Sennheiser HD 201 Headphones $25 EB Games + Price Match OW $23.75

740

These cans have such a good wrap for being a great value for money product. Numerous reviews point to these being the best bang for buck plus great sound. I couldn't believe EB Games has these at the best price they seem to retail for $49-$32.

Officeworks sells these for $32 so hit them up for a price beat and get them for $23.75 which is a steal.

I searched OzBargain to find previously good prices and price matching OW would be one of the best.

There shouldn't be any issue price matching these as they are both bricks & mortar stores :D

great Comfort and Bang for your Buck!

  • Good price, bought mine for $18 when this deal was on

How's the bass on these things? As a self-proclaimed bass-head, does it have earthquake like tremors for the low end? What does it rate on the Richter scale?

    • +6

      Don't get it for the bass. It's … non-existent.

      • -2

        Not true.

        • +4

Partially true! I just upgraded my 201's with the ATH-T400's on here recently, and the difference in bass is pretty big!!
The 201's don't have that much bass, so as a bass head I would probably find another set of headphones that would better suit….

        • wooo can't wait to try my 20 dolla ath-t400 too :p

        • +1

I have also both sets. while 201 are great quality, ath-t400 have much better bass and sound a lot better.

Not sure if they're still the cheapest place but if you want bass, these are probably the best from a cheap headphone.

  • Based on a product review on Graysonline: 'The Sennheiser HD 201 headphones are comfortable, very good construction for long-term use. Noise leakage is at a minimum, and the overall sound is balanced as well. They come with an extra long audio cable and is inconvenient at times. Natural bass is lacking, and the maximum volume output is lower than most headphones. It is affordable for the price. Low volume output is an issue when listening to music in noisy environments. If you like to play your music at very loud volumes these are not the headphones for you.'

  • Good price, I'm still using a pair I've had for maybe 5 years+, not sure exactly but a LONG time.

  • Definitely best headphones for this price. Don't compare them with more expensive ones, you won't be doing yourself any favours. Of course a $100 pair is going to be better, and a $250 better still.

    • +9

so … $350 Beats is the king of the hill ey ?

      • +4

Of course the internet told me they were

      • No, Lady Gaga is.

    • bought $120 and $180 and few other cheaper apparently good-branded ones on sale, still think HD201's are the most comfortable :)

  • How are these compared to the audio technica ath t400 that were on sale at cotd weeks ago for $20?

    • I don't know how they compare, but I've been quite impressed with the ATH-T400's I got from that sale.

    • +1

I have both, with the 201s being two years old but with very little use. Haven't given the ATH pair enough time yet, I'm sure they will improve. My comments are based on non-amplified sources with today's refresher just being a notebook. I played one CD track (Peeping Tom - Kill The DJ) which is bass heavy.

Comfort wise: a trade-off. While the 201s are lighter and more compact, the automatic head band adjustment of the ATH gives them the edge in comfort and ease of use for me. If you're sharing a pair of headphones, it's slightly more convenient than sliding the cups up/down on the 201s.
But for longer sessions, the lighter weight (165g vs 260g) of the 201s come into play. They do hug the sides of my head with noticeably more pressure but it's only relative and not what I consider uncomfortable.
If you only had one or the other and weren't directly comparing they'd both feel good in their own way.
      I weighed both including cables.
      HDs = 195g
      ATHs = 305g

Isolation: for my head and ears the Sennheiser is slightly better here. However, it needs to be as the gain (or sensitivity) seems higher with the ATHs. Consequently there's also less sound leakage from the 201s, so they're better when sharing a room.
Based on the claimed specs, this must be down to the larger drivers used for the ATHs (53mm) vs 201s (appear to be 40mm, unable to confirm and I don't want to dismantle them).

      Impedance:
      24Ω (HD201)
      40Ω (ATH-T400)

      Rated SPL:
      108 dB (HD201)
      105 dB (ATH-T400)

Cables: both 3 metres. The ATH cable is a thicker round jacket type. The 201s are the common figure 8 type. The ATH cable only enters the left cup, the 201s are individual. A little more freedom with the ATHs then, for instrument playing situations.
Both also have gold plated 3.5mm and 6.3mm plugs/adapters.

Initial impressions on sound quality: the 201s have a flatter, more neutral response with cleaner highs. The bass is stronger with the ATHs but then everything is much more "forward". Like comparing a car stereo with the LOUDness button off (201s) or on (ATH, obviously ;).

So quite a different sound from each but I expect (hope) the ATHs will become smoother and open up a bit. If they do, and assuming price being equal, the ATHs are the pick.

Bloody hell, sorry for the essay.

      • 'Haven't given the ATH pair enough time yet, I'm sure they will improve. '

You treat your headphones like wine?

