GWM has reduced the price of the Jolion hybrid to under $30k for both private & ABN buyers, the cheapest it has ever been.
One of the cheapest brand new hybrid SUVs available with good features for the price and more interior space than other Chinese competitors at this price point. Sporty look compared to the regular petrol Jolion.
$3000 saving off regular prices.
$495 for metallic Black, Red, Blue or Grey paint.
Differences in drivetrain is more just the fuel economy. Petrol is 1.5L Turbo at 105kw but hybrid is 140kw combined. Also 2-speed transmission in hybrid rather than 7-speed dual clutch for the petrol, so I imagine they would drive quite differently.
Yeah they would drive differently. Red light start will be quicker, truck overtaking will be more seamless and hill climbing will be more effortless on the Hybird.
Saving money for the sake of penny pinching.
Umm to some people. The extra money cost is with more smoother driving and overall driving experience. You won’t be left with empty grunt with a petrol only car.
That, of course is one thing to consider. You must also weight up some more factors
resale price - the Hybrid will hold onto its value better than the petrol model
drivability. The hybrid will be smoother to drive either in town or in the country.
It happens all the time, people comparing petrol and hybrids very often forget that hybrids are usually better not only in economy, but alos better in power output and other features. In this case HEV : Power is higher, around 139kW of power and 375Nm of torque.
My friend got an H6 hybrid, which costs around 37,500~38000. If your budget allows, I would recommend the H6 instead.
I've done a test drive of both Jolion and H6 and I agree, Jolion is a really poor drive, H6 is okay.
I agree. Jolin's steering system is not perfect, but the price difference forces GWM to make a concession.
I was close to buying the H6 GT but found that boot space was abysmal. Tech was also pretty cumbersome and lacked wireless Carplay/AA. Otherwise a nice looking decent drive with a lot of power

I believe there is an update coming across the h6 lineup that gives far more comfortable front seats though.
@Duff5000: Yep that's the one i tried. Trunk space is terrible for and SUV. Hopefully the new one fixes these issues
@Broomstick: Should be a facelife h6 PHEV coming out now that doesn't have the sweeping roofline of the GT. Not as much power IIRC but still up near 300kw.
Also the H7 coming in soon. Not sure when we will see a PHEV of that but i'm keeping an eye out for it.
@itsok: Nope, upper end of medium sized 5 seaters. They have a bunch of new models coming out in the next year some of which may have 7.
IIRC the only GWM currently out as a 7 is the tank 500.

Yep, the H6 ultra hybrid at $44k is a larger car and worth the extra $5k over the Jolion hybrid ultra at $39k. However, if the Jolion lux price drops down to $30k then it's hard to justify the H6 unless you need the larger car.
Very decent rear seat space but the boot in all Jolion hybrids is comically small. As in, almost shockingly small. Do not go into interest in one of these if you need to rely on the "U" in "SUV".

Not bad, this car has some noteable safety features and did quite well on ANCAP if you look at the details of its 5 star rating, it is something of a trailblazer for budget car safety. The hybrid is also heavier, which benefits it's safety because more weight has been consistently shown to lead to better crash outcomes for occupants.
I recently bought an MG4 but as the government is talking about introducing an EV road user charge that will probably exempt hybrids (despite that they also pay less tax), a hybrid is probably the better long term proposition now - which is unfortunate for our national carbon emissions.
So screw anyone else in a smaller lighter car?
The Jolion Hybrid is 1620kg, not particularly heavy - but much heavier than the non hybrid version. The average new car sold today is 2.05 tonnes.

I'm a small car driver with an MG4 and Kia cerato, not making any claims on the morality of car sizes just pointing out that heavier cars are safer and this, at 430kg below the average new car weight, is safer than a car around 650kg below (the jolion non hybrid)

My Ora is the same. It can be easily turned off when you start the car. Annoying, yes, but a 1st world problem.
This is why I call BS on claims about how safe these shit boxes are.
Sure they have a good ANCAP rating, but now days that's basically worthless as it's judged on how many "safety" gimmicks they can cram in.

