          • @kerfuffle: I simply love the case that completely covers the glass back on my Pro.

        • +5

The fact anyone puts glass on a product that is carried around, shoved in pocket, bag, dropped… Seems such a mad design choice to me

          • +1

@cook99: Agree I preferred the lighter weight of the pixel 5, the glass on the pixel 7 is bloody slippery, adds weight and just a fingerprint magnet. Annoying that they just try and copy apple.

Once you put a case on can't even see it anyway and you'd drop it pretty easily without a case.

  • +2

Very tempted by this… Or should keep my pixel 5 for 6 more months….

    • If it was me, I'd look somewhere else after the P5. The last Pixel with great battery life, a fingerprint sensor that works, reliable software, and it stays cool. The P7a also has thicker display bezels.

      • +1

I will never get why people like fingerprint sensors at the back. Best case scenario if you want a physical one, is at the side

        • +8

The finger is naturally at the back when holding the phone so less movement needed to get to the sensor.

          • +1

@ddhar: My fingers NEVER naturally sat around the fingerprint area, and i guess most people's too.
There's a reason it's going extinct and there's a reason they wanna perfect the under display sensors.
If fingers naturally sat there, everyone would do it and there would be no need for under display sensors.

            • @nikoris: My right index finger naturally sits near where rear fingerprint sensors usually are. I had an LG with a rear mounted sensor and found it great.

That said, while I like rear mounted over under display for speed and reliability, I agree that side (falling under thumb) is probably the best compromise — my old s10e could even pull the notification tray up and down by swiping on the sensor, which was super convenient for one-hand use.

          • -1

@ddhar: LG phones I miss that fingerprint at the back and pixel 5 also has it on the back. Most natural placement else you need two hands or wrap around your thumb to be on display sensor. Index finger on the back works best

      • Yeah Pixel 5 still the best google phone ever. Not changing mind yet

    • +2

      Keep the Pixel 5!

  • -4

Pixel 7 or 7a? What are the main differences?

    • +10

      The letter A

    • price as a starting point …

    • +15

Have you tried taking 5 seconds to google a tech spec difference?

  • +2

This a good upgrade over the 4a? Was planning to wait till the end of the year to upgrade but starting to re-think my timing.

    • +3

At this point you may as well wait for the 8 IMO. Though this will still be a decent upgrade, yes.

    • +2

I'm in the same boat… just shy of 3 years on the 4a however i've busted the power button clicker (hard press, no feedback) and a small crack in the screen across the front camera. If it wasn't for those issues, I'd hold on for longer as the 4a is still a great device.

    • If you're not a heavy user who needs the extra power or camera it might be worth upgrading.
My wife has the 4a but she only uses it for surfing the net and taking some photos so I think I'll wait for the Pixel 8a next year before upgrading her phone

    • The 4a is the last phone to have free Google Photos uploads.

The convenience of not having to pay another annual subscription is enough for me to keep the 4a for at least another year.

      • The 5 is the last for free GP Uploads.

Repurpose an old pixel as a means to maintain free uploads if you want :)

        • Free what?
Everyone reckons the pixel 1 is the free unlimited full quality photo backup.

Anyway 100gb doesn't cost much and I've never filled up more than half really.

          • @G-rig: P5 is the last gen offering free High quality uploads to google photos

P6 and beyond counts towards your Google Drive (G-One) capacity, which eventually will fill up and require a subscription cost to maintain

If you have a Pixel 5 or older, you can put photos on it and itll still be free (yes not original quality at 30+MP quality but if you really want that, use a NAS anyway)

            • @Jay-rad: Fair enough, can't keep an old phone forever but I did consider keeping it as a spare. Usually just sits there and good putting it towards the new phone.

You're going to have to pay for storage one day.. turkey VPN isn't expensive at all, but I haven't gone down that route, paying $2.50/ month. 15GB isn't nearly enough anyway.

Ps. no idea why people are going on about the pixel 1 and storage then.

              • @G-rig:

You're going to have to pay for storage one day

I paid for a lifetime plan with pCloud but I wouldn't use them for photos. I also once got the free 1TB plan with Google Drive so I filled that with archive stuff. The 1TB is still free and I can read and download from it but I can't add any more data to that account.

