even if they support warranty under australian consumer law(1 or 2 years I dont remember), it will still not be for 5 years, just the 1 or 2 years.

  • Intel BXNUC10I3FNH4 i3-10110U Mini PC Kit shows $449?

  • Is it worth buying the 2060 now? I don't need a GPU straight away but need to get one in the next month or so, likely to be more deals around by then?

I was considering the $399 5600 XT but was put off by the bad reviews. I am after a silent card when its not being heavily used.

    • +3

Which 5600 XT to be exact? You need to be a lot more careful when choosing RX 5000 series AIBs, because there's many design screw ups with high hotspot temperatures and GDDR6 temperatures. I think many were fixed, but you never know if a store is going to hold onto old stock.

Edit: I'm guessing the ASRock Challenger D, it's $399 because it's hot garbage. I made a more in depth comment on the post as to why.

      • Yeah I read your comment, not planning to buy that. I don't game that much so I want a quiet system more than anything for the occasional game.

        • If you want an example of a screw up, meet my 3500rpm 130W RX 5700 non-XT which vibrates my entire desk ;)

I'd recommend the 2060, Galax are quite a decent brand and it's pretty much at 5600 XT prices.

          • @Void: It works out to be the same price as this Evga card though (although its currently out of stock) when you factor in delivery frees and surcharge of SE vs 5% cashback of Amazon.

            https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B083GH7LXW?pf_rd_r=KBWA…

            • +3

@cycleri3: I'd go for the EVGA one then. EVGA are great with warranty, and with this one you get a chance of having a downbinned RTX 2080 die in there. More undervolt/OC potential and better productivity performance.

              • @Void: @Rajeh is there a physical difference between the normal 2060 die and the downbinned 2080 die, or how could you tell by testing?

                • @adamispeng: GPU-Z may be able to tell you. Otherwise you can use some benchmark that the 2080 die excels in and see what it lines up with. The physical difference would be on the die itself.

More deals should be appearing due to the imminent release of the Nvidia 3000 series

    • If you don't need it right now I'd hold as there are more "official" leaks of the NVIDIA 3000 series stuff indicating launch is soon.

Does anyone know who can price beat with the WD green 480gb ssd?

  • Apex worth it over a Thermaltake?

  • Shopping express any good? Some bad reviews here and there

    • +9

Nearly all stores have bad reviews for one reason or another.

I've used them about 10 times never had an issue.

Also keep in mind Futu Ebay = Shopping Express = Shallothead Ebay

      • Thanks! Appreciate it

    • From personal experience they are better than mwave. Bought multiple times from both recently and shopping express packages arrived about 1 and a half weeks faster.

the 2060 isnt even super version….

    • +3

Can you complain at $469? The cheapest 2060 Super I've seen this past while was $549.

      • $469 is quite good price now but should be cheaper soon with the 3000 series arrive.

        • +1

When has a GPU ever gone down in price brand new though? Used probably but new I doubt it.

          • @Void: Agreed, sometime gone down a bit but usually not that much.

  • Slightly OT question but is an NVMe M.2 drive visible on a PC motherboard or is it covered somehow? I'm thinking about buying a Kingston A2000 1TB instead of a Samsung EVO Plus 1TB to save money but just wondering how much the blue colour of the Kingston will stand out on an MSI X570 Tomahawk motherboard.

    • +2

It's visible but you can buy a heatsink to put on top of it, will hide it and stop it overheating

      • Thanks! In that case I'll go for the Kingston A2000 as I can't justify the much higher price of the EVO Plus.

        • It really depends on the mobo you have. I have an x570 carbon pro and it has a built in heatsink that covers your NVME ssd

        • Or you could grab the wd black 1tb nvme for under $220, and even less with %5 cash back at the moment still so almost the same price as local Kingston.

          https://www.amazon.com.au/Western-Digital-250GB-Black-WDS100…

  • Should I cancel my Gigabyte B550M Aorus Pro and order the MSI MAG B550M MORTAR here instead? I'm not in a rush or anything but just warranty issues might be easier to be dealt with locally.

    • +1

If you are not located in NSW, Amazon is likely to be easier to deal with than SE. I don't know how SE handle RMAs etc and return shipping. I think the Mortar is a better board, the only reasonably priced B550 boards that have USB-C front panel header are the MSI Mortar and Tomahawk.

    • +1

Amazon have a pretty good policy even when dealing with them overseas. I'd stick with the Aorus Pro.

      • +2

I would stick with Gigabyte or Asus.

        • ASUS

Not on AMD side after the atrocity that was the STRIX B450-F lol. A 3900X would throttle on those VRMs. Neh I think they're aight, but I wouldn't consider them top tier with MSI around killing it with their AM4 boards.

          • @Void: I have a lot of problem with MSI before not sure not.

            • @superforever: What problems have you had with them?

              • @Void:

What problems have you had with them?

Like motherboard dead, won't boot something like that after years of use not that reliable like Gigabyte or Asus.

I still have very old Asus motherboard still working.

                • @superforever: Others will beg to differ, others won't. Their motherboards are best in class before they're dead :)

    • Thanks all! I think I might stick with my Aorus Pro ;)

  • Which SSD would be the better choice to replace my current 120 Gig Boot drive?

The WD Green 480GB SSD for $69 or the Samsung 860 EVO 500GB for $89 (-$20 cashback)

    • +5

      samsung

      • Yup this right here. It's got a DRAM cache so it will be a chunk faster, and it's the same price post-cashback.

    • Samsung, WD Green a bit slow of course still faster than hard disk better use it for second storage.

  • +1

Bought 2060, thanks OP. Great price and comes with Death Stranding too.
