Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix subscriptions

Netflix has [very quietly] rolled out a price hike for Turkey and told absolutely nobody about it. I can't even find a single news article about it Well actually I found one lol. Please see the statistics section below for an interesting read. Netflix Turkey (Premium) now has a 264% price increase in just over a year! Luckily, Turkey is still safe from Netflix's Password Sharing restrictions.

Anyway, you all know the drill - new prices = new guide. This guide is the best guide I'm made so far. There are now 3 complete methods to sign up. Please show some love and any comments, concerns, suggestions or feedback are welcome :)

This new guide has now been updated to include:

  • Further clarification regarding the 1-month lockout period for new sign-ups to Netflix Turkey. Please read the FAQ section for further clarification.
  • Further clarification regarding problems related to payment issues that arise a few months after signing up, including steps to take when you encounter the "update payment method" issue. Please read the FAQ section for further clarification.
  • Further clarification and instructions for those who wish to bypass Gift Cards and verify using a Turkish phone number via PingMe (Method 2).
  • Further clarification and instructions for those who wish to reload their account with Netflix Turkey Gift Cards.
  • New Netflix Turkey pricing and new statistics.
  • More screenshots to better guide you through the sign-up process.

Similar to my last post, I'm resharing this guide after previous deal post expired due to a price increase by Netflix. This is the third price hike for Turkey in the period of just over a year.

  • Turkey is definitely no longer the cheapest country for a Netflix subscription on all tiers, after they increased prices multiple times (Example: Premium plan from TL₺54.99 to TL₺77.99 to TL₺93.99 to TL₺130.99 to TL₺199.99 in a span of just over a year). That's a 264% price increase in just over a year!
    • However, obtaining a Turkey-based Netflix Gift Card is extremely easy and effortless, making it the easiest and therefore cheapest country to sign up with.
  • Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans, however, obtaining a Pakistan-based Netflix Gift Card to sign up is almost impossible. Edypt is the next cheapest, but impossible to sign up for the same reason. If you have a bank card locally from these countries, feel free to sign up directly otherwise.
  • NEW Sept 2023!! Netflix Argentina is now ARS1,649 (A$7.40) for the Basic Plan and ARS3,999 (A$17.94) for the Premium Plan (in the last Netflix post, Argentina prices were ARS999 (A$6.10) for the Basic Plan and ARS2,399 (A$14.64) for the Premium Plan). In the post before that, Argentina prices were Argentina prices were ARS699 (A$4.27) for the Basic Plan and ARS1,899 (A$11.59) for the Premium Plan). Despite the Argentina Peso crashing a ton, these new plan prices are extremely ridiculous for these countries. That's a 136% and 111% price increase, respectively, in just under a year! To make matters worse, Netflix Argentina now has the new password sharing feature for additional costs of ARS699 per slot per month.

Instructions – Method #1 (Using Turkey Netflix Gift Cards)

Please read the following instructions carefully. Use this method if you want Netflix to charge your Australian debit/credit card each month OR you would like to use Turkey Netflix Gift Cards moving forward.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation

a. If you currently have an Australian Netflix subscription:

  1. Make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  2. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account. If your payment method is PayPal, remove this immediately and replace it will a debit/credit card.

  3. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, simply cancel your subscription and wait until the end of the renewal period (i.e. keep watching until the sub expires. Don’t let your sub go to waste since you’ve already paid for it). Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2 or Part 3

b. If you DO NOT have a current Australian subscription:

  1. Sign up and subscribe to any Australian Netflix plan (preferably the lowest cost basic plan - don’t worry, you’ll get your money back). Do not use PayPal to sign up, it must be a debit/credit card.

