A free tip for people trying to trade in an older model with a $0 trade in value. For a brief moment when you're clicking through from selecting the model a green continue box appears in the lower portion of the screen. Click it and you'll be able to proceed through the process and collect the JB voucher with no trade-in voucher.

@blues99: I've managed to do this, I've put my IMEI in and now I get this message when asking to verify my ID:

Please scan QR barcode with your smart phone to start
Identity verification barcode not created so please try again OR use SMS option.
Keep page open until identity verification completed
To retry ID Verification. Click Retry

When I click Retry i get a message saying: Please complete ID Verification.

            • @CheapWrangler: Same for me

@ramanan: click on page 4 and read Generalkey's post, I got it to work by following him.

Credit received on a S9+ with $0 trade in value

Hopefully my CC will only be charged $0 when I don't send it to them

    • cheers. Any issue when you dont send anything back considering its worth $0?

      • +2

I guess they will charge your cc with $0 :)

      • +2

I'll send the old phone to them. They're paying postage and I get to feel self satisfied knowing it's probably not going to landfill. We all win.

        • -1

          I'll take your old phone.

        • Have you sent the phone? What's the status of the transaction on SquaretradeUp?
          Thanks

    • +8

Also to the front end developers of this website… for shame.

    • It says invalid IMEI number:(
edit: I think it only works with newer phones that have physical damage.
It does not work with older models regardless of their condition because they are outdated and their IMEI number will not be verified.

      • For some reason my Nokia 2.2 works under the IMEI of Nokia 2

        • I tried a different model but had no luck. Oh, it works with pixel 3 although it's pixel 2.

    • Does this really work?? I mean doesn't the value need to be at least $10 to be eligible for $500 bonus credit? How would you get the bonus with 0 trade in value?

      • You receive the coupon automatically via email, just did it myself. Now I won't be surprised if the order gets cancelled rather than fulfilled but we'll see.

        • +1

just went in store to pickup new phone!! better to pickup in person if you are paranoid like me

        • Interested to see if they'll charge you $500 from you CC later..

          • +2

@Leedian: Squaretrade just confirmed my order. No additional charge on my cc

    • Thank you so much!

If any of you are having trouble catching the button, here's a way to make it show up:
      - Open the 'developer tools' window of your browser. Right-click anywhere, select 'inspect element'; or press F12 on Chromium-based browsers.
      - In the developer tools window that appears, click it anywhere (to focus on it), then press Ctrl/Cmd+F to start a search. (Make sure this find window is inside the developer tools window and not the main browser window.)
      - Search for "addToCart" (with the quotation marks).
      - One element should be highlighted in the developer tools window.
      - Inside the highlighted element, look for style="display: none;".
      - Change it to: style="display: block;" by double-clicking it.
      - The green 'continue' button should now appear. You can click it and be on your way!

(This is basic CSS and basically "unhides" that button.)

I can't checkout cos "Identity verification barcode not created" and there's not sms option

    • Getting rid of my old phones for $500 vouchers! ty!

    • It says invalid serial number for my samsung tab A
      After offering $50 value

    • Yeah, I think they must of "fixed" it. I can adjust the page to remove "display: none" for the line that has the "contact" button. It still asks for an IMEI and then the process requires going through ID if you have a good IMEI. Not sure how or when you get the trade-in bonus then or how you can get it with an otherwise good phone of zero value.

Have you managed to get through the process without doing the ID and following through as if you are doing a trade-in proper?

      • Last time the ID setup didn't work, so I got a code sent otherwise. This time, mucking around with the webpage source at client end got things to work with a zero trade in value. The email come through with the codes, clicked on each code, got multiple coupons….

Keep an eye out for an early "special" before the codes run out, perhaps apply the coupon once further discounted.

When I bought an S21 Ultra with the code, they wouldn't accept that later that same day before midnight it was discounted by $500 or was it $600? … so they wouldn't do their price fix [lower price within 7 days, refund or credit the difference] for me. An S22 Ultra 512GB for $1,349 today (using the $500 code) and zero value trade-in is not bad, but I don't need any extra mobiles right now.

