      • When did this card stop working for ATO?

        • +5

I just paid ato by this card. Everything was fine. Only 0.2 service fee for each payment.

    • +1

      Yes.

    • Yes, they can be used to pay the ATO.

      • Just tried and got this:
        Transaction declined
Contact your card issuer. We were unable to process your payment.

        • On your first attempt? I only got that after 4 transactions - it seems they put a limit on them.
Are you taking the processing fee into account? For example, you can pay $249.50 max from a $250 card because there is a 0.2% fee.

          • @puffinfresh: Yes first attempt and yes only paying $249.50 :(

Might have to try again later…

  • Can I use this card at post office? My bill havent fully paid yet by the zip deal

    • Yes I'd like to know this as well! If you can pay bills with them I'm gonna be all over it.

        • +1

All sorts of places don't accept prepaid cards for some reason or rather so it's definitely not a guarantee that's why I asked.I can pay my rent through Australia Post also but they usually only accept debit cards not credit cards for some reason, if I can pay my rent using these I'll be wrapped because I haven't found any hacks to discount that as yet lol
OzBargainers should never pay full price even for rent.

          • @Clarky77: it is not about the rent it is the fee and why should your landlord need to absorb the credit card fee for you to pay your rent.

            • @samehada: Because the fee is fk all (say $10 per $500?) and they won't hesitate to raise the rent on you by much more than $10 every 6 months. Then when average rent costs drop they certainly won't offer you a decreased rent. It's a bit of fair-is-fair as I see it.

            • @samehada: Are you a little landlord?

    • No, I tried after purchase it straight away.

  • +8

Nice time coles. When will you process the refund?

  • +2

I have 9 $250 cards and none were compromised.

    • +13

      …yet

      • -4

Just use it straightaway to buy another gift card if you are worried. For instance, Wollies ;)

      5314951040000002
      5314951040000003

let's see who hit the jackpot first

      • +2

Can't be for the $250, they start with
        5314 9510 5

        The $100s start with
        5314 9510 4

6 digits and then the 1 check digit.

It is a worry that would be easily solved if they enforced ALL retailers of any kind to require the CVV when the transaction is not done with the physical card in hand.

Not a chance Coles, fix your problem first please!

Has anyone received their refund from Coles?

    • +7

maybe why we have new sales, they need new fund to refund you 😂

      • Pyramid scheme

      • +1

This is legit something that happens (with smaller companies that need cash flow and are about to go bankrupt)

        • +1

airlines are the example, they didn't refund my cancelled ticket during COVID-19 for 9 months.

  • +5

We should pass this on to channel 9 ACA.
So dodgy of Coles to promote these when they know they are hacked

  • +27

I generally don’t like downvoting comments or deals on OzBargain, but I feel obliged to downvote this deal due to two known issues with this product (which is in line with the voting guidelines).

    1. Tampering

    • A fraudster will take an unactivated card from the shelf, carefully open the cardboard packaging to replace the unactivated card with a used card, seal the cardboard packaging and put it back on the gift card shelf.
    • The packaging can sometimes be opened without making any noticeable cuts, tears or bends on the packaging itself. From my experience, certain expiry dates are more susceptible than others.
    • The last 11 digits of the barcode on back of the packaging must match the Card ID printed on the back of the Coles Gift Mastercard. If they do not match, please immediately alert the Customer Support Centre on 1300 095 072.

    2. Recent BIN Attacks

    • A fraudster will use software to automatically generate Coles Gift Mastercard card numbers and test these combinations to see which card numbers are valid and if the cards are active.
    • Although any card that can be used for online purchases is susceptible to BIN attacks, Coles Gift Mastercards are particularly susceptible (as I have discussed here), due to a limited number of expiry dates in use, a comparatively small number (3,000,000) of known card number combinations, as well as some merchants not requiring the CVV for purchases.
    • It is not easy to defend yourself against this kind of attack, as Coles Gift Mastercards purchased at Coles are activated immediately after purchase, plus you can only block or unblock a Coles Gift Mastercard by calling their phone number during operating hours. I spoke to Coles Gift Mastercard a few days ago, and they stated that this feature is not available on the public-facing website, as that is actually only available on a separate internal system. Although the rep stated that it could be coming to the public-facing website sometime in the future, I am not going to hold my breath.

If you are going to purchase these prepaid gift cards, please retain copies of your proof of purchase (i.e. the receipt printed at the checkout). A copy of the proof of purchase is required if you fall victim to either of these issues and ask the Coles Gift Mastercard team for assistance.

why Google didn't fix their damn problem, how did they allow transaction without 3D-secure i.e CVV code.

Mastercard/Visa should get their shit system right, all online payment system MUST have 3D-Secure enabled, same as enforcing PIN instead of the stupid signature.