I would have the same concerns if any car brand could suddenly magically produce cars drastically cheaper following a period of high inflation. What corners have they cut to achieve this?
I don't want it to become like white goods. Most quality brands have been pushed out of the market. Now all we're left with is garbage.
But at least with cheap fridge etc., if they break you buy a new one. If a car breaks you're stuck without a car waiting for the shitty dealer to drag their feet to repair it. You're also likely not putting your life on the line using a fridge.
Not to mention the damage to the environment caused by essentially disposable cars.

@PainToad: to play devils advocate, the average car manufacturer worker in china is ~$30 USD/day, where as in germany its around $370 euro/day.
That's a lot of cost savings there man.
Also note that these guys are flourishing in their own market (i.e. China), where the same car costs nearly half what we pay. I.e. we call it a 'cheap' car here, but they're actually selling it for more here, than they are there. The questionable quality part shouldn't be reflected entirely on price.
Will they last as long as a european car, probably not. I don't know. But the same argument was said about Japanese cars when they came… then Korean car… now Jap cars are the benchmark and charging premiums
I'm not a car guy so I don't know the nuances, so happy to get feedback. I just see similarities in the early 2000's when Kia and Hyundai were joke cars, but now there's viewed as solid.
@Zitane: I don't know where you got your data, but the fact is that auto manufacturing workers in China earn no less than 6,000 RMB per month. With inevitable overtime work and various subsidies, their income can reach 10,000 RMB and more.
German auto manufacturing workers earn 5,600 USD per month on average.
@Zitane: Additionally, it should be emphasized that China's personal income tax burden on salaried workers is incredibly low compared to Europe, while its standard consumption tax rate is only 6% (excluding various subsidies).
It is crazy how having these warning systems improves their safety score even it if is useless and doesnt work well. It much be on by default when the car is started…

Yeah, the RAV4 cruiser hybrid is similar to the Haval H6 ultra hybrid but it costs an additional $12.5k and has a smaller warranty with less tech than the Haval! Absolute rip off which is why everyone's swapping over to Chinese cars.

Worth remembering that the Hybrid Jolion has a comically small boot due to it having a different rear suspension setup to the regular petrol model. I probably wouldn't go for this if I was in the market. Can find ~2 year old H6 hybrids for similar money, still with 5 years warranty, would be a much better car overall if you insist on having a hybrid.

Chery was well known for their problems and had to exit the Australian market. Since they've re-entered, a lot of new buyers are still reporting lots of problems. You're really risking it with a Chery, better off waiting until they've proven that they have fixed up the quality issues.
Caught an Uber in one of these recently - was impressed by how comfortable it was as a passenger. Comfy seat and hardly felt the road.
I had a rental and found very comfy and good, in fact, I am considering to buy it over toyoga given its features and price.

Recently CarExpert gave a 'good' rating for MG3 despite:
"The MG 3 was revving that hard because of a bizarre issue we encountered on a drive through the mountains, one we’ve experienced in the related ZS Hybrid+ before.
It occurred multiple times when the battery readout in the instrument cluster displayed just one bar. This should in theory make the petrol engine do the heavy lifting, and yet the first time this happened – admittedly on a pretty steep grade – I was pressing the accelerator pedal firmly but it wouldn’t go above 35km/h.
It gained more battery charge during the drive, but again when it dropped down to one bar the vehicle experienced a significant loss of power. This time, with my foot damn near welded to the floor, the vehicle wouldn’t go above 54km/h.
A spirited mountain drive is hardly going to be a common driving scenario for an MG 3, but we’re concerned there are far more common driving scenarios where this loss of power could occur and prove dangerous. Imagine trying to overtake another vehicle and not being able to get up to the speed limit.
A fix has been introduced for the ZS, but thus far MG has yet to announce timing for a fix for the MG 3 despite it used the same hybrid system."
Some of the Australian reviews are just too short to pickup issues with these new models.
Mind you these are the same guys that salivate over eurotrash. And also the small issue of euro tariffs basically make this thing so uncompetitive it's not funny i mean it STARTS AT $50k aud over there. No wonder they marked it down so far because it's literally going up against mid end SUV's.
Luckily we don't have a manufacturing industry with lobbyists to whine when something competitive comes to market.

Driven plenty of these as rental cars for work. Refuse to accept them now, the driving "assistance" is straight up dangerous, especially on country roads.