  2. Once you’ve signed up, make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  3. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  4. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, go to Netflix Live Chat and tell them you “would like a full refund since you’ve changed your mind” - they usually don’t ask why but if they do make up some random excuse like “my sibling just signed up” or “you don’t want it anymore” etc. This should be a very fast step and take you only several minutes. The account cancellation will be effective immediately and the refund will arrive in a few hours or days

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before signing up to this deal (i.e. when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership)

  1. Purchase a Turkey Netflix Gift Card (any value is fine, even if it's not enough to cover the full month)

Note: Choose a reputable seller and make an account so you have a record of the purchases if anything goes wrong. I recommend Turgame (I've bought Turkey Apple GC's from there and they have fast delivery (at night time AEST), they charge the same price as the gift card value and the payment gateway fee is very low) or g2a

  2. Once you’ve received your gift card, it’s time to redeem your gift card and sign up to Netflix Turkey at the same time. Make sure from Part 1 that you have not logged out. You must stay logged in to your Australian account. If you’ve logged out, please log back in now with VPN turned off (Logging into your Australian account with a VPN on gives an error)

  3. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/ (recommended, paid)
    Urban VPN: https://www.urban-vpn.com/ (recommended, free)
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/ (recommended, free)
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem 1: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to random serves and therefore random cities of Turkey that will give you the wrong pricing (ideally, you want Istanbul). In this case, keep turning off and on the VPN until it switches to a different server/location. Confirm the location by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/. If this fails, change your VPN provider.

  4. With VPN on, open a new tab and go to the following Netflix site to redeem your gift card See this screenshot:

    https://www.netflix.com/tr-en/redeem

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed

Possible Problem: When redeeming the Turkey Netflix Gift Card, it gives an error (code invalid, etc)
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed. If after several VPNs and this issue still occurs, try to reach out to your place of purchase due to them possibly issuing you an incorrect code

  5. Follow the prompts of the sign up process. This screenshot will show the first page after applying the gift card. Click "Next" to land on this page. Choose the plan you want, then click "Next" to land on the payment page in step 6

  6. Proceed by choosing a backup payment method. Be careful with this step and look at the screenshot!

    • If you did Part 1 instructions correctly then your payment method is already saved within your account - in this case, press "skip this step" at the bottom. On the next page, click "Next" (see screenshot). Now Netflix will want to confirm your details to make sure it is correct as per (this screenshot). Double check, tick the checkbox and start your membership!

    • Otherwise, if for some reason you haven't done Part 1 correctly or your debit/credit card has expired, you will have to add a new debit/credit card (see screenshot). Beward this may prompt you for a Turkey number verification (which I guarantee you don't have otherwise you would have done Part 2) - if this happens, please complete Part 1 again (see fix below)

Possible Problem: After entering your debit/credit card details, it asks for a Turkish mobile number
Possible Solution: Two causes for this. Cause (1): the problem is due to your VPN - Double check or change your VPN if needed, then go back to step 4. Cause (2): This is because you've entered a new debit/credit card. In this case, please click back on your browser and avoid entering a new card by pressing "skip this step" at the bottom. If this option does not appear, please restart Part 1 and ensure you save the card you wish to use as a backup payment.

Possible Problem: My debit/credit cards keep declining, and I'm unable to subscribe
Possible Solution: It's likely the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed and restart the whole process. However, if VPN is not the problem, you can continue to subscribe without a backup payment method (i.e. start your subscription with just the Gift Card you bought), and then afterwards you can contact live chat and tell them you need to update your payment method by asking them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Note: If you bought a gift card that has a higher value than your selected plan, you’ve just used your gift card to pay for the first month, as well as partially for the second month. For the second month, Netflix will deduct the remaining of the gift card, and the remaining balance will come out of the credit/debit card you’ve inputted, and from thereon each month Netflix will keep charging your bank at those rates (be aware many banks like Commonwealth Bank have a small international transaction fee but this is only a few cents extra. Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees). Besides this, you should be saving >$100 AUD each year at least ($200 saving annually for the premium plan)

Instructions – Method #2 (Using your Australian Debit/Credit Card, Requires PingMe App for Turkey SMS Verification)

Please read the following instructions carefully. Use this method if you want Netflix to charge your Australian debit/credit card each month.

