Original Post

Everyone loves parties. We did a few of them back in 2017 and then more last year. For 2019, OzBargain is turning thirteen in November, and we shall get the birthday parties / meetups organised again this year!

Here is the call from the Big Man Tyrone himself!

OzBargain13 from BMT

So, if event management is your speciality and you want to be an OzBargain birthday party organiser, here are some details:

  • Organise a birthday party for OzBargain in your city, on any day in November 2019.
  • Post a thread in Site Discussions to get started, titled it "[OzBargain 13th Birthday] <City> Meetup".
  • Get 15+ people and OzBargain will sponsor $500 towards venue or catering. More if you can gather a larger crowd of OzBargainers.

Some past examples — Ramen, Pizza, Picnic in the park, Table top games, Retro video games, Beer pong, etc. Hopefully that should give anyone who is interested an idea on how to get started. It's a great opportunity to meet other OzBargainers in real life and discuss your favourite OzBargain related topics (or conspiracies). You might even be able to score some OzBargain T-shirts!

I know it's still a month away but it never hurts to get the planning started early. I'll keep this post updated when more events are coming to shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there a meetup for <city>?

A: Check the table above. If there's none, feel free to start one! Post a thread at the Site Discussions forum with a poll. Provide a date, time and venue — and see whether anyone is interested.

Q: How does sponsorship work?

A: That just means scotty will pay for the food, drink & venue. As I am not likely to attend all the parties and pay for all the cost in person,

  • If the venue is able to invoice, get them to send the bill to [email protected] and I'll deal with it.
  • Otherwise, someone might have to pay for it first (with a good reward credit card of course), and then forward the receipts to me. Make sure you take clear pictures of all the receipts.

"Around $500 for 20 people" is just a rough guide. Some groups in the past have spent way less (great OzBargainers!) and some have spent more. Don't stress too much about it unless it's something ridiculous.

Q: How can I change my event listed in the table to confirmed?

Once you get enough participants and are sure that event is going to happen (e.g. venue booked), then just message me or comment in this post, and I'll change the confirmation to Yes.

    traffic infringement website

    Well you're not wrong.

  • +5

What is the official process for negging jv's comments at an ozbargain meetup?

    • That could be the theme of the meet-up! :D

      • +6

Submission to scotty: each participant is given 10 green stickers and 5 red stickers for the purpose of rating each other's banter. Simply place a sticker on the speaker's clothing to cast your opinion.

        • +2

I want to be negged to oblivion, then thrown out.

          • +3

@capslock janitor: I'm afraid it won't be that simple because you'll be detained in the penalty box cage.

    • punch in the face

      • Good idea, but did it take you over a month to come up with that?

        • no, but it will take me over a month to properly evaluate whether it's worth making the punch, joining the gym, getting muscle gains and then executing the punch

by then everyone will have gone home and i'll be punching the air

Get those dates confirmed and I'll fly into any city! Floods, storms, flight delays and broken trains didn't stop me from showing up to 2 Sydney meetups last year 😉

  • +11

Party idea, Pictionary… but you have to draw the scene of a traffic infringement and everyone has to guess what one it is. Extra points for guessing what driver was was in the wrong and which one was in the right.

      • Meaning?

        • have a look here

          • @snapper: Thanks. I do know about the badge. I was more surprised by the insinuation that I had more than 1 account. I don't. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

            • @[Deactivated]: You mean you have less than 1 account?

              • -1

@SydneySwan: I mean, there's more than one of me ;)

                • @[Deactivated]: See, when I watched episode 1, I thought you were a little weird, but meh I get it Jar Jar is his own animal, by episode 2 I was perhaps a bit more skeptical, but by episode 3 I just knew something was off. But now! Haha! By your own admission! You are a Sith. I knew it!

@BertieBrown: Either that or he has an SO who uses his ozb account from time to time and he allows it. This is the way of our order ;)

      From the post:

    • +6

Hopefully we'll get more people putting their hands up organising the events. I have dropped the minimum requirement from 20+ people to 15+ people to get sponsorship, but I think last year I have also sponsored ones with around 10 people. Moreover we have spent a lot more than $500 for the Cashrewards & ShopBack parties last year so $500 is certainly not the cap.

Basically free food & drinks for everyone.

Not sure why people aren't swamping these "deals". Too much "work" I guess?

      • +1

Nudge neil to do a Melbourne one 😉

        • +11

Rejected by one venue so far and waiting to hear back from Justin at Poked.

          • +4

@neil: I'd be down for a OzBargain party in Melbourne. Even without coupons $500 would net us 100 dominoes pizzas.

            • @Ipodisclassic: Order Dominos without a coupon? Sacrilege.

Justin from Poked is onboard likely on the 28th. Will just need to confirm more details and I'll post something up.

              • @neil: Hi, sadly can’t make it on the 28th. Cheers, M.

  • +2

Just added another Sydney meetup proposal to the list and now there are 5 coming up. Talked to Neil yesterday and he will be organising one — however anyone else in Melbourne are also welcome to organise one themselves.

    • How do we confirm them? By having the adequate numbers?

      • I guess so. For Perth one, stickyfingers has got the number and booked the venue so it's definitely happening.

        • Great okay. I'll give it another few days and I'll call the venue to book. (It's not a huge venue but it's normally fairly quiet on weekday nights.)

  • +4

Perhaps more people will sign up if this thread is pinned at the top? It's not easy finding this thread.

    • +6

Pinned to front page highlight for this evening 6PM - 10PM. I'll add a front page notice later.

  • We’d be interested in sponsoring one of the Sydney meetups.
Would we be able to get in contact with an organiser?

    • +1

      What would this involve?

      • We give the organiser some money to spend towards catering, better yet (We provide free catering) and In return, we can have our advertising in the venue.

        • You can try sponsoring this CBD meetup

        • I appreciate the offer but Scotty was already hoping to pay for food/drink. What do you guys do? Could you give out other things on the night?

          • @dust: free groceries, entire ozb would turn up

  • +2

Hong Ha Bakery Mascot NSW meetup

Archie Brothers Circue Electriq Alexandria, Sydney meetup

  • +2

Both the Sydney Parramatta meetup (coming Wednesday, 13 Nov) and Sydney Chatswood meetup (Wed 27 Nov) have been confirmed. Also added Sydney Cambelltown on Sat 23 Nov.

    • +5

The organizer of Campbelltown event has been a member for less than 16 hours at time of this comment. The announcement is his/her first post. It just feels a little odd to me. Have you personally spoken to the organizer and verified the veracity of the event?

      • They've just edited to say that there's not enough interest so it's canceled.

        • You mean IF there isn't enough interest, it'll be cancelled.

Alvin raises a very good point though

          • +1

@kerfuffle: Then it isn't a confirmed event, is it now? Scotty needs to clarify the circumstances surrounding this event.

      • +2

I wonder if the organiser is 'associated' with Gloria Jeans Campbelltown.

        • +2

          I assumed that too

          • +1

@kerfuffle: Yup it does look questionable… Especially as they will somehow manage for it to be Ozb exclusive apparently…

      • +7

Thank you for mentioning it. For now, due to a threatening comment, organiser of that event ended up in the penalty box and we have now removed the listing.

  • Oh wow and all the sudden there's so many Ozbargain parties in Sydney!

  • +4

    scotty for president!!!

  • Awesome idea, love it.

  • Wow it's been a year already!

  • +7

Seems like melbourne has been ozbargained out this year

    • +2

:( Still time for you to organise one

    • Feel free to organise one yourself mate. Still time.
