        that's 7 seater petrol car …

        this is ev

    • +24

We really can't tell if this is sarcasm or not :D

      • And I also can't tell if the neggers are Mahindra fans or it's the opposite. So to those who voted neg, care to explain?
I think the comment is funny and doesn't deserve to be hidden.

  • +104

    This is the RRP..

    • How much driveaway

      • 41k add in no ev sub

    • +10

I thought this comment was reserved for jv

      • +1

        This is the RRP..

        • +3

          Ditto. No bargain.

    • +16

Yeah, but almost half the price and half uglier than Tesla. Plus you don't need to worry about kids messing up the interior, it's already pre messed up. Perfect for city drive with a least amount of money for EV.

$39K is a good deal for EVs, but it should be better, although this will affect the Tesla market share, hence it is a good deal.

      • +6

        I'd debate that,

        Tesla is definitely better looking.

        • +5

You can debate all you like with your fellow Tesla owners, but for me, it is just butt ugly, maybe 10 years ago when it first came out, it was okay with a simplistic design, but now, nah. At least BYD got some bold interior concepts. Even the interior is boring in Tesla.
Unfortunately, Tesla is the best out there when it comes to EVs.

          • +1

@boomramada: I'd also go the MG4 over the BYD as well.

Better looking and on paper personally.

            • @Drakesy: That's what I've gone for. Taking ownership in September.

          • @boomramada: I really like the Tesla interior. Especially the white one. I don't know why, because I'm not really a fan of minimalism when it comes to anything else. But I do like futuristic looking things, and in the case of the Tesla that wins out.

            • @MrMcHairyHead: If you drive one for a few weeks, the interior design is very logical and practical and well engineered .. not minimalist at all

              • +1

@matt-ozb: I drove one the other day and I like it, but I don't know how you can say it's not minimalist. It's definitely minimalist. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

                • +1

@MrMcHairyHead: Yea, I didn't word that very well … not sure what I was trying to say .. other than after driving for a few weeks, it is really well designed that you don't need any extra buttons.

But, yes, if there is a crappy touch screen quality, poorly designed UX interface on the touchscreen, inconvenient cruise control operation, etc etc .. then you would need some extra buttons to make it easy to operate.

Can never forget a late model Subaru touchscreen … responsiveness was crap … the frequently used buttons on the screen were tiny and infrequently used buttons on the screen were huge .. i think the UX Engineers were drinking too much alcohol when they created that software design.

      • +2

        you forgot the following
        cameras + dashcam standard
sentry mode - captures everything on camera if you're away from your car
super fast charging, sometimes free depending on location
autopilot is amazing even the free one
IU is beyond any other car ive ever driven including new BMWs
        constant updates
great service, including them coming out to your house
        great part availability

also model y is the best selling car atm

It wont affect the market share at all, they are two completely different cars
one is budget the other is premium

        • +1

What most people don't realise is Tesla is more of a technology company than a car manufacturer. Their cars are basically tech gadgets, so their expertise has never been in making a perfect car but that's easier to solve by hiring car manufacturing experts. They're getting there. Either way Tesla remains a technology company.

        • +2

Are you forgetting, this is a 40k car, compared to a 65k car, and the deal with the biggest vote is still the $2 cashback deal from tightass.

        • autopilot is amazing even the free one
I have driven a few Tesla's (quite a bit) and the "Autopilot" is honestly no better than the radar cruise / lane keep assist in the VW Tiguan ive had for the last month.

great service, including them coming out to your house - The 2nd part is true, as to great service, not really
great part availability if you call 2 months wait for a replacement tail light (warranty repair) is great then, yes, you're right.

    • +8

What about the 10000000 PS5 and Switch 'deals' that get posted here.

    • This model prices from 22k- 27k in China. From 40k here? haven't check the spec yet but the price has almost doubled.
Ugly for sure, and the driving range could be 40% shorter than it claimed when the temp is below 20 degree Celsius.
Should import more Chinese EV brands like GMW, Aion and Chang'an to shoot the price down.

      • +3

This model prices from 22k- 27k in China. From 40k here?

Cost of living, rent, taxes, and wages much higher than in China? Plus need to ship the damn thing here as well lol

        • +2

          $15k shipping? I think not.

        • +1

Compare to the price differences of same models from Tesla and Haval between AU and CN, +30% more is fair.
And 40k deserve better design and craftsmanship.

      • How's the tax comparison?

    • +1

But bargain compared to Tesla & when govt EV rebates are applied compared to Toyota

    • So it's only a good deal if they create some inflated RRP and then "discount" it? You must buy a lot of Persian rugs…

  • +49

This is ugly to be fair.

