Why does anyone need a $1895 or $2500 TV when $599 ones are available?

      • +1

Funny you should say that, I picked up a 65" TV for $600 recently and am really happy with it.

    • +2

I think its a reasonable question. 'Need' is always the wrong way to think about things, but you are paying for a superior product (and covering the R&D that funnels down into the $500 devices).

The main draw for these is the camera. Other valuable features are the IP68 rating ('waterproof', dust resistant), fast charging, large screen and good screen responsiveness/colour reproduction.

Like many things, if you are going to be using it a lot you should get something of a decent quality. for some people that may be $500, for others $100 or $2000. Its all a balance of what you can afford.

    • +2

Exactly the same reason as any other product. It may do a lot of the same things but it does them better. Phones from 15 years ago also took photos, but the next one did it better and then better again and betterlr again. A $5000 car gets you around as well, but a more expensive one will do it more comfortably, with more bells and whistles and better fuel efficiency. I could also eat at home but why do I choose to eat at a restaurant? If you work, have enough disposable income to be able to do it then why not

    • +1

No need, it's want. People need shelter + food, everything else is want.
I used to want the latest phone, and people thought I was spendthrift paying for a O2 XDA back in the day… I've had every single flagship Samsung phone since the Galaxy II to the Gaalxy S8+ when a couple months in it fell from aboutr 15cm on to concrete and cracked the screen.

From now on I'm buying whatever scores well from Xiaomi, but I remain vehemently spendthrift with personal and home audio, where $2k doesn't get you in the door… still ain't buying snake oil cables though, monoprice + amazonbasics in that department.

The world needs early adopters to keep the wheels of innovation turning, so buy the damn phone already.

Pretty weird seeing tech trends repeating though, looking at you flip fones 2.0.

I want bendy phones, where the screen and body are soft and bendy, so they don't crack if dropped from 15cm, you can sit on them, have them bend in your pocket, have your wife throw them at you…

    • Honestly, this is a fair assessment considering we are on this site called "Ozbargain". But if you look upthread, there was a person who actually made money from selling a S10.

      • +3

Honestly, this is a fair assessment considering we are on this site called "Ozbargain".

We are on OzBargain, not OzCheapestThings. A bargain is a good deal on an item - it doesn't mean it has to be the cheapest brand.

Value is subjective. I've used Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, and now a Pixel 4. I think Samsung makes the most well-rounded flagship-spec Android phone, which makes it worth the extra money for me. But at the same time I wouldn't recommend it to everyone - some people will be perfectly satisfied with a $400 Pocophone. Different people simply have different use cases and priorities.

If OzBargain only listed the cheapest items, we will never see a single Apple deal, Sony/LG/Samsung TVs, Bosch power tools, Dyson vacs, etc. We will only see Pocophones, Viano TVs, Ozito tools, and Xiaomi vacuums.

        • -2

I think $450 off is a shit discount but not a bargain (i.e. as you say, a good deal). Subjective though. Of course, this is for a product that was just announced so any discount could be called a bargain but meh it's overpriced.

          • +4

@ippy: $450 (or 22.5%) is a shit discount for a brand-new product? Well then. We certainly have different expectations. :)

            • @eug: I already acknowledged that and said it was subjective. Ultimately it's overpriced if they're able to immediately provide discounts.

    • +1

I am using a 3 yr old phone and ive not upgraded as most of the phones in past few years missed out on something important. Im upgrading to this as i cant find any other phone that gives everything in one package. Im gonna keep the phone for another 3 yrs and this is the only phone which will probably not feel outdated for the longest time compared to others in the market now. It has 5g, it has an exorbitant amount of ram and storage, 120hz screen, 240hz touch refresh, power cpu and gpu, big battery, big screen and one of the best displays, in hand felt same size as 11pro max despite having bigger screen(only width matters when u hold phone not height), superb camera setup with 8k video and single take option, lot of extra features like reverse charging, 45w fast charging etc.. every other current flagships lack 2 or more of the features. No other phone has everything like this.So yes 2k for this phone seems like a good deal for some of us.

      • i would go P40 Pro next month if it had Google store enabled

  • Can TRS be claimed at the airport if purchased from the Education Store?

