"OzBargainers In The Wild!"

Take a photo of yourself or an OzBargainer in the wild.

This OzBargainer can be pricematching something in Officeworks, ordering a McFlurry, standing next to a famous landmark or whatever else you want.

Each user will receive points for their photos.

Rules:

  • A photo must be an OzBargainer in the wild. OzBargainer can be identified with either an OzBargain T-shirt (if you have one), or the print-out page (covering the head for example).
  • Each user is allowed to submit multiple entries, and the final score will be the sum of top 3 entries from that user.
  • Score for each photo will be judged by creativity, originality, photo quality, as well as bonus points from a list.
  • Definitely no photo-shopping.
  • Photos only. No video or drawings.
  • Contest ends June 30.

Points:

  • Total score = sum of scores of top 3 entries of each user.
  • Entry score = Base points (0-10) + Bonus points
  • Base points are determined by the originality, creativity, photo quality, etc.

Bonus Points:

  • Bonus points are scored when you include one or more of these features in your photo.
  • Each bonus point (denoted by a letter) can be claimed only once per entry. (e.g. Max score from popular product, denoted by A is +5)
  • Each entry is permitted to claim a bonus point for each letter.
  • When any +5 point item has been claimed, no one else will be able to claim the bonus using that item. E.G. If someone claims an Eneloop for their entry, no one else will be able to use an Eneloop for their entry.
  • The famous person needs to be them in real life. No cut outs, posters, impersonators, or people with the same name.

+5

  • A) next to famous landmark (e.g. has a wikipedia entry)
  • B) eating in fast food restaurant (e.g. KFC, Hungry Jack's, McDonald's)
  • C) with hacked deals (e.g. hacked McFlurry )
  • D) holding popular products in the public (e.g. Nokia 3310, Eneloop, Woodworm umbrella, flashlights, etc)
  • E) inside the cabin of a budget airline flight

+10

  • F) media appearance (broadcast TV (e.g. FTA, Foxtel) or in newspaper with a circulation over 1,000)
  • G) with famous people (federal politicians, TV personalities, professional sport stars, etc.)

+15

  • H) with Gerry Harvey
  • I) with Joe Hockey

New Bonus Points (24/6):

  • J) +5 points with a uniformed employee/rep from a store with a deal posted on OzBargain (e.g. Officeworks employee)
  • K)+10 points While skydiving, hang gliding or scuba diving.
  • L)+10 getting together an OzBargain mob. 10 people with an OzBargain sign or t-shirt each.
  • M)+15 point with a Socceroo who played in a World Cup.

When I refer to 10 people, I mean 10 alive human beings (e.g. no mannikins or goats). A Socceroo meaning an adult male professional soccer player who has played for Australia in a FIFA world cup. Same rules as before in terms entry details.

These bonus points applicable to all entries made after 24/6 11:19PM EST.

How to Enter:

Upload your photo to OzBargain (go to My Account - Files - Upload new file) or an image hosting site such as Dropbox, imgur, Facebook etc. Link the picture in a comment below.

  • Where do submissions go?

    • +1

You can upload to OzBargain, and then post it in the comments. To upload to OzBargain, click on "My Accounts", and under "view" there's "file". You can then upload image files or PDF files there.

    • +1

      Ah good point.

Entries should just be put as a comment here.

You can upload photos to OzBargain by going to My Account-Files-Upload Files. Paste the URL here. Alternatively, you can use imgur, Facebook, Dropbox or any other photo upload site that is available to be viewed publicly.

  • +11

scotty, neil, hamza, moocher etc… how about a sample submission from you guys so we know what we need to aspire to?

  • Sounds fun! I have some thinking to do!

  • Everyone too shy?

    • +2

People can enter and still stay anonymous. Just cover your face with the printout

  • +5

I ALWAYS see ozbargainers at work… ING Paywave gives it away…

  • Can we take the pic without a print out and then digitally add the face print out?
I don't think it contradicts the no photoshopping guidelines as that would be e.g. Adding a mcflurry in your hands

    • I don't think we can prove the authenticity that it's indeed an OzBargain in the photo.

      • +1

If I hold a OzB logo or something along with my bonuses would if suffice?

        • +1

We don't want any digital manipulation in the photo. You can hold the logo or printout whereever and just turn your face away from the camera, wear a mask, etc.