    • +48

i meah yeah…you're not wrong but there's so few actually good looking cars in this price range and even less good looking EVs…

      but…

"The Dynamic (ie. base Dolphin) is powered by a 70kW/180Nm front-mounted electric motor and a 44.9kWh battery pack, good for 340km of claimed driving range in European WLTP lab testing, and zero to 100km/h acceleration in a claimed 12.3 seconds.

For comparison the base-model $38,990 MG 4 has a 125kW rear electric motor, a 51kWh battery, 0-100km/h acceleration in a claimed 7.7 seconds, and 350km of claimed driving range."

on this alone the MG4 has it

also the BYD has a really objectionable name… aint my goddamn dream to drive in an slow EV…

      • +21

You should then go Build Your Dream.

        • +20

I like BYD but that “build your dreams” phrase on the back is so cringe

          • +5

            @WreckTangle: 100% agree.
If I would ever buy a BYD (and I'm not planning on it). I'd remove all the badging ASAP haha

            • @FrugalFranky: You can't do it easily on this model as they've protected it by putting it inside the plastic tail light mould

          • +3

@WreckTangle: Reminds me of the "Chang Hong" brand TVs whose slogan was "Makes easier life".

            Knock-off of LG's "Life's Good"?

          • +10

@WreckTangle: It's not like I built the car at all anyway… I bought it. It's also not my dream, it's a middle-age compromise for when I accept that I won't be rich

Should just say Buy Your Disappointment

        • +5

          It is a ridiculous name

        • They definitely had to come up with that cringe names.
Rather than the Chinese Name of BeeYaDee.

Either way, Ain't voluntarily signing up for a possible surveillance vehicle.
Add MG and Volvo to the list

      • +15

and zero to 100km/h acceleration in a claimed 12.3 seconds.

Wtf my 15 year old ford was faster than that.

        • +4

i'd say the reason for that is…

70kW and 180Nm is really not very good even for a petrol engine of this class

and so if your car is this:

          Curb weight 1,285–1,450 kg (2,832.9–3,196.7 lb)[6]

          then expect 12 secs!

        • +13

Yep would pay an extra $10k and get Atto 3, that has a 0 to 100kph of 7.3 secs.

          • +6

@PerthectDeal: i think i read on a chinese site that they had a shootout with the MG4 vs. Dolphin vs. Ora Cat and the MG4 was a clear winner

            • +1

@tonyjzx: The fastest MG4 is 0 to 100kph in 7.7 seconds. Maybe this pulls ahead at 100kph onwards but that only matters on a track

          • +3

@PerthectDeal: the dolphin premium is the same 7s. extra $5k. ~50k on road in WA might as well wait for the Volvo EX30 at that price.

          • -1

@PerthectDeal: UNNNNFFFFF Daddy, extra 10K for 1990 performance, worth 😩😩😩

            • +12

@ToyotaCrownHybrid: Don't tell anyone, but I have a suspicion this isnt aimed at the performance market

              • +2

@Franc-T: True, but you need to be able to safely pull out on busy streets - you may be waiting a long time to go in this car at the junction near my house where its bolt or die!

                • @Ramrunner:

True, but you need to be able to safely pull out on busy streets - you may be waiting a long time to go in this car at the junction near my house where its bolt or die!

                  This. Absolutely this.

                  • +2

@RichardMelbourne: The 180NM of instant torque will enable you to do this just fine. I bet the 0-60km/h time will be adequate for the city commute.

                    • @Cliche Guevara:

Hard to say: the Tesla Model Y rear-wheel drive has an annoying lag from 0 but the mid-range is fine. The Performance & Long Range Model Y don't have this lag, whatsoever. I don't own one but have test driven them (so I'm reporting from my own experience) and ruled-out the RWD version for this (and the fact that AWD is generally safer).

                      • +1

Could be intentionally nerfed from the factory I feel. They don't want it to compete with faster variants.

                        AWD is generally safer

If you don't drive like a lunatic, RWD is not any less safe. You can still slide in an AWD too but unlike RWD it's very difficult to save it once it starts letting go.

And even if you DO drive like a lunatic, RWD is more predictable at the limits.

                    • @Cliche Guevara:

peak power is only 70Kw, and said peak torque is also too little to actually make a difference even tho it's instant. You will have to wring it most of the time.

the 2.0 NA Kia Cerato for example has 180Nm of torque but its peak power is actually 110KW. The 0-100kmh time is under 10s.

