I wish I had WFH capabilities. For 2 people that's 20k a year. 3k less than what I currently pay for rent in Sydney. I'd jump at this 100% if I had the means.

    • You do need to share a room with the other person. Is that your current situation?

      • +18

What do you expect when you’re renting in Sydney CBD?? Your own room and shower??

      • A room? Luxury! 20k barely gets you a shared walk in wardrobe

  • Internet included?
    Might do this for WFH.

    • People already have, mostly Americans moving out of State of New York/California.

It says complimentary WIFI included - although no mention if this is timed or restricted.

    • +2

The time difference is really a deal breaker. You will need to start work at 3am.

      • +2

Perfect for breakfast about 4 hours into the work day then!

  • +27

    Cheaper than Sydney

    • +10

      Most places are.

  • +1

    Does it include housekeeping?

    • Being an active hotel, they'd come by each day (I can only assume). I was on Kooddoo at the Mercure and they did that.

      • +4

Most longer than a weeks stay end up only house keeping every 7 days, not daily.

        • +1

Standard would be twice a week to empty bins and replace towels, with one full service a week, assuming it's like where I've lived/worked.
          Not a bad deal tbh…

        • +6

that's more often than I clean my house!

Wouldn't want to be there in the wet season

  • Should get together for a group buy… 4 piece timeshare 3 months each.

I think the living expenses would kill you though

    • From the terms & conditions:
"The names of both guests must be provided at the time of payment and are not able to be changed. Only these two named guests will be allowed to stay in the bungalow."

Why not list it on airbnb?

I stayed here for my honeymoon. Was 10/10. Some tips:

    1. The breakfast is 10/10. Buffet style. Everything you want and made to order as well. The hot tip was to go as late as possible and fill up so you don’t have to eat lunch that day. Saves the cost of the meal. Can grab some packet cereals and fruit when you leave to snack on during the day

    2. Anantara Veli is one of three resorts connected via ferry - all part of the the same larger complex. You stay here but can visit the others. It’s like having three resorts to use - each with their own dining options and beaches. Awesome.

That’s all the info I can give. If I had the cash I’d take this up for sure.

Can someone babysit my kids for a year?

    • Stayed at Mercure in Kooddoo 2 years ago and was telling my wife let's ask the locals to rent out a house for a year. The price of this isn't too bad actually but dinner will be a big problem if it's not included. I remember the gourmet burger alone with Aussie Wagyu Beef was something like $28AUD++

Can someone look after our horses for a year?

      • You'd need to get a boat and fish, or work with the locals somehow to buy food. There'd be supermarkets on Male of some kind, or just get family and friends to ship you a pallet of mixed canned goods.

      • +15

Burgers are expensive. You have horses. I can see a solution..

        • Found the Ikea rep

      • So the burger cost less in overseas luxury resort than in AU? Damn.

      • I haven't stayed anywhere for a while.

Can someone look after my dog for a year?

    • bring some empty containers, lunch and dinner sorted

      • You aren’t officially allowed to take the food from
The buffet but I used to fill my pockets with biscuits and stuff and carry out the fruit in my hands pretending to eat it

    • How much did you pay for your honeymoon trip, if you don't mind me asking?

      • +4

        Sep 23-30 2014
        Cost us $3843 US

We haggled with the agent who was organising our trip - who is a male local. It was originally quoted as 6K. All of a sudden it got cheaper. Once we were there, I paid an extra 100US/night to have our last 3 nights in an upgraded room. If we’d booked the upgrade prior to arriving to would have been 1200US in total. It was great. An upgraded room is worth more to them filled than empty.

        • Thanks for that! Seems like you got a pretty good deal.

    • +1

You get a +1 for your last sentence!

    • lol

  • +1

Not bad, but you could buy a house in Moldova for that price.

    • +5

??? Moldova vs Maldives, what comparison are you making here?

      • +39

The first, third, fourth and sixth letters are the same?

      • +2

        Both paradise.

    • +13

But then you'd have to live in a shack made of potatoes in bleak and dreary soviet-era Europe… that's a far cry from all you can eat breakfast buffets on an over-water bungalow in a tropical paradise.

      • Haha but at the end of the year you'd still have a house.

      • +6

Have you ever lived anywhere small, remote and tropical for longer than a week? It might sound good looking at the postcard, but the boredom would drive you nuts…

        • I lived with sonny…. He was small, remote and smelt tropical… It ain't worth it… I'll take a navy air carrier any day….

I think you are sad for not reading facts and relying on youtube and Facebook news

    • +7

The climate emergency was declared by the Maldives Parliament less than 9 months ago. You don't mean that in the resolution it predicated that the islands will be under several metres of water within 9 months? I hope you did read the resolution to back that bold statement.

    • +5

What sources are you relying on for this claim? Or are you just fitting the stereotype of the majority with this view of a lot to say but no idea?

    • +10

How do people like you get out of bed of a morning and just decide to be so wrong?

      • +9

        murdoch et al

    • +6

Another poor soul lost to the bullshit algorithmic bias of Facebook and Twitter.