        • Thanks

        • This really kills spontaneous photography. So now I have to walk around with an A4 piece of paper brandishing the OZB logo in my pocket or the official t-shirt(which I don't own)?
e.g. I took a hilarious photo of myself in the Reject Shop rummaging through the bargain bin section at the back of the store like a cockroach. However, because I didn't magically have a poster in my pocket my submission is not acceptable.

Can't we just put the OzB logo(digitally affixed) over our faces or on part of the image?

        • +1

          No digital manipulation.

You can print the sign or something smaller as long as OzBargain or the logo is visible so we can identify you as an Ozbargainer. The contest is supposed to have some degree of difficulty and is intended for people to go out and take a photo specifically for this contest.

        • OK, Understood. Thanks for the clarification :)

  • cool, I shall see what I come up with.

  • +5

Do I get +20 if I take a pic with the DSE Online Sales Tech that always forgets to exclude certain items?

    • That implies they exist.

    • Not being ignorant or anything, but I read it as only one bonus point per category e.g only +5 for the popular items instead of +20?

      • Yeah it is, but dunno, thought i may be able to score more bonus points. Understand I'll probably only get 5! :)

        • Nice entry.

Sorry if that was confusing. I'm trying to think of the best way to explain it.

The bonus points for an item is claimable once per entry.
The bonus points for a landmark is claimable once per entry.
          etc. etc.

If person A has an Eneloop in the picture, then no one else can use Eneloops for their bonus points for a popular product. If person A, takes a picture next to the Sydney Opera House then no one else can use Sydney Opera House. etc.etc.

      You win!

  • is video allowed ?

    • Photos only please.

  • Does the photo need to be taken after the competition announcement, or can photos taken prior to the announcement be used?

    • Our preference would be to take a photo for this competition. Recycled photos probably won't be scored as well as new photos.

  • +1

I think this is probably the coolest comp so far. I just think it's a shame the coverage for it is low (need flashing lights on the front page guys!) and the deadline is so soon. I'm sure if a few more weeks were available, jv could get a selfie with Joe and Gerry on a plane, with a Maccas in the background, surrounded in a bunch of Meritline crap. Joe would be using his most recent gift and Gerry would be raging over online sales.

  • +1

    Someone just asked:

Just confirming that we can take 3 photos and all 3 will add up to the total points at the end of the comp for us? Does taking a picture next to a large cardboard cut out of Jerry or Smokin' Joe (Or even a mask of these clowns count towards the bonus 15 points? :)

You can enter as many times as you want. The top 3 rated photos will count towards your high score.

No cutouts, no masks. Needs to be the real person as in Joe Hockey, the current treasurer of Australia. Same thing with Gerry Harvey as in the guy who founded Harvey Norman.

    • Well I'll be damned if I saw someone with Joe Hockey.

  • This is LOL!

  • +1

So am I reading this right?

Say you take an awesome photo that gets 10/10 base points, but no bonus points.
Then someone takes a rubbish photo (and I mean absolutely rubbish, poor quality and framing, etc, etc) with a product at the nearest landmark.
They automatically get 10 bonus points and you cant beat them, even though yours might be hilarious/unique/detailed, and theirs is rubbish.
I know its incentive to use the bonuses, but this makes them feel like necessities, not bonuses.

I also dont like how you gotta make 3 entries to increase your total score.
I dont think someone with 1 tremendous photo should lose to someone with 3 average photos.
ie, 1 great photo with 10/10 base points and +10 bonus points (20 points total), will lose to 3 rubbish photos of 1/10 base points each and a +5, +10 and +5 bonus points (23 points total)

    Well thats my 2c.
Now I gotta go think of a good idea for my photo….. then 2 more good ideas

    • I agree. only one entry per person should be chosen.

    • +2

Good feedback. It's not a "photography" contest per se. While I can't speak for other judges, I couldn't really care about lighting, aperture, colour saturation etc. The important thing is the subject matter in the photo.

This contest is intentionally made to be difficult. Perhaps the bonus points shouldn't be called bonus points but just points?

You need to take as many photos as you think will put you in a winning position. At this point in time, any submission will put you in either 1st or 2nd place. If you have taken 3 photos and someone is beating you in points, you may need to put more entries in to top that person.

      • +1

If you look at treeman's entry as an example, if he separated the items he is holding into 3 separate photos, he would have got more total points.

