May 2020

We are getting close to the middle of the year! Like last month, the most voted deals are again free games from Epic Store, so I won't be rewarding any deal from the Gaming category. Here are the winners for May 2020:

Site Updates of Interest (Not a full list)

  • Notify a deal poster when the deal is reported as expired / sold out by other users. This will hopefully lessen the reliance of moderators to mark deals expired.
  • Deal posters have 10 minutes to unpublish new deals/competitions that do not have comments yet. See announcement
  • Deal start dates can now only be at most 90 days into the future. See announcement.
  • Update top deals block to say 'active or upcoming' deals.
  • Add warning when classifieds titles include listing type. e.g. No need to put [WANTED] in the title of a classified in the wanted section.
  • Title suggestion to support currency before $ (A$, NZ$, S$ and US$). Apparently we've been writing currency in the wrong format for many years.
  • Free Games Page.
  • OzBargain Twitter account has been locked and we're having difficulty getting it unlocked. In the meantime, use @ozbargainnew.

    wow

$15 off Your Order @ Menulog deal was bang for your buck

  • +3

A mundane comment got the most up-votes. Pfft.

  • To be fair a LOT of Lysander's posted deals could of been combined as they were all related to the $15 epic voucher.
The voucher itself was the deal, posting repeated games that had now reduced prices due to the voucher is hardly a deal imho

  • Apparently we've been writing currency in the wrong format for many years.

And it's been annoying as hell ;)

Side note, JJB should be "DisabledUser…"

    • Did JJB disable his account?

    • And it's been annoying as hell ;)

But if we follow the exchange rate sites it should be 10.99 USD, 10.99 AUD and so forth. One would think their format would be correct?

      • +1

For currency, we're following the style guide for Australian media (ABC, News Corp, Fairfax) & alternately universities. e.g. ABC Style Guide and alternatively universities (Monash, UniMelb).

If a story uses a foreign currency, convert the amount to Australian currency in brackets following the original amount: the man was fined 3,500 rupees ($70) and allowed to walk free. Don’t convert items that are globally measured in US dollars e.g. West Texas Crude oil, Tapis, and spot gold. Our audience will assume you’re talking about Australian currency unless you specify otherwise: $US7.50, 98 US cents, 4 euros, 69 eurocents, 5 British pounds, 52 British pence, 78 Japanese yen, $NZ2, 50 NZ cents.

        From Monash:

Currency symbols sit in front of numbers and indicate what currency we're using. Some are true symbols, while others are simply letters. For example:

        A$13,000 – Australian dollars
        RM6000 – Malaysian ringgit
        R16,000 – South African rand
        US$15,000 – United States dollars
        €5000 – Euros

So either US$9.99 or $US9.99 is fine. Definitely will take some time to get used to.

But if we follow the exchange rate sites it should be 10.99 USD, 10.99 AUD and so forth. One would think their format would be correct?

        Technically correct.

        From Monash:

Currency codes, on the other hand, sit after the number. They are set by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and combine the ISO code for a country or zone (as used in internet domain names) with the currency abbreviation. For example:

        13,000 AUD – AU + D for Australian dollars
        6000 MYR – MY + R for Malaysian ringgit
16,000 ZAR – ZA + R for South African rand
15,000 USD – US + D for United States dollars
        5000 EUR – EU + R for Euros

Previously we've been putting $9.99 USD ($14.99 AUD) which seems to mix of a bunch of styles.

        • +1

That's really interesting info. Who would've thought there were standards and rules to such a thing? So to clarify should I be having my titles as US$ or $US instead of how I currently do it? I noticed hamza edited one of my previous deals to reflect that and wondered at the time.

          • @Clear: From the Power Users Forum, Title Guidelines:

19/06/2020 - Preferred format for prices with currency in title

As of today, the system will now suggest prices in title to follow conventions such as A$, NZ$, US$, i.e.:

            • No space between currency name and dollar symbol
            • No 'D' character like AUD, USD as as the 'D' for dollar is redundant
            • Australian dollar can just be 'A' instead of 'AU', and only necessary if item price is in another currency in the title. Otherwise the usual price of $X.XX will suffice.

We had to pick one way for the system to suggest currency so picked US$

        • So either US$9.99 or $US9.99 is fine. Definitely will take some time to get used to.

It's funny, I've always edited the space out of my deal titles 😛 sure, A$ instead of AU$ will take a bit