              • @Franc-T: Precisely my point, which is why there's no benefit spending 10K and comparing performance for 2 low performance options.

          • @PerthectDeal: The Atto's interior is ugly as sin though.

          • +1

            @PerthectDeal:

            that has a 0 to 100kph of 7.3 secs

In your daily drive, where can you even put the pedal to the metal for 7.3 seconds?

            • @pjetson: Very good point, so many cars on the road with high performance that are limited by the roads and rules but having performance is great fun on the limited times you do use it.

            • @pjetson: exactly. you aren't buying this to drag race, lmao. no idea why it even matters. speeding tickets are expensive, im trying to save money, lol.

        • Acceleration doesnt matter when thevspeed limiy is 50

        • +1

Your 30 year old Ford should have been faster than that.

      • +3

Plenty are arguing that the build quality on the BYDs are better than the MG. Having experienced only MGs personally this is hardly a feat to behold but will probably explain the same price but less powerful engine. Given theres 10km difference in range, and these aren't made to be race cars, the BYD is likely the better option if the claims of superior build quality is true.

      • +1

At least the BYD owner can claim to own a 12-second car ha ha ha ha

        • BMW M3 owners : same. 0-200kmh in 12 second heh.

    • +5

It's not the best looking car, but hell you're being fussy (we can't all have 10/10 wives cars (even if I think my wife car is 10/10)..)

      • +6

The front is terrible but the back is alright

    • +6

I was thinking, 'how ugly could it be?'

      and then I saw. LMAO

It is the CHEAPEST looking car for me, rather than the ugliest.

THIS is the ugliest for me: BMW 7 Series - https://cdni.autocarindia.com/Utils/ImageResizer.ashx?n=http…

      • +4

Thanks now I have clean vomit off my floor. Dolphin looks fine on the city car attractiveness scale. The Seal looks pretty nice hope we get decent prices here.

        • +1

considering this is double the China price, I'm not holding my breath for anything less on the Seal.

      • I hate their new grilles but that car would look much less objectionable in all black

      • +3

You don't like beaver? All the new BMWs look like beaver teeth to me. I can't unsee it.

    • +2

yea, just get a Rolls Royce instead.

    • +1

I hope the unibrow led light trend eventually gets dropped

    • In my opinion:
      The back looks good.
      The sides look pretty ugly.
      The front looks really ugly.
The MG4 easily wins in terms of looks.
I hope they improve the design of the Dolphin on the next generation.

    • +3

They took inspiration for the front end design off the best car…..pause…..in the world, the Tata Nano.

    • Maldive Purple doesn't help either!

      • The following plate is available in my state:
        MILKA

        Somebody do it!

    • +1

in person theyre actually pretty damn nice lookin, would take one over a corolla anyday

    • It's the MG / Haval market, like they care.

    • not as bad as atto 3. Atto 3 designers took a piss and create an utterly disgusting interior in their drunken session. with dolphin, seems like they sober up

      • I like the Atto 3 interior. It's unusual, but it's also unique. Most car interiors are just variations on the same theme. With the Atto 3 they at least made an effort to do something different.

    • The only EV I like enough - looks wise - over any petrol model is the Audi [RS] e-tron GT. But im not the reserve bank governor so cant justify the expense.

      • I'm still on the fence about the polestar. Looks like from the front, fugly fron the back.

        • Its one of the better looking ones for sure. But Im just mindful Volvo is now China. I dont know if the Polestar is engineering by Volvo euro team or fully Chinese QC and engineering.

          • @Skullytor: Tesla's are also China now for Aus, and the quality shows tbh.

            • @jaygee: But USA engineered and managed right?

To me, its not so much were the factory is - its who does the management and overall design work, engineering and QC. Plenty of good stuff comes from China - usually when companies with a track history own and control the output/

    • -4

      Ugly is personal taste. Eg.
      - Ugly expensive like Tesla, Mercedes,…
      - Ugly waste of space like sedans/Tesla…
      - Ugly black (death) colour on hot Australian sum & night visibility
      - Ugly absence of V2L (Vehicle-to-Load)
      - Ugly charging only via super fast which heats/damages the battery faster (long term)
      - Ugly restriction of choice/options, eg. compact/small as BYD Seagull (I need it ;)
      - Ugly software problems compared to Chinese creativity

      • +1

This is the most annoying comment I've ever read.

    • I bought 7. thanks

    • -1

you don't buy an ev for looks, u buy it to never buy petrol.

  • +5

This is really ugly to be fair.