That doesn't seam fair given he put in the effort to show him holding/wearing as many ozbargain items as possible in the same photo.

        • In this case he may get more base points by using more than one even though he doesnt get as many bonus points

      • Thanks for the reply.
Points / Bonus Points, I dont think it matters what they're called, I guess I'm just being picky.

I get your point about it not being a 'photography' competition, more of a snapshot/selfie type comp.

I still think though that the comp rules almost force (not encourage) people to take as many pics as they can.

I mean even if the rules were that your best scoring pic is your only entry, it would still encourage people to make multiple entries.

Needing 3 entries moreso encourages people to just make another 2 quick/easy entries in order to get a good position.

        • I agree. It should be an averaging of all the submission scores(up to a max of 3), not additional scoring.

    • Yup, I would've participated if it was one photo per person. Would've done a stylish scuba diving shot. However, knowing I can't come up with 3 awesome ideas and not wanting to have crappy meh ones up, I'll pass.

Here is my first entry(thank god for front facing cameras) :P

Proudly wearing my $20 bomber jacket from the recent Hard Yakka online sale, therefore I save a ton on heating costs in winter.
Eating a Mars Bar Mini(packaging and all) for lunch, bought a packet of 12 for $2 @ BigW which is a cheap source of fuel and full of essential vitamins and minerals.
I'm obviously "in the wild", or (perhaps in a sterile office environment, kind of "wild") due to the explicit display of taxidermy on the wall.

A rare OZBargainer has been photographed in the wild protecting his latest catch from anyone who dare try and take it away. The EM7000 is usually an elusive and hard to capture prey but not for this sly OZBer.

  • +2

I'd also like to ask, what constitutes "in the public", and what proof of it do you need?
No offense to the 3 entries so far, but there is nothing really that proves they are in a public place, and not their garden, or a private house/building.

Because technically, if they are not in a public place, then points for "popular products in the public" do not apply, and those products should still be available for others to use in public to score the bonus points.

    • Very true, I suppose the only option is to take the word. What else can you do? Too late now though, stop complaining and start entering I suppose!

      • +1

Ive got my idea already, just need better weather to take the photo.
However, I don't want to have to re-do anything because the rules are a bit unclear.

Ie, I'm sure you'd be annoyed if they told you that some of your bonus points dont count because of [insert unclear rule here].

I'm not trying to be a big jerk about it, but I think the comp is a bit confusing (for some (me)).

        • -3

I'd also be pretty pissed if they cancelled the competition and started again though.

To be honest I think Ozbargain mods may be better off giving us 3 that entered a $20 gift card and starting it again with the rules a bit clearer.

        • +1

I dont think they need to restart the comp,
Im pretty sure the mods are nice enough guys to honour all entries before any clarifications they may make.
And Im sure they are thankful to the first few who got the ball rolling.

        • +1

We won't cancel the comp, so don't worry.

what constitutes "in the public", and what proof of it do you need?

We won't disqualify entries however when judging we won't look favorably on shots that are say in your backyard vs. next to the Opera House. The more public the better. It gets too overcomplicated if we'd have to define what a public area is.

Ask us a question. It shouldn't be that confusing now (hopefully). We aren't [Insert Retailer here] trying to reneg on a pricematch/rebate. :)

        • Ok, I think Ive got it now.

          Example:
Entrant 1: Cree flashlight in the backyard
Entrant 2: Cree flashlight at the opera house

-Both get +5 for popular item in a public place (even though the backyard is not really public)
-Entrant 2 gets another +5 for famous landmark
-Both get some base points, but as the backyard is not as good it will be looked upon less favorably when awarding the base points.

          Is this right?

        • Each product can only be used once. So entrant 2 wouldn't get a bonus point for a popular product.

+5 bonus for entrant 1 (popular product)

+5 bonus for entrant 2 (famous landmark)

So Cree flashlight & Opera House are now crossed off the list so noone else can use those items.

Without seeing this hypothetical picture, it's hard to say how the moderators will judge. We all judge differently but if the pictures were literally the same, then yet Opera House would likely be judged higher.

        • This is how I see it.

Entrant 1 - Apple iMac standing outside KFC: base (0 to 10) + 5 (as only one bonus from the +5 section is allowed per photo) = xx.
This person will only get 1 lot of bonus 5 points since the rules state that you can only have 1 lot of bonus points in the picture. But the person is using Eneloops and KFC so they have crossed off 2 items yet only gotten the bonus for 1. Interesting….