      • +5

I’m admittedly probably throwing too much crap at Coles Gift Mastercards. You’re right in saying that it’s really a perfect storm of factors:

        • Coles Gift Mastercards being automatically activated after purchase.
        • Coles Gift Mastercards making it difficult to block or unblock a Coles Gift Mastercard.
        • Coles Gift Mastercards having a small number of expiry dates.
        • Coles Gift Mastercards having a relatively small number of known card combinations.
        • Some merchants not asking for CVVs.
        • Some merchants not properly protecting themselves against BIN attacks, making it easy for fraudsters to test which Coles Gift Mastercards have funds.

why Google didn't fix their damn problem, how did they allow transaction without 3D-secure i.e CVV code.

Funny you mention that. Within the last few days, a payment processor has actually stopped accepting all cards without 3D Secure (which includes the Coles Gift Mastercard and other prepaid gift cards). However, Google isn’t on that list…

        • Coles MC giftcard do have CVV. It has nothing to do with 3DSecure, some payment gateway just don't want to accept prepaid card.

The hacking problem is with Mastercard/Visa, online payment is always classed as high risk same as MOTO which is "card not presents" transactions. They should enforced 3DSecure for these transactions.

Which prepaid cards have lock/unlock feature, even your bank debit cards doesn't have it with many big banks.

          • +1

            @samehada:

Coles MC giftcard do have CVV. It has nothing to do with 3DSecure, some payment gateway just don't want to accept prepaid card.

I never said “Coles Gift Mastercards don’t have CVVs”, because they obviously do. I’m saying that some merchants don’t ask for the Coles Gift Mastercard’s CVV when processing an online or over-the-phone payment, which I think is dodgy.

Which prepaid cards have lock/unlock feature, even your bank debit cards doesn't have it with many big banks.

I believe the Australia Post Gift Card implemented a lock/unlock feature on their web portal after they were continually embarrassed by A Current Affair.

            • +1

@WookieMonster: that crap AusPost GC system block WW payment. All you need to do is placing an order for WW discount gc and their stupid system just block the card.

They classified this as high risk and do not allow and there is no way to bypass it. Their system is one of the worst one.

Only1Visa is another crap one, it doesn't have PIN and you can't pay at many self checkout terminal because they don't have the signature option anymore.

For packaging, Vanilla GC hs the most secure packaging. I don't understand why Coles don't learn from this.

            • -1

@WookieMonster: Where do I lock/unlock Auspost gift cards? I only see transaction history when I log in.

              • @magster: I can't see block feature either.

            • @WookieMonster: I confirm it has not although their staff n a few forumers claim consumers can block the card through web portal. I can't see the settings to do that. Anyone?

        • Is this why I cant use the gift cards to buy woolworths gift cards online anymore?

          • @ATangk: That would be the most likely explanation.

I know that the Woolworths Group gift card portal did 3D Secure checks for when I have used a Mastercard or Amex that support 3D Secure in the past, so Woolworths Group have probably started requiring it recently to reduce their exposure to fraudulent transactions.

          • @ATangk: it is Auspost system that block WW giftcard purchase and since WW use the same system for online order I think it is also blocked.

Unless they changed it, Auspos system not only decline the transaction they also block the card if you made discount Wish gc purchase. You can use this trick to put a block on Auspost Prepaid Mastercard GC. You will have to call them to unblock.

            • @samehada: Is your comment only referring to Auspost gift cards? I'm talking about using a Coles Prepaid MC.

              • @ATangk: The last time I tried it worked, not sure if they changed it.

              • @ATangk: Coles cards are Ok for now to buy woolworths gc, but no one knows what Coles will do to “enhance” their security after this hack. Maybe even less places you can spend than Auspost ones soon.

                • @1000060: I tried again, didnt work?

                  • @ATangk: Already patched then. It was working last Friday.

                • @1000060: What Coles should do is block all transactions that doesn't pass through CVV number. That will stop this kind of brute force attack.

                  • @samehada: True, but they may apply other restrictions as well like Auspost. Which will be a disaster for online purchases.

                  • @samehada: Even transactions with CVV numbers are being blocked though, so its a bit annoying everywhere.

    • +5

I think you still missed another point. Probably keep the card for a few months even after you used up. many ppl just throw away the card after spent all and guess what order cancelled and the shop refunded back to your card. Now you can say goodbye to your money.

This is my real case, I have paid extra for my water bill then I got a call from Water company, I have told them to just keep it on my bill and do not refund it. A month later I login to my account and I don't see the credit anymore and to my shocking they have refunded back to my prepaid card which I have already thrown away. I was extremely pissed because it was $600.

