    • I heard it from somewhere a long time ago, saying that if you don't collect the card or activate it after a certain amount of time. Then it will be automatically cancelled, but not sure if it's still the case anymore.

    • -1

Westpac is known for doing this.
      Really annoying.

  • Is it easy to set up direct debit from a non-Westpac account to pay off the balance in full every month? I believe it's just a few clicks online for ANZ and NAB but St George made it difficult with paper forms to be completed and signed.

    • Don't know about NAB but for ANZ, WP and SG I always have to fill the form and hand in person at the branch (or mail in) if pay from another bank.

Citibank is the one that I just simply uploaded the form via the secured portal.

  • Im still waiting for my points for the deal back in April

    • How many times have you contacted them? I never let it drag on.

      • +1

Quite a few 5 or so I’ve lodged a complaint also my friend has the exact same issue still waiting for points

        • wow that sucks,
did you have a screenshot to show them?

  • God dangit, i just applied for the other one a few hours ago.

    • +1

I just called them on 1300 130 961 and got them to cancel my Platinum card application which was still pending.
      Applying for the black instead.
An extra credit file enquiry, but that's the price a churner pays :)

      • Nice. I CBF, another 2 beers and ill forget about it.

        • 15k could buy you multiple beers.

          • @nightelves: 19k points for $100 wish gift card… tempting. But, those 2 extra beers are down the hatch.

  • Is this the first good credit card deal for existing customers ever?

  • Nice deal OP!

Hmm. They seem to release the Platinum offer first as a cannon fodder every year, which is still a pretty good deal, before releasing the Black points deal. I wonder if this is a deliberate tactic to reduce the pool of applicants for the subsequent Black card round.

  • I doubt I would have made the income cut for this card so I'm not too salty about getting the Platinum instead (putting a fair bit of pre-tax income into super). Otherwise, it's an excellent deal for no-fee - no-brainer!

  • Op please add minimum spend required

    • Minimum spend added

  • Usually (pre-pandemic) I would go for Altitude and convert to 50k Krisflyer - but now I am thinking perhaps Qantas as they don't expire (and I already have about 600k Krisflyer that will expire in 2022 I think).

    First world problems… ;)

    • +1

Wow! Start locking in rtw with Singapore Airlines. You can always transfer them to Asia Miles which does pretty cheap intra Asia for 10k. Used to allow a stopover as well but they've since stopped that.

      • RTW you need to book all legs in at once don't you?
Or at least they need to be all booked before you commence- could run into the issue of not being able to get flights. Seems like it is hard enough to get a single flight sometimes. Especially since you need the Saver award (also two people would be going.. one person it's often a bit easier).

        • Yeah they made it harder because you have to input all your flights in great circle mapper to make sure that it’s within 35k miles. They make you do the hard yard before ringing them and yes once it’s locked in, it’s locked in compare to Qantas where you can chop and change right till end of January with incurring any fees.

  • Just called and cancelled the Plantium card and signed up to this one.

I've been conditionally approved for $15k but the confirmation email says 'Attitude Black World Mastercard' - is that right? anyone getting the same? I thought its 'Altitude Black Rewards'

    • By doing so, you now have 2 credit checks on your file and only extra 15k points. Not worth it.

      • Debatable. Depends on where your credit status is at the start.
I did exactly the same as itzSTARSCREAM, cancelling the Platinum to get the Black.
As one poster said above, this is the (small) price you pay as a professional card churner

        • +1

Credit status is not the issue here, I am talking about the value that you are getting per credit check. Cutrrently you only got 15k points for that new credit check. You could have applied some other card for that credit check, let's say ANZ platinum or any other and would have received 75k + 60k Qantas points (total 135K qantas points) with 0 annual fees for the first year.

If you have already done it, don't worry about it.
But, for others, rather than cancelling and re-applying, you have much better options out there.

          • @jsb:

If you have already done it, don't worry about it

            I don’t. I churn cards. That’s what I do😄

  • You beauty !!

  • What kind of information are they asking for when applying?

    • +1

“Do you smoke” was one of the questions I think

      • I was so high, I might have missed that question

    • The bare minimum, compared to other applications I’ve done with the big banks over the past 12 months. Some personal details (no ID check since I apparently still had a valid customer profile from 2018), net income, total (household) expenses (summed up) and whether or not you have any other debts. I didn’t want to do the income check by logging into to my savings account with another bank so uploaded 2 pay slips and got approved within 24h (on the weekend).