    • +1

Yes, it has a valid ABN and tax component on the receipt.

    • but you won't be able to claim TRS unless you have the item on you. We are not sure yet when Samsung will fulfill pre-orders.

      • 6th March.

        • i leave on the 25 feb :(

          • @plentifoo: I'm in the same boat… or the same plane I guess?

Really want to order this but I leave on 2nd of March. insert expletive

            • @syx: They don't check the item anyways. Bring an old phone with a flip case and just show the outside if you're paranoid. So many times I left my item in the bag, process and my refund and off I go.

Education store gets the galaxy buds+ as well, says in the T&C for the promo https://images.samsung.com/is/content/samsung/p5/au/terms-conditions/samsung-galaxy-s20-pre-order-offer-terms.pdf?$ORIGIN_PDF$

    • Doubtful and someone can try after they receive their product.

“Samsung Online Store” means any online portal operated by Samsung in Australia through which eligible
consumers or businesses can purchase the Participating Products, including Samsung’s e-store in Australia
(accessible at the URL https://shop.samsung.com/au) and the Samsung Education Store.
For the avoidance of doubt, the Samsung Online Store excludes the website known as the ‘Samsung Staff Portal’
and the websites known as ‘Samsung Enhanced Partner Portal

      • +1

It specifically says in your quote that education store is included.

        • +1

but its Educational portal aka Samsung Epp.

          We all can try.

Best thing is to not jump on the chat and ask for clarification.

By doing this they will know about this and wont allow anyone of us to actually claim the galaxy bud+

          • +1

@fantoo: The Education portal/store is not the EPP store. EPP stands for Samsung Enhanced Partner Portal.

    • +1

So.. Is the Samsung Education Store we're talking about here something different that is lumped in with the EPP or is it seperate? If so, Education Store is elegible for the free buds by the looks.

      • only time will tell I think

      • And also i can see on my education portal that it inlcudes the wireless battery pack as well :)

      • +2

Says this at the bottom of the page :( So now we have two conflicting T&C. Wonder if you can decline the battery and apply for the Buds+ instead?

"Discount off RRP on the Galaxy S20 | S20+ | S20 Ultra purchased from the Samsung Education Store from 9.00am (AEDT) on 12 Feb 2020 to 11.59pm (AEDT) on 5 March 2020. Not available in conjunction with Galaxy Buds+ offer. Subject to stock availability at time of purchase. Discount is not transferable, exchangeable or redeemable for cash. Not available in conjunction with any other offer."

EDIT: Actually it says in the buds+ promo T&C that it cant be used in conjunction with other offers aka battery pack offer, so looks like a bust!

      • -5

just a note on the buds. i got them for free with my active 2 watch

        the buds are abbsolute garbage

        1. shitty sound quality
        2. terrible reception like if im running then the sound only comes through about 30% of the time, terrible distorted sound most of the time and no sound some of the time. with every swing of my arm while running the sound and connection is affected.
        3. if im lying at the beach and i have the phone on one side and then then over, the buds lose connection and cant reconnect. it's literally less than 1m but a change in postion means they just cant cope and give up.
        4. actual human bodies seem to block the reception hardcore
        5. the frustration and unreliability in using them makes them not worth using and just utter POS
        • just a note on the buds. i got them for free with my active 2 watch

You didn't, as this is a brand-new model that hasn't been released yet. It has dual drivers and a much longer 11-hour battery life.

Yours might be defective. I have the 2017 model and have no reception problems. The reception on them is much better than the Beoplay E8. At home it only starts cutting out about 2 gyprock walls and a cupboard away.

  • Finally got my $50 code and order placed!

The cases were surprisingly cheap as well.

    • im having issues getting $50, i never got the email. could you advise.

      • It took like 30-40mins for me.

    • +1

from what i can tell on the website, a clear case is provided in the box with the phone.

Seems like the same case that sells for $19.20.

  • Is it possible for this promo to sell out? I'm not sure if I should wait out to see if there are any good plans like with what JBs did with the Note 10 last year.

    • mate just combine with $50 off newsletter discount and get one of these.
you get a wireless powerbank too.

