What Have Been The Top 5 Best Genuine Deals Ever Posted on OzBargain?

I’ve been on Ozbargain for many years and been wondering what have been the top 5 genuine deals ever posted on Ozbargain?

When I mean genuine, I’m excluding price errors, deals where you need paid membership, competitions, limited supply freebies and severely limited supply items (e.g. only valid for the first 3 people). I’m just interested in the best pure deal that has ever been posted.

Legitimate price matching or price beating counts as a genuine deal, as well as discounted gift voucher purchases which stacked with other discounts too.

If you could link the bargain too for reference, that would be great!

HP N36L microserver for $159 back in 2011 or 2012.

I still use it as a NAS and as a home theatre PC.

    • +1

Ahh yes, 2011 that was one of mine!
That deal had everything… Price so low the classic "will they honour it calls?".. People missing out because they saved 2% by doing a bank transfer instead of CC… Megabuy muscling in and trying to Broden them all. Those were the days.

I've still got my pair, one a NAS and one a TV tuner server. They've been running 24/7 since then.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/44381

    • Was going to also mention the microserver. I think I saw a guy selling one second hand for about 20 dollars less than the bargain price.

    • This. Still got mine running 24/7 as home seed box and media server. Probably one of the best things I've ever purchased. Plus it really helped push me to switch to Linux.

It wasn't an official deal but Ubereats gave out $500-$700 worth of free food vouchers per person for a limited amount of vouchers this year in May through a Facebook live video. Had to be real quick to enter it as they displayed it. Catch was, it was given on Saturday with expiry on Sunday night so pre-ordered week worth of food.

$10 Officeworks Voucher with no minimum spend from some overseas student publication.

1 year of near free shit from OW, just above $10 per purchase.

  • The Amaysim & Kogan phone deals have caused many a porting flurry $$$$$$ …..cost basicly $4.85 + got back some cash rewards.

Also a tip from OzBargain for grog at BWS got me a dozen stubbies of Tiger for $6 !…….didnt even question it !

Air asia business class tickets for the price of a discounted economy ticket back in 2013, tickets were honored even though it was a pricing error.

    • +1

Loved that deal. Came out to be around $330pp,I had the time of my life.

      • I booked, but the route got cancelled before I flew. They offered mel-kul-dps instead. I HUACA'd 3 times until they gave me just MEL-KUL rt. 2h15m longer flight, $281 bargain of the century.

This deal impresses my fellow points nerds to this day.

        • And how good is air Asia X food?

        • That was an awesome deal. Free lounge access to. It was a shame that we had to go to kul though.

  • +1

I got a pretty good deal for my Note 8 last year considering rrp was over $1500 and HN had it on sale for $978. As it was during the Amex credit $100 for $400 I managed to pick it up for $778 which is still awesome price for local stock if you were to buy it now. Also got TRS which got it below the $700 mark :) safe to say I will be keeping this phone for awhile.

    • I got this exact deal last year also, $778 with 2x Amex, I also got 15000 qantas points also on this, as their was a Qantas/Samsung deal during the sale date at HN!!

That $5 US eBay coupon last month. Used and abused, got multiple free steam gift cards and other goodies.

    • What deal was this?

  • +3

During dick Smith's fire sale I got a cannon 700d for $250 and a display model with no strap or battery for my brother for $150. Cannon were doing a $100 cash back at the time as well so got 2 700ds for $200 all up.

    • I got a shedload of deal from dickies, alas non of the ones I picked up could be posted due to lack of stock. 2 of mine are Panasonic VT55 FHD plasma smart tv for 149, and Nikon 5800 dslr twin lens kit for IIRC 220 with a cash back that was 50 or 100 off? Also Seiko 55" 4k tv for $220

  • +4

Canon 7d Mark II with 18-135 lens for $900 during one of Dick Smith's sale. Also got a $150 cashback from Canon meaning $750 all up!

    • Nice !!!

I only grab the 17-40mm lens for $749 with good guys's $200 gift card promotion. The I pick it up one and half week later which the receipt get me additional $100 cash back from Canon.

    • Yeah there have been a couple of deals for $1000 off 70-200 2.8 stabilized glass, but this one even beats them.

Pity about availability of the 7D Mark II. Every many and their dog went in extra early for a chance at one of those cameras and you had to be very lucky.

$1 kogan mobile 32gb prepaid.. been using them for the last 6 months streaming youtube pretty much all day in bg

    • Aren’t these the ones for new customers only? How does that work?

      • +2

"new customers" meaning you can't use them to recharge an existing number. you just have to keep registering with the new number provided with sim card. just remember to remove credit card details and turn off auto-recharge upon registering each time

        • Thanks for the info!

    • Can you order more than one?
I thought this was for new customer

  • My best bargain would be a colour HP Laserjet MFP that I got for about $130. It was a EOL sale which wasnt posted due to lack of stock. Still using the original toner 3 years on!

