What is a flatlay?

A: Flatlay is basically laying various items on a table, floor, whatever and taking a picture of it.

Take a photo of what's in your carry-on bag. E.G. your travel tech, travel essentials, OzBargain acquired stuff etc.

Below is mine from last year:

travel

  • Take a pic of the items you would put in your carry-on/checked bag.

    • Doesn't have to be everything (e.g. socks, jocks).
    • Could be stuff that you have acquired on OzBargain (travel sims, power banks, etc.)
    • Please do not include banned items.
    • A written sign that says OzBargain, a printout of an OzBargain logo or text saying OzBargain (write it on a piece of paper).

  • You can feel free to adjust brightness, contrast, colours etc however please don't Photoshop (digitally add) in objects (this includes the OzBargain text/logo).

  • Submit as many entries as you like.
  • Please either upload your photo to OzBargain (My Account - files) or an external service (e.g. imgur) and post in a comment on this page.
  • Alternatively, feel free to upload it to Instagram with the tag #ozbargain. You'll need to comment on this page so we know which one is yours.

  • Moderators will judge all entries and select the 3 best entries.

  • Photos only. No drawings.
  • Each user/person can only win 1 prize (e.g. 1st, 2nd or 3rd).

Lots of example flatlays on Instagram

  • Why the sandwich bag?

    • +1

Holds the US coins. Bad enough having AU coins so definitely don't want to mix with pennies.

      • u bought passport through ozbargain ad? what's the deal? 90% off RRP?

  • +10

    Here is My entry

I figure i can trade them for goods and services if i need to

    • Can of Pringles? That will be 4 Eneloops please.

      • +3

Maybe at a servo. Usual price is 1 Eneloop

    • Too hard to compete now… I don't even own a single eneloop.

    • I am so envious. I've been waiting months for a deal to buy some eneloop batteries.

    • the main currency of ozbargainville

  • Just a reminder, you must include in your photo:

A written sign that says OzBargain, a printout of an OzBargain logo or text saying OzBargain (write it on a piece of paper).

  • yeah I use ziplock bags for a bunch of things when I travel, one for usb cables, another spare batteries, 2-3 for currency and coins, one with camera lenses (with a crystal pack for moisture prevention).
Great way of separating things out and still seeing what is inside.
Interesting competition but I can't ar$ed digging out my travel pack

    My Entry

Put a case where my iPhone 6s would've went, unfortunately I was using it to take the photo ;( (Actual camera broke, on the outlook for a good bargain, too bad I missed those DSE ones..or else it'd be in the pic too)

    Good luck everyone!

  • I would also pack a small satchel of wet ones, after traveling with kids I found them useful for wiping down all sorts of things or cleaning spills on your clothes on the plane. Small, light, convenient.
Also I wont do a long haul without the Bose 20's. They are huge in the luggage but they pay for themselves in quality of life.
I too travel with a laptop and a tablet, but I leave the laptop in Rome with my in laws and take the tablet on the shorter week long jaunts.

    Notable Ozbargain items:
Hard drives and SD cards all from OzBargain deals.
    Samsung galaxy note 2.
    Kindle.
    GoPro.
    TSA approved bag lock.
    Busniess cards from Moo.

Items won through photography comps which have been posted on OzBargain:
    Lowepro camera bag
    Joby gorilapod and ball head
$2000 Hello world travel voucher :)

    Other items:
Bota bag for water. (seriously the best water bottle ever invented and a conversation starter)
    AU and UK passport :)
More than 10 sim cards from different countries.
Bandana (used on planes to cover my eyes instead of those dumb eyemasks)

    • great entry

    • Do you drink wine from that bota bag?

      • I have been known to, yes :P This is actually the third one I've bought. My first one from Spain I left on a bus in Ecuador, then I bought a new one in Ecuador which sprung a leak, then got this one at a camping store in Canada. I use it for water mainly, but it has also helped me sneak beer, wine, and sprits into all sorts of places too, it wraps to your body, so its easily concealed under your clothes :)

      • Also in Grenada a police officer stopped me and asked for a drink of Vino, when he saw it, then looked at me in disgust when I said it only had Agua in it. haha

  • +3

Here is my entry. As you can see, I travel quite light (and bright).

Not to be obtuse, because it is interesting to see what people carry, but is the prize giving to reward creativity or humour or biggest pile or what?

    • +1

I don't know about you but I think we might be carrying the same stuff

    • +3

Don't know about you guys, but I'm looking at these posts and thinking maybe it's a competition for most expensive collection of stuff. It's cool and all, but if you don't have thousands of dollars worth of gadgets how can you compete? Nobody wants to see my jumper and makeup bag.

      • points awarded for creativity too you know.

I would like to see some bizzaro / weird / funky collection of items that tells me about the personality of a person.

You can only see so many gadgets and cameras and powerbanks before it all starts to get stale.

  • I cant participate as I am working away from home and dont have those travelling stuff with me :(
And Neil's photo didnt have an OzBargain logo…or did I miss it?

    • +2

And Neil's photo didnt have an OzBargain logo…or did I miss it?

Correct. So I can't win this comp!

I'm surprised they allow you to take batteries not in a device!

You're also getting somewhat close to the 100Wh maximum allowance in batteries/powerbanks there :p

      • when I travelled to the Hamilton islands, they got us to remove the loose AA batteries from our checked in luggage and move them into our carry-on luggage

  • I left it late but here is what I carry on.

Some things such as the document holder ($5), rain jacket ($1), powercube ($14), and the jap adaptor ($2) were bought during the recent Dick smith sale so it has not left Australia yet. :P
