In fact with 2x 128GB instead of new 1x 256GB storage it does some things better than M2 MacBook Air.

    • +3

does some things better than M2

      Y mean like storage benchmarks..?

    • I had the m1 and now the m2
The m2 is much better than the m1
With exception of the speakers everything seems better on the m2 for normal use

      • if you are talking about the 256gb its actually slower on the m2, however the 512gb yes indeed is faster but really not noticeable in day to day unless you use it for compiling where you shave a few seconds on compiling

        • Yes correct
And for reference the m1 is advertised with a “super speed ssd” but the m2 isn’t

I've gotta tell you I'm not an Apple fan, but for the kids going to high school these are the best bang for your buck (which really surprised me). I couldn't find an equivalent PC with the same weight, battery life & speed. First time buying a MAC.

    Good price :)

    • +3

      Agreed.

      Hate Apple, love this laptop

      • +1

Hated Apple, loved this laptop, now I own a freaking iPad and iPhone too… WTF happened to me.

      • -1

Lol, you've bought an equivalent product from an organisation with a questionable track record.

The fact that your here making this statement while not knowing about the product you bought just goes to show that you sold your soul to Bill.

        • Fill us in on Microsoft's questionable track record? I know they may not have perfectly met everyone's moral stances since inception but I'm not aware of anything to be wary of in recent years?

      • +2

We use surface devices at work, that was my first choice but the battery is the issue. Real world it's 3hrs max with a surface, these are double.

Battery is the No1 in school.

        • +1

The battery is triple real-world use… easily. Battery on this thing is just insane.

    • +1

This was my first Apple computer. Best purchase ever. The thing is amazing.

    • It's a great laptop for sure and I agree it's hard to find a PC competitor but I wouldn't want to spend the same money on a 2 year old laptop as when it was released (same price as Apple AOC). If Apple dropped its price when they introduced the M2 version such that it became ~$1000 through AOC it would be a no brainer.

Plus 8GB RAM is a joke and not nearly enough for most people.

      • 8GB RAM on PC is a joke and not nearly enough for most people.

  • -2

I can already hear the screams and cries of horror with the 8GB RAM

Waaah Waaah should be 32GB for the price ahhh!

    • -2

“Why is Apple still solvent by selling this product that should have been bankrupt years ago ahhhhhhhhhhh Android FTW? “

    • +4

I can already hear vehement refute - less RAM is a-ok on MacOS. Err, nope.

      • And all the posters above saying it's an amazing laptop? Guess they are all just misled?

      • +4

It really is though, biggest reason why Linux Distros work fine on low RAM machines. Performance of windows based laptops vs the integrated system of Apple devices with lower RAM, Apple still wins. It all depends on their memory management system and integration with other hardware/software. Why you think iPhones have such little RAM vs Android counterparts. More =\= better performance. Windows vs Windows YES. MacOS vs Windows? NO.

    • +6

My mid-2014 Macbook Pro has 8GB of RAM… it's amazing that the base model RAM hasn't increased in 8 years.

      • That 8Gb is significantly faster though. For my mum who uses little else besides a browser, it’s fine. Given the Pro part of the name, it should have more. 8gb would not be enough for me doing software dev.

      • Mid 2014 MacBook Pro owner here too!

I'm thinking of getting a new MacBook but the thought of getting the same amount of ram as 8 years ago is pretty challenging

    • +2

Many phones have close to or more than 8 GB. Base model with 256GB??? Let’s see in a few years that these entry level laptops can’t run the latest MacOs SomeRandomUSMountain because of lack of memory/storage.

      • So what if phones have 8GB ram? Phones use ram differently to laptops/PCs as they're solving different problems.

Yeah, I'd be really concerned if the OS took up 8GB ram or 256gb storage on its own.

        • +1

Yes, phones have just one main app running in the foreground.
It is supposed that on a laptop, especially a “Pro” one, you use more apps to do “pro” stuff other than watching YouTube videos. I get it, having 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is courageous just like pushing that damn touch bar nobody asked for.

          • @ALBastru: This offer is for the MacBook Air, not the MacBook Pro….. The MacBook Pro I am typing this on has 64GB of ram.

