  • Hey guys! NEED HELP!
I bought an ultrabook from HN today. What happened was the seal was broken on the box, upon asking the guy told me they have to open each box to chceck the contents if they are right. When I got home i found that the laptop had been repacked as if it was a return or a display model. Upon turning it on it said something like "Restoring all settings to factory default" and took 2 hours to install all the software back on (which pretty much proves that the guy lied to me). So now what do you guys suggest I do? Any response will be appriciated.

Also the whole touchpad moves and makes wierd cheap plasticy noises when i move my finger on it.

ps. i should have never believed that guy
    Thanks

    • +1

looks like a factory refurbished machine, but it should be normal to take 2 hours for the first start of a new laptop

      • +2

AFAIK, ultrabook is not that long.

      • you might be right but the thing was it said something along the lines of factory restoring and started installing softwares which took ages to finish.

    • +1

return it or report it to HN HQ, some of their staff is not educated well. Thanks for sharing this story. BTW, which brisbane store?

      • i actually want to report it. do you know how i should go about it? just write an email to HN HQ?

      • carindale store and thanks for the reply

        • +1

I got mine s3 from carindale too, my sales person was glen. Not good on price since they can't give me a web price but his helpful.
Email them [email protected] or contact directly 02 92016111

        • Thanks for the info buddy I will be writing them an email soon. Cheers!

sounds like ex display to me. How the power adapter has be repackaged is normally a givaway. Also the little feet on the bottom collect crap in not time.

As if they open and check every laptop that come in.

It is pretty common to have more than one layer of tape on the boxes. The supplier often open them but they reseal with their proper manufacturer tape or at least their own seal sticker. They do not reseal with regular clear tape as it would be easier for couriers ect to steal box contents.

Does online still say they have more instock?

      • You are right the power cable looked like it was repacked. I have unboxed laptops before never got skeptical about anything but this one just looked a bit fishy to me.

I now think that the guy was clearly lying. It wouldn't make sense that each and everything in the box looks like its been repacked. You know how the screen is covered with a foam thingo? There was a seal on that and that was also broken.

The online says out of stock unfortunately.

I was thinking that as i care about my stuff some people might ignore little things. HN employees could just be ripping off people who dont know much about tech. It's just sad.

        Thanks for replying man

    • +1

The dodgy salesman must be the hardest working employee of HN spending his time checking the contents of each factory packaged box.

      • +2

        I still can't believe i fell for it :(

Although I bought a HP Envy 6-1010TU as well today, I managed to get a Samsung Nexus for $300! 50% off! Was amazing lol.

  • For anyone who has bought an Acer Aspire S3, is your hardrive size around 250gb? Because on the Harvey Norman site, it's stated as 500gb in addition to the 20gb SSD. Mine is only 250gb in addition to 20gb SSD. It's not too big a deal, but I'm a little puzzled by this. It seems a bit like false advertising to me.

    • Mine is 500 + 20

      • The one I bought last time is 320 + 20.

        • Yep mine is 320 + 20 (not 250 as I was saying before).

    • Based on the official acer http://www.acer.com.au/ac/en/AU/content/model/NX.M1FSA.002 the HDD should be 500GB hard drive + 20GB SSD for Acer Aspire S3-391-32364G52a

      • That's correct. I got the 500gb S3 yesterday as well, which is the low end model.
if you go start>programs>Intel>Intel Rapid Storage Technology, you will see that it has two storage systems. mine shows the SSD @19GB Capacity and the HHD @ 466GB.

      • Hmmm. The model I was sold is the Acer Aspire S3-391-2364G34iss. I didn't check at the time, as I thought all the Acer Aspire S3s would be the same.

        • How much you got it? if it is $839 or $899 you should return it since it's not the specs advertised. If you got it cheaper that's make sense.

        • Are you sure yours is "391" instead of "951"?? All "391" model comes with 500GB + 20GB SSD hybrid drive!! Anyway, I've only used my S3 for less than an hour and now the screen gone black and I can't see anything at all. I've tried to adjust the brightness but doesn't work?

        • Oops, yes it's a 951 =$

        • I didnt know HN is selling the 951 with i3 CPU. Officeworks is selling the 951 model less than the 931. I think the major difference is the 500GB vs 320GB and the keyboard is black va silver otherwise it's almost the same machine.

        • I got it from HN at Domayne if that's relevant at all. I guess it's a relief the only thing I'm missing out on besides the harddrive size is the keyboard colour. I quite like silver actually.

On another note, does anyone know how to install things to the SSD? When installing office for example, I only have the option to install things to the C-drive which is located in the HDD.

        • I've just found out the 951 model only has USB 2 but the 391 model has USB 3 and it looks like 391 is the latest model in the S3 range.