        • They do actually 'burn-in' like when you run in an engine. The driver will get more flexible over time. It's 'tight' at first

        • Don't get me wrong, I'm no audiophile.
I worked in radio for a time in the 80s and also use them for guitar practice.

My first Sennheiser were HD40s bought in 1986. Back then, as printed on them they were "Made in West Germany". Apparently they would burn-in prior to packing at that factory.
And sure enough, there's been no appreciable difference in those old ones.

But supposedly it makes a difference these days, as m0nkeycheese (and many others) say.
Perhaps because they've shortened production times in the interests of efficiency, high volume automated production, or whatever.

          This is a good read

          http://headphonebreakin.blogspot.com.au/

He is neither for or against it. But all the maufacturers pretty much agree 'burn-in' exists

I listen to music all day at my PC at work. We also use VOIP software (Lync) on the PC, so when I receive a call occasionally I simply pause spotify.

Is there a good value equivalent to these headphones that also includes a mic? At the moment in using the iphone5 headphones with a splitter to make the mic work on the pc.

  • These are great headphones.. I've been using a pair of these for a couple of years now.. However I recently upgraded to Sony's MDR-XB200 headphones, which you can pick up two pairs for $40 at JB at the moment.. The Sennheisers are great, but the Sonys are even better, especially with the promo. http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/ipod-mp3-portables/headphones…

    • I picked up a Koss Pro DJ 100 headphone from Amazon for $55 + delivery which beats the hell out of this Sennheiser HD 201 headphone. I know because I've got one too and it doesn't sound any where as good compared to my new Koss headphone. Pay a little extra for better quality.

    • Can't find any reviews for the MDR-XB200's except from here on OzB

Those MDR-XB200 headphones are very average, by the way (I have a pair).
      http://www.sony.com.au/product/mdr-xb200/sku/mdr-xb200_dqe

Sensitivity is not great (low volumes for given output) and nothing like the 'soft cushion' MDR-XB300 (and so on) extra-cushy bass models; build quality is cheaper than those here; comfort is worse than the cushy models and the ear-hinge area of the headphones seems more fragile-looking to me (just by appearances of the plastic). Sound is OK for its class but just less sensitive so harder to drive to higher volumes if you like that. They have a 'fresher' look about them.

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/93544

But they seem like an alright deal

      • I think for the price.. which is what we're about here, and getting good VFM.. then the Sonys @ 2 for ~$40 is a great deal. True about the 'no bass' in the 201s, great bass in the Sonys.

    • Do you know when the 2 for 1 offer ends?

      • Not sure when the deal ends but it looks like you can get it online..

    • Thanks for this bargain.. Went and bought these..tested were great!! Glad i didnt drive so far to get the senns 201

    • Sony headphones. Do they have mic?

  • How is this one compare to Kogan (Pro Urban DJ Studio Headphones)?

  • +1

I've had the 201s for around 4 years ($15 at a JBs clearout) and have used them consistently for listening to movies on my laptop and for gaming, and some TV and music. The main benefits are that they are light, comfortable and don't get too hot over long listening periods. Their sound is precise but somewhat dull if you like bright highs and heavy bass, and they have a narrow soundstage. Very good for 2 hour movies, not so much the other things, depending on taste of course.

The coating on the padding started to come away about 18 months ago and the cable jacket started to split from the cans down. Had to open them up and shorten the wire but it's now happening again (see photo). The other issue is that these phones are relatively inefficient, especially compared to my ozbargain $20 ATH-T400 beauties. The latter are much, much louder at the same input volume, and have a far superior sound but are heavier, hotter and not as adjustable for people with longer heads.

I'd still get the 201s at this price if movies are your main thing or you like a more subdued sound.

    • thanks, DarryID.

I have bargained ATH-T400, so not going to take this one.

  • These are solid headphones. And at this price, I'd certainly recommend them.

I rocked these and the HD202s for a good while. I wouldn't say the bass is powerful, but they certainly more emphasised in these two (I guess Sennheiser tends to do this).

  • How would these go on a plane?

    • +3

      up and down

    • +1

      Probably in your hand luggage!

  • Great headphones for the price point. My son loves his.

I prefer the TDK-ST-200 but that's personal preference, and I can't seem to get them any more.

  • +1

….just rocked up into the store, was told that it is an online only offer for $25. The offer in store was buy 2 for $50.00. Called up customer service was first told that it should be $25 in store too. When I mentioned the earlier conversation, the lady said that the price is the 2 for $50.00 as confirmed in store…. and confirmed the advertisement on the website is misleading!!! wtf

  • Got one at Office Works at Clarence Street, Sydney. Didn't have any left on the shelf. I asked them to check in the stockroom and sure enough I grabbed one for $23.75. And no I don't have a pressing need for it but may be it's time I started enjoying some music on the way home rather than hearing it from that odd person's leaky earphone who is always around :(

  • +1

First off, if you want a good price on these I would price-match at OW and get an additional 5% off.