          Entrant 2 - Standing in a photo published in a newspaper: (0 to 10) + 10 (for newspaper)

As for my entry, my neighbours were looking at me strange, not quite a backyard yet not quite a super public area :P

        • Almost….

You can get +5 for a popular product, another +5 points for a famous landmark, another +5 points for hacked deal, +10 points for a media appearance, etc.

As long as no one has used anyone of the specific products, landmarks, hacked deals then you can collect 75 bonus points max. Albeit if you collect all of them in one picture then its potentially going to be an epic photo.

EDIT: Well maybe 70, I can't see how you can take a picture inside an airline cabin at the same time as you are eating in a fast food restaurant next to a famous landmark. You would also have to get Gerry Harvey and Joe Hockey in an airplane (good luck with that!).

OK, I have to find an easier way of declaring this.

        • OK, I've put letters in for clarity:

          Bonus Points:

          • Bonus points are scored when you include one or more of these features in your photo.
          • Each bonus point (denoted by a letter) can be claimed only once per entry. (e.g. Max score from popular product, denoted by A is +5)
          • Each entry is permitted to claim a bonus point for each letter. (e.g. +5 for popular product, +5 for a landmark)

          • E inside the cabin of a budget airline flight

          Hope that's clearer.

Here's a picture of me just coming pack from my Click and Collect Online Woolworths Order for '$20 off $50 spend' (+5 popular product) with a tastey hacked Mcflurry (+5 Hacked Deal) At Mcdonalds (+5 Eating At Mcdonalds)! In true Ozbargain style I didnt really want the Mcflurry but I bought it for the potential 'bargainness' of winning this competition! I actually decided I didn't want it at all (how may of us ozbargainers have done this!) and gave it to a stoned guy outside (I thought about selling it at profit on ebay, but it just would've melted!)

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/4xoam6sb0r24va9/DSCN1376.JPG

    • I just realised that the "$20 off $50 spend" bags may not be accepted as a "product" as it may be interpreted more as a 'popular deal'. However, if you look into the definition of 'product' on http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/product you will find: "2) a thing or person that is the result of an action or process".

The bags full of groceries are a "thing" that are a result of a process (buying them online on my android using the coupons!). Therefore, all bags full of groceries from the online sale can be seen as the 'product' and the people voting over 1000+'s for the deal are actually voting for the product as well as the deal i.e. the product being the bag of groceries (the thing) that has been obtained via buying online on android using the coupons!

As Ozbargains fine print doesn't specify what they mean by product, I believe you are required to honour my point and if you don't I will contact the ACCC and sue (this paragraph a joke - just getting into more 'wild ozbargain spirit' of threatening to sue and clarifying the nitty gritty of terms!).

If that point doesn't hold up, you can see a bag of Doritos in the shopping bag, which is a popular product on its own! (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/72929).

Here's my second one. After my Mcflurry I thought I should get some protein so bought and took my hacked (+5 hacked) Double Cheeseburger (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/142665) to Seaworld UnderWater World Mooloolaba (+5 Famous Place http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UnderWater_World_Sea_Life_Aquar…) with my three Woodworm umbrellas (+5 popular product). Only about half a minute after packing up the umbrellas from this picture the coppers came into the carpark and started circling, obviously wondering what I was doing. Thankfully I got away in time and didn't have to explain why I was standing around with three umbrellas when its not raining eating a grimy hamburger with a strange poster stuck to my head….

      • Haha +points for the getaway

        • It was a but suss doing it at night but I didnt want to risk waiting till tomorrow just incase someone else posted the Woodworms first! The Mcdonalds one was embarrasing. There were drunk teens everywhere..

        • you definitely have the first mover advantage on a number of those items.

      You're good!

For my third entry (waiting till the new bonuses are released before I post more) I was so hoping to be wearing my Solo Lucky Undies (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/26085) but alas I can't find them anywhere…

    • if they are indeed going to release new bonuses, that seems really unfair to those who've entered already.

  • How many points if we can get a picture with JV?