  • +1

I can confirm that I Went into the harvey norman o'connor store in Perth, the signed were there for the $339 acer S3 ultrabook, so indeed that pricing was not a mistake. Same for the HP one (in the 400's from memory).. took pictures of their official signage.

Obviously as with all good things it was sold out and a call to another store told me they'd sold out of their 5 units stock by 9am the sat morn :(

Sigh :( i didn't need one but for that price i sure wouldn't mind one.

  • hi stupid question but for the purpose of claiming cashback/beats headphones, which of the numbers on the box is the serial number. what letter does it start with?

    • CND

  • So we actually have to send the official receipt off to claim our rebate? What happens to our proof of purchase?

    • They should have given you two copies of the receipt.

    • they only ask for a copy

  • +6

For those who purchased the Asus zenbook ux21e , you can get a free Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 from Asus * value at $189 .
    http://www.asuspromotion.com.au/

Again they ask for the serial number but i could not locate it , the box does not have any product information in it. I bought it as a present so i can not open it and look for the SN inside

    • The serial number is on a white sticker underneath the laptop.

    • I also purchased an Asus zenbook ux21e. I asked about the SN at the time, the staff pointed me to two places.

      1. The sticker on the outside of the brown cardboard box the unit came in. "Serial Number BB*************"

      2. The Harvey Norman tax invoice. "S/N BB*************"

(For me these both match the sticker on the underside of the laptop.)

      • Interestingly, my HN tax invoice does not have a serial number. The branch I went to uses a normal thermal printer for coles-style tax invoices. The other HN I go to uses a dot matrix printer with A5-sized tax invoices. Those usually have serial numbers.

        • Interesting, yup my invoice is one of those A5 dot matrix ones.

It does sound like HN's system records the SN so they might be able to provide it if all else fails.

        • The invoice will only have a serial number if someone remembered to enter it on the invoice. Not all stores will do that.

Serial numbers are ALWAYS on the outside of the box. How do you think staff get the serial number on the invoice if it wasnt on the outside of the box? The store needs to access the serial numbers of laptops all the time. When price changes come through from suppliers serial numbers need to be sent through to claim the price protection.

        • I brought 2 x Asus zenbook ux21e.

My receipt has a SN number but my sisters receipt doesnt.

Will is still be able to claim cash back if i write the serial number of the box on the redemption form?

  • Works in W.A. As well!
Just bought an Aspire S3-391 for $839 less the $500 cash back later, at the smaller Harvey Normans in Joondalup (near Anaconda off Joondalup Dve). They suggested they had a couple more and that it was wrong to jack the price up on the day of the sale.
Very pleasant Manager at that store who knew what he was about.
    Does not have an ssd.
They stuck a sticker on the box for a $15 Windows 8 upgrade procedure for later down the track.
At this price I can transfer all my stuff off the Aspire Netbook and try and sell it for $200??

    • Did you manage to get it today? Asking as the cash back offer was only for 30th June.

  • Cash back is processed by central office, so doubt stores would have much say as to whether you qualify today.

    • But I think the invoice have to be dated 30june.

  • Question: Is the 'Serial Number' required for the cashback the 'S/N' on the invoice or the 'SNID on the box of the product? Reason I'm asking is because those two numbers are different.

    • mine is the same both S/N on invoice and SNID on the box.

    • try 2 claims ?

    • My receipt showed the product number instead of the serial number. They must have scanned the wrong barcode.

I put the true serial number on the claim form, otherwise they will detect the same 'serial number' as other claim forms.

I also wrote some notes on the claim form to point out that they had incorrectly scanned the product number (I attached a scan of both the serial number and product number barcodes on the box), to explain why the serial number on the claim form is different from the 'serial number' on the receipt.

If you ended up buying an HP Envy 4 it isn't considered an ultrabook even though the Envy 6 is and there will not be any $500 cashback. HN called me today to take the "laptop" back for a full refund. Not too disappointed as I still managed to get the Asus UX21 as well.

  • For those who have bought Acer S3-391 on Saturday, anyone experiencing black display problem like mine? For some reasons, my screen turns to black today and I have only used the damn thing for less than an hour since purchased. I wonder whether HN will replace one for me or send it to repair??

    • Have you tried playing around with the FN + F keys? for example on my laptop (not an acer) FN + F7 turns my screen on/off. Try all the keys to see if it turns back on.

    • Yeah sounds like you have set it to external screen.

If you turn it off and on does the screen work during boot? (unplug and remove battery to make sure it is off)

      • Yeah, have tried everything (ie reset battery, FN+everything I can press) nothing works. I am going to see HN shortly.

