OzBargain 17th Birthday Meetups (2023)

Time flies and the end of year is creeping on us — that means it's the OzBargain birthday meetup time again! OzBargain is turning 17 this November, and like last year (and the years before), we are inviting OzBargainers to organise face to face meetups in various cities across Australia.

If you would like to use this opportunity to meet other ozbargainers over a meal, practise the OzBargain gang sign and have a chance to grab the latest OzBargain T-shirt, you can either (1) organise a meetup event yourself, or (2) join an existing meetup. To organise an event:

  • Post a new thread in Site Discussions with "OzBargain 17th Birthday - <Location> Meetup" in the title. Use the thread to discuss with the community to work out preferred date/time & venue. Please note that the meetup event must be in November 2023.

  • Update the title with date/time and venue when it's confirmed, and I'll add your post into the list of events. A poll will be created to allow users to confirm who will be coming. The updated event system is still in development — not all issues raised last year can be fixed but hopefully it would be easier to use.

Organising events

First of all, budget, and I'm keeping it to strictly $35pp this year, which should cover food, venue and/or activities. OzBargain has been paying for these birthday parties for the last 6-7 years and the cost kept on going up. For the first few years we were sponsoring up to $500 per event, and it went up to $35pp last year. Meals have also "upgraded" from Nandos to Din Tai Fung & buffets, which I felt were out of character for an OzBargain meetup. I know CPI, inflation and all that stuff, so I am still keeping the budget the same as last year's. 60% of events also went over-budget last year, which basically makes having a budget pointless. So for this year we'll only be sponsoring up to $35 x number of users turned up. It would be the organiser's responsibility to collect excess from attendees of the meetup event.

Sometimes a large event might not be ideal if the aim is to mingle and get to know other ozbargainers. A small'ish event with 15 people in an open space would be more manageable. However if someone is up to the challenge of organising a 70 people meetup again this year, I'm not going to stop him/her either.

Try not to duplicate the location. For example if someone has already organised a meetup somewhere in Parramatta, don't organise another one even if it's at a different venue or date.

Update: please have all the events posted up before the end of October.

Some budget examples,

  • BBQ or pizza at public park (with coupons, of course)
  • Everyone orders UberEats / DoorDash / HungryPanda to eat at the beach and send receipts to scotty for reimbursement
  • Cheap eat in a cafe / restaurant

We had Ippudo in Chatswood a few years ago. The food was fine and price was reasonable too. I also went to Shinara BBQ Buffet on Pitt Street Sydney twice this year. $20 lunch time buffet, the quality of the food is so so but the place is not packed and you get 90 minutes to eat & mingle around. I'm sure there are lots of options that you don't have to spend $$$ to eat in a restaurant.

Again, sorry we are not able to sponsor alcoholic drinks in these meetup events.

Add the tag ozbargain17 to your posts.

Attending events

While I would like to open the meetups to all ozbargainers, due to issues in the past,

  • Attend one, or at most two events that you are not organising. If you have already attended one or two meetup events this year, let someone else have a chance, especially as some of the events are capped.
  • Please do not create new accounts just for the meetups. Organiser should be able to set rules to block accounts that are too new.

This post is work in place. I'll keep everyone updated when we move closer to November and event features get implemented.

      • Dang, wish i went to that one. Chicken an abdolute rott. $30 a person and can only eat 6 full wings either too spicy or salty. For 40$ seems like a bargain from the chicken

  • +2

I don't understand. We all don't just eat KFC?

    • +4

      Did someone say KFC?

    • +2

      KFC Nightclub

The Fried Side Club will pop up for just one night on Saturday, 21st October 2023, at a top-secret location in central Sydney. And guess what? The nightclub’s dancefloor will be grooving to the tunes of Aussie producer sensation Luude, with support acts Kinder and Foura. But that’s not all; to keep the partygoers going, the Fried Side Club will be serving up Luude’s Zinger® Sliders all night long, and yes, they’re FREE for everyone at the club.

  • I presume everyones got their entertainment voucher?

  • +6

Hopefully there's a Perth event again this year - last years was much better attended than the year before - unfortunately, I'm too busy to organise myself, otherwise I would

  • -1

    Sounds like a sausage fest…

    • +2

      Costco $2 hot dog + soda letsgo🥳🥳🥳

  • +11

@I Smell Pennies can you organise your event location to be in Turkey? Can bring the budget down to $3.5pp

  • +6

What are these meetups actually like? I can imagine them being filled with the most awkard bunch of people to ever exist.

    • +7

I organised a meet up and it was really fun and not awkward at all! Most of the people I met were sociable and nice. We talked about our best bargains to break the ice and went from there.

      • +3

Some people actually took photos so you can see what the previous events were like. For example The Wololo Wombat took some photos for last year's Queensland meetup.

    • +14

      Mostly asian males.