If you get any new or better deals just cancel or return it.
Samsung has 14 days change of mind returns as well.
This ships on 6th March I think.

You have more than a month to decide on.

      • Unfortunately I'm a bit strapped for cash after Christmas, I can't really afford to buy two phones while I wait for Samsung to process a return on one.

        • +1

I'm pretty sure I saw Afterpay as an option when paying.

        • +4

Then maybe you shouldn't be buying new phones

    • I mean realistically it's going to be pretty unlikely for any external retailers to beat EPP pricing with all the bonuses (buds and wireless) in the next month.

If you manage to resell any of these you can reduce the rrp even further.

Also out there, a lot of it will be based on RRP which is already $270—300 more on the base model.

  • Yes, found below in the T's & C's document:

"“Samsung Online Store” means any online portal operated by Samsung in Australia through which eligible
consumers or businesses can purchase the Participating Products, including Samsung’s e-store in Australia
(accessible at the URL https://shop.samsung.com/au) and the Samsung Education Store. "

So it means purchases made on Education Store are eligible for Galaxy Buds+ as well as Wireless battery Pack. :P

    • +4

As noted above the wireless battery promo says cant be used with Buds+ promo so there is two conflicting T&C, one saying you get them another saying you dont.

  • -6

    Cool stuff!!!
When my Xiaomi Poco F1 kicks the bucket, I'll get another Chinese phone for under 500$ :)

    • +3

Cool story, bro, thanks for sharing. You might find these links useful. You know, in case you need someone to listen.

  • Hmm I wonder what good guys commercial has instore for us 🤞

  • Silly question: if I currently have a Optus Sim which uses 4G, can I buy the 5G version and will it work? Or do I need to change my sim/service with Optus to make it 5G so the 5G model works?

    • 5G Devices are backward compatible, so a standard 4G will work.

    • +1

In addition to the above you need to have a 5G plan to have 5G active, or it'll just run on 4G & 3G.

  • +3

Yeah Nah. Brings them down to what the RRP should already be!

  • -3

Can't believe how fast these refreshes come out these days. Think I'll stick to my Xiaomi 9T I just bought in that other deal. Heyo!

    • +10

Can't believe how fast these refreshes come out these days.

Hmm, the S series phones, just like every other flagship phone, has been released once a year for the past 10 years or so.

      • +2

yeh stupid comment tbh, everyone knows every year there is a new one, at least better than huwawei every 6 months or one plus.

  • +2

id love to see some camera comparisons between the iphone 11 and s20 asap, specially video recording and stabilization, night shots etc

  • For someone that usually keeps phones for 3 years, went s4 & s7 & could go s20 now…. do you think its worth paying the extra for 5G? Like its not a big deal now, but will it be in 12months?

    • I'd say its worth it now unless there is a specific area you use your phone that you need the extra speed from.

In 6 months I would say it could be worth it and things will likely be a lot more competitive as well.

      • +5

Remember its an additional 4GB RAM for 5G models, eSim + Nano Sim (either one can be set as 5G, other one as 4G) + MicroSD slot
And its only $120 so I would say go for the 5G model everyone, that worth it for the RAM and future resale alone

    • +1

Also worth noting the 5g S20 comes with 12GB ram vs 8GB for the 4G. 8 GB is still plenty but it's still worth pointing out.

If you keep your phone 3 years I'd definitely be considering the 5g option, the overall cost difference when you consider it will have higher resale when it comes time to sell it is pretty small.

    • I beg to differ.
If you're not upgrading phones every time a new model comes out, I'd just buy S10 with 4G, as in 9 months S20 will not be a flagship anymore anyway … :)

      • I am thinking that as well, wondering if there will be some good s10 deals around

        • I'm in the same boat - thinking of getting a S10 Plus and using it for a year and then re-considering 5G.

Having said that, based on what I can see on eBay:

S10 Plus might fall to about $850 and I'm guessing it could be sold for about $450 in a years time, meaning the phone will cost $400 for the year.

The S20 Plus 5G costs $1319 and I'm guessing it could be sold for about $700-750 in a years time, meaning the phone will cost about $600 for the year.