  • +6

Free Citibank Signature card. It's given me a point system which isn't too shabby compared to paying cards and I use the lounges every year. The annual fee alone saves me $395 a year (without fighting tooth and nail)

    Amazing…

    • I agree with that. I've got lots of bargains on here but none have lasted as long as this one. At the time I didn't think it was anything special.

    • Yep I got this as well, I think someone posted a family and friends deal for annual fee free for life.

I also got a annual fee free BMW amex gold card, even though I have a Hyundai, its been great for all the amex cashback offers. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/36090

Getting a $200 eftpos gift card for taking a Renault for a spin around the block was the best deal I've got from here.

    • That was incredible!

Subway, free 6 inch sub for getting a free 600 ml coke

    • I think it pre-dates Ozbargain but this was originally a free 6 inch sub with the purchase of ANY drink. Small postmix coke was $1.70. My local store hated me!

    1. This was, by far, the best thing OzBargain ever gave me: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/314390
    2. 11 free burgers (per account) at Grill'd in 2016 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/265889

    4. There were 2 free meals delivered via Delivery Hero a few years ago, can't find the deal now.
    5. I can't decide about the 5th, maybe the $1 Herald Sun subscription with $30 cashrewards. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/319779

The top 2 greatly reduced living expenses for people when exploited properly.
The $100 ING referral links have been nice, though not a deal.

    • Wow you cleaned up good in that Android Pay deal… not sure how I missed out on that one.

      • Yeah, I nearly missed it as well. It's because it was posted as a 'competition' not a deal.
Hopefully you catch the next one :)

    • I think I got delivery hero weekly for about 6 months andd never paid nore than 15 bucks for dinner for 4

PS4 Pro Fortnite bundle deal on Amazon Prime day sale for $379. Sold the Fortnite code for above $200. So the PS4 Pro cost me about $150 after cashback

  • Got The Witcher 3 PS4 game for $1 (RRP 89.95?) from the Dick Smith clearance back in December 2015. Was stoked to find the last copy in the store.

6 free gold class movie vouchers for opening an ME Bank savings account with no fees.

    • +1

I sort of prefer things like this compared with the equivalent cash. If I had the cash, I'd have no excuse to go to the movies.

    • +1

Ah yes, I did enjoy that. Also made me realize how much I would hate paying for gold class. Luckily it was free!

  • Lavazza A Modo Mio coffee machine $25 profit plus 32 free pods after cash back

  • $100 cashback from Amex if we spend 3times in HCF health insurance. seriously, nothing beats that free money.

  • I Liked this one

You get paid to have something :).

  • +1

Free alcohol https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/251027 - buy a 4 pack of Absolut Botanik and get $20 cash back. The cost was less than that, about $18 or something so essentially got them free w change… I was very surprised it didn't get ozbargained quickly!

Google Pixel 2xl telstra.. 20gb for $49 per month using welcome bonus.. 2 year plan.. If you managed to sell the phone at the ebay price then it was almost free or very cheap 24mth telstra plan..

    • Definitely one of the best pulls I got from my ozbargaining.

  • Also eBay gift cards at 10% discount was a great deal.. Error few times but once it ran for a long time

  • +3

$123 simply for opening an ING bank account.

No fees, no minimum deposits, no other stipulations or funny business whatsoever. Just $123 sitting right there in the account, to do with as I wanted.

    2005 I think it was.

  • +1

Cool Harvest - Mistery flight deal - This was AMAZING - you had to buy 12 bottles of Jacobs Creek Wine, and you would fill the form and receive 2 nights on a hotel plus return flights to one australia capital city for you and a companion - Wife loved it! best deal ever, it was not a draw.

    • It was only 6 bottles for a single night, 2 x 6 bottles to get 2 nights with a partner (or living at same address) :) Amazing deal. My flat mate and I ended up at the at the Travelodge in Melbourne - coming from Perth!

  • +1

    $16 scanner/printer from HN

$40 Kenwood Chef attachments that had been $180+

    $18 New Balance sneakers

Can't remember the discount now but it was on the Adidas site and it was a family and friends sale in which I picked up some ridiculously cheap Stella McCartney for Adidas gear.

  • Cheap Qantas flights through Expedia Brazil for me.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/121333

  • +3

the $100 Tiger Airways vouchers for signing up with an email. Stackable too! I think I ended up getting about 20 of them all up. Really helped the family out when we needed to go interstate.

    • +1

Probably agree with this. Infrequent flyers club.

  • +1

Identification of Winning Cadbury Medium Bars for Score a Freebie Bars Promotion was my favourite

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/32316

I got about 25 free chocolates from various places. Man that was a good day.

    • This was the best!