  • +3

Like many of you, I applied and got approved for the Platinum card two days ago. What I don't understand is why so many people are going FML just because you missed the Black card offer.

If you're comparing apples with apples, then forget about the additional 30k Qantas points that the Black card promises AFTER a year of holding the account. You will be slapped with the $250 annual fee.

    Platinum - 75k Qantas points - $6,000 credit limit - spend $3,000 in first 90 days
    Black - 90k Qantas points - $15,000 credit limit - spend $4,000 in first 90 days

To put it bluntly, people are crying FML because they think it is worth taking on an additional $9,000 credit limit and commit to spending another $1,000 in the first 90 days to earn an additional 15k Qantas points?

In fact, the stakes are higher because you gotta spend $4,000 in the first 90 days or you don't get any bonus points at all.

    Food for thought.

    • +1

      Two points here.

      1. Additional credit limit isn't a bad thing (?)
      2. $4000 in 3 months is like 1.3k/month - not a huge spend for most people. We're a household of 2 and we spend about 2-2.5k easily with household expenses.

You rightly point out that the comparison is 75k vs 90k, but for a lot of people getting the Black would be a better pay off i.e.15k extra for no extra effort. So FML

      Tl;dr. YMMV

    • +1

AFTER a year of holding the account. You will be slapped with the $250 annual fee

I think most OzBargainers are credit “savvy” enough to see that it’s not worth paying $250 for 30k Qantas points. There may be some that just like having a black card, but most people will pocket the 90k points then churn, waiting for next offer.

  • I’ll closed a altitude business card last month. Would this fall under the exclusions?

    • From the T&C it seems like you're good to still get points for this offer.

  • Credit card service down it seems

  • +2

Please be advised that this service is currently unavailable.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

    Please try again later.

  • Thanks. Got approved a few hours later. Just about time to pay annual car insurance.

  • +1

So no annual fee but still this cost if you choose qantas?

Annual rewards program fee: $0 if you choose Altitude Rewards; $50 if you choose Altitude Qantas

    • Correct. Still have to pay $50 to opt into Qantas Frequent flyer direct.

  • I'm generally interested in getting my first credit card as I currently use a debit card I have a substantial amount of savings and I have no idea if I would get approved for something like this but I'm just wondering what are people going to be spending $4000 on in 90 days? I'm sure some people have some big $ purchases to make but for the general person that just pays their bills there any real way to reach the $4000 minimum spend?

I prefer to spend my own money but I would like to build some credit for the future and I believe credit cards have a lot better security and protection than my debit card

    • +1

Just groceries and bills would probably do it for a lot of people, I think, especially those with families and children. You can also prepay extra into your bills if you're looking a bit short at the end of the 90 days to make up the rest.

    • +2

Once you have family (dependents), $4000 spend in 3 months is easily achieved.

Otherwise, if you're a single person with no dependents, target the the big yearly lump sum payments within the 3 months period:

      Car Insurance / CTP
      Home content insurance
      Gym/sporting/hobby memberships
      Quarterly Bills (non-Govt entities)
      Phone / Internet costs
Plus your household consumables, groceries, clothing and petrol
Discretionary EBay / Amazon / Bunnings purchases
      Buy an AC for summer
Replacement of Whitegoods (washing machine, fridge, dishwasher)
      Car service / new tyres
New Furniture / computer / AV equipment

With my current Westpac Black card, I'd forecast my spends on a spreadsheet to see if I'll meet the threshold.

Ended up exceeding the $4k spend within 6 weeks 😅

      • For us, car is the big one, that's easy to predict and schedule around. There's a 4 week period when we need annual comprehensive insurance renewal (around $550), rego ($380), ctp green slip (around $460), and pink slip + once a year service + fix any issues (cost varies a lot year to year, but say $900 to $1000 ballpark average). So that's ~ $2300 alone. And then add any other normal household expenses. So I always try to make sure we have 2 cards in their bonus period open simultaneously at that time of year, and it's never a problem reaching the min spend.

    • +1

      Pokemon cards.

    • Getting solar battery installed for $4k, no credit card fees. Coincidence… I think not!

    • “I prefer to spend my own money but I would like to build some credit for the future”
Keep this mindset and please don’t get a credit card to ‘build some credit’. Use it only for the points and treat it as a debit card (ie only spend what you can pay off at the end of the month).

“and I believe credit cards have a lot better security and protection than my debit card”
Not something I would worry about or use in your decision making whether credit cards are worth it for you. There are more chances of you running into fraud with a credit card but you’re generally covered well by the banks here. Also, the more cards you have, the more riks you run of a credit card number every being compromised. Something you can mitigate by using Apple Pay or Google Pay and using eg PayPal for online purchases.