Secondly, there is so much wrong with the HD201's that I'm convinced a majority of the positive feedback comes from people who don't own them (the only reason they keep getting peddled on OB is because they have Sennheiser plastered all over them):

    • Narrow oval instead of circular ear cup shape. Great if you have cat-like ears that just fold back. Otherwise for humans and particularly humans with big ears, there just isn't enough clearance, particularly for the top of your ear so they end up squashing the cartilage of your ear, making them uncomfortable for extended periods of time.

    • Shit-house construction. Go read the Amazon reviews. A pretty much universally-regarded fault. The headband is very prone to cracking because of the brittle plastic used and because the ear cups are connected to the headband on stupid pivoting joints (unlike virtually every other monitor headphone which has FIXED joints) they are not very durable. They also make getting a good "seal" on your ear to reduce background noise harder because they sit unevenly.

    • Horrible tinny sound, heavy distortion with highs and almost no lows. I mean no bass; forget the whole "natural sound" vs "studio sound"/"you listen to too much Techno" argument that audiophiles have, these drivers are physically incapable of going below 20Khz.
Everything I listen to with them sounds like someone has fiddled with the treble setting on my Audio panel. I guess they may tolerable for movies, the dialogue does come across crisp and very clear, but for anything else that veers either towards the low or high frequencies of the spectrum, it just can't do it.

    • Crap noise isolation. They use some kind of imitation leather as the padding instead of the usual budget headphone velvet-coated padding stuff, which to me doesn't seal an ear quite as well because it's incredibly soft. It's also more prone to tears, rips, smudges, etc.

The HD201's are so tinny and have such poor isolation they really aren't worth the price even at $10.

I expected so much more from these things given the way everyone raved and raved hysterically on WP and a few other places about them.
I would at least recommend you go for the HD202's.

I got a pair of HD201's when Bing had a clearance on them and I have to tell you that my bottom-of-the-barrel, 5-year old, knock-around Philips SHP2000 (which are thoroughly el-cheapo) blow them out of the friggin' water. Literally like the difference between night and day. And these are ancient and have been bashed senseless over the years.
And those are even cheaper in construction than the HD201's.

Honestly… do not be fooled by badge-marketing; these are horrible, horrible headphones.

    • +2

The only thing is sound is VERY subjective! You may have worse/better hearing and thus hear different frequencies..

Saying that thanks for the detail review

    • +1

Totally agree with your review. Have the HD 201, HD 202 and HD 65 TV WEST and the HD 202 is way better. Invest the extra cash for a better set.

  • +1

Best bang for buck headphones! Had mine for years and still good (except the left side snapped).

  • I got mine for $20 three years and still going strong. Great valu(e.

($20 at hardly normal of all places, lol)

  • As others have pointed out, I wouldn't use these for travel or walking etc, the 3m long wire may be annoying.
Other than that, they seem alright, I've listened to them a few times in JB Hifi (some stores have them setup to test). You can def tell the difference between these and the 70 dollar Seinhausser headphones though, bass wise. Still probably going to be better than some of the crappy brands that are overpriced.

  • I got these nearly 2 years ago in this deal: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/43013

Still going strong, don't believe the unrealistic negative reviews (no matter how zealous they seem); they're certainly not high end, but they're still a great buy at this price point. :)

  • +5

    My HD201s are bluetooth: http://www.azkay.com/images/hd201/v2/

Normally I'd say you need a hobby, but I think that ship has already sailed… :)

    • +1

That's cool did you put the muffs back on ?

      • Yeah

    • Christ.

  • +1

The audio technica's that were recently on for $20 from cotd are much better than these, which I also have. Hd202's are a LOT better than this and even some cheaper tdk's(jb) sound better to be honest. Really not a good offering from sensheiser i feel, sorry to spoil party:(

I palmed these off to my mum Muhahahaha. Main issue is bass and especially clarity.

  • I'd buy these If I didn't buy the last 2 audio technica deals. my annual headphone budget is way over…

  • Have owned this headphone for almost a year. Initially sounds too soft even with full volume on ipod but after a couple months of use it gets louder with the bass component improving slightly. If you are looking for some "sub-woofer" type of bass you get with other earphones definitely this headphones is a no-no..

Bass issues aside, it has quite accurate sound production, so the higher bitrate your music file is the better. Cheap comfy construction.

the 2 for 40 from jb hifi on the sony headphones sounds good :D though…

  • I just bought one from Office Works after a price beat. Thanks.

  • nice deal, picked this up from Office Works for 23.75

  • I bought a pair of these last deal and they're not awesome quality to be honest.
Mine have emitted a very faint high pitch noise when there's a gap in the sound since brand new.
I can deal with it, but they're not my first choice.

  • Thumbs up