            • @dtpearson: I mentioned entry level Macbooks Pros or Amateurs ones. Of course you can order a +$10000 one that is future proof but I do think that in 2022 the entry level one should be better equipped.

    • +3

Man dont be that guy, 8gb is enough

      • -5

No it's not? My Samsung Ultrabook is 11 years old with 8GB

It struggles with all my open chrome tabs.

        It's not enough for anything.

        • +5

          Your Samsung runs Mac?

        • +4

          That's 11 year old hardware.

Have you narrowed the issue down to ram?

The CPU would be lower performance compared to any modern PC.

Is it running a comparable SSD to the M1 MBA or even any other modern PC?

Have you cleaned dust from the system?

How's the install of Windows? Have you dealt with background tasks?

          • @ihfree: I7, ssd HDD.

I can see it struggling with the ram.

Every apple nut hugger negged me, I don't even care but I never said apple sucked. I said 8gb ram sucks.

Just shows who the real whiners are on here.

            • @[Deactivated]: 2nd gen? I have an Asus 2nd gen i7(4c8t), 16gb ram. It feels slow compared to a modern machine even with a clean install of Windows. When you look at the single threaded performance, the machine feeling slow is completely understandable.

Does your Samsung have a mech HDD by any chance?

At the very least, you should be comparing to a modern machine otherwise, I hate to say it but you're just a whining about your outdated tech.

        • +5

Mistake number one, Samsung. Mistake number two, Chrome.

          • @Fancydancer: It's never caused me a single issue, at the time of release the thinnest Ultrabook globally.cost me 1k new from some Asian kid in Sydney, was 2k retail.

            Probably "hot*

        • +1

Remember that Apple silicon has its RAM integrated with the CPU which helps make it surprisingly snappy, but that also means it costs more to manufacture compared to standard desktop RAM.

IMO it's enough for light-moderate work (e.g. Browser + Spotify + PDF/Word document), but will start slowing down when you have ~10 browser tabs open along with multiple PDF/Word documents; just don't expect to be playing games or doing any heavy multi-tasking.

The huge jump in price for the 16GB RAM model is mainly to squeeze extra $$$ outta people that wanna use the laptop as their primary computer, but as a portable secondary computer I reckon 8GB is barely tolerable.

          • @Zilch: I edit 4k videos in Resolve on my 8GB Air, and export them etc, mind you, I only have maybe 4-5 different layers of anything in there, but it runs without hiccups or stutters.

        • +1

Knew this comment was coming. Lol

          • +3

@seerious: Because it's a fact. 8GB is only good for light work. Why do so many get almost offended by this? 16GB should be the base now.
Also, the real cost difference between 8 and 16GB of ram is negligible.

            • +7

@SimAus007: I don't know what you guys are all doing with your laptops? My daily driver is a 16" MacBook Pro with 64GB of ram, and the ONLY time I find it significantly quicker than the kids 8GB RAM M1 Air is when I am working on a 4K video timeline or hundreds of +100MB RAW files in Lightroom (then that extra RAM is great).

An 8GB RAM M1 MacBook Air is perfect for 95% of people normal use, I just don't understand why the "PC experts" keep trying to convince everyone else that this laptop will be intolerably slow as soon as you open a few web browser tabs.

              • @dtpearson: There will always be hardware comparisons but I have found universal praise for the base model M1 MacBook Air in YouTube reviews. Obviously if you want to use Windows 11 or Linux then perhaps look for another laptop.
I bought this for my wife as she has an aging iPad and I believe the Air would be better suited for her needs, especially when it can also run many iPad apps as well.

No one is saying that.. What a straw man.

        • You should be happy that 11 year old hardware is still.working ;)

    • +6

No. I just wish they’d stop selling laptops with 8 GB.

      • +2

Don't like 8gb laptops? Don't buy one, it's that simple.

    • Rent free

  • +1

This isn’t any cheaper than that edu store link that works without an edu email

  • +3

What I find so strange is that even outside of this promotion, you cannot even pick up a model with more than 8 GB in store.

Recently wanted to buy a 16 GB model of the M2 MacBook Air at JB HiFi and they told me that I’d have to order from Apple directly. Worse, I think JB also only sold the much-critiqued model with the crippled SSD speed.

