      lol, lol…

        lololololol

  • I heard that you now need a core i7 and a gtx 1080ti to read jv's comments.

    • +5

You actually need a core i9 128gbs of ddr4 ram and two titan Vs in SLI

  • +1

    Can it run Crysis?

    • +5

By itself no, but with a GPU yes.

      • Can it run starcraft 1 or warcraft 3 by itself?

  • +4

    This computer's so old I'm surprised it doesn't have a 3.5" FDD.

    • Pretty sure there’s a slot for it.

      • +1

There is a physical slot for it under the optical drive.

My Packard Bell with Intel Pentium 200mhz with MMX Tech, 32MB of RAM, 2GB HDD, 33.6K modem cost my parents $1999.
It came with a computer desk and chair from Harvey Norman.

PS. My friend had a 56K modem and a CD burner. I was so jelly.

    • +1

      Good times!

    • -1

That price doesn't sound right to me. A computer with those specifications would have sold for more than $2500 back then. By the sound of it, it would have been bought in 1997.

    • +1

Gee a 2GB HDD that was huge back in those days.

  • +1

    Core 2 8400?

    • -1

      core 4 420

  • Core 2 duo… That's my 12 yr old laptop. Rip.

Could probably run Linux OK tho

    Or Google chrome

    • +1

I have an old Core 2 laptop and installed Windows 10. Works well

      • +1

It works, but 'well' is subjective. Sure it can run, but when you can get an i5 6500u 8gb ram and 256gb Acer for 300….you can keep your core 2 duo I suppose

        • Where do you get that?

        • @combatant:

I can get 4 of these for that price.

        • @wooldogs:

Yer I know, but who would want 4?
Just wanting to see if he can back up his claim of where he got that.

        • @combatant:

EBay deal. Was an auction and no-one bid. Dolby audio wasn't working but I was able to reinstall it. no issues and not frustrated with waiting for windows to start or any programs actually.

Can do multiple tabs of chrome while watching YouTube and having office open, and lots more.

Good for everyone that they're happy with their system

        • @mbck:
Nice. A few gens behind what you got but I purchased a system for myself from ebay with i5-2540m, 8gb ram and 500gb hdd for $110, just waiting for it to arrive and I'll slap in a 120gb ssd ive got on my desk. Should be pretty decent.

        • @wooldogs: wow nice is that a laptop, tablet or what.. I just bought a Dell venue pro 11 with 4gb ram and i5 4300Y for like $270 AUD delivered second hand but good condition.. feel slightly ripped off now and kinda wish I had hunted for longer but after a recent war 3 lan party session my war 3 custom map days are tingling.. gonna a buy some old school legit cd keys or boxes and go back to my childhood tablet Windows style..

Looking for the best options to handheld some old games this was the best on short notice.

I get my new baby this Friday but I feel like I could have gotten better.

Might build a desktop and then stream games to it later down the road. It's a start. My last desktop had a 4850 in it yeah.. It's been a longtime

      • Still using my Business grade Travelmate 5720 core2 right now. Hd2600. Albeit it's T9300 so near top of Core2. Also Win10 pro but had to workaround to get the GPU running.

    • +3

I am typing this with my 10+ years old Core 2 Duo Dell desktop which is running on Windows 10 pro, no problem at all.

      • I know right. Great little system.

        • Sure it is. Just put SSD, all good though.

        • +2

          @Winman:

yep Core 2's still have their uses. Got a free 'broken' Thinkpad R61e with a crappy celeron 550 in it. Had a fan error so took out the fan and cleaned it, $5 t8300 CPU from ebay, cheap SSD and whacked in 4GB of RAM i already had laying around. Perfect laptop for the kids, and is actually pretty snappy running win 10 pro.

        • @combatant: I'm typing this comment on a Thinkpad R61 with win 10. as fast as the system I use in the office

        • @combatant: Did the same thing as well except it was a acer laptop, wish I knew it was upgradeable years ago…. Did the old fan rattle badly? Thats why I had to replace mine. I think I put a t9300 in mine tho and installed linux, works great!

        • @Forfiet:
Fan wasnt spinning up, so would display an error on boot. Cleaned out the dust and relubed the bearing. Good as new! Grabbed a cheap replacement fan off ebay for a few bucks though just in case it does fail again

Looked at the t9300 but was 4x the cost of the t8300 for negligible performance difference. SSD was a must. Had to install a modded bios to get sata2 speeds, but was worth the effort and I'm surprised how well the system actually performs. Was a fun little project.

      • +1

core2duo is a great system. Still running flawlessly with windows 10 and an upgraded graphics card

  • +1

can I buy this one and use the window CDkey on my PC ?

    • Not unless you want to try calling MS and claim a transfer - the OEM key will be tied to the motherboard.