  • Any events in Sydney CBD? I missed last year one where it was in Butchers Buffet and it came with Soju

    • +1

Me, ISP and a few others were planning on pooling resources together to organise one massive event (up to 100-150pax) but Scotty said no more events in Sydney haha

      • Awwwwwwww

        Sydney is a big city~~

        • +1

Can't believe no one has suggested Belle's Hot Chicken $30 AYCE wings yet. Available all day every day. I had it in Circular Quay and was very satisfied and it more than meets the max $35pp budget, and you have money spare for a drink if you're feeling fancy.

        • maybe if theres enough demand we can suss it out

      • I reckon in Sydney CBD is required, I mean whats a Syd celebration without one in Syd CBD!

Let me know if you need help, cereal, happy to chip in!

        • +2

I agree, happy to pay $15 extra myself to make it $50pp if there's a better package deal out there.

but 150 ppl seems overkill, its meant to be a meetup not a conference LOL

  • Anyone in upper blue mountains?

  • +5

$35 is my food budget for a week.

    • +1

What food are you eating? 2 min noodles?

      • +3

I have access to sale sections warehouse in woolies, :)

        • +1

You're just like me before :P

Now I don't do the shopping but I miss those fun times :)

        • Care to share more info?

  • -1

$35 per person. That's easy if wanna settle for Domino's or other cheap fast food.

BTW no extra credit $$ for jv being present this year??

    • +1

Not sure if you’re saying that’s low, but that’s an incredibly generous amount. Especially in a group setting it can buy a load of food and fun.

      • I am not saying its low, or high amount. I am just saying if someone wants to organize on budget, they probably cannot go wrong with Domino's. Say they spend like $17 on Dominos rest on Location, equipment etc. Can be really really cheap, problem is usually location, disposable things (plates, cups etc.) and cleanup also [in my opinion, although I never been to a OZB event ever]

        • No one even mentioned dominos and now you've created a whole scenario of buying dominos and disposable cutleries and plates lol.

$35 per person. That's easy if wanna settle for Domino's or other cheap fast food.

There are plenty of options without settling for fast food. The ones I attended last year were all within the $35 budget, this included Chinese and Korean restaurant.

  • +9

Someone should host a KFC Meetup lol

    • +2

You have my vote to be that someone :)

    • +1

      changes yours to kfc lol

  • +3

    South East Queensland

Semi on topic and semi off topic, but I’ve been thinking for a while about arranging a relaxed get-together with a few drinks (non-drinkers also welcome to down soft drink with me), at a bar or the like in either the Gold Coast or Brisbane.

It's not connected to the sponsored parties, and each person would buy their own drinks or the like.
I think it’d be great to hang out in a more relaxed atmosphere relaxed environment where we can get to know each other more, share top secret, exclusive deal info, and hopefully build a social circle for periodic gatherings.

Does this sound like something anybody would be interested in? 🍻😊

    • +1

      Yes count me in :)

    • +1

@quop and I was interested (we don't know each other but associated via OzBargain community membership) in doing this but we got slack.

      • Thanks for the tag, likely would've missed this otherwise.

      • Oh yeah I would be interested as well.

    • +1

Yeah I remember we talked about this I think 2 years ago (after the meetup at Big Roddy's FV) but never got anything off the ground. Good on you for reigniting this fire 🙌

      (And yes I'd be in)

  • +3

OzBargain has been paying for these birthday parties for the last 6-7 years.

Never dawned on me that Ozbargain was footing the bill for these meetups.

Props to you Scotty and co. for sponsoring these events.

  • +1

Could we do IKEA meet up, Springvale VIC maybe?

    • +1

Im planning one for the AYCE at garden state cafe in Mulgrave which is fairly close by!

      • Keen!!

      • +1

Sure, works for me. But for me best would be evening or weekends. Other times I am busy bargain hunting 😂

  • I'm offended.

I can't believe so far none of the venues have KFC listed where we can go absolutely bangers on the buy 1 get 1 free Zinger combos for $7.45 and hacks

    Everyone being your burner phones!

    • +2

Feel free to step up and organise one if you are offended :)

    • -1

how to get the hack Please PM me.

  • +1

Anyone keen for an inner west melb meetup? Dumplings in Footscray?

    • +3

ye planning on one in flemington. just confirming deets with the restaurant first

      • +2

        Laksa King??

      • lol

Are you planning on eating at 8 different meetups again this year?

        • are you ever gonna show up? wanna compare deals and see whos better lol

          • +2

            @cerealsmok3r: lol

All of your posting is OzB birthday meetup oriented. You're on here for a free feed or 20, every year.

  • +1

    any discord server moderators here?

    • Yes kitten

  • Update 12 Oct 2023 — I would like to ask the NSW ozbargainers to stop posting new threads for a while — currently there are 12 concurrent NSW meetup threads. Please let ozbargainers in other states to have a chance.