Probably won't use any of the codes, but it was fun playing the game.

        • As others have said, the "specials" for yesterday are gone, that $1,849 is now back to $2,149 … perhaps there will be discounts again to use with the coupon in time.

    • If I have a oneplus 7T and oneplus 5? I cannot find Oneplus in the list of brands. Can I still get the voucher?

    • Well done for spotting this. New phone in hand :)

    • Seems like they've fixed it. After I click the CONTINUE button and enter the IMEI, I get a "Sorry, zero amount order is not allowed" message

    • Have anyone got a $0 trade-in value transaction completed? Auspost delivered my parcel yesterday, but the status on square-trade now is still "Waiting For Order To Arrive"
      Thanks.

      • did they charge you for the bonus $500?

        • No updates yet. My order status is still "Waiting for order to arrive".

        • I like note 20 ultra as well. I used it for over a year, was bought for only $700 refurbished, sold for $490+500, for old refurb not a bad price :)

Worth the upgrade from the S21?

    • it offers $350 for a very good condition of S21. So to obtain this, it would be $549-350=199 after $500 JB coupon. Am I right?

      • +3

That's how I read it. The $500 is a bonus on top of the trade in value.

      • ugh I just bought it too…but $850 for a phone I paid around $480 for…

        • +5

Only thing putting me off is that battery of s22 is worse than s21 I believe

          • +2

@bdl: The battery of the second-hand S21 might have less capacity than the S22, depending on how much you've used it.

            • +1

@Bing bot: FWIW I was very worried about the S22 battery, so far it hasn't been too bad. Sometimes I give it a little top up around lunch time to get me through the day, normally it is pretty drained by around 8PM. Really depends on how long you need it to go for. If you absolutely need an all day phone and you hammer the SOT, then it might not last you.

              • +3

@webkit: That doesn't sound promising… Might be ok if the phone was 2 years old… Not months old.

              • @webkit: If anyone really need bigger battery, can just upgrade to the 22+. Although thats also a bit worse than the 21+

                • @fuzor: These phones are aweful. They make us pay more for a worse product. With less hardware.

      • im considering doing it 😲

      • +1

A $500 coupon yes but you still need to put $500 on the table.

    • +3

Very minor differences, and a lot of effort to switch phones as well as the $199. Not worth it for most people, but some like the new car smell.

      • I was going to do it but I might agree with you here. The trade in value between the S20 and S21 is $100, so if I take this offer and do it again next year, given it's a $200 upgrade, I'd be $100 worse off. Might as well wait for something that'll be a decent upgrade.

      • +1

I'm also hoping the amount of crap that people were giving Samsung for the weak battery in the S22 may mean that the S23 has a better battery

        eg: https://www.reddit.com/r/samsung/comments/u97jqo/hot_take_s2…

  • How to get $500 discount without trade in

    • You can’t

    • +2

Wondering the same. Was going to jump on this as I'm due for a new phone but they say my current one is worth $0 but this is supposed to be $500 on top of the trade in value. I don't care if I get $0 for the trade in, just give me the $500 bonus and you can have the old phone. Unfortunately can't do it online. Going to see what pops up on Prime day next week and if nothing there will visit a few JBs and see if they're willing to do it in person. Probably not but you don't know if you don't ask.

      • Thinking same 🤷🤣

      • +1

Literally the same thing here, trying to work out what the cheapest thing I can buy on the second hand market thats worth 'something' on there to make it eligible but i'm on the fence whether it's worth the hassle of the run-around.

      • +1

In the FAQ down the bottom it says you need a trade in value of $10+ I believe. To be eligible for the $500 bonus credit.

        • Can I trade in something and not send it ?

          • +4

@Michael1983: Yes. They will then charge your credit card for the trade in value + $500.