      • Juust says I want to do that. Does it cost extra ? And what is the probability of my success?

        • I appreciate the faith you have in me, but i don't know.
But if i were in your shoes, smelly as they are, i would just buy a cheap OEM key online. That's what i do.

        • @AngryChicken:

i would just buy a cheap OEM key online

Yeah the thing is that many ozbargain point out that those keys probably illegal or illegitimate one

          Thank you though

        • +1

@frewer: At most it's a contract breach - big deal - God will forgive you as will i. No SWAT team is about to break down your door. Ignore the whining on here about that - hell it's MS you're short-changing - that deserves praise, not crucifixion. If it starts failing, buy another one for a few dollars. And make sure it's the Pro version so you can disable the automatic updates (assuming you're after Win 10).

Someone made a custom bios that allowed the CPU to be replaced by Xeon processors which were considered 'copies' of potential CPU upgrades available for the PC. These upgrades include quad core processors that significantly provides a performance boost over this processor. These CPUs can be had for around $15 on eBay.

    https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-OptiPlex-360-380-760-…

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-Xeon-X3323-LGA771-2-5GHz-6M… - This is the best CPU available for the PC.

  • +2

I wouldn't touch this with a barge pole.

You only need to pay a few dollars more and you can get something a lot better - i bought a Dell 790 USFF with a i3-2120 just a couple of months ago for a little more than this…

    • Agreed…
You can find better stuff than this in hard rubbish!

  • This is a bargain for those who is looking for a genuine window 7 pro license.

    • Not really - wouldn't it be a OEM key, meaning it won't work on a different computer?

      • Dat iz correct.

  • +1

I got one of these for $40 last weekend. Chucked an SSD in and it's great! Plex is fine and it does everything I need.

    • Where from?

    • In fact, I put an SSD and 3tb 3.5" in by removing the CD drive and hooking that up to the SSD. SSD is my boot and 3tb media storage.

  • +1

Funny thing is i was running the same machine, although the larger form factor, until a cpl weeks ago when i purchased the HP/Compaq deal here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354830 only used as a media Mine even has the FDD still installed, LOL… Still have my win98 bootdisk handy :)

Best part was I simply swapped out the HDD & it booted no probs… Win 8.1 fyi..

  • +2

Good enough for a media pc/storage. I have a core 2 duo desktop running kodi on ubuntu, with dual dtv tuners too. Almost cost me nothing.

  • Lol can this run warcraft 3, starcraft 1 and a few other older titles at 1080p? Might pick some up for a lan if possible.

    • It will easily run War3 and SC1.

      But SC1 is 480p only.

      • What about SC1 remastered?

        • No chance.

You would have to add a dedicated GPU.

        • @coxymla: could a 940 MX handle SC remastered.. just surveying my options.

        • @AlienC: I don't know how SCRM runs on low end graphics, but that is above the minimum specs.

  • +1

Something something price jacking no deals… oh sorry wrong post. Awesome deal OP!

  • I use a similar system (Optiplex 380) as a media TV-PC with a slim HDMI gpu installed along with an SSD and it works flawlessly.
You can also upgrade it straight to Windows 10 Pro with a ISO file from their website.

  • Do your bit for the environment and recycle one of these bad boys for the good of everyone…

  • Same ones they use at my work.
It's amusing to see the retail value per unit.

Already said but can confirm that a Core 2 Duo with a SSD runs really well for things like surfing the web, writing documents, and any other non-intensive task. I have a 2007 C2D laptop with a SSD, 4GB RAM and Windows 10 is running really well.

Amazingly you can still play games on it if you buy a GPU, but don't expect and average fps higher than 30fps. The video below shows people playing modern games on a C2D, with a 950 2GB RAM, at medium settings with fps around 30 to 40 fps typically.

My two Pentium Ms are still running Dell 610s w/win10!
My 5 series desktop has been puled out (RAM issue) but was running ESX with linux, W7 and GNS3/linux. (not all VMs at the same time!)

ESX5 works with these machines, ESX6 is a bit more fussy. Someone else can advise.
If you optimise some of the W10 services you can get it quite fast (just not compared with a ryzen and M2 drive 3 sec boot)

  • Would this fit a gtx 960?

    • Low profile cards only.

    • If you want to use it for gaming, wait for another deal with atleast a sandybridge i5 or i7. But yes only low profile cards will fit.

  • This is what I received 6 months ago as an upgrade to my office computer. Log in, go make a coffee, sit down, check diary, finish coffee, now you may use this computer.

  • hmm could this function as a cheap NAS? It has gigabit ethernet.
How many drive bays does it have??

    • You could buy this, a SATA PCIe card, and the cheapest ATX case from MSY and put together a decent NAS.

  • still available