How's the battery life for all the S3'ers? DIdn't manage to get one for $339 but i have an acer netbook so curious to see how you all are loving acer as I had heard it wasn't as comparable quality as asus etc.. still for that price i was even considering getting one just as another 'train ride' usage equipment… (cough although my same purpose use tablet i haven't done much of that haha).

But yeah.. can you go on decent browsing/every day computer use on the ultrabook, and get 5+ hrs? (or 7 as quoted).

    • Nowhere near 7 hours for me. Maybe around 5 but I haven't really been focusing on it.

  • Hi, I got the HP Folio 13 on Saturday - rated top in its class by CNET and most other online review sites. It has an 8hr battery, i3 processor, etc, etc. Very light weight too. No flex in screen like Acer S3 and 128GB SSD drive, which really flies!

Only prob is, I think I might need a bigger screen for work tasks.

I purchased for $998 and I am looking to swap for HP Envy 6 10-10, which retailed for the same price or the samsung.

If you want a top of its class 13" machine and your not happy with your 14 or 15", I'm looking to swap. You can even keep your beats headphones for a truly good deal.

    cheers

    • -1

No beats available for Folio 13's. The redemption period ended on the 30th of April.

      • +1

when he says "you can keep your beats" he is referring to the beats of HP Envy 6 and not the Folio

        • very true, misread it.

  • I just bought a HP 1010TU on Saturday in Perth with 2 years replacement warranty. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit my needs as I need to use it to run heavy applications. Does anyone in Perth want to trade their HP 1001tx ultrabook for my brand new HP 1010tu?

I'd be happy to pay the price difference.

  • I too picked up HP Folio 13. Excellent bulid quality, super fast boot up and amazing battery life - have used for 7 hours since first full charge and still going……

    • Agreed. Stunning computer. Great battery like a netbook and very fast, cause of SSD. The wake from sleep function seems to happen in under 1 second flat. I've never seen that before.

However, I just need a bigger screen. I'm still looking to swap my Folio 13 if anyone feels that their 'ultraportable' purchased on saturday is too big. I'll gladly swap for 14" or 15" HP or Toshiba. PM me. I'm based in Sydney. Heck, I might even chuck in 50 bucks to sweeten the deal and you can keep ur beats too.

      • Shame you're not located in Brisbane. I'm looking to swap my Toshiba 14" and the Folio 13 would have been the perfect size for me.

        • I've sent you a message/but you need to turn on Private messages. Please PM and I give you details of what I have in mind. P.S what model Toshiba did you get?

  • Re Aspire S3 disk capacity:
My S3-391-32364 has h/disks of 465gb and 18.5gb. So I guess it does have an SSD despite the Sales Guy and Manager saying it didn't.
Acer must be making a newer model ever few weeks so the long model numbers have meaning.
The brochure with mine says it has usb 3 ports.

The screen is a disapointment. Text is crisp but photos lack a lot of clarity and the angle of view is so narrow the picture changes with very slight tilting of the screen. I think it even looks worse than the screen on my Acer Netbook.
It would have been much better if it had an IPS screen in it as everything else is ok.
It does feel clunkier than its svelt lines suggest.
I wonder why Netbooks got stuck in a time warp and did not get better performance and better screens as the small form and light weight is preferable.

    • The Acer Aspire S3 has poor screen viewing and a very flimsy screen that tends to wobble/vibrate. Add to that poor battery life and I would hesitate to say that some netbooks are much better value! Not all ultraportables are created equal, that's for sure.

      • I have to agree with you because my S3 only last about 30 mins and the backlit function of the screen went malfunction so the screen turns black but I can still see images from various angle.

  • I have a HP Envy unopened that i want to swap for a Folio if available. I need a smaller screen for travel purposes.
I have taken out Product care for 3 years total cost $660.00 contact me if intersted Located in Melbourne.

  • Anyone selling there aspire S3? :)

  • Anyone looking to sell a Folio 13?

  • anyone got the cashback yet?

    • I have not. Sent the form in a day after I bought it(1/7).

    • Nope. Sent my form in on the day (31st June). I did, however, receive my headphones today (which I'm happily selling for $150).

      • (I mean 30th June…)

    • i have not too. Sent the form on 1/07/2012 and nothing happen until now.
i also sent an email enquiy to make sure whether my claim form has been received, but never receive feedback from HN ………….
except email, any phone no. can make enquiry about the cashback claim?

  • Almost 3 weeks now and no communication from Harvey Norman for cashback yet, not even a email confirmation of the receipt of claim. I could not find a single contact number on Harvey Norman website for anything let alone for cashback follow up? Please share if anyone has a contact number or even email address for cashback inquiries. thanks