  • Offer ends 11th November 2020
I closed my Westpac Black card 12th November 2019… Daaaarn

    • What would happen if you were to apply on the last day and then stall the income check part of the approval process by a week or so, by not immediately sending through your pay slips?

  • Do Woolworths Gift Cards count as eligible purchases as they do for ANZ ?

Normally, I stack these deals with https://www.cashrewards.com.au/woolworths-gift-cards to do once off purchase and then retire the card.

†Eligible purchases do not include interest, fees and charges, cash or ATM cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, gambling transactions, payments to the Australian Tax Office, government charges, BPAY or similar transactions (such as Post Billpay), refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account.

    • want to know as well, i know some energy suppliers like lumo have rewards (woolworths gc, harvey norman gc etc etc) could i charge the gc onto the westpac cc black or platinum?

      • I always paid at least $500-$1000 on WW e-gift card for every CC to meet minimum spending requirements. Never see it rejected with ANZ, StG, WP or Citibank for the points.

  • +1

does it count if you were a sup card holder?

    • I just called up to ask and was told we will be ok if we were the sup holder

    • just get the platinum

    • Interestingly they asked for post tax income, not sure if that means they're more strict in the process…

      • I think this is a fair better indication of how much disposable income you have as it takes into account not only tax but also salary sacrifice

        • I actually wouldn't be able to tell you my post tax income annually without having to do a calc of all my pay…

There's the new passed tax rate changes, salary sacrificed extra into super, other salary sacrifice for flex leave which is only across a few months etc.

Took more time than i expected plus having to upload all the dividend statements…I just ended up editing the income to exclude extras because it was so tedious.

    • Interested to know also. Currently have 3 cards

      -ANZ travel adventures 27k limit
      -Amex Premium Qantas 3k limit
-st George platinum amplify 6k limit

On an income of 50k but would like to replace my ANZ card as the travel adventures is pretty useless atm. Not sure if they would approve me if I cancelled the ANZ as income is 25k less than what they say they require but credit score is good….

      • Also st George being a subsidiary of Westpac would they have a different credit criteria?

      • Wow no way you'd be approved with the new credit standards…

That ANZ Travel Rewards is a major red flag in itself. Get rid of if or downsize the limit

        • I got all three cards this year under the new standards. My mistake choosing max limit on application for ANZ but never thought they’d give me 27k after previously only having a 1k limit

          • @Jj456: Jeez that's interesting…

I cancelled my ANZ Travel Rewards after they introduced the new benefits instead of the flight.

I'd revisit your portfolio of cards:
            - Amex understandable for the offers and it's a low limit
            - St George I'd assume you're just churning so could be cancelled if you get the Westpac black
            - ANZ no real benefit unless you have the existing travel benefits

            • @Unorthodox: Yeah I’ve just redeemed points so I can cancel ANZ. St George is just churning so will cancel once points settle. Amex I’ll keep until annual fee is due again and canceled. Might get a new card once I close both ANZ abs St George and before Christmas spending.

  • Just started opening my St George credit card with the 60K offer. Getting approved for a 15K limit might be hard for me as I will need to close all my credit cards bar one. I think there should be the same offer for Westpac next year… hopefully.

  • Another who has recently applied/approved for the Platinum card. When logging in, and looking at the Black, I don't see anywhere about first year free. The platinum yes, the black $250 (+$50 QFF program). Even the public link posted up above has the same charges.

    • I'm on mobile, this is what I see at the top of the page from the OP's link:

Uncapped points earn rate: 0.75 Qantas Points per dollar spent on eligible purchases, uncapped6

Annual card fee: $0 in the first year, $250 thereafter+

Annual rewards program fee: $0 if you choose Altitude Rewards; $50 if you choose Altitude Qantas

      Variable purchase rate: 20.49% p.a.
Variable cash advance rate: 21.49% p.a.
Interest free days on purchases: Up to 45

      Minimum credit limit: $15,000

      Minimum income required: $75,000

      • When I click the OP's link, right you are - it has the zero fee for first year, however I've found no other way to navigate to it. (Not that there is any purpose needed if you have that link). As an existing customer logging in, I still see the Platinum offer of first year fee free (minus Qantas) but the Black has $250.

I'm unsure how the offer was found, but it's academic to me.