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2 or Part 3

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before starting Part 2. It has completely ended when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership

  1. With VPN off, log into your Netflix account

  2. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem: You use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, but it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul.
Possible Solution: You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  3. Open Netflix on a new tab and proceed to Netflix to choose your plan:

    https://www.netflix.com/

  4. Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method.

  5. Enter a Turkish phone number for the SMS verification process.

You can use the service from "PingMe" to obtain a Turkish number for Netflix's SMS verification purposes for just a few dollars. Download the PingMe app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store. Create an account, and recharge with "coins" (credits). 1 coin ($2.99 AUD @ App Store) is enough for 1 Netflix Turkey SMS verification, but you can also buy 5 coins ($10 AUD @ App Store) for the price of 3 in case you need it in the future. After obtaining your coins, click on the "Verification" tab on the bottom of the app and follow this screenshot: select "Netflix" for the App/Website and "Turkey (+90)" for the Country/Region. Proceed as per the PingMe app and use that to validate the Netflix SMS verification process.

  6. You're done! Enjoy your membership :)

Instructions – Method #3 (Using your OlduBil Turkish Virtual Mastercard) - I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS METHOD ANYMORE

Turkey-based Virtual Mastercard Required! If you do not have a Turkey-based Virtual Mastercard, see how to get one here in the instructions section (Part 1 and Part 2). You can use it forever, with many deals to come!

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before signing up to this deal (i.e. when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership).

  1. Log in to your Australian Netflix account, or sign up for an account. Make sure you log in with VPN turned off (logging into your Australian account with a VPN gives an error).

  2. Activate a VPN service, and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/ (recommended, paid)

    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/ (recommended, free)
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Possible Problem: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to random serves and therefore random cities of Turkey that will give you the wrong pricing (ideally, you want Istanbul). In this case, keep turning off and on the VPN until it switches to a different server/location. Confirm the location by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/. If this fails, change your VPN provider.

  3. With VPN on, refresh the main netflix webpage. Alternatively, go to this link:

    https://www.netflix.com/tr-en/

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check and/or change your VPN if needed

  4. Click on "Restart Membership" and follow the prompts of the sign up process. Click "Next and then select the plan you want. Click "Next"and then click "Credit or debit card". Enter your OlduBil Virtual Mastercard details, full name, tick the T&Cs declaration, and then click "Start Membership".

  5. At this stage you're done. Don’t enter anything on this page. Netflix will ask some random questions (just to set up your account). After that, your account will be complete, and you can enjoy your subscription!

FAQ

Q: I just signed up and when I go to watch something I get the following error: "Your account can't be used in this location"
A: New sign-ups to Netflix Turkey is subject to a local restriction lockout. This lockout period will last approximately 28-30 days. During this lockout restriction, you can still watch most shows and movies, but you must use a Turkey VPN to do so (otherwise an error will pop up preventing you from watching anything). You can turn off the VPN after the show/movie has loaded for faster connection. This minor hassle for a month is well worth the savings in the long term.

Q: I just got a "Payment Declined - Update Payment Method" email from Netflix. What do I do?
A: This issue is being reported by many people who have recently signed up to Netflix Turkey. There are two ways to get around this issue:

  1. You can contact Netflix Live Chat and enquire about the "Payment Declined" issue. Make sure you chat with your Turkey VPN activated. If they ask, say you're in Turkey for a holiday, or came up with another excuse. Tell them that your payment has declined and you'd like to add a new credit/debit card. They should (if not, request them to) be able to send a payment form popup directly on the chat so you can add your new payment details. If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one. Once the payment is accepted, the "Payment Declined" issue shouldn't occur ever again.

  2. Log into your Netflix account and update your payment method (Turkey phone number required). When you follow the prompts to update your payment method, Netflix will require a Turkish number. You can use the PingMe service to obtain a Turkey phone number for the purposes of this SMS verification. It will cost you a few dollars to buy credits for the purpose of receiving this SMS.

Q: My current card expired. How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: See the FAQ above.