I don’t mind the price difference to better equipped models as much as the fact that Apple is pushing a bad configuration so hard. At least give people choice and don’t have them wait for an online order, which took two weeks in my case.

    • +1

      Are you a heavy user?

I’ll leave 8 Safari tabs open while Dragonflight is running and it still runs like butter.

Not saying you didn’t need 16. But far too many people think Windows and Macos are the same.

      • +2

Don't worry, the "PC experts" will be here in a second to tell you your real life experience is incorrect because 8GB of ram cannot be enough.

I am not saying that nobody needs +8GB, just that the people that need 16GB of ram know that they need it, if you don't know if you need 8GB or 16GB of ram, you very likely don't need it for what you use a laptop for.

    • -2

The fools that spout the 'crippled' SSD Speed theory. If 8GB Ram and the SSD speed isn't enough for you then maybe you should be looking at the 14" Macbook pro.
You should be happy Apple even offers that more expensive useless configuration.

    • What I find so strange is that even outside of this promotion, you cannot even pick up a model with more than 8 GB in store

That's normal, non-Apple retail stores usually only sell the "stock" models of Apple computers. If you want more RAM, that's a custom order. Sometimes the 3rd party retailer can put in a custom order for you, but you may have to wait months for it to arrive.

I've seen some rare exceptions where Officeworks sometimes stocks the 16GB model of the M1 Mac mini (which is a custom configuration), but that's generally very rare and I haven't seen that being offered for Apple laptops.

This is why the M1 Pro MacBook Pros are nice, they all start off with a minimum of 16GB of RAM for all the stock configurations, so they are readily available at all 3rd party retailers whenever they go on sale.

  • cheaper waiting for the apple store black friday deal if you're ok with giftcard and potential cashback and trs if you're traveling

  • Got this model for this price from the Apple Edu site about 6 months ago. Hard to beat at this price point, amazing battery life is a bonus 👍

  • +2

I have 128GB on my PC but I can say 8GB M1 Mac Air is ok for my use case.
No issues running Wow + chrome + YouTube + telegram at the same time.

  • +1

Hopefully this is still available Friday and we can pricematch at Apple (though they'll only go down to $1350- max price match is 10%) and then get the $250 GC on top.

  • -8

This was the one that uses Celeron chips very slow

    • +3

M1 chip. No need to lie.

    • Are you thinking about the original Macbook from seven years ago that used a slow Intel Core M chip?

  • Can this MacBook Air drive 2 external monitors + it’s own screen? Want to switch to max but my current set up with a surface pro has 2 monitors…

    • +1

Yep just need to use displaylink

      • +1

I'd avoid displaylink and get a 14" if two monitors is a requirement.

      • Have you used it with 2 external displays, the tech specs only have 1 external display up to 6k 60hz

E: Just read your comment properly (in my head it was displayport).

    • Tech specs:

      Display Support
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display in millions of colours and:

One external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz
      Thunderbolt 3 digital video output

      Native DisplayPort output over USB-C
VGA, HDMI, DVI and Thunderbolt 2 output supported using adapters (sold separately)

    • +1

Displaylink works very effectively with the M1 chip. Drove a 4k and QHD screen quite well.. Some relatively minor cost in CPU, but nothing in comparison to when I used it on my 8th gen Intel…

  • Daughter has one for UNI last 2 years no issues.
Selling my M2 base model today for $1400 bought it for $1100 new, that's how good I think they are personally.

    • Why are you selling the M2?

    • +1

how did you buy the M2 at 1110 new?

      • Facebook market place

      • +2

lady bought it from amazon but was too small storage for her, she bought another 1TB one, offered $1100 she took it

        • Incredible….

  • There have been some reports of spontaneous cracking screens on the m1 air. Do you guys think this is a real concern (e.g. manufacturing/ design flaw)? I’m interested in the m1 air (preferably 512gb SSD) but don’t want to roll the dice if this is a real problem…

    • We have about 200 of them in use and none of them have come back with broken screens other than ones that the staff have admitted they dropped or sat on.

My one that I have had for over a year also hasn't had any issues.

      • Thanks for the feedback… sounds like they are robust machines… would you recommend them from a durability perspective (within reason of course)… e.g., reasonably durable compared to other work laptops… or stay away, because of excessive return rate from accidental damage?