        • I was logged in and the offer scrolled across my screen for about 10 seconds….I clicked on it and saved the link, which I have posted above. This scrolling offer on my homepage disappeared soon after my first click and has never returned. Searching the Westpac site even after logging in, will show the $250 fee.

  • So it's $0 first year but + $50 for Qantas program fee.

Is there an easier way of seeing when you closed your Westpac cc in the past?

    • +1

Correct. That's true of their Platinum card, too.

  • -2

Got denied for the Bank of Melbourne card the other day. Would Westpac use the same process?
Btw, I got denied because I overpay my mortgage and the overseas processing centre can't think outside the box and put two and two together and see that it's my choice to pay that amount

  • I'm hoping someone can confirm what figures you enter for credit card applications e.g I'm solely applying for the card, does that mean you would enter half of what your mortgage expenses are if you own the house with your partner.

  • I am an "additional card holder" of my partner's Westpac Altitude Rewards card. My partner is the primary card holder, not me. I did not apply or manage my partners card.
I am an existing Low Rate Card holder (primary holder).
Does that make me ineligible for this deal?

I have read this link, but card get the right answer, I will try chatting to Westpac aswell
    https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/man…
Who is responsible for the credit card?
As the primary cardholder, you’ll be responsible for the use of the additional card on your account and will need to pay for all transactions made by the additional cardholder, including any charges as set out in the Conditions of Use.

    • Additional card holder is eligible for bonus points.

      • I meant can I be eligible for this deal, although I am already 2nd card holder of an existing Altitude Rewards Card?

  • Thanks! Awesome Deal :)

  • there is a rewards program annual fee of $50 if you pick Altitude Qantas

  • Newbie here so mainly looking for some advice.. Happy Saturday :)

Haven't had any credit card in AU since i moved down here at the start of 2020. Have lived at the current address only since past few months, what kind of chances i have for this CC application, given

    a) Don't have any credit history;
    b) Only last week got approved for the Telstra mobile offer so one (or two not sure) credit checks done.
    c) Have been banking with Westpac (with basic balance less than $1000) since day 1 as it's not my salary account.
    d) Have no loans, mortgage or dependants
    e) income criteria seems fine…
    f) Have savings in high interest rate account
    g) Age over 35

Negatives to my situation: short tenure at current address, no credit history, possible recent 1 or 2 credit checks.

Keen to apply as the offer seems very appealing but not sure if it would be approved or i should consider any other alternatives to get a credit card.

Would it be worth even applying for this card in such a situation?

Thank you for your advice in advance :) Stay safe all.

    • +1

      I'd see two potential flags,

      1) Is your employment with the same company for at least the last 6 months?
      2) Your time at address is very short.

If you meet criteria 1, I don't see you having much issue given you can upload extra documents.

      • Thanks mate, unfortunately the criteria 1 does not fulfil in my case.

I was only hoping that my relationship with the bank may help but that does not seem to be the case…

        Think I should wait…

And also just realised, I haven't changed my address on the DL so that could another issue?

        • +1

You could give it a shot, they only asked for 2 most recent payslips or 3 months worth of bank statements (assuming that's to cover 2-3 months of pay).

That said they do ask you for your tenure at your current address and employment. Whether they accept the short term because you're from overseas is up to them.

          • @Unorthodox: Thanks mate, i will check it out on their website now and may be give it a shot :)

            • +1

              @new2melbourne: Got this:

Great news – you’ve been conditionally approved* for a Altitude Black World Mastercard® with a limit of $15,000.00.
Before we can send your card, please provide us with your income information.
If you haven’t already done so, please verify your income now.

Have uploaded the income statements so fingers crossed…

  • I can only see the Platinum card offer (75k Qantas Points or 100k Altitude Points) under credit card section after I login into my account. Does that I mean I am not eligible for the Black card?

    • You need to click on the link I supplied or 'Go to Deal', you won't find it searching Westpac's site or looking under credit card section. Log into your account then come back to this page and click on the link

  • So, 50k kris flyer points, or 90k qantas + $50 fee…having trouble making up my mind with this one…

    • Main thing is are you going to use the krisflyer within 3 years. If not, just get the qantas points as they don't expire (as long as you earn a few points now and then.. eg BP petrol).

    • Depends on your travel goals. For me, the extra 50k brings me closer to the 116k points needed for future trip to Europe.

  • If I have an existing westpac CC (low rate one), how likely are they to give me this one ?

    • They'll consider your current financial status. Not because you have another CC. Your history of paying on time would be a bonus.

Source : I'd this CC before then apply for low rate one for the cashback. All good.