Q: How do I add Netflix Turkey Gift Cards to my Netflix account?
A: Log in and go to account settings. Click on Redeem gift card or promo code and redeem your Gift Cards there. You should be able to do this without a VPN. If it doesn't work, try with a VPN.

Q: I get an error when redeeming gift cards?
A: This is a VPN problem. Most likely the VPN server has been flagged. Double check or change your VPN if needed. In that rare 1% chance it's not a VPN problem, you may have a troubled gift card.

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move that is only available from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that particular country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN service for this, and most VPN providers should work.

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Netflix subscription, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely!

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Turkey going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: See here. Don't worry, there really isn't any tax you need to worry about.

Yes, despite all the price hikes.

Thanks. I'm still on Turkey subscription.

Tip: Even if you have an enormous TV, modern upscaling is pretty good and the lack of 4K content makes it difficult to justify the premium plan.
I downgraded to HD last year, and no one in my family noticed.
Not saying there isn't a difference, but it's not as big as you might expect. My TV is an 85" Sony and I am generally picky about audio and picture quality, which is likely why I watch most movies via Plex.

    • Did you downgrade to HD (basic) or Full HD (Standard)?

      • +1

        Standard, but good suggestion.

    • +5

I like the HDR, not just the 4K

      • +1

Actually you make a good point, the HDR has a much bigger impact than the resolution, but there is still very limited HDR content. I have noticed Prime have a lot of 1080p content with HDR, shame Netflix doesn't.
I have started using an Amazon Fire Cube, with HDR always, that is offering a decent compromise.
Is the upscaling as good as the Sony? too close to call. Main reason for switching to the Firecube was the responsiveness and remote.

        • Thanks I might just give standard a go base on your suggestion.

        • +2

Everything available on Netflix in 4K HDR is available in 1080p HDR. You're just not seeing it because you dropped your subscription down. HDR is only available on Premium tier.

Netflix have the most HDR/Dolby Vision content out of anyone in the world, and that's not just impressive comparatively. Their library of HDR/DV content is massive.

4K isn't a selling point, other than the increased bitrate, but HDR is literally a night and day transformative technology, and I'm not losing it to save a few dollars after pumping over $7000 into my home theatre.

          • @BradH13: Dolby Atmos+4k is a winning combination, goes great on the Google TV -> Q950A soundbar.

Agree Netflix is the base streaming sub if you could only choose one.

            • @G-rig: You can't hear Dolby Atmos unless you have 2x overhead speakers (one in front and one behind) and are sat in just the right spot. All you are hearing is surround sound and fancy brand names.

              • @illogicalerror: Mate it's clearly better I remember when it first came available.
People saying that probably don't have atmos speakers.

                • @G-rig: As an audio engineer, I can assure you it's just surround sound. Speakers do not make domes of sound in your room or use your ceiling to bounce direction to you. Physics just doesn't work like that.

A full 11.1.4 Atmos speaker setup is one hell of a thing for home studios, but that is another thing.

I'm not trying to bring down your system either, I'm sure it sounds amazing, I'm just challenging the notion that Dolby has somehow defied physics.

                  • @illogicalerror: It's only the Samsung Q950A 11.4 soundbar but noticeably better than the non-atmos version i had before that. A lot of titles support it now so all good.
I'm happy it works well anyway, never said i had a proper atmos separate speaker setup but this is more than fine for streaming and movies etc.

ps. I agree with you somewhat as it sounds like you are talking about the promo diagram that Samsung and others provide showing the sound waves bouncing off surfaces everywhere (which they do to some extent).

                    • @G-rig: I have a high quality 2.1.1 system, I don't bother with rear satellite speakers. The soundbar claims to be 5+ speakers but really it doesn't work like that because they are all in the same place. xD.

Atmos itself is an audio codec though, it isn't speakers. It's an ability that amplifiers can have if given enough speakers. It's a freaking great marketing ploy to sell speakers though, especially if they're good speakers… people will believe it's magical Dolby rather than settling for plain old boring surround sound.