Ps. no idea why people are going on about the pixel 1 and storage then.

The original Pixel and XL offer free full quality backups for life. P5 and earlier offer free Storage Saver backups for life. The compression that comes with storage saver is fine with me.

        • @Jay-rad

The 5 is the last for free GP Uploads.

Actually you're right. August 20 2020 vs October 15 2020. Pretty close but the 5 is last.

Repurpose an old pixel as a means to maintain free uploads if you want :)

I looked into this a while ago and it looked like something that was going to require extra time either running a process or checking that it's working correctly. I just want the simplest solution. Unless you have a rock solid automated suggestion.

    • Went from 3a to 7a, great upgrade imo. SO Easy to cutover if you use Google for most, literally log into your account and it auto-does everything. Cleanest smoothest phone upgrade I've done (iphone 14max recently was a nightmare)

Watched all reviews of P7 vs 7p vs 7a and the changes are so minimal just get whichever has what you need

I want Bluetooth 5.3 2-way stereo using a mic hopefully coming to Android LC3 codec with Android 13.

  • All the recent deals taught me Pixel models prior to 6 can use magic eraser

    Therefore no need to upgrade

    • What's magic eraser

    • +2

'Magic Eraser' is just a lazy man's Photoshop or paint.net stamp tool, seriously not worth buying a phone over. I have a 7a and it really only works well in cherry picked scenarios where there isn't a prominent shadow cast by the object being removed, and there isn't more than a solid colour (e.g. painted wall) behind said object.

      • +2

Average Joe doesn't know how to use photoshop let alone paint.net

Also it's much convenient on the phone and get done on the fly and save as copy. Plus using AI to fill the gaps which is a nice touch

Pixel 8 Pro, may have a flat display.

    Amazing.

    • -2

And it might feature a rechargeable battery too

      • +1

        This makes no sense.

        • -1

You mean like flat display? Been trying to figure out how non-flat current pixel screens are… if they really aren't flat enough..

  • Any reason why post has Charcoal only when I get believe deal is applicable to all colours?

  • +5

I'm tempted to switch over from apple at these prices, literally half the price for a flagship phone

    • +8

7A is not flagship it's upper mid.

  • +1

128gb and no sd slot :/

Does the usb-c to 3.5mm adaptor process the sound or is this still using the same digital to analogue chain as the phone?

    • Similar to the Apple dongle, any USB-C to 3.5mm adaptor should be a DAC (otherwise you wouldn't be hearing any music). Any phone with an inbuilt 3.5mm jack has an internal DAC.

      • Ok. So adaptors are not all created equal :( What's a good one?

        Currently using a dying lg v30 :(

    • Google phones historically havent had SD card slots since the original Nexus AFAIK - I know the Nexus 4 nor the 5X had one, and none of the Pixel's have had a slot either - if you desperately need access to a SD card, you could always use a USB-C sdcard adapter that supports OTG like https://www.leefco.com/products/leef-access-c-microsd-reader

      • +1

That'd be good… But i need that port for my headphones!

  • we can choose the other two colours for same price, right?

  • no instore purchase only online

  • Note the phone doesn't come with a charger so if your new to the pixel world you may not get the same fast charge experience with another brand etc

  • I went in store and enabled 90hz display on the 7a to compare with the 7.

I found that when vertical scrolling through various websites, the 7 looked significantly smoother than the 7a. Not sure if demo mode caused issues there so really keen to see if anyone can provide any feedback on this?

  • +5

Would it be a viable strategy to create a chain of people who each use the person before's $150 gift card

    • The OZB way

    • I'll buy someone's gift card for $100, then I'll sell my gift card for $100.

Also use the 8% off gift card to bring the cost of the phone down to $529 for each person.

  • +2

I just got my pixel 7a today bought it from last edu promo. Still cant register my fingerprint, hardly to recognise my finger. Its one of the problem that people talking on the net.

Got cheap case from this guy https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0C141CTZG and I like it. Currently 20% off. It just FYI.

    • Thanks. Ordered the case.

