I'm not sure it works properly. I've actually tested this one and have had to contact support, still awaiting the referral.
Seems if you click on the referral link you are taken to the Google Play store to download the app. You then open the app once installed but I can't see how they are matching the referral with the install. Perhaps this only works properly with iOS? Not sure. Problem is that when you contact support, you need to provide the link and a name. By just clicking a random link, you won't know who referred you.
I'll follow up with them to see what's going on but for now best we stick to PM.

I like that solicitation isn’t permitted, so we don’t have intrusive advertising about ith referral system, but I’ve always felt like the system itself needs to advertise ITSELF a bit better. I feel like more people might use it if it didn’t feel so much like “fine print” at the bottom. But eh. Just an opinion. Perhaps it could do with an icon or some bold text and colour, and might benefit from a side by side option of open a referral and next to it, “add your own” dialogue so that people can easily do so directly on a deal without having to discover it on their own via the settings. But I mean other than how hidden it looks to me, it works great.
Maybe we can changed the Edit with the Pencil to Add Your Referral Code or something?

@scotty: After your 1st reply I went on a hunt, looked everywhere and didn't find an alternate. I came to the conclusion that Google must work with long length URLs which embed the query string, like a google search embeds stats from your own browsing activity relating to your search after you begin a search. I think in their wisdom their universal URL shorten-er was made for this and such things. I think the http://goo.gl/XXXXXX is the way to go as this is the link system they promote heavily in their emails and referral programme login, also, it would easy fit the OZBargains referrals list system being neat, short and only requiring the end code. Does OZBargains have another Google referral URL I can investigate for comparison?

Bit of a question for you guys. When competitions are posted, often alot of people joining the competition post there referral code in the comments And it becomes a chain.
Now I've done this a number of times and members have apparently used my referral code. But I never seem to get credited for referring anyone. Is this something the ozbargain site is blocking ?

I've personally entered competitions via similar comment chains and received referral entries without issue. If you've provided the correct link then I would assume it's either an issue with the comp provider not crediting properly or the member after you didn't use your link unintentionally or intentionally.

Hi, PennyTel have a referral program where the referred has to enter the mobile number of the referrer when signing up. They currently have a Christmas special where the reward is doubled ($20 credit for both, normally $10).
This obviously cannot be put into the OzBargain referral system because of privacy concerns, but I was wondering if I could ask for any current PennyTel customers who are comfortable providing their mobile number? The rules also state "soliciting referrals by any means" is not allowed.

You can't unless you've clicked on the OP's link in a popular deal. It's just in the way our system works however it also does protect people from matching up username with real names. See Referrals

Referrals aren't removed after use. Random referrals are served out well..randomly however we de-prioritise inactive members so that people don't just sign up to OzBargain to SPAM all their referrals.

Revolut (site) is taking applications at the moment. They're queued and your position is based on referrals, so there is no benefit to the referred, but the referrer will get bumped up the queue.
Following the link will eventually get you to download the mobile app which will then indicate your position number in the queue and allow you to share a referral link to bump up your position. Given the (fairly) imminent ordering of Tesla Model 3 in Australia, I foresee a lot of demand for referral codes as these will provide 5000 free supercharger miles (or the equivalent in KM) to the referrer and referee. Are Hey You referrals working for anyone? 90 clicks, 0 credits. Has it worked for anyone else? If not, please check and consider removal.
It works however the app doesn't notify you nor shows you how much credit you have. Only when you go to checkout on an order will it start to subtract referral credits.
I now have ~250 clicks and have never got a credit. Used it semi-regularly. Sounds borked.
I actually accumulated quite a few. Tried it recently and seems they've wiped whatever referral credit was there. Not sure if they are tracking the codes from OzBargain, if the credit expires after x amount of time or what. Hard to really know with such an opaque system they have.

As to why it bothers me so much I thought that's obvious. If you were cynical, you'd say just because I'm more likely to get credit if I hit the front page. If you were more optimistic, you'd say because more Ozbargainer's would know about the credit and thus get $20 credit saving. Assuming there's 10% of 300 who are new and would use the referrer that's 30 * $20 or $600 credit the community would save.

ah, good to see that information is already on the site…. However i still think it needs to more prominent, i think the frequency of people still posting referral links is good evidence of this not being common knowledge on the site
That is more of a commenting issue than a referral system issue. For users doing something for the first time, such as commenting, posting or voting we implemented various warnings/popups that users must click agree to. Rather than just something in front of them that they are less likely to read.
For first time commenters they will see this above the comment form:
I have read and agree to adhere to the commenting guidelines
Users can't post until they've checked the checkbox.
@hamza23: I'm not sure I agree with the effectiveness of this, as similar to EULAs and T&Cs, people are used to just checking a checkbox without reading it and I'm sure that is what happens often. But the information is there at least.
It still seems the random button is very unintuitive. On a desktop the "i" link is way over the other end of the screen and doesnt get noticed. And why does it say the word "email" before random. What has emails got to do with it, its a link not an email… It all just seems unintuitive which likely causes confusion for others.
I think even one sentence after the link would make it much clearer: "Click this referral link when signing up to benefit a random member of the ozbargain community" This would take up no extra space as it could be done inline with the link and would make it much clearer what the functionality of the link was without having to click away to another page and sort through a paragraph of text.