I was reading reviews on the Q950A, looks like a great piece of kit. I never bought a Samsung speaker before. It's good to see more south Korean kit on the market, they make excellent gear on scale like the Japan of old.

                      • @illogicalerror: There you go, surround vs Atmos would be wasted on a 2.1 system. I find it clearer and more dynamic but 5.1 would still be fine.

Yeah no doubt the speakers are a bit better and more of them than my old soundbar. The rears are bigger also and wireless not wired. Soundbar is just easier these days, the rears complete it. Of course separate speakers are better but it's plenty good enough for apartment.

I used to have AV receivers and wired passive speakers, not really interested in it as the codecs go out of date fairly quickly. Anyway was saying with this combo and Atmos 4k streams it sounds pretty good. Still depends on the individual movies which ones are produced and mastered better (similar to audio).

PS I got a separate set up for music (DAC and active monitors).

                        • @G-rig: Yeah, 2.1 doesn't do surround, physics hey. I reckon it's just because your speaker is awesome you are attributing it to Atmos mate. Samsung are the ones who made it that, not Dolby.

4K streams still have the same audio sample rate 48kHz and 24 bit as 720p streams do. Music studios produce in this sample rate, it cannot get any better. We've been listening to it as good as it gets in terms of actual signal for decades. Mastering tools have improved so much though. The financial threshold for who can use the best stuff has disappeared, it's all software now and anyone with a computer and speakers can master. Brave new world.

If you check out audio codecs you'll see it's pretty standard since a very long time, and things like Atmos and Surround are just a containerization of standard codecs so they can add extra channels in one data stream, but the audio quality is exactly the same. The chances are though that is a company has gone to the effort of rendering in Atmos they spent significant time mastering. So it sounds better. It will sound better on all speakers.

I use a receiver and passive speakers in my lounge that also double for music. The L&R came with the receiver and the soundbar and sub came separate. Yamaha stuff. It's pretty good in the price range. I have active speakers in my studio and they're much flatter and much more powerful, they are powered by an outboard DA/AD converter. Some American card, MOTU brand. Seems alright, replaced my M-Audio interface.

Dunno if you ever tried Marantz or BOSE stuff? I tried but I wasn't a believer. Would take JBL or Yamaha over it any day.

                          • @illogicalerror: Yeh all interesting stuff. I don't know what it's all got to do with the best price for Netflix subscription however.

Ofc a 2ch setup isn't the best for movies and surround which is where you benefit in a centre and rears (but would mean needing an AV receiver and and all that), making the most of whichever Dolby or DTS codec you like.

                            • @G-rig: Probably not much to do with Netflix subscriptions. xD

Thanks for listening to my yearning, I love talking about this stuff. Have a great night.

                              • @illogicalerror: Yeah too easy, audio and SQ is a good hobby (and profession for some). Fwiw I still don't use the soundbar for music, got a raspberry pi streamer running volumio going to a RME DAC and Yamaha hs80m monitors and matching sub - all works great.

                                • @G-rig: They're pretty good for the price range. I have HS8's in my studio and an MCR-N670 setup for my lounge L&R. I forget what the soundbar and sub are but they were a little expensive, but definitely still affordable and punching above their class like other Yamaha gear. It's by chance that I find myself with all Yamaha gear at the moment, I'm not a fanbois, but they created the condition of affordable, durable and high quality. Pretty sure I'm not the only one.

                                  • @illogicalerror: Yep it's pretty good stuff for the price. Yeah I've never felt the need to upgrade and having balanced XLR from the DAC to the monitors is pretty clean and easy. Adding the hs8s sub completed the setup and fills in the lower frequencies brilliantly. Only added that after 10y.

Darko audio is a good watch on YouTube, he reviews some lovely gear, a lot of it pretty high end.

