My aversion to spurious marketing prevents me believing brand creator Filip Tysander truly encountered that Englishman. I contend Daniel Wellington is a mythical creature like the Loch Ness Monster and of course neil. Imagine my surprise when WatchNerd PM’d me saying …

There are some low prices on Timex watches at Amazon & suddenly they seem to all ship here now. I am so busy archiving my Daniel Wellington collection for insurance purposes – 14 hours yet still on letter E – I don't have time to post a deal, so you can if you want.

… or words to that effect. Most are familiar due to not shipping to Australia when I researched 100 TIMEX Watches. At least this concealed me from Kylie Minogue’s perennial obsessive stalking. It’s hardly my fault I’m the best she’s ever had.

    MORNING!

Awesome deals there PJC, you really are trying to make me but a watch aren't you!

    • +2

*buy. So that J.Springs didn't suit you?

      • +1

Ah yes Josette Springs, she was nice, the French are a very nice people…

        Oh thanks PJC.
        I bought crypto instead 😁..

        • +2

You're getting so rich I'll have to compile another watches deal suitable for discriminating bourgeoisie such as yourself.

        • +2

          @PJC: Proletariat!😂

Similar but different model, mostly due to the strap. Included as No. 02a. Thank you.

      • +1

        Now it's No. 04.

    • +2

I thought it said cheapskate too

    Upvoted on post description alone.

Reported for invalid upvote, it's been nice knowing you.

#1 is just the thing for a Plastic Fantastic lover…

    • +2

Confess. How many of those did you buy?

  • +1

    Thanks for the effort PJC.

Unrelated to the deal - where in Australia can one buy a brand new genuine Rolex Submariner (Reference: 114060)? Authorised Dealers in my capital city have a long wait list.

    • Which city? Have you tried Swiss Concept at Hurstville?

      • Perth, only 3 AD's here unforuntatley

    • +3

Here for US$8,495. Hurry before Wystri Warrick snaps it up.

      • +1

        Good old Jomashop!

Only issues: The price is above the AU RRP of $9450 :(, plus warranty will be through Jomashop and not Rolex?

Thank you for the link though!

        • Would you really buy a 10 grand Rolex on line? Too risky since fakes are nearly perfect today

  • +2

Nice post, also the yellow strap Global Shock is close to it's lowest price on Camel.
    US$18.74 + $5.74 Shipping

Just be aware these have a resin lens, whereas the Casio G-Shocks all have mineral, hence the price difference.

    • +1

Thank you. Added as the new No. 1.

  • +2

Great read about DW! Thanks PJC.

    • You're welcome.

  • +4

Great use of the deascription, PJC!

Will Matte Black be the new Daniel Wellington?

    • +5

      No. Sockpuppets don't purchase.

  • Please link directly to the deal in future and not a picture. Thanks.

    • +4

Will do. On a previous post I didn't get the Amazon product picture for several hours, so it seemed practical to link to an image elsewhere. Is Daniel Wellington real too?

  • +2

Just a caution for the inexperienced, many of these watches are merely splash-proof, even though they may say something like "water resistant to 30 metres" which is obviously misleading, though that is the industry practice. This is something several of the Timex have in common with say overpriced quartz fashion watches.

The OP has also only listed a comparison with the RRP, which watches generally are rarely sold at. While that may give some sense of value between watches of the same brand (assuming a consistent and rational RRP pricing policy), it's best to check camelcamelcamel and other sources to get a better perspective on price evolution. For these reasons the "% off" figures listed are best ignored as they also have the potential to mislead.

  • +3

Thanks PJC. Great deals on all the watches, plus a hilarious write up to kick off the OP.
    A most entertaining read.
    Well done.

    • +3

You're welcome as always. Good to see you around.

      • +3

Likewise. I'm tempted to get the Yacht Racer, it's got quite the look. I could perhaps use it to aid my mathematical adventures.

        • +2

Yes, it looks impressive. For some reason I too like orange dials. I bought this for $40 in 2016.

        • +2

          MathNerd

I could perhaps use it to aid my mathematical adventures.

          So that's where Scab's been.

  • For these reasons the "% off" figures listed are best ignored as they also have the potential to mislead.

No. 02 is currently $36.66 shipped at Amazon. This Australian website currently charges $249 and even $279 and they call that "A Celebration Of Time".

    • Yes, bodying, your favoured "comparison" site on this occasion, is notorious for their overpriced watches, but i doubt they "charge" anyone that as i doubt they're selling any.

You have also assumed that the bodying advertised price is the RRP, which is not necessarily the case, though the RRP may be difficult to find.

As i said, Camel is the most reliable guide, and this shows a more typical price which is no where near your claimed RRP.

I have not commented on the prices themselves, or whether they are good. What i did say is comparing the price to your presumed RRP is best ignored, and that's because it is essentially meaningless and very obviously misleading.

Despite all this you had to be firmly encouraged by the Mods following several complaints to be more clear in what was represented by the "% off" figure, given your long repeated history of not making that clear.

But what you have remains misleading - it's not "% off" anything - and the RRP's you do show are assumptions.

