Remember that Apple will price match up to 10% in-store, if you took advantage of any Apple gift card sales

    • Even on custom configs?

      • +9

I don't think so. Rules are it has to be available to buy at another physical store. You know Apple, they would rather not make a sale then make slightly less money.

        • +2

        Last time I check no.

If you can access the AOC store, it is less at $1,678.60 for M2 Mac Air, combine with Apple GC deal (another 10% worth), and CashReward cash back (currently 6%), you may save a few more bucks.
But if you believe you are not entitled to AOC price, then this is as good as it get ;-)

      • +1

Dont think cashback works on the Air etc

        • +1

Ineligible for cashback (updated 25/07/22): Mac Studio, Mac Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, MacBook Air M2, MacBook Pro 13" M2, Gift Cards, Gift Wrap, Shipping, Apple Developer Programs, AppleCare products purchased individually (or after associated product has shipped).

          :(

@BargainsGrabber: My bad, I was thinking of the M1 that I bought this week combining the 3 discounts for a relative…

            • @Buy2Much: No worries, I’m tempted for the M2 Air as well haha
If only my 2018 MacBook Pro can show its age :/

            • @Buy2Much: Did you get cashback on AOC

              • @avitherock: Not tracking yet, usually only after Apple ships which is 2-3 weeks. Now that you mention it, I vaguely recall some comment a while while back about AOC being considered the same as EEP so may not qualify for cash back. May have to cancel and retry the Education store instead… Combined discounts for the M1ish would still be greater than either TGG or JB with 10% and GC…

      • +4

Cashback doesnt work on AOC store

      • How can I get cashback on AOC purchase since the outbound link from CR takes you to regular education store and not AOC?

        • Previous comments indicate that AOC purchase may not qualify for cash back. ‘Better use the normal education store. The combined discounts are still worth it…

      • On AOC store, couldn't get the account balance applied to purchase for me.

any of you can place order on AOC with Apple account balance applied?

        • Yes I have.

          • @Buy2Much: No problem with applying balance and placing order?

I’m stuck at “Review Your order” tab, just won’t let me proceed. But if I’m not applying balance, it’s all fine to proceed the sales through AOC

    • @TheRealCJ Thanks for sharing this tip.

    • I'd prefer to buy from apple store but no in store stock it looks like zzz.

    • I tried checking at Apple Chadstone last time, and they said they can’t.

8GB RAM on a $1700 laptop, are you taking the piss

      • +8

the M series SOCs could be graced by god himself, 8GB RAM is insane for a $1700 laptop

        • M series is pretty amazing. 8 gigs is fine for many use cases.

Please post an alternative with comparable build quality and quality of components. That's much more useful than whinging about specs.

          • -3

            @ihfree: $1,599.20 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334503611958
            i5 12th gen, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD

btw, "8GB is fine for many use cases" sure, but not if you're paying $1700 for the privilege

            • +9

@dm02: The M2 outperforms the i5-1230U in all areas with less cores and lower clock speed. Source

Silicon is also much better at managing memory compared to Intel which is why "8GB is fine for many use cases" on the M2 Macbooks.

              • -1

@jsediv: Where did you get 'most users' from? I do not remember any data that confirms your statement.

I can also say 4gb of RAM is good for most users. Or 64GB hard drive is good for most users….

        • +6

Might want to look at the actual performance champ.
I'm a Windows user and still find it crazy what they can do with the "specs"

          • -1

@Lonewolf1983: It's a ARM chop. Same as on your phone. It's not crazy amazing. The technology has been around for decades is just that apple is pollished it with their OS.

            • @shegeloaf: CPUs have been around for decades. Every new generation is more polished than other CPUs.

Apple have an architectural license for ARM and has designed its own chips. They do obviously have experience from iOS devices.

There are a few advantages it has over current x86 processors:

              • Newer process node (5nm)
              • CPU/GPU sharing memory
              • being a SOC, everything is close together

This is all coupled with tight integration with the OS. Unlike Wintel, there's no need to worry about 100s of different combinations.

          • +1

@Lonewolf1983: Thanks chump. All geekbench numbers look good until you need a usable gpu, and thats when AMD and Nvidia deliver the goods.

            • @tshar104: No one is buying a mac specifically for gaming. People who need a GPU for other purposes probably have enough knowledge to know what they require.

              • @ihfree: M1 chips are asics… it's simply the same Arm architecture as phones just modified for computers.

WINDOWS has that in their computers years ago but it did not gain mass adoption. Apple has made a good product but dont act like the technology just dropped out of nowhere by Apple.