Surely I can't be the only one that doesn't care about 4k. I'll watch whatever in whatever and I won't notice the difference, unless I'm particularly looking for a better quality, which is rare

        • I can't think of anything that looked better on 4K apart from 4k movies from a disc. People don't realise that the stuff they stream is bitrate compromised….4k or not. My old 1080p plasma still looks the best and most natural, and that's compared to a premium new Samsung QLED.

          • +3

@mikeb: Watch some 720p movies and you'll appreciate 4k. Ended up deleting all the DVD rips/backups, likewise with the 1080p.

Plasmas were good but hopeless in medium to bright rooms.

    • Noob question - if you plug in an external HD to the TV is that the same quality as Plex or which is generally better?

      • +1

If theyre playing the same files, its 1:1.

      • Assuming the TV can play the file it should be the same.
Biggest driver will be the bitrate and quality of the media you are using.
Plex\Jellyfix\Kodi are more for the easy of use\media management.

    • +1

I’m still on basic and I still don’t feel the need to upgrade

    • +3

I have the premium for the number of screens rather than the resolution.

That'd be right. Only just managed to get my credit card details updated, now you tell me this…..

    Thanks for this post. Excellent

Feeling so ripped off, considering canceling since I don't watch much anymore

    • +2

Rather ironic given you're the one ripping off Netflix by pretending you live in a poor country with a crippled currency (which is the reason why companies keep increasing the price) to get a cheaper rate!

No judgement as I do the same, but Netflix aren't the bad guy in this scenario…

        • Planet Aussie?

        • -1

No one is holding you a hostage. Feel free to pay 10x the AU rate to Netflix if you feel so. Good on you!
Just don't force your decision to others.
Out of curiosity, should richer people pay more for groceries and other goods too?

          • +3

@tm001: And you're the second type of person I hate interacting with online - someone who can't be bothered to actually read the post they're replying to (despite it only being two sentences long) - I wonder if we'll make it a hattrick and have some kind of racist misogynist show up!

People in rich countries do indeed pay more for groceries and other goods which, given they earn more and the cost of producing/selling the goods is higher, seems perfectly rational to me.

If this is a sneaky way of asking whether I agree with Netflix's strategy of charging people in poor countries less than those in rich countries - yes. Yes I do. They couldn't sustain the business if everyone was paying Turkish prices, and people in Turkey would struggle to pay Australian prices. Charging the market rate in each country instead of a global flat-rate seems perfectly logical to me.

            • @callum9999: It might be “perfectly rational” if you’re Australian. It’s anything but if you are Turkish. Rich countries exploit poorer countries, and there’s nothing rational about any of it

              • @tharlow: Huh? You think Netflix offering its subscription service in Turkey for a lower price than other countries is bad for Turkish people?

Obviously rich countries exploit poor countries - just like you do. I didn't make any claims about that at all, but how is that not "rational"?

            • @callum9999: Its anticompetitive though. Traditionally the music companies loved to charge more for Australian CDs because they realised there were a lot less entertainment options over here.

No other industry besides tech/IT has the option of differential pricing. Its not like Australia can offer to sell its coal at a different price to the Netherlands than Nepal, since it is straightforward for any country to obtain physical commodities at the lowest possible price.

For that reason I have no compunctions whatsoever about circumventing regional lockouts - and I believe that the ACCC views the practice positively as well.

          • @tm001: Ofcourse!

        • So rich that people whinge about grocery prices.

      • +2

Just saying I feel the value isn't there for me, some months I watch nothing on netflix but keep it because its been about 2 coffees.

        • Urgh, I really need to stop reading comments on the internet. This feels like the tenth time this week I've questioned someone only for them to reply "I actually meant something completely different to what I wrote". You didn't say that at all - you said you "feel so ripped off".

          Rant over!

          • @callum9999: Ripped off is a degree of poor value IMO

            • +2

@reactor-au: "Ripped off" specifically means you're being cheated, not that it's "a degree of poor value".

              • +2

@callum9999: I disagree, its common speech in my area to call overpriced items a "rip off".

Also, his 'feelings' probably arent influenced by the real meaning; he might be completely wrong and still feel ripped off.