    • +6

For that you'll probably get negged ;)

    Here is my 2nd entry.
(Man, taking selfies is hard work!)
I'm outdoors watching an episode of Seinfeld from the boxed set DVD collection that I purchased from JB-HiFi for $71.20 on my 7" portable Phillips DVD player that was recently acquired from DSE online for $35 shipped. Fueling this episodic marathon is a large 485ml can of "No Fear" energy drink which costs me $0.29c a can(or 24 cans for $7 @ Flemington markets).

In true Ozbargain style, I have taken advantage, manipulated, and exploited the rules for my entry.

The Ozbargainer in the pic is the family lawnmower (Hey, the rules dont say it has to be yourself, or even a human for that matter).
She's sporting the official OzB t-shirt, although its a bit tight, due to her being pregnant!
    Photo

For popular product (D), she has the Adidas perfume, from all those GraysOutlet $10 coupon codes with no minimum spend, and everyone got the perfumes because they had free shipping. You can see the road in the background, technically the roadside is a public place, so this should count.

For hack (C) (you'll have to trust me on this one), she has literally just eaten the hacked maccas Vegetarian Burger . No joke, I intended to eat that burger, but when setting up the shot, it "disappeared". Since mcflurry and double cheeseburger are already claimed, I had to resort to the less popular hacks, which was so embarrassing to order. I considered saying to the girl, "I'm not weird or anything, its actually for a goat", but I dont think that would have helped.

For famous landmark (A), she cunningly made a fake wikipedia page for the Tree in the background (although when you read this it will probably be deleted already). I know, thats just plain dodgy, but it shouldnt hurt anyone, and it will be deleted soon (either by wikipedia, or me when the comp ends). But hey, Im sure we've all bent the rules on one bargain or another.

So I hope you enjoy it, and if none of my bonuses count, I think I should at least get 1 point for getting a goat to wear a t-shirt :P

Nice work, and I think you are the first person to go for a +20 too!

    • Any proof its a hacked McChicken? I only doubt because it's in a regular burger box where normally if you order a Bread Roll with condiments it comes wrapped up in one of their 'special' burger wrapping paper, not in a box at all. If it is legit, props to you! A great combo!

      • Yep, it's a hacked one. I did ask for it to be put in a mcchicken box so I had physical proof to take a photo of.

Entry 4 with my hacked Ozzy battler burger, Havaianas thing, eating at Subway at the famous landmark Sunshine Plaza! More details to come when I get home!

    • +3

Here's the story for entry four:

I went to Hungry Jacks (+5) next to the famous landmark Sunshine Plaza (+5) to eat my hacked Ozzy Battler Burger (+5), and took this photo whilst browsing on my popular (+5) Google Nexus Phone things to buy 15% off on ebay during the sale today!

http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/18801/23494/dscn1402.jp… (mods please use this as entry five - Hungry Jacks location and Google Nexus Phone still are bonuses even though I used the other two already!)

However, I thought that the Sunshine Plaza bonus might not count considering I was not technically in the Plaza (in hindsight I was wrong as the rules say you need to be next to a landmark) so I decided to go in and sat down at Subway to take a photo.

I had to use my Nexus phone to take a widescreen photo as I couldn't get both the Sunshine Plaza sign and the Subway shop proof into the same picture on my regular camera. However, that meant I didn't have a popular product and I was stumped until I realised on my feet were my Havianas Thongs that I bought in a sale found on Ozbargain! I put in the picture my Nikon Waterproof camera which I actually found using Ozbargain forum advice (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/62641) and my thumb means I am technically in the picture!

So in summary entry four is me at Sunshine Plaza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunshine_Plaza) (+5 popular location) Subway (+5 Fast Food) eating a Hacked Hungry Jacks burger (+5 Hacked) with a Havianas thong (+5 Popular Product) and a camera I also bought using Ozbargain forum advice!

Don't see how your 3 entries can be beaten unless someone pulls something out of the hat!

Just trying to get all the moderator scores. I'll put some in progress scores now, shouldn't change too much.

Traveling right now and here's my entry for budget airline. Mid-air shoot. Jetstar in this case.

My family got the flight for cheap because they cancelled/delayed the flight during our previous trip to Queensland (due to engineering problem) and they ended up giving us $50 credit each, which we used to book cheap flight to Melbourne.

Interestingly our flight also got cancelled this morning due to "bad weather" — Jetstar claimed not their fault so no credit this time.

  • OK, I've updated the scores. We are awaiting votes from one moderator. I don't expect it to change the scores significantly.