Good luck in the future buddy.

    • +2

      "climate emergency BS"

      Wow.

People who refuse to look at the hard facts available to them, and instead rely on Fox/Sky News and other Trumptard 'news sources', are the ones that are wrecking this world for everybody else. They in the minority, but have somehow been given too much power, too much voice.

Scientific facts, evidence based decision making, even commonsense. These are the attributes that used to apply to most full functioning adults that made the important decisions in the world. Now it's a race to the lowest common denominator.

These same people bleating about conspiracy theories and climate hoaxes will be the FIRST to scream for help when reality sets in.

I wish you the best of luck in the near future redler… it sounds like you may well need it.

      • Just as watching every episode of Judge Judy doesnt make one a lawyer, why is it so many people feel qualified to have an opinion on climate change either for or against without at the very minimum gaining a degree in the field?

        • +1

          What a ridiculous notion.

If 98% of properly qualified scientists reckon something is true, I don't need to become a scientist before agreeing with their educated opinion!
You're confusing "supporting" science, with being an actual scientist…. and then incorrectly saying I can't voice that support because I'm not one.

Your post actually supports my argument btw. Who are you to go against all that scientific evidence? I'm safely assuming you have absolutely NO formal qualifications in the field?

And yes… I like Judge Judy, what of it :).

          • @UFO: Correct, I didn't study climate change at uni therefore I have no opinion on the matter.

Just as I don't spew financial advice to people after reading the wall street journal.

            • +1

@t_c: But people ARE free to give financial opinion to anyone that listens… especially if they ask it of you.
Fool on them if they put too much weight on the information they receive however.

But if someone asks for my opinion, I'll gladly give it. You honestly don't you give your opinion on anything because you don't possess formal qualifications on the topic?

              I get what you're saying, I do.
But I'm not publishing a thesis or pretending I know something special or new. I'm free to express an opinion that scientific consensus backs me up on. That's better than expressing an opinion not based on any credible fact.

Not expressing an opinion at all would completely remove the premise behind this very forum now wouldn't it :) ?

After a couple of weeks you would be bored out of your brain. This sounds like a fantastic offer… for the hotel. They know few people are coming in 2021 because of travel restrictions.

    • +11

This. As much as it sounds like a dream, after staying at a similar resort in Maldives for 5 nights, the maximum I could possibly stay without feeling imprisoned no matter how beautiful the island is would be 2 weeks.

    • +1

Yeah I agree with that. But you could take it as a meditation getaway. You’d be able to really disconnect. Or to do remote learning (course) on the side of a job. Something really accessible from there like marine biology or coral biology. And learn snorkeling, free diving, kite surfing or something for fun.

If I didn’t have kids, and a wife to say no, this would be a thing I’d seriously consider.

    • Monsoon season in an on the water stay?

    • +3

This! I've stayed in a fair few 'tropical paradises' in my time. A couple of days of boredom is relaxing, but after 4 days I can't wait to leave. A year would feel like a prison sentence…

      • Exactly. People fail to realise that there would be nothing to do there. Sure, honeymoon and holiday you go there for a few days to relax and shag… but a YEAR!? You'd go mad!

      • With netflix, a suitcase full of crafts and another of books 3mths would be perfect.

        • +1

          With netflix

With slow internet? Good luck with that.

Better off bringing a hdd or 2 full of movies and tv shows

      • Yep.. 2 weeks max! How many omelettes can one man take?

    • +5

Did a 2 week scuba holiday on Uepi island in solomons.. So remote, no TV, radio - nothing but sand water and coconut trees.

They had to drag me off the joint at the end of the 2 weeks…

    • +2

agree, as one of my friends told me, you visit paradise for a holiday or a memory

live there and it quickly becomes hell

The food in Maldives is very expensive. You also have to pay with US Dollars which means losing 30%+ of your money when you exchange it.

    • +32

Not sure if you understand how currency conversion works. If you go to Vietnam and pay with VND you don't gain 15,000% spending power.

      • +33

How dare you assume my Dong isn't worth 15000% more in Vietnam…

      • -3

I'm saying the AUD/USD is at 0.7 last time I checked. Go to an Aussie destination for a holiday.

        • What’s an average meal in the Maldives cost ?

          • @tomleonhart: Depends on the location. In Male, at a local's place, not a heap, a few USD. But at a resort, lots more. Around 30USD-80USD for a mains

    • Not sure that is how exchanging your money works.

      • +1

Everything there is still expensive plus you have to pay with USD.

    • Depends where you go, on Maafushi I found a local workers restaurant. Curry, Naan, juice and a bottle of water for $2.50usd. All you can eat beachside BBQ was about $20usd.

10hr boat trip to swim with nurse sharks, manta rays, lunch on a sand bank and local island tour was a mere $40usd.

I haven’t been to the Maldives, but I reckon you’d be as bored as batshirt after 2 weeks there…

Also, check what the visa requirements are (if you intending to stay longer than what a holiday visa allows).