Its like electric cars and tesla. Toyota and other manufacturers had electric cars before tesla but just they could not advertise is well to gain mass adoption.

                • @shegeloaf: Lol, it's not an ASIC. You're being ignorant if you actually think that.

Macs are not locked down and already can run Linux. Microsoft could even release windows to run on the device. Btw, windows in a VM benchmarks very well.

Apple have designed the chip and have not simply modified a ARM design. It implements the ARM instruction set.

Obviously the technology didn't come out of nowhere - this is already covered in my other reply to you.

                  • @ihfree: So you are saying the same thing in saying but just trying to get more credit to mac because you are in love with the company.

                    • @shegeloaf: Nope, I'm challenging your irrational stance. Your comments barely make sense, ignore facts, and are full of salt.

I want there to be an alternative to Apple silicon as competition drives innovations and keeps prices down.

How is a M1 an ASIC?

    • +6

Programs running on Silicon use much less RAM compared to Intel so 8gb is actually quite reasonable (For a Mac with M1/M2 chip)

People must be uninformed or just really hate Apple products yet still click the link

      • +1

yeah my real beef with them is they downgraded the speed for their 256 SSD compare to last year to force you upgrade to 512 version

Memory not so much tbh, all of all I think m1 air is still a banger deal compare to m2 model even after 2 years

        • +2

The real world difference in SSD speed is not even noticeable

          • +1

@prhino: It is this time because the soc integrated memory will swap with SSD for volume and the performance difference is pretty noticeable, go check out the MKBHD on the new air

          • +1

@prhino: Stop making excuses. Apple has brought out a worst spec system than previous Gen M1 and you still want to say that it's great. No the ssd is worse in m2 and they should start on 512gb ssd and 16gb ram.

            • +1

@shegeloaf: No one is making excuses. Apple's margins are ridiculous, but it's a fact that in the team world the difference in performance isn't noticeable.

Well I just clicked on the link you posted and I read the whole thing. It presents no evidence that MacOS running on Apple Silicon uses less RAM compared to Intel silicon, in fact it doesn't even mention anything about RAM efficiency, you did.

    • +1

Its ridiculous, I love Apple products but they always skimp on RAM. Starting from my first IOS device, a 3rd gen iPad, every single IOS device I've ever had has suffered from webpage and app refreshing problems including my 6GB iPhone and 8GB iPad Pro.

No, the better software/hardware integration does not overcome the low RAM and the user experience suffers because of it.

  • +2

Those M1 Airs come down to a very reasonable price

    • +2

20 chrome tabs including 6 youtube tabs made M1 air stuck with rainbow rolling mice. Not great performance.

      • +5

Why are you watching 6 YouTube streams simultaneously?

      • ive noticed the same on any streaming site even if its paused it kills the 8gb with more than 5 tabs open, wish i had gone 16gb on my m1 mba.

        • +2

Apple fans will still argue that 8gb is all you need. They think those who criticise apple don't know anything about MAC architecture.

          • +1

@shegeloaf: This is simply a case of choosing the right machine for what you plan on doing. I have machines ranging from 4GB to 64GB. I'm well aware that certain tasks won't run on machines with less ram.

Apple Silicon isn't magic. RAM is RAM. Exceeding physical RAM will result in swapping which will result in wear on the SSD. How much that matters is another question.

SSDs have a very long lifespan. For the average user with an Apple silicon mac, this is likely not going to be a concern and will likely be transparent. The same thing happens on Windows machines even if it's not quite as transparent. So what if it writes to the SSD every now and then?

For certain applications, where more ram is required, this may become a concern. For example, if you're using an under-specced machine for photo editing, video editing, on a regular basis you're more likely to run into issues and exhaust the SSDs lifespan.

            • @ihfree:

That's all very true, but SSD wear is not the primary issue when it comes to swapfile use - speed is. Apple SSD's do around 2GB/s whereas RAM does 35GB/s (M1) - 50GB/s (M2) - that makes a huge difference in real world performance. Any swapfile use incurs an unacceptable performance penalty in my view.

  • If JB will price match from good guys?

Most definitely will, they are the same company.

  • if you buy the Macbook Air M2, can we upgrade with Apple to 16GB ?

    • Upgrade to 16 or 24GB is available from Apple

      • For clarity, selection of configuration at time of purchase as per comment below

    • The RAM is non-upgradable so anything over base you'll have to deal with Apple directly and be prepared to bend over.

  • Can anyone tell me how to redeem ultimate home g/c on the website? None of them are working!

    • Order online and pay (using Giftcards) in store.

Obviously won’t work if you want/need it delivered.

  • Needing a Macbook for my daughter going into yr7 next year.