    • Weird. My setup from P3a to P7a was so smooth I'd buy another one just to do it again.

This guy registered both thumbs with no problem

My only complaint was that the P7 and special case were just tossing in the packaging, not secure at all… Seems a little mis-handled to not atleast add some Eco Bubblewrap-type thing to lock it down. Was your's packed securely?

  • Haha, I knew holding out an extra couple days would pay off. Bought. I assume the voucher is emailed at some point after purchase?

No idea what I'll spend it on, but bonus

    • +2

I was wondering this, so that if I was to buy 2 - one after the other - I could at least use one of the $150 vouchers for the second one?

      • Oh dang, that's an awesome idea

        • But if it's sent a week or two later, that plan won't work.

  • 5% off JB gift card via work discounts.
10% TRS for next month's overseas trip.

    Replaces my S21.

Sounds like a no brainer to me. Thanks OP!

    • Is this an upgrade from a s21 5g?

      • yeah that's what I'm thinking. S21 is a 2 year old phone, so if I can flog it on market place for $400 or so I'd say i've upgraded at NIL cost to me. That's what I'm thinking at least.

      • +1

Not really. An s21 5G still getting software updates. You are comparing a flagship to an upper mid range phone

        • Hah, I guess I'll just have to see how I play this out, couldn't resist my trigger finger. You're probably right, hope I don't regret the move.

    • how come you didnt use 8% Gift Cards?

  • Anyone think there will be better EOFY sale deals on this or Pixel 7?

    • +1

Maybe Pixel 7, not this I think as long as you have use for the gift card.

  • +1

Great deal. Just placed an order and comes out to $470 using the 8% discounted gift card and allowing for the $150 JB card bonus.

    • +2

I bought the ultimate gift card with the 8% off and received the card number and 3 digit CVV - however JB Hifi website asks for an 18 digit gift voucher and 4 digit pin.

Any idea how you managed it?

edit: had to put the card details in the debit/credit card section and not the gift card section.

      All sorted!

      • Hi OP, how long does it take to receive the ultimate gift card by email ?

        • Few mins, just did the whole shebang in about 15min

And anyone know if i can claim s tax deduction purchasing the phone via ultimate gift card? I guess the jb invoice would still show a cc no and my name?

      • What did you put in the name on card?

        • Just my name, you should of 'registered' the card and input a few details

  • Anyone know if any similar amazon deals… i have unused amazon gift card monies to use

  • I want to jump on this deal to upgrade from my Oppo A52, but am finding it hard to justify still even at the cheaper price when I only use my phone for random web browsing, the occasional phone call and half a dozen apps. Trying to talk myself into this instead of cheaping out of one of the A series Samsungs.

    • Last year samsung flagship especially the s22 plus would be a better buy if you get one from greengadget

      • Thanks for the advice @ChickenAdobo

  • Pulled the trigger.
Not a bad deal after claiming a tax deduction and have $75 gift cards. Brings it to around $380. The giftcard is a bonus to bring it to $230. Pass this phone to my parents and get maybe the pixel 8 for myself.

  • Good deal and good timing, I jumped on board. I’ve dropped my iPhone XS Max one too many times, the last of which was last night. Back shattered to the point I can see the inside.

  • anyone happen to get their JB gift card already emailed instead of the wait?

  • its a done deal

  • Was looking to upgrade my phone but looking at the specs it seems my Huawei Mate 20 Pro is still largely the better phone apart from older OS and lack of 5g.

Not bad for a 5 year old phone.

    • I've got a Mate 10 Pro and I still think the same as you!

    • Am also thinking what can compare to the Huawei I love to use - still using the P20 Pro

  • Can we buy one, then use the gift card on another. Then use that gift card on another? Looking to buy multiple handsets

  • How do we know we will get the $150 gift card? there is nothing specifying this at the checkout?

    • Choose store pickup says you get your card when you pickup

      • Didn't get gift card when picked up in store just then

        • did you not ask them why?

          • @paloverde88: Yea I did, they said it would be emailed

            • +1

@Peety117: I ended up buying one as well. The store guy said it will be emailed in 2 weeks.