      • +6

I would not call that an issue with the product, that’s an issue with the person using the product. I have a stack of used Coles Gift Mastercards sitting next to me for that exact reason… I guess I may be more diligent than the average Coles Gift Mastercard user.

        • you will never know what will happen, sometimes you received your order then used it and it has issues then you got your refund and now you no longer have the card.

          • +1

@samehada: Depends what you use them for. I'd never buy a physical product with them. Have plenty of bills to pay.

That experience with the water company is obnoxious to say the least. I've put plenty of utility bills into credit using cards from promos like this and never an issue.

          • +6

@samehada: I take a photo of the front and back of the card and file it away under used. If I get a refund on it I can use up the balance online, no physical card necessary. Some merchants, like Amazon giftcards lets you choose the specific amount.

I won't be buying any this round though, due to the hack.

            • +2

@aoiro: you can put in spreadsheet with card number, easier to search

        • +1

Yep. I have a box full. Probably 400 odd, and all with receipts.

  • I bought over 10 $100 cards from the ZIP sale… Guess its time to buy more!

    • +3

you should spend them asap or hacker will spend them

    • It wouldn't have been much of a saving considering there's a cost associated to each of the cards. Why not at least get the $250 card instead?

      • +1

Probably because they weren't able to find stock of $250 cards.

        • Yea there was no stock for those. $5.50 per card isn't bad and if you stack with Shopback GC it's pretty good. No hard with required.

  • -3

can we go to ATM and withdraw cash?

    • +1

      No

      • How will the $7 fee work?

Is it $7 per $250 gift card? or for the whole purchase?

        • Per card

        • The card is $257.

        • +4

The $7 gift card purchase fee is what you pay for Indue (the card issuer) to activate the gift card and “manage” the funds on there. (I say manage in quotation marks, as some OzBargainers will beg to differ…) You only pay this $7 gift card purchase once at the time of purchase.

The 10% off referenced in this deal is applied on the sum of both the $250 face value of the card and the $7 gift card purchase fee (i.e. the 10% off is applied to $257), so you’ll only pay $231.30 for a $250 Coles Gift Mastercard.

  • +6

Well, Coles known the issue, but still promoting this card…

    • +3

Hehe They want to clear em lol :)

    • +4

All promos were set months ago.

  • +1

thanks F I used all of them, 10K worth lol

  • To anyone having issues with the compromising gift card, have you tried topping it to your virtual credit cards? Does that work?

    • +4

I've tried to top up my Revolut account but it didn't work.

  • +2

2 of mine were hacked since the last deal, lost $200. Be warned, I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole

  • Time to work the magic.

  • Coles didn't refund?

    • +1

Not yet, they promised 5 days but after 8 days still nothing…

  • +9

I clear these out super fast by overpaying my rates. Council then refunds me via bank transfer.

    No processing fee for me.

    • +8

You had better start up a money laundering / washing biz .

Seriously you have a dumb council there but that is nothing new .

    • You sir have changed my life. I purchased 54k worth on the last promotion.

  • +2

A saving of $18 for the $250 card after taking account into the $7 fees plus high risks of getting hacked! Probably stay away from the hassles…

  • Can car insurance, car rego, 3rd party Greenslips be prepaid in advance with these?

    • -1

      no

      • Completely depends on who you are with.
Government you cant prepay but insurance companies 100%. A lot you do online as advanced payment.

Last time i did this deal i paid heaps of bills in advance - telstra - optus - medibank - suncorp

        • +1

It actually boils down to whether the payment processor for a merchant accepts a Mastercard with no 3D Secure.

Apparently Woolworths Insurance recently stopped accepting cards with no 3D Secure.

        • OP specifically asked about car related bills which you cannot pay in advance.

  • +4

Got mine hacked minutes after buying. Refund took a long time to get back.

    • Did they refund the face value or purchase price?

      • +2

Purchase price but I needed to push hard for that. Was a very stressful experience!

        • how long did it take for them to refund you?

  • +1

thanks but rather not give $$$ to hackers

  • +2

For a $100 MasterCard, the % off is only 5%.

For a $250 MasterCard, the % off is only 7.2%.

For that kind of discount, the risk isn’t worth it, unless you spend it ASAP.

    • +5

It's easier to work and an hour overtime, than even buying multiple cards.

I absolutely love saving, but as I got older I realised it's actually easier to just earn more money than try save scraps.

      • +3

It really depends on the amount and time spent to do it. Would you rather save $100 and spend 1 hour to do it, or earn $100 by working 1 hour? Remember that the $100 earned by working will be taxed at a minimum 19%, and maximum 45%.

        • +1

minimum 0% if assessable income within tax free threshold…..

      • +2

Or you could do both…earn more money and save scraps $$$