  • Free wine from graysonline :)
Back in 2012, there were several codes from newspapers. I ended up with like 24litres on sangria for couple of dollars.
Another lots of 12 bottles wine for about 50 cents each, and the expensive stuff (about $1.50 bottle, $20 bottles elsewhere RRP)
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87458

Also some of those deals that just keep on giving (if make new account etc) , eg. Hey you coffee, must have gotten approx 200 free coffees , chai, herbal tea, hot choc, etc by now :)
Same with video ezy, must have gotten approx 50 free rentals so far :)

  • That 40inch FHD genetic brand from The Good Guys two years ago for about $160 is great for gaming and still going strong.

Also opening a new account with ING bank back in 2015, they have me a $250 voucher to use at The Iconic… Bought plenty of nice clothes for free and the bonus one percent cash back when using tap and go. Plus saving me atm fees.

    Notice eBay isn't being mentioned…..

  • +2

Don't forget the Waterford London Desktop Bar - although I think everyone has one of these now.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239653

    • I've got 3

  • The $200 Bose qc35 eBay deal was a beauty. Mainly because I was lucky enough to snag a pair!

  • Mine was the Air Asia sale that was Mel to Phuket return for $170. Never gonna get it that cheap again!

    • Mine was a $99 return to Manila on Cebu Pacific. The next one I took was $149, still not bad!

      • What did you end up doing over there.. am trying to get ideas for if I decide to start travelling.. been in Australia all my life and am not really a theme park kind of guy I suppose.

        • Scuba diving.

If you don't dive, there's still plenty of things to do. Just get out of Manila as quick as you can. It's a huge crazy city, without much charm. Head for an island and enjoy. It's cheap, beautiful and the locals are friendly. Just don't head too far south (Mindanao) - it's a bit rough down there at the moment apparently. Palawan is good and very convenient. Cebu or Bohol also good options.

Philippines are great for a first trip because it's largely English speaking and different enough to make it feel like a holiday.

If you want something easy and cheap, South East Asia is great. Singapore is a very western city and easy to get around. Taiwan is good too. Thailand is also beautiful and an easy favourite . Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam may be a little more intense for a first time, so maybe keep them for a second trip.

  • +3

The Pure Blonde "6km for a 6pack". You used Strava to log a 6km run (I just rode my bike around the local park for about 30 mins) and in return you got a generic voucher for a free six pack of beer. Got about a case worth of beer for nothing.

    • Yes I remember that one. I log 1-3 10km runs a week anyway so it was essentially just a free 6-pack of beer for me.

    1. Amex cashback - so much goodness. Momentum, BP, Myer, First Choice Liquor. So much cash back on ordinary spend obtaining gift cards for later use!
    2. Norton Antivirus. I cant remember the specifics, but I think it was Dick Smith sold them for $10, but then a $20 cash back on redemption? That was good times. I remember pocketing a few hundred of free cash from this.
    3. Kogan Mobile - initial plan then to 2-for-1. Impossible to beat for our circumstances.
    4. Use of VPN to buy NFL Gamepass - saves a good sum each year.
  • Back in 2011, obtaining a $799rrp Samsung Galaxy S2 for $2:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/54666

  • The eBay sales a few years ago with the cheap DJI Mavic Pro and Bose QC35s were pretty good!

    • Oh yeah that $800 Mavic Pro was amazeballs. Have crashed the Mavic on a tree since though, lucky its still working :X

  • +1

Macquarie Hilton card fee free for life. Used it to stay a free night in the Tokyo Conrad and a shit load of free breakfasts.

Have overpaid for a crappy Hilton room here and there…

  • +1

My best deal would've been the brand new MacBook Air 11" that I bought from Kogan for $500 several years back.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/150885

  • +2

Lifetime free burger if you change your last name to Burger.

  • +1

When “The Home” (now-defunct online store) had a “refer a friend, get $10” promo a few years back. Best parts were the lack of a minimum spend and each email counted as a separate friend.

Stocked the house with random homewares. It was great.

  • One that stick with me was Jetstar Perth-Melbourne for $49 each way, which I get to also combine with TigerAir Melbourne-GC for $20 each way. Impulsive holiday plan made with me and a few friends! It was also my first visit interstate so I had a sweet memory of it.. and only for $140 total per person

Was also lucky on the way back they put us on Qantas flight instead so we're getting a full serviced flight :)

    • Yeah I was going to go with something similar - the Jetstar Secret Jingle sale. I didn't get it but would have loved to pick MEL-PER from this one ($10 return) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/425833 - I did however get MEL-BNE for $10. I said to someone at the time it was really more a competition than a sale at those prices and I think that's probably true.

  • at one point there was an ebay sitewide 20% off and a 20% off kogan at the same time. couple that with a tax refund for business purposes and you're basically getting the latest model macbook air with a 60% discount. he ended up selling it like 3 years later for a profit!

when he originally told me about the deal, i didn't bite the bullet. i went home to research it first. by the time i got home they were sold out. that sort of double discount code just doesn't happen anymore unfortunately.