            • +1

@capslock: What if you use a prepaid credit card with only $100 on it? lol

            • @capslock: on the FAQ it says only the trade-in value

“If our Returns Centre doesn’t receive your device(s) within 14 business days, we will either cancel your Trade-in Credit from JB Hi-Fi or charge your credit card the equal amount if the trade-in credit has already been redeemed.”

            • @capslock: Unless they've changed how it works, last time I did this with Square Trade in they didn't charge me anything, because I only used the $500 discount code, but not the pittance credit that they gave me for my phone.

              • @webkit: How long ago was that? Considering not sending my S8 given it's $0 trade in value.

EDIT: after reading the T&C (which brings new meaning to fine print, I had to zoom 1000% in order to read it yet the rest of the document was normal at 100%) they only mention charging the trade in value if the phone isn't returned. The pre authorisation charge that's appeared on my card is also $0 so I think it's safe. Of course I still won't be surprised if the order gets cancelled.

            • @capslock: That's not a bad idea if they give you bad trade in value

            • @capslock: They won't charge you the $500 bonus coupon, ONLY the trade in value if you used the coupon. I've done it before.

            • @capslock: how do you know they will charge the bonus $500?

        • I got the $500 bonus credit last time and didn’t send the phone. They only charged the phone trade-in value.
However they have stopped from trading in again today because of the non-return.

      • i asked them, they wouldn't do it

        • Can you please clarify what they "wouldn't do"?

          • @King181: They would not just let you take the BONUS $500 credit - you actually had to tyrade in something, even if it was just worth $10, to get the bonus

  • Hey op how does it work with the trade in? You sign up and trade in your item and send the item off? When do you get the voucher? Thanks

    • +1

I redeemed it instore today. You go through all the steps through the trade in online, they send you the value of the item (I got $50 for a tab s2) they then send another email with the voucher redemption and you select which one you are going to use, depending on what you are purchasing. You click on that and they send the relevant voucher code. You then have 7 days to send the item. If they don't receive it in 14 days then you will get charged for it all on the credit card info you had to supply. Follow the instructions on sending the item back. It is free to send it in, you just need to pack it securely so it doesn't get damaged in transit. Make sure the $500/$250 voucher is used BEFORE the credit value for the item.

      • +1

How much do you get charged though? The phone trade in value or Trade in value + $500 credit?

        • not sure, but do you really want to take that chance? The wording is they will debit the value of the trade-in, so I would assume just the trade in value, but I am not taking the chance. I'm sending in a Tab s2 as we just got an S8 and even Samsung wouldn't give anything for it. My S9 phone is too old and doesn't qualify, but that is fine as I am happy to use that as back up phone and give my old s5 to charity (for domestic violence survivors who need something)

          • @souths123: They can't debate the value of the trade in as they email you a receipt showing the value of the trade and it doesn't include the $500 bonus credit.

      • +1

Do the Tax invoice comes up with the actual price of the phone or the price after deducting the trade in + Bonus credit?

        • the invoice I received on my JBHIFi account shows the amount after the $500 bonus has been taken off, but before the trade in value is. I got the S22 256GB, so it is showing as $1149 crossed out and $649 price of the handset.

      • it says "Cannot be used in conjunction with any other coupon" but you can use $500 voucher with your tradein value (another voucher, maybe?)

        • the $500 is a coupon the trade in is a gift card value, but they have to enter the $500 first, otherwise it stuffs it up

          • @souths123: got it, maybe it's better to do it in store.lol
also i have a rare issue, that my phone is oppo reno 5g, which is the 5G version of the oppo reno 10xzoom (identical design), but on their website, it shows RENO Z 5G, there is NO such model from oppo ever. i also tried to input my IMEI, it went through. i think that is a typo.

not a fan of samsung, but it's a good deal if i can get it half price.

          • +1

@souths123: can i use normal jb gift card to pay the remaining? i mean trade in gift card+ $500 voucher+ whatever left with JB gift card.

            • +1

@ce5himm: yep, I just did that, paid with $500 gift card (on discount of course) + reminder on cards

      • "Make sure the $500/$250 voucher is used BEFORE the credit value for the item." why?