So essentially the question becomes, do we want to spend the extra $200/year to have the latest tech?

  • tried to search the net but not having much luck. Does anyone know if these models come in esim +physical sim + microsd slot?

    • +1

Yes it does for all S20 & S20+ 4G as well as 5G models. Not sure about the S20 Ultra 5G. Confirmed in Live Chat

  • +1

Samsung has now updated T&Cs, so whoever has placed an order and have previous T&Cs should be able to claim. The new T&Cs are v3

Samsung Online Store” means any online portal operated by Samsung in Australia through which eligible
consumers or businesses can purchase the Participating Products, including Samsung’s e-store in Australia
    (accessible at the URL https://shop.samsung.com/au).
For the avoidance of doubt, the Samsung Online Store excludes the website known as the ‘Samsung Staff Portal’,
the Samsung Education Store and the websites known as ‘Samsung Enhanced Partner Portal’

    • +1

The previous T&C had a catch all clause that it couldn't be used in conjunction with any other offer so its unlikely even orders already made would be honoured. i.e. the wireless battery was the other offer blocking it.

      • +1

exactly. They sure will deny it and with the updated T&C, its clear someone was way too smart to jump on the chat and ask about this.

  • a power bank RRP 99 what a load of inflated price bullshit

40 bucks at officeworks for wireless charging banks i bought a comsol one and it's great

  • Perhaps time to use a card with price protection and keep claiming back as its price go down in next few months.

  • Looks like the USA has officially slashed s10 prices, hopefully we will follow.

  • +1

Dont think anyone has mentioned they have no headphone socket :(

    • Ikr. Waiting for s10+ to be on stock with slashed price on EPP.

  • Anyone know how quick Samsung shipping is?

If I pre-order and it ships on the 5th, do you think it'll arrive by the 6th?

I fly out on the 8th (Sunday) to the US and would like to claim back GST via TRS.

    • +1

Preorders sometimes arrive before the day

  • Hi everyone, i couldnt find place to register Samsung newsletters. Can someone please point it out? Thank you

    • Hey, I had the same problem, use a new browser or clear your cache and cookies and re-login, it should pop up on the bottom right of the education portal.

  • anyone with unused $50 code? I cant seem to get the email. please dm :D

    • I tried serval times to get a $50 code using the email my epp account is registered with and never got one.

So I logged in with my Pc this time got the newsletter sign up $50 promo again so I signed up with a different email that I know hasn't been subscribed before and about 30 - 60mins later I got a code.

  • Question,

If I borrow someone's .edu email address would I be able to sign up to this portal and use my full name to order and appear on the invoice?

    • +1

You can use your name in the tax invoice (delivery and billing address).

    • i used my free melbourne alumni email

      • do you get issued the tax invoice straight away?

  • Is there any difference between the S20 ultra 128GB vs the 512GB? Apart from the memory?

    • +2

      12gb vs 16gb ram.

      • Oooooh all right thanks for that!

  • -4

was about to purchase till I saw it is single sim

this is absolutely ridiculous to be paying 2k for a phone and single sim.

E Sim and Physical sim is not DUAL SIM as you can only have one on at a time.

  • -2

can you coach step by step how to do this? Is your take value estimate realistic? tell us how successful you've been in the last on recouping your$$ outlayed? thx heaps for the heads up on this

  • Are preordered charged at time of order or dispatch?

    • You are charged when you place your order

  • The education discount is bigger than the corporate. The s20 ultra 512gb is 1911 where it is 1799 with education.

  • Has anyone been able to get JB/HN to match EPP pricing if you logged into your account infront of them?

    • +3

Sure, i comes with free watch, buds and wireless charger too.

      • -1

Hi, I’m interested to how do you get that deal? You get galaxy s20, free watch (which model?), bud+ and wireless charger? Could you please detail your bundle? Thanks

    • +1

They do pricematch only when something is available to general public.

HN never pricematch anything with some BS reason:lower than RRP or market value.

  • -8

    No phone is worth $1500.

Good price for people who want this, but I can't really call this a "deal"

    • +8

      Bargains are not for everyone.

Just because you would prefer a cheaper phone, it doesn't really change if its a deal.