Can anyone convince me it’s worth pulling the trigger now, given the 24m warranty and daily usage won’t occur for another 7months! (Effectively wasting 30% of its warranty period before high school starts.)

I am surprised and happy to see another 10% off MacBooks given the last was about 1 month ago.

    • Buy with a card like Amex that has an extra year's warranty on top. Your card's insurance might vary.

      • My Westpac card offers an extra years insurance but I have the Home Giftcards to use for this purchase. It’s just a matter of when.

      • Not much of difference with/out credit card's extended warranty in this case, as the listed warranty on Apple is one year but they do honour it for two years.

    • You can wait. These 10% deals come up every month or two. Closer to Xmas almost certain.

      • Yes and no. Currently you can get an extra 10% through gift cards. Not too sure if we may be seeing a clash in promos near Xmas

        • Thoughts on a November Black Friday campaign with 10% off (maybe 15% off but I know that’s a stretch!). Much closer to Feb than now.

      • That’s great if it does but the other ‘unspoken risk’ is if the model is on Back Order or Out of Stock.

Apple are known to still sell even without stock on hand.

    • Probably buy her a silicon case or something as i see younger kids dropping pcs and macs most weeks at school.
If it drops on a corner and the screen cracks, get ready to line up at the apple store and lube up!

      • This will be the 4th Macbook in the family.
Fortunately only the 2nd child's (daughter) macbook has dented corners, but no cracked screen.

Battery wear is probably my concern. Replaced it with apple on the first child's MB air.

  • Does anyone know if TheGoodGuys would accept returns for a genuine 'change of mind' reason? (i.e. ?Same as direct from Apple.)

I already have an iPad Pro M1, just want to know if MacBook Air M2 would be any better.

    • +1

They are very different devices though, what do you want to do with it?

      • I understand. I have never owned a MacBook before.

        My thinking behind it:
        - iPad Pro M1 with the magic keyboard is actually quite heavy, it is not as portable as I imagined. Apparently MBA M2 is lighter.
        - Similarly, the said iPad is not very lap-able, because it is top-end heavy, it is a bit floppy. It is great on the desk though.
        - It doesn't have an OS. It doesn't multi-task very well.
        - With the mask on, it cannot FaceID, I find this frustrating having to type in the pass code repeatedly. MBA can TouchID.
        - iPad apps are limited compared to Android/Windows. I have both.
        - Overall just curious. I am not replacing one over the other, but want to try both.

        • Thats fair, although it really comes down to what you want to use it for. As much as Apple tries to position the iPad as a computer, it’s not - but if you’re just web surfing, watching content, reading emails and doing some productivity work, it works nicely. As soon as you want to get serious (photo and video editing for example) and do multiple tasks simultaneously, then you really want a proper computer.

          • +1

@whatgift: 100% with you. This more or less is my experience with the iPad so far.

I bought the Apple Pencil too but the novelty of writing on a screen wore off after a while. I find it much easier to write on a piece of paper or booklet.

I think the straw for me is definitely the lack of FaceID with masks. Repeatedly entering the pass code takes too long and ?unsafe when others are around.

    • +1

They will, only if the box is not opened. If you are going to use it, they won’t.

    • I sincerely appreciate everyone's responses. Thanks.

My best hope then is to call Apple and hopefully they will 'price match' TheGoodGuys currently -10% off deal? I have never done this before.

    • +1

I have an MBA and Ipad Air.

I find myself using the MBA more often. Though, it has become my main personal computing device with my desktop now mainly used for gaming.

Having both devices is useful. I occasionally use the iPad air as a second screen or with universal control.

  • Hi
I recently order the MacBook Air M1 Base on edu for 1350 with 100$ cashback. You reckon it's worth cancelling for the M2 Base model or no?

After some intense research, the slow sdd may be a bit annoying but it depends on your workload. However, many reports of thermal throbbing and keyboard heating up.

The M1 is still a beast of a device and I'm unsure if getting the M2 is worth it. I already have a PC at home so no need for intensive gaming or editing task. Mostly need something that can survive 6 hour of study with multi tabs.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

    • +3

"Thermal throbbing" that sounds like fun you pay extra for :P

M1 bang for buck and you prob wont notice the difference if thats what you using it for. i have a M1 air with 8gb ram and 512GB (wish i had gone for 16gb) for personal use and work just gave me a 13" MBP with the m2 (16gb ram and 1TB, the old chassis), very different devices yea but tbh the M1 air of mine is always cool and comfy on the couch doing anything even the odd video editing work i play with. Extended loads will have it throttle but if you using it for 6hr study with multi tabs dont bother with the m2.