It's not bing bongs - it's random steering corrections, random braking, just horrible. I couldn't find a way to disable it permanently, every time you turn the cars on and off, it's all back on.
No car brand allows them to be turned off permanently, I believe this is part of the ancap testing thingy. As far as I know you need to turn them off every time you stop and start the car. I've had similar issues with rental Toyota's by the way ..but they are probably better than these in that department.
I drove a Haval Jolion Premium for 2 weeks whilst on holidays in New Zealand 10 months ago. Interior looks great, the large infotainment screen was vibrant and snappy (the menus were a maze though) and for the most part, things overall worked just as well as any of the other 30-40 cars i've driven. However, before purchasing one of these cars, I strongly encourage you to thoroughly test drive one to make sure you aren't surprised by the lackluster feel, dynamics and the driving quirks. The random alerts that don't give a corresponding message (I did check for a list of beep codes in the user manual), cruise control applying brakes on the highway for slight corners (sharply dropping to 70km/h in a 100km/h zone is not safe. There wasn't a safety sign suggesting a speed lower than 100km/h was appropriate and if there wasn't a speed sign, I would have gone 110-115km/h without issue. Also, the roads were dual carriageway highways with lanes clearly marked and thankfully there were no other vehicles nearby at the 3-4 times different it ocurred. I stopped using cruise control as a work around.), forced "safety controls" that you can't disable (a quick shoulder check before changing lanes makes the car safety system unhappy) - these are the main ones I can remember.

All cars have ADAS and no manufacturer has perfected adas. It was enforced by ancap based on premature technology. All new cars have to have ADAS if they want 5 star ancap.
Some manufacturers have put a button on the home screen to turn it off but by law it has to revert back to on everytime you start the car.
Adaptive cruise control / integrated cruise control and Traffic jam assist can be buggy if they offer it.
I don't hear people complaining with Mazdas or Toyotas. I hear Paul from CarExpert always criticising the Chinese makers and if possible always turned them off when test driving their cars.
Yeah can tell you haven't done research. It's across the board - Toyota, ford, Mitsubishi, Kia, Hyundai etc etc. I believe the only mazda car that has these new features is the cx-80 because the rest are 8 year old cars being sold as new.
Mahindra also doesn't have these features which is why its 0 ancap safety rating and the Mg5 might be similar.

People who own the car have the tendency to protect it and brag how good they are, which is understandable. Oh btw, I don't own any Mazda or Toyota, not at least in the last 5 years.
Some vehicle manufacturers must interpret ADAS as Autonomous Distracting Annoyance Specifications, because the system doesn't work as intended.

My neighbours have 2 jolions and they seem to enjoy it. We have a Chery tiggo 7 pro Ultimate and it's a great faultless car which has more luxury than GWM - was $10,000 more than GWM.
GWM has been around 2 years longer than Chery this time around..both are safe purchases.

It's great hes done a lot about exposure to obd hacks and car theft but unless you have $105,000-$160,000 to spend on a car you're not finding a perfect car. Starting point would be a Nissan patrol warrior with Australia's largest warranty of 10 years.

The claimed fuel economy is 5.1. drive.com.au tested it in a range of conditions and arrived at 7L/100km, way worse than a corolla hybrid, getting close to a petrol only car.

I have considered all these factors, did test drives of several cars and finally spent $28 k for a Mazda Maxx Sport 2.5 lt AWD KF 2023 with 50 km on it last month. A solid, Japan made, practical car with 5 years warranty. Very happy.

For what it's worth I purchased a haval jolion 3 years ago it hasn't missed a beat Great car at great price. No issues.
My sincere apology to all. I made a typo in my original post and that created confusion. With a budget of 30K I looked at new and near new car options. Then I paid $28k for a 2023 Mazda Maxx Sport 2.5 l i-Activ AWD KF4WL with a milage of 50,000 km on it. This was in early June from a reputable Sydney dealership. The car was used by a rental company and had 4 consecutive services done (for every 10K). I had pre-purchase inspection done ($299), they spent 1.5 hours on it to conduct the thorough checking and gave me go ahead. A well maintained, solid, Japan made car. I have 3.5 years of original warranty and roadside assist left with it. I have been using this car since then and very happy with my choice. Again, I am very sorry.

The fuel economy isn't the only difference between these models though. the hybrid also provides a more enjoyable city driving experience and much better suspension in my testing.