You are relentless on this site for criticising and voting down deals posted by others, yet remarkably thin-skinned if someone is to criticise anything you say or post. You are assisted by a core group of unquestioning sycophants, who vote down any comment deemed critical. The comments being voted down are sometimes the most incisive.

This has recently reached hypocritical levels, given how you based a negative vote in part on the vendor's reference to 'water resistance', yet here you are linking to retailers that engage in exactly the same phrasing without yourself providing any clarity.

You post many watch deals, and there's considerable work in doing that. But this doesn't entitle you to breach the same rules you seem to set for others.

      • If you consider my post is misleading press the Report button and inform the Moderators. You can also stick hot pins in this $2.14 accurate miniature (H03) of me while chanting my username backwards. I don't mind. Damn, they were recently $1.82, sorry about that.

        • -3

          Sure, i'll do that.

          Dear Mods,

I believe there's a serious issue with how @PJC is representing both the RRP and the "% off RRP", given:

          1. The RRP is assumed, based on a different vendor specifically selected by the OP.

          2. The "% off RRP" is no such thing since there is no basis for claiming that RRP.

          3. Even if it was the RRP, as the item is never sold at that price by the linked vendor, that discount is illusory and therefore misleading.

Moderator @hamza mentioned most of these issues in March, by noting:

the % off discount is compared to a different retailers price (not the retailer the deal is for)

          and

that price it's being compared to isn't actually a price they are actually selling at or it.

These issues remain and are not resolved by simply adding "RRP" to the "% off" line.

Take for example item 2 in his list. Amazon shows a usual price of USD 74.95, yet the OP used an RRP of AUD 249.00 selected from site bodying, even though that may have nothing to do with the RRP.

Many people will access OzBargain without going through all the posts - they will see the link and mostly just follow that. They in particular will be misled by the OP's approach. Members often talk about Misleading & Deceptive conduct under consumer law, and the OP's approach is little different.

I would ask that you advise the OP to not reference the RRP unless they have clear evidence as to what it actually is, and even if they do have it not to indicate "% off" figures given they do not represent a percentage off anything real. If any comparison is to be made, at least with Amazon items, it should be the price timeline provided by Camel.

Here is the link to Talk With A Mod (TWAM) forum.

Welcome to Ozbargain. Please learn to be civil because trash-talking only gets you so far.

        • @TheGhostWhoWalks:

Best to discuss this in the recent site discussion forum about RRP instead of this deal.

        • -3

          @sky blu:

Where exactly have I been uncivil @skyblu? Was it my core group of unquestioning sycophants line? Thanks for the prompt, as I’ll expand on that.

I know that there’s a pack, sorry cohort, of maybe 7-10 members that are actively communicating/colluding via some back-channel. I don’t know exactly how you’re doing it, but I know you’re doing it. Maybe it’s via the “Start a Conversation” link. I know it’s happening via pattern recognition. I’d say it’s internal to OzBargain, and if so the Mods will have visibility. It’s possible it’s an external collaborative site, but I doubt it.

The trigger-happy @PJC usually leads with negging a deal, and the usual suspects then pile in behind, often so correlated in time that it cannot be easily explained otherwise. It’s a hit squad – negging both the deal and comments. Check out the deals that he’s negged, and then look at the timeline for other negs for that deal. It’s all listed. Looks coordinated to me. But that’s not the clincher. The clincher is it’s not only watch posts, but other marginal posts that most members wouldn’t even bother with, and you have the same pattern: @PJC comes in, and the usual suspects soon after correlated in time. Not a bad piece of analysis hey @MathNerd?

Anyone prepared to deny it? @PJC? @skyblu? I can see both of you are members. No, of course not, but nor will you admit it as your online reputations would implode. You’ll either ignore this, or send off another effigy/pins decoy, more on civility, that kind of thing.

Not much of it happening in this post though, and I think I know why. Most members of the cohort agree with what I say. Only @PJC conjures RRP’s – no one else – not @skyblu, not @WatchNerd – just @PJC.

        • -3

          @neil:

          Hi Neil,

I wasn’t aware of that discussion, and in any case it doesn’t deal with my first two points. That discussion assumes the RRP’s are real rather than conjured – I was doing it myself a moment ago - easy to do. So I’ll continue here for now unless diverted.

I can see the Mods @neil and @hamza are pretty capable, and you’ll have at least practical expertise on what’s misleading. The issue is not a matter of ‘posting guidelines’, it’s a matter of law. OzBargain is engaged in ‘trade and commerce’ – you’re a gateway site to retailers and earn income via affiliate associations. I can see that, which is fine. But because of that you’re captured by the misleading or deceptive conduct provisions as you’re allowing these posts to remain on your site. Yes, OzBargain is breaching consumer law, and you should get together with whoever owns this site and stop the practice.

There’s no need for conjuring RRP’s. @WatchNerd and others manage perfectly well without doing that. If you allow the status quo – select an item, search the web for the highest price, claim that as the RRP, and then claim it’s a certain “% off RRP”, even though it may be twice it’s historical average – then others will follow. You’ll need to deal with it at some stage and I suggest now is the time before OzBargain itself becomes subject to an ACCC complaint.