        • because they have to do it in that order to work. They didn't with my order and had to redo the whole thing. It is just their system…in store anyway. Not sure about the website

  • +2

    Great success!

  • How does one actually get $500 discount?

  • +1

I don't understand how this works. My S20fe trade in come $210+$500? That would be more than what I paid for the phone. How is it possible?

    • Samsung had something similar last year, i think more ridiculous as well

    • +6

Most people are not good consumers, they sit on the $100 per month contracts and keep rolling over to new model phones.
Smartphones are actually pretty good value if you wait just a few months after launch, especially if you only buy them once evey 2-3 years.

  • +2

This is actually insane, says i can get 250 for my S20FE.

    So $230 for it.

Do you guys think its worth the updgrade?
Im gonna miss my SD card.

    • +1

Sounds too good to be true.

      • -1

Its rip off. Because the s20 has more utility than the s22. Sdcard bigger screen. Unless playing heavy games you wl have same software experience so why spend for no reason?

    • +2

No. You are paying more to get a smaller screen and no SD card.

      • +1

Besides that, almost all the specs are better

        • +1

          Is it $300 better?

      • +1

Some people actually prefer the smaller screen.
Also it's a better quality screen, better processor, way better fingerprint sensor, I'm sure there's more…

    • +1

You can get a lot more for a S20FE

  • Anyone know/ can confirm if S22 in Australia is running Snapdragon or Exynos please? This will make or break it for me.

Ignore me, JB hifi products page confirms its a Qualcomm snapdragon

    • +2

      S22 is snapdragon in aus.

      • thank you, going to trade in my Z flip 3 for a s22 after I traded my s21 in for Z flip 3 last year. Will wait 8 more days to see if Samsung has one of those crazy deals again

        • -2

You like spending money don't you.

    • snapdragon?

well i guess im doing this deal

    • What's wrong with the Exynos? I haven't had any problems with it

      • +1

50% slower in some worst case scenarios, I think plenty videos on YouTube

      • much slower than the qualcomm counterpart, had it on my s21 last year. doesn't compare to Qualcomm

    • Even for the base s22??

      • yes thats the model's product page I looked up. in 'details' at bottom of base s22 page

  • +3

Anyone found the cheapest phone I can buy to use as a trade?

I have 2 pixel 3s, one that works that I can get $50 for
But the other is worth $0 so won't work with this deal (I do want 2 new phones though)

    • yeah thinking the same. just need something to be worth $10 trade in value

    • I think just don't send phone and they charge you 50 for that non sent phone on your case

  • -3

$0 trade in if my mobile phone,,,, no deal.

    • Plus $500 gift card?

  • +2

They are giving $100 credit for samsung tab a which was purchased through optus deal.

    • Are you sure about that? I can't see the A8 listed.

  • -4

    no microsd, i'm good

  • -2

can we just don't return the phone and pay the trade in value of the phone like what people used to do with Samsung?
or what will happen to your old phone if you face an issue and decide to return the s22?

  • I've just checked my wife's S21+ 256GB model, and it says "YOUR DEVICE TRADE-IN VALUE $500 JB Hi-Fi Trade-in credit".

Does this mean we get $500 trade in for the phone, plus another $500 on top of that to use towards a new phone, so effectively $1K towards a new phone?

    • +3

      yes

      • Thanks for confirming.

    • +1

yes, just remember the price on the phone is only for today as they are matching the Telstra Day deal

      • What's JB's normal price for the S22 range?

        • +1

same as everyone else, but today matching Telstra Day 128gb $1049 256 $1149….I think anywhere else they are at least $200 more expensive (bricks and mortar)

        • +1

          $1249/$1349 for 128GB/256GB (RRP).

  • Excellent deal - $50 better than the pre-order bonus when I got it.

  • Wonder what they do with the old phones..

    • +2

Goes to SquareTrade for refurbishing if it's in the condition you claimed.

      • I think they sell it to third world countries at a profit.