I'm also busy updating the backend event module which will override the polls when deployed sometime next week, and it will provide the organisers the list of participants who voted to come.

    • +1

Why are there so many events in NSW already but none in Victoria? Are there so many more OzBargain users in NSW compared to Vic?

      • a few are being planned atm. just confirming details and reaching out to restaurants.

        • +2

I just added tentative VIC ones so we don't double up.

    • I'd like to organise a NSW BBQ event on the weekend of 17th Nov, as there are no events on that weekend + no events on the Bankstown line. I'll be organising the food and highly likely it will come down to $20 per person at the max as I've organised BBQ events before. Drinks will be contributed by everyone. Just checking if you're OK with another NSW event.

  • +2

Do Butcher's buffet again that was good and the parramatta was good as well

    • +2

Doubt I can, they raised the price just after my special deal with them.

Either way, we now have too many events, and @cerealsmok3r will be organising one massive Sydney event.

  • +8

Btw, i might have mentioned it last year. Thanks @scotty for the orange shopping ozbargain bags we got like 5 years ago at a Meetup.

It's my go to grocery bag, has been all over the world. USA, UAE, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan etc

    • +3

      • +2

  • +3

@scotty I'm assuming no more sponsoring for kids without accounts anymore? Last year there were quite a few newborns, kids, etc.

    • no such thing. feel free to organise events for teh area (:

  • +2

    • +1

    • Thanks for organising!

  • +4

  • Look like I may miss out as all the events pretty much reach the cap and I have just seen this post today :(

    • +1

Hey I remember you, come Penrith :)

      • +1

Thanks so much but it's a bit too far for me.. will see if i can make it when i know when it will be. Thanks again for remembering me :D

        • +1

          What about Parramatta event?

          • @I Smell Pennies: Yes that could be possible pending the date/time and I dont remember if I voted way too late which may be over the limit :D Thanks so much again :)

    • +1

      Come sydney :D

      • Thank so much but I might have to work during that time so unfortunately :(

  • @scotty can't seem to add any tags for new forum posts right now.
    Is this PEBCAK?

The textbox is not editable on my side.

Tired different browsers and inprivate/incognito as well

    • What are you trying to achieve? It should have the Ozbargain17 tag already added.

Maybe try click on the hyperlink in the first point of Scotty's message?

[NSW] OzBargain 17th Birthday - Parramatta Meetup (Tuesday 14 November, 6:30PM @ Commercial Hotel Parramatta)

Please read the post carefully. First 40 people to send me a deposit via beemit will get their spot.

We have on board some generous sponsors who will contribute some prizes and freebies, including:

    1. @scotty (the event itself is sponsored - thanks Scotty)
    2. @Mobileciti
    3. @Wireless1
    • Event added

  • Update 20 Oct — we have now updated the site for the organisers to manage their events & participants.

    • "List of Events" is a auto-generated table at the top of the page listing all the meetup events this year. There's no need for moderators or power users to manually update the content of the post.

    • Waiting list is implemented for each event that has a cap. One can still register for an event even when the cap has been exceeded — that user will just be put on the waitlist. If anyone cancels, the next person on the waitlist will receive a notification that he/she has secured a place in the meetup event.

    • A new way to checkin at the event has been added. Organiser can click on "Print Check-In QR Code" to generate a printout that any registered participant at the event can scan to checkin (recorded as participated). Organiser will receive notification from OzBargain when a user checked in using this method.

Looking at the ozbargain17 tag there are still some posts that have not been converted to "event", i.e. those that have not confirmed their date, time or venue. Currently,

Please reply this comment or PM me once the details have been confirmed.

Next step would be communications. I know some organisers have already PMed users registered to their events (and tripped our private message spam detector due to sending out large number of similar PMs). Is there something that you want us to build to make communication easier? A new comment in the post that will automatically notify all users registered for that event?

It is important to let users know that if they are no longer able to come to the event, they should cancel their registration as soon as they can — which would make the organiser's life easier, and those on the waitlist can get a chance. We'll introduce a new black badge "Ghosting" for those who registered but failed to turn up.

    • +2

      Love the new badge!

    • A new comment in the post that will automatically notify all users registered for that event?

      That's a great idea.

We'll introduce a new black badge "Ghosting" for those who registered but failed to turn up.

Wonder who's getting the first black badge :)

      • A new comment in the post that will automatically notify all users registered for that event?

That has just been added. If you are the organiser of the event and there's a new option "Notify users registered for this event" when you try to post the top-level comment. That will send out a notification to all who have registered for the event, including those on waitlist, but exclude yourself & those who have already subscribed to all or top-level comments.

That should hopefully get the communication going.

        • Wonderful, thanks scotty :)

          Will test it now.

        • awesome thanks scotty!

edit: wait i dont see this button. you mean updating the thread?