          Cheers,

          discourteous; impolite.

If you have a problem with a deal post, you can lodge your complaint(s) to have it reviewed by a moderator. You are uncivil when you leave negative comments that are unrelated to the deal post itself, even when you are advised of how to report and contact a mod via TWAM forum.

It seems that you have a problem with certain members on Ozbargain, however you have only joined this website barely a month, and have diligently learnt all the patterns of commenting, positive and negative voting - what is your agenda on Ozbargain? PJC, WatchNerd and other long-time members are recognised because of their helpful comments and contribution to this community. Respect is earned, not freely given, and oftentimes works on a mutual basis. You want yours? Put in the time and find good deals for everyone. Submit deal posts that you think are bargains and let the community decide.

You want to roast on PJC's post and accuse him of conjuring RRP? Please report your findings to the mods. Here is a comment from a mod that use one of PJC's watch deal posts as an example that discounts off RRP is acceptable. PJC has submitted deal posts on over 600 watches, on this post alone there are 79 upvotes and counting. Do you think it only takes a minute to compile information to submit a post? Ludicrous.

What is with the trash-talking about a pack/cohort/"core group of unquestioning sycophants"? You mad, bro? Well, START one! What's stopping you? Invite all your friends and relatives and ask them to blindly upvote on all your comments and posts? Or spend the time using all the web proxies in the world to create multiple Ozbargain accounts? Point is - nobody cares. If you post a great bargain and get massively upvoted, GOOD FOR YOU. If you submit a rubbish post, then you will get negged to oblivion.

You want to publicly call PJC out, start a forum post about his posting behaviour, let's hear what everyone says.

          @sky blu:

Very interesting @skyblu, but only as:

          1. You chose not to take the opportunity to deny you and others engage/organise via a back-channel. That’s called confirmation by omission. Too easy.

          2. You haven’t dealt with my real objection – taking inflated advertised prices from carefully selected sites and taking that as the RRP, then claiming “% off RRP”. That’s equivalent to conjuring, and nothing you say rebuts that.

          3. The rest of your post attempts to introduce a raft of red herrings. Nice try, but no banana. No, I’m taking the bait to discuss presumed attitudes of members, effort with posts, other avenues, etc. I give a little more credit to the ability of members than you do, that’s for sure.

And try to be civil – “You mad, bro?” is discourteous and impolite. I’m not your bro, and that’s no denial.

I’m happy to wait well into next week to give the Moderators a chance to review their position. But right now Diana, Hero and Devil are waiting for me.

I know it’s happening via pattern recognition.

          pattern recognition

Well done, I think you've cracked it!

Was it just you working to crack the code or did you have a team working with you?

One things for sure, it's definitely not that there are long time members that can spot a dodgy deal a mile off.

There aren't members on this site that have a lot of knowledge on certain products, like watches, that can spot a seller who has bought a bunch of watches on AliExpress for a few bucks and are trying to hock them off for 10 times that price, or more.

These members probably aren't leaving negative votes to warn other members of these dodgy deals. They are probably doing it to keep the watch deals all to themselves. They also are probably only putting other current watch deals in their listing to cover their tracks.

It's so obvious if you really, really think about it.

Although there is the other thing you have considered

We should all really be grateful you've come along and after only a couple of weeks of being a member, you can tell a site that has been around for over a decade and their mods, some who have been here just as long, how they should be running their site.

You sure don't look stupid doing that. No siree.

Though being so new, let me share some interesting history of this site with you.

In the past there have been some sellers, who buy cheap goods or drop ship from sites like AliExpress.
Those sellers then try and sell those goods on OzBargain. But they don't end up selling a bunch of goods here like they hoped.
Instead, eagle eyed members spot what they are doing and leave them negative votes, to warn other members. As allowed by the voting guidelines.

You see, we are all here for the cheapest prices available, and if you're sourcing goods from sites like Ali Express your prices won't be the cheapest, and other members need to know this.

Sometimes sellers also get negative votes for not following Merchant Guidelines

Those sellers sometimes also have other accounts, pretending to be other members, so they can leave positive votes on their listings. This is called Sockpuppeting. But I'm sure I don't need to tell you that

Sometimes these sellers get all 😭😭 and disgruntled and use a sock puppet account and start to target and harass members that have left them a negative vote.

These sellers are what we call sad and pathetic.

          Like really, really pathetic.

And just to add my $0.02 on the whole RRP discussion:

Who cares? I'm not here to pay RRP, I only care that the price is the cheapest currently available.

        • -2

          @xev:

Looks like i need to modify my response.

To answer your questions: yes I did that all on my own; another non-denial denial; and more red herrings.

You claim I’m a sockpuppet for Matte Black. That’s a pretty serious allegation. What evidence do you have for that? Not air, evidence. If you’re concerns are genuine, have you raised them with the Mods? I did reference earlier criticism of their deals in their last post (you can’t see it now it seems). Did you notice that?

Like @skyblu you’ve avoided the core issue.

My motives are pretty obvious - I’m concerned about people (not only members) being misled by the “% off RRP” figures, esp as there’s no proof the figures being used are in fact the RRP.

          Cheers,