                • @MasterScythe: Weird - what area is that?

You're very right though - it doesn't matter whether they're right or wrong if they're just describing how they feel.

                • @MasterScythe: Yeah, but saying someone getting this deal is 'ripped off' by Netflix is still an insane thing to say when they're cheating Netflix into getting an up to 48.5% immoral discount (I do too, no judgement to those who do, but it's not 'right' and we're not entitled to it).

We're the one doing the ripping off. Not Netflix here.

Not finding value, even at a discounted rate, is legitimate. But you're not being 'ripped off' in any sense of the meaning of that phrase.

Netflix minimise their tax in Australia by basing majority of operations in a low taxing country. I minimise what I pay for Netflix by basing my payments through Turkey. I concede that Aust does miss out on GST but don't feel bad about it (my PAIE covers a lot)

        • LOL I love that argument.

        • No it doesn't… It did, but it doesn't now. So you're going to switch back to Australian Netflix? No - thought not….

I've already said that I do the exact same thing you do so don't judge it. Don't try and pretend like it's the ethical thing to do though…

          • @callum9999: They have said that they will pay more tax, but the tax that they pay in Australia is still a pittance compared to the revenue they make out of Australians. They are still minimising their tax bill! So they can FO for all I care. I just wish that I could do this with other multinationals that do not pay equitable tax in Australia.

            • @Matt88: They have changed their company structure so all revenue from Australia is taken by the Australian subsidiary, not the Netherlands. If they're increasing the amount of tax they pay, how is that "minimising their tax bill"?

While it feels weird that, by correcting you, I'm effectively defending a tax system I despise, I just cannot believe that this is a calculated act to "protest corporate taxation" and not just a way to save money. Not least because, as you yourself have pointed out, you're dodging tax to do so - I assume you aren't donating the tax you've dodged to the government?

And because people (not aimed at you!) often can't be bothered to read properly, I will again reiterate that I use Netflix Turkey and so make no moral judgement on anyone else who uses it.

Netflix Turkey (Premium) now has a 264% price increase in just over a year!

Still not as high as one-day 600% increase on PS Plus.

    • No way omg :((

      • Annual price went from around 400 Lira to 2340 Lira

    • that's what we called mega inflation

  • Again!

  • +1

This increase from 7bucks to 11 is quite steep percentage wise.

might have to sacrifice the interface, cancel Netflix all together and roll with real debrid kodi…

    • Any reliable add-ons? Exodus was my fav until last year and I gave up after most new movies not loading from time to time

      • Fen, a debrid service will greatly enhance the experience, i use Real Debrid, its about $50 a year. Brand new movies generally have to wait til a good rip gets uploaded

  • +6

So it’s minimum ~$6/month for the most basic plan and that’s the cheapest in the world? It doesn’t even seem worth the hassle.

    Love your work anyway.

    • Pretty sure this would break the TOS anyways. So if you are already breaking it, might as well go all the way.

  • +1

After the multiple price hikes and now removal of password sharing, ive gone back to watching my shows on my favourite free streaming service via VPN for ad removal.

    • Parrword Sharing crackdown is not in Turkey yet.

      • +1

Its coming, the rollout is gradual . Obviously alot of system testing and improvments before its implemented on a larger scale

  • Just checked my existing Turkey netflix account and it still says

    Plan
    Standard
    97.99 TL/month

I haven't seen anything about an increase in price yet but don't they have to notify users when they do?

    • +4

Correct. According to Netflix pricing page for Turkey:

These prices apply to new members and will gradually take effect for all current members. Current members will receive an email notification 30 days before their price changes, unless they change their plan.

      • +1

        Thanks ISP.

        Love your work!

  • +11

Netflix are assholes for making us pay for their top subscription just to get 4k. What if I wanted only 1 screen 4k (profanity)?

    • -8

Then turn off the other 3 screens.

  • +2

Turkish voters need to consider what will result in the best deals for us internet travellers. Don't worry about anything else.