The word "email" was only on the Ratesetter referral program, to differentiate between multiple referral programs, by default and in most cases it will say "Referral" as you can see on other stores. I've removed the word "email" from Ratesetter now.

There are 2 different referral programs for Skrill.
The referral codes look like a first and last name truncated with a number. You must do an eligible transfer to get the appropriate referral code. Referral codes that are all numbers are invalid.
The other one is
Numbers only. Alphabetic characters are for the other Skrill referral.

@ssj036: OK, that's been fixed up. Basically the regex which was put in to exclude the number codes from the other program and URLs caught your name + number combo. So it was:

It has recently launched in Sydney (after a few months in Melbourne?) and today they sent me an email with referral code.
When referees sign up using referral code, the referees get $10 off their second trip (because their first trip is already free).

As they are all needed to show for American Express deals, the current view is way to show the referrals without taking up a lot of vertical space showing every card, thus dominating the focus of the deal. It's not an ideal situation but quite hard to cater to. Happy to hear any suggestions to make it easier to use.

clickenergy.com.au/refer/[customer number] works fine. You should also clarify this is different from the account number. I believe customer number is per person/account and account number is per address/service.

Just FYI, I made a change to a bunch of stores from codes/URL's never expiring to 365 days. So likely you would have had a bunch of notifications this morning. We're trying to keep referrals as fresh as possible so the 1 year expiry window should ensure that.
Every time we add a store to the system we check some existing stores to ensure everything is still working. Hopefully all of these things will make the referral system more reliable.

The Pet Circle referral link on ozbargain doesn't work right now.
Pet Circle give you a referral code, but it needs to be manually entered at checkout as a voucher.
When users click on the random ozbargain link, it needs to show them the code to use, rather than redirect them to a 404 bad-page on petcircle.com.au

That's been re-activated. The URL structure is different and most codes in system were quite old. Everyone will receive a notification to update their links 19/11.

Having a look at their Affiliate Program Page this is more of an affiliate program than a refer a friend program as referees get paid out in money vs. say a free month or account credit. At this time, we won't be adding them to the referral system.

I don't quite follow - it benefits the person being referred as well as the referrer - the former receives twice the length of free trial (4 weeks vs 2 weeks), the latter the $5 TeslaFi credit. I only ended up being a subscriber after finding over the course of the one month trial (myself having been referred) that it was useful. I'm not aware of any deals over and above this but obviously don't want to post only this as it would need a referral code to work! :)

I just realised that when you click the referral link on OzBargain (eg. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/api/referral/461), it redirects you to the sign-up form where you need to re-enter the referral code. However, since it redirects, this is no longer in the URL. Can it be made so that OzBargain also shows the referral code? It's the same code as in the referral link.
If I click on it, the code is automatically entered in the 'referral code' field. Do you not see the same?

Your referral code for XXXXXXXX has expired. It was entered on 2019-XX-XX and clicked N times. If the code is still current, please enter it in again.
The value of N is revealed to us, only when the code expires. Is it possible to know how many times my referral for a particular Merchant was clicked, when the code is still active on Ozbargain? I did not find this anywhere. It shows up for few Merchants as to when it was last "shown", but for links that require clicking to be able to take the referral benefit, is there any way we may find out at any point in time that how many times has it been clicked so far?
the 'number of times clicked' value is shown in your Account -> Edit -> Referrals page.
Under each entry it'll show:
"Last Updated: 01/01/2020 Clicks: 123 Last Click: 12/12/2020 - 11:00"
There are referral types where 'clicks' are not tracked, such as those that rely on user PM's.

However, when the one year period expires, the notification mentions how many times it was clicked. I was asking, if we could know how many times it was clicked, while it is active, say, now.

If it is only showing last updated then there haven't been any clicks yet. Once there are clicks it will appear with Clicks - Last Click OR Shown - Last Shown. Have a look at your Ola referrals and you'll see what I mean.

When a store is banned from referral system like Sweatcoin, can this be reviewed and give them a final warning for whatever they did wrong? Are these bans ever reviewed or are they permanent?
Sweatcoin themselves didn't do anything, it was people SPAMing their referrals all over OzBargain. At this point we won't be adding them into the referral system.
